Beautiful footage as always. When you took that drone shot over the big female, it looked like she had legs! The dark triangles of her belly pattern blend so perfectly with the ground, all you see is the back pattern " walking". She was a beautiful specimen, as pretty as any captives I've seen. I know this is not a popular opinion, but I think species like this may be saved in the long run by the pet trade. As their habitat disappears, giving them financial value may keep them from disappearing. If they weren't so lethal I would definitely keep them. Great work again!
Thank you very much! The catterpillar movement is so special, it really sometimes looks like the snake has tiny legs! For now the problem is that the pet trade only takes more and more snakes from the wild and there is no reintroduction. In our opinion it is important to protect the habitat so there are still some wild populations. And if they go extinct, then some snakes from the captivity can be released back.
I was bit on my tallywacker by a large gaboon. It was so painful. The doctor luckily saved my appendage and lucky it cause it to be twice the size as normal n now my wife was going to leave me but now decided to stay. Thanks to the gaboon. My root is much bigger

When I lived in San Diego my favorite exhibit of all was the Gabon viper - not the panda, not the capybara, not the shoebill - the Gabon viper. They are magnificent. I cannot imagine why someone would want to keep one as a pet though.
People want them because they are beautiful and not so difficult to handle. From our point of view, the best thing is to see them in their natural habitat.
Thank you very much for your film about the beautiful Gaboon viper. The markings on a gaboon viper often remind me of the gorgeous mosaics that you see on a handmade Indian carpet. It is really sad that all our fauna and flora is under a massive amount of threat from the relentless human tide of destruction. One of the few positives is you guys trying bring an awareness to the beautiful world of snakes. I often find in areas where snake are numerous, that all other fauna is also common too. Snakes are often the very first animals to decrease from mans clumsy disturbance on the ecosystem.

Gaboon Vipers, Rhino Vipers, and Gabino's are some of absolute favorite snakes they are absolutely BREATHTAKING. Thank you so much for your beautiful work and spectacular quality as per usual. I have a few questions how did you guys find the Gabino? Was it a male or female? Also I've heard two theories that Hybrid species have an entirely different and more potent venom or that there venom is mixture of the parents and the same Which is true? I suppose Venomous snakes always display extensive variation in venom.
Thank you very much!!! One local man was walking from the forest to the village and saw the Gabino! It was too young to check the sex. The venom might have a mixed composition but we are not aware of any study about that.
@@LivingZoology Actually Gaboons and Rhinos, so surely Gabinos as well, can easily be visually sexed even when babies. Males have extremely short tails, and females' tails are even shorter still. You just have to know what you are looking at.
The Gaboon, Rhino, and Gabino are gorgeous creatures. The patterns and colors are fabulous, but that caterpillar walk always makes me smile, I find it an endearing trait. With as much as I dislike the wild-caught pet trade if it ends will they be thought of as meat and still be exploited?

I just watched a Dav Kaufman video on West Africa and due to the almost complete absence of mammals, he expressed concern that if the reptiles stopped being a source of income they may become a source of meat. So many reptiles are at risk of extinction, there doesn't seem to be good answers about how to keep them safe.
I hate snakes but they are absolutely beautiful creatures. I will never pass where they passed 😂 my kids love snakes and they tell everything you can thing of about snakes. Well done guys

in good english , this is the best video i saw about gaboon vipers , but unluck too short, i wish to see an extended version of video, im from france , i saw many keepers who have this species, must admit its a beautiull one the way they move, their patterns. hope a day it will be protected . im not an adventurer but i would like a day to travel with a guide to see them in their local habit . and sincerly ty to not have added sound its so relaxing the sounds of forest, soudns of animals .

Because nobody cares (or just a few people). Most attention and funds are given to the consevation of iconic mammals. Basically there are missing data about what is happening with populations of most snake species.
Does it really work if the young gaboon vipers live their first few months or even year in captivity and then are released into the wild? Are they adapted well enough to the nature and how they can make prey? Perfect video as always. Thanks a lot for your work, you inspire me!

@@nicolalang552 snakes that are born in captivity have a significantly lower chance of surviving in the wild than ones that are born in the wild. Snakes that have been raised in captivity rarely ever survive in the wild for long.

You guys may remember the book from I guess the 1970s or thereabouts by C J P Ionedes which was about all the snakes he caught in East Africa including these beautiful pale blue tinted gaboons that had blue and purple instead of tan and brown and he used to catch them and one day he said a little girl.... Grabbed a giant adult by the tail and dragged it for about a mile or a kilometer to him because everyone knew he paid money for snakes he shipped them off to zoos and stuff and it never tried to bite her it just allowed itself to be dragged like a family dog all the way striking even one time. What a beautiful animal that is and I love your videos always always love them they're just for one thing that ambient background noise you use instead of music is so perfect and the camera work is awesome as well.
We don't know that story, interesting! From our experience, Gaboon vipers are very phlegmatic for a long time. But if they get pissed off, they can strike viciously and even jump! One of the highest venom yields were extracted from Coastal taipan, King cobra or Ashe's spitting cobra.
Okay. this one has got me asking a few questions. The first, do snakes sneeze? I got to wondering about that watching the Gaboon with the ants crawling all over its face. The second, is there any other hybrid species of snake out there other than the Gabino? I am assuming that the Gaboon viper and Rhino Viper are related species for them to be able to produce offspring. Third, if a fang breaks during the ingestion of the prey, does that cause the snake any harm? With these long fangs, they have to break off during a bite or during the ingestion of the prey animal. Fourth, how old were the young Gaboons released back into the wild? Days? Weeks? Lastly, how much would the snake catcher get per snake for capturing the Gaboon and selling it to the pet trade? I cannot imagine anyone would want to have a snake as deadly as a Gaboon Viper as a pet. One last comment, if I ever end up owning a high end muscle car, I want it to be painted in the color scheme of that Gabino viper. That was one gorgeous snake. Thank you for watching and writing a comment! We were a bit worried, if you still watch our channel! No comment in a long time :) We very rarely see a snake doing something what might be called sneezing. It is certainly not a typical behavior. There are different hybrids, it occurs in closely related species. Eastern Diamondback rattlesnakes can hybridize with Timber rattlesnakes. Some boids can hybridize with other species etc. Snakes change their fangs regularly so it is normal that a fang falls down and there is usually another one ready for use. Sometimes you see a snake which has two fangs on one side as the old one still works and the new one is already coming to its position. Those Gaboon viper babies were weeks old, not directly after being born. Well, the pressure on wild populations of Gaboon vipers or Rhinoceros vipers is huge! Many keepers want wild animals for some reason. We visited Snake Day in Houten (big reptile expo in Netherlands) to see how many imported snakes will be there. There we many from Africa and in bad condition. We spoke with keepers and they even told us that they usually buy 10 snakes because they know that 5 will die because of parasites, dehydration during transport, etc. This is a big problem for snakes in Africa. Finding a wild Ball python is so rare nowadays. It is probably the most common snake in captivity in the world and people still want animals from the wild. The snake catcher in Africa gets little money, big money goes to people who actually sell to Europe or the USA. They pay snake catchers to bring them snakes. We visited one community in Uganda 3 times and managed to change snake catchers to snake conservationists. Nowadays all baby Gaboons are released back into the forest and that is despite the fact that they could sell them for a good money (for their standards). It would help their families to survive. With the help of a great community of parents from Zuzana's forest kindergarten (she has full time job in a kindergarten where kids stay whole day in the nature) here in the Czech Republic we pay school fees for 3 kids in the village and we hope to give them a good future (schools are not for free in Africa and many families cannot afford it for their kids). Thanks to us coming there and expressing our excitement about their nature they realized what kind of amazing natural heritage they have. It is great to see new conservationists arising. When you get that strong car, we will be honored if you use our photo as in inspiration for the color scheme! Thank you so much for your support!

Gaboon fangs do not break during normal usage. One might expect them to be fragile, being long and sharp, but they are stronger, more robust than one would think. I raised and kept a pair for 20 years (bred them twice), and collected way over 100 shed fangs. Never saw a broken one, nor even cracked or damaged in any way. I suppose in the wild a snake might bite into stronger bone in larger prey animals than I ever offered, resulting in risk of breakage. But I think it would require an extraordinary circumstance to break a fang. Never observed anything like sneezing.
It's camouflage ability in thise dead leaves, is the reason why it kills many people in the rain forrest. I lies down in ambush for days, then strikes surprisingly. It also has 100% killing rate, for it follows its prey until it's dead, and keeps on biting it if necessary.
Don’t spread misinformation. Gaboon vipers don’t kill many people, they are uncommon and finding one in the forest is very difficult. These snakes are also calm and don’t strike often.

@@LivingZoology indeed let's not forget that they can also strike with lightning despite the fact that they seem slow, their only advantage is that they have a docile temperament !!!
As slow as they seem, I've seen one reference where they were witnessed to move quite swiftly when necessary. They also have super quick striking speed.
They also don’t rear up or display like other snakes, or cobras, before striking. I suppose they could do a defensive posture, but all I’ve seen and read about is how they look half asleep… then BOOM! Strike out of left field.
This example of a gaboon is the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen in the snake kingdom hands down and it makes me want to see how much they cost and how I can get it for my daughter so she can have a great babysitter for her kids when I’m smoking bubba and watching the show with my other gaboon rhino viper in my lap! Lol I have heard that the bite is the most painful way of dying from a snake bite but it is so lay I dint think it will be interested !

I think only the "Puff Adder" can strike faster than the "Gaboon Viper". "Gaboon Viper" does have the largest fangs of any venomous snake,however.

Once again.... Great video. Aside from the Gaboon Viper having the longest fangs... I assume that they also have the largest venom glands!

Actually, there are other snakes which might have larger venom glands. One of the highest venom yields were extracted from Coastal taipan, King cobra or Ashe's spitting cobra.

Okay. this one has got me asking a few questions. The first, do snakes sneeze? I got to wondering about that watching the Gaboon with the ants crawling all over its face. The second, is there any other hybrid species of snake out there other than the Gabino? I am assuming that the Gaboon viper and Rhino Viper are related species for them to be able to produce offspring. Third, if a fang breaks during the ingestion of the prey, does that cause the snake any harm? With these long fangs, they have to break off during a bite or during the ingestion of the prey animal. Fourth, how old were the young Gaboons released back into the wild? Days? Weeks? Lastly, how much would the snake catcher get per snake for capturing the Gaboon and selling it to the pet trade? I cannot imagine anyone would want to have a snake as deadly as a Gaboon Viper as a pet. One last comment, if I ever end up owning a high end muscle car, I want it to be painted in the color scheme of that Gabino viper. That was one gorgeous snake. Thank you for watching and writing a comment! We were a bit worried, if you still watch our channel! No comment in a long time :) We very rarely see a snake doing something what might be called sneezing. It is certainly not a typical behavior. There are different hybrids, it occurs in closely related species. Eastern Diamondback rattlesnakes can hybridize with Timber rattlesnakes. Some boids can hybridize with other species etc. Snakes change their fangs regularly so it is normal that a fang falls down and there is usually another one ready for use. Sometimes you see a snake which has two fangs on one side as the old one still works and the new one is already coming to its position. Those Gaboon viper babies were weeks old, not directly after being born. Well, the pressure on wild populations of Gaboon vipers or Rhinoceros vipers is huge! Many keepers want wild animals for some reason. We visited Snake Day in Houten (big reptile expo in Netherlands) to see how many imported snakes will be there. There we many from Africa and in bad condition. We spoke with keepers and they even told us that they usually buy 10 snakes because they know that 5 will die because of parasites, dehydration during transport, etc. This is a big problem for snakes in Africa. Finding a wild Ball python is so rare nowadays. It is probably the most common snake in captivity in the world and people still want animals from the wild. The snake catcher in Africa gets little money, big money goes to people who actually sell to Europe or the USA. They pay snake catchers to bring them snakes. We visited one community in Uganda 3 times and managed to change snake catchers to snake conservationists. Nowadays all baby Gaboons are released back into the forest and that is despite the fact that they could sell them for a good money (for their standards). It would help their families to survive. With the help of a great community of parents from Zuzana's forest kindergarten (she has full time job in a kindergarten where kids stay whole day in the nature) here in the Czech Republic we pay school fees for 3 kids in the village and we hope to give them a good future (schools are not for free in Africa and many families cannot afford it for their kids). Thanks to us coming there and expressing our excitement about their nature they realized what kind of amazing natural heritage they have. It is great to see new conservationists arising. Thanks for the great content. I still think that the Red-Spitting Cobra has the best coloring of any animal I have ever seen, but that Gambino was a very. very close second. Some of these snakes could be used in TV commercials for everything from cars and shoes to computers and computer games. Their colors are remarkable. Gaboon fangs do not break during normal usage. One might expect them to be fragile, being long and sharp, but they are stronger, more robust than one would think. I raised and kept a pair for 20 years (bred them twice), and collected way over 100 shed fangs. Never saw a broken one, nor even cracked or damaged in any way. I suppose in the wild a snake might bite into stronger bone in larger prey animals than I ever offered, resulting in risk of breakage. But I think it would require an extraordinary circumstance to break a fang. Never observed anything like sneezing.
BTW, my snakes were obtained as captive bred babies.
They are very friendly for venomous snakes so I wouldn't be too scared of meeting one.
Usually they are very calm, but when they get angry, they can strike fast!
Don't be deceived by their slow moving nature. They can strike fast with their 1.5" fangs. One of the most beautiful snakes.

It's camouflage ability in thise dead leaves, is the reason why it kills many people in the rain forrest. I lies down in ambush for days, then strikes surprisingly. It also has 100% killing rate, for it follows its prey until it's dead, and keeps on biting it if necessary.
Don’t spread misinformation. Gaboon vipers don’t kill many people, they are uncommon and finding one in the forest is very difficult. These snakes are also calm and don’t strike often.

People keep them as pets. They are dangerously venomous and should be kept by people with experience.

Probably some combination of venom of the Gaboon viper and the Rhinoceros viper.
As slow as they seem, I've seen one reference where they were witnessed to move quite swiftly when necessary. They also have super quick striking speed.
Yes, they can move quite fast for short distances if they want. They strike super fast!
They also don’t rear up or display like other snakes, or cobras, before striking. I suppose they could do a defensive posture, but all I’ve seen and read about is how they look half asleep… then BOOM! Strike out of left field.

This example of a gaboon is the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen in the snake kingdom hands down and it makes me want to see how much they cost and how I can get it for my daughter so she can have a great babysitter for her kids when I’m smoking bubba and watching the show with my other gaboon rhino viper in my lap! Lol I have heard that the bite is the most painful way of dying from a snake bite but it is so lay I dint think it will be interested !
Yes, Gaboons are beautiful and their bite is no joke. They have the best life in the forest.
