The rumble match itself was as good as I remembered, and had the key element to make the match work - the marathon man (Austin) who eliminates loads of wrestlers to elevate himself. Plenty of big hitters coming in towards the end, Bret, Foley, Vader, Taker as number 30 - and a unique finish for the time which helped keep Austin heel but also sow the seeds of Bret's turn. This was one of my favorite rumbles . . . but after watching this I realize I liked moments in it that made me pop, and the whole thing wasn't as good as some of the later rumbles had become.
It's pretty crazy that the WWF's roster was so thin at this time that they needed to have everyone from the first three matches pull double duty AND include 4 AAA guys AND pull Jerry Lawler off the commentary desk to get up to 30 participants. Meanwhile WCW had a 60-man battle royal two months earlier
There where more wrestlers left out, hover they where mainly jobbers. Like Tracy Smothers and the Dirty White Boy etc. Despite that it is true the roster was thin.
They had Aldo Montoya, Barry Windham, Bradshaw, Bob Holly, Leif Cassidy, Alex Porteau, Salvatore Sincere etc they didn’t need the Lucha Libre wrestlers.
@@edwardellis3038 And the lucha libre wrestlers where there in the hope it would draw the Mexican American audience as they where not really drawing much themselves at the time. Roster was still on the thin side though.
I remember renting this RR on VHS whenever I was in 2nd grade in which I watch this event multiple of times in just two days and then rent it again the next weekend as well as the 98 RR which is my favorite RR event
It would have been great to have HBK and Austin as the main event this early in Austin's rise, but if I recall correctly the plan was to have Bret and Shawn have a rematch... which leads me to wonder what the WWF originally had in store for Austin at mania.
I wondered that too... Bret bitches to this day that Shawn didn't return the favor (even tho in the early 90s HBK put over Bret over and over to help get his first championship reign to a good start) but he was a major factor in the match that changed the industry and he should be proud of it but if things did go as planned where would have Austin been at Mania 13... against Taker??? I think they could of pulled out something similar...

I was 12 years old when I went to this show with my family. So many memories.
The crowd was hot and Stone Cold won a bunch of us over with his Rumble performance. I being a huge Bret Hart fan was angry when he eliminated him!
@@edwardellis3038 I mean if you have to choose between Mil Mascaras and Alex Porteau to be in your Rumble....
One of my favorite PPVs ever
Dustin/Golddust’s fire in the feud and match was great. As a Golddust fan from day 1, I loved this match. It really added a lot to the character.
Goldust more or less revived the roster in 96 lol
I remember renting this RR on VHS whenever I was in 2nd grade in which I watch this event multiple of times in just two days and then rent it again the next weekend as well as the 98 RR which is my favorite RR event
I miss classic WWE/F. . .I don't know what the future holds but The Attitude Era and The Ruthless Aggression Era were the best days in WWE history.
1997 is The offical Dawning of The Attitude Era .. ♡
Montreal Screwjob and Vince McMahon Attitude Era declaration
@@timbartschwolfman The Attitude era didn't start till Austin won the title at Mania 14
@@lutherheggs451 Mmm. I'd have to disagree.. but i see where ur. Coming from
@@timbartschwolfman you're right tim
Can we have a moment of silence, for the work rate of Wrestling Bios...!! Second to none.!!!
So at one point in this Rumble, we have:
Bret Hart
Steve Austin
Undertaker
Kane
Terry Funk
Mick Foley
Vader
Some guy named Dwayne
I rlly wana see wrestling bios face.... its so hard imagining what this stud of a man looks like 😅😅😅 LOVE YOU wrestling bios!!!!!❤️❤️
Crazy how austin was in the beginning phase of getting over huge.
He was on a roll
I wish Brett had stayed. They could've done great work
@@anjetto1 Well you have to blame michaels for that in 97.
Yes I've been waiting you to do an episode on the 1997 royal rumble
Wow, even back in the day... Triple H was putting on long matches that fans can't get into... he's consistent!
He's playing the game, on us.
