Here in South America bushmasters are legendary snakes. They might only bite when they feel threatened but when they do it is VERY serious. In Brazil they represent 2.3% of snakebites (they are quite rare) whilst Bothrops snakes are responsible for 90%. However, bushmaster envenomation's are 3 times more lethal with a fatality rate of 1% (antivenom for most snakes are widely available in the Public Healthcare system, although often hours away from the accident site). Also, the antivenom only prevents systemic problems, local problems leading to amputation are common. In the State of Bahia a 7 year old stepped on one and died in 15 minutes. In 2005 in the State of Mato Grosso a 5 year old was bitten and entered shock in 30 minutes dying in 90 minutes. For all snakes there are 26.000 people bitten per year on average.

Its probably die to quantity of venom. Bushmasters have huge loads. Also, fang size, while often ppl say gaboons have longest fangs, Im not so sure, bushmasters can give them a run no problem Im quite sure bushmaster wlll inject that venom deeper for sure, their fangs are like daggers, gaboons are very curved.
In a straight line, from the root to a tip, bushmasters have longer fangs hands down

Great info. When I first started to date my Brazilian wife I was interested in her country. I had traveled to a lot of country’s as a soldier but never to South America. In a few moments I found that the country of this gorgeous, kind Brazilian woman has the largest snake in the world, also one of the largest spiders and of course the largest rodent in the world. Not really a fan of any, and growing up in Texas I saw more poisonous snakes than not, (not by a large margin though) what luck to fall in love with this amazing woman whose country has the 3 largest critters I dislike the most! But having visited Brazil (and am here now) I love the country more each time and visit. Yesterday was at a Tio’s casa where he makes cachaca and saw so many mango, abacate, acerola, some fruits similar but not the same that I grew up with in the country in Texas, but super dolce. An amazing day! As long as I don’t run across snakes I’m good I did chase after some capybara which was fun. Interesting creatures the capybara…

Especially the talk about growth rates. Makes me want to see what literature there is on Paleosuchus’ osteoderms.
From the perspective of a paleontology nerd, ontogeny is an especially topical subject in the field. Dinosaur growth rates, specifically, seem to be rather similar to both crocodilians and birds and has proven to be difficult to interpret.

You could tell that the Bushmaster was definitely using her brain and in thinking mode, it's a great experience and interaction with her as well as a goal for the other humans around there because she won't want to immediately attack or become defensive when seeing one, due to her positive experience with you and how you handled her! Although she was cautious she was so calm and this is a great representation video of how bushmasters can act, and that they're not these horrible monsters! Very cool video loved learning about all the animals in this!

They are cool snakes. But you always need to keep up your guard. These snakes are heat seeking missile's!! If perturbed, all they need is your heat signature, then a couple of head bobs... and they got you. They are very accurate even when in shed with blued eyes. Also make no mistake...their bite is a kill bite! 92% kill rate bc it takes lots of antivenin, and need it fast!! Where they are found is usually in very remote areas far from any kind of aid. But man they are beautiful and awesome animals.

Awesome video and fortunate luck you had that night.
I was in the Army in Panama in 1971 before Nam. While patrolling alone out of 8th Group down a very narrow road in a M151A1 jeep I passed by a large coiled snake that I at first thought was just a curious pile on the edge of the road. I slowed down to look but when I saw it was a big snake I just kept going. It struck as I passed and I remember seeing part of it off the ground in the rearview mirror. When reporting this I was told by several older soldiers it was probably a Fur de Lance. I was never sure what kind of snake it was, but after seeing your video and it stretched out as you held it I thought maybe it was a Bushmaster. You brought back memories of the fun in the jungles I served in.

The palm you show @7:15 is called a black palm. Or at least that is what we use to call it in the jungle. Those spines, if they hit you good can rapidly start an infection that will turn gangrenous quickly and if you are in a remote location with no rapid medevac you can end up in very bad shape. I would not be stretching the truth to say it can kill you. Ran across some Bushmasters as well and they were the snake I had the most respect for in any central or south American jungle.

That Bushmaster probably hasn't been in contact with that many people. Due to that and being so large, in it's mind, it thinks that humans aren't a problem. That would be my guess. But then again most animals are that way until people do bad things to them. Very memorable experience for Chris for sure. 🐍
