Song Lyrics:
[Verse 1]
Here we stand
Like an Adam and an Eve
Waterfalls
The Garden of Eden
Two fools in love
So beautiful and strong
The birds in the trees
Are smiling upon them
From the age of the dinosaurs
Cars have run on gasoline
Where, where have they gone?
Now, it's nothing but flowers
[Chorus 1]
There was a factory
Now there are mountains and rivers
You got it, you got it
We caught a rattlesnake
Now we got something for dinner
We got it, we got it
There was a shopping mall
Now it's all covered with flowers
You've got it, you've got it
If this is paradise
I wish I had a lawnmower
You've got it, you've got it
[Verse 2]
Years ago
I was an angry young man
And I'd pretend
That I was a billboard
Standing tall
By the side of the road
I fell in love
With a beautiful highway
This used to be real estate
Now it's only fields and trees
Where, where is the town
Now, it's nothing but flowers
[Bridge 1]
The highways and cars
Were sacrificed for agriculture
I thought that we'd start over
But I guess I was wrong
[Chorus]
Once there were parking lots
Now it's a peaceful oasis
You've got it, you've got it
This was a Pizza Hut
Now it's all covered with daisies
You got it, you got it
I miss the honky tonks,
Dairy Queens, and 7-Elevens
You got it, you got it
And as things fell apart
Nobody paid much attention
You got it, you got it
[Chorus]
I dream of cherry pies,
Candy bars, and chocolate chip cookies
You got it, you got it
We used to microwave
Now we just eat nuts and berries
You got it, you got it
This was a discount store,
Now it's turned into a cornfield
You've got it, you've got it
Don't leave me stranded here
I can't get used to this lifestyle

Really like the idea of a billboard falling in love with a beautiful highway.
Somehow that line and the memory of seeing "LA Story" a couple years later always conflates the two into an odd scene. If you've seen LA Story, you'll understand.
@@EricaGamet haven't seen it, but I'll make sure to now. X
I've always loved this song but never really sat down and listened. It's so clever and original. I'd like to see a film adaptation.
@@EricaGamet en.wikipedia.org/wiki/L.A._Story
One of my favourite songs. I want it played at my funeral.
The harmonies are great, especially on the last line.
The story is good.
I think this is the BEST music video I have seen.
Beautiful. Still sends shivers up my spine. "...and as things fell apart, nobody paid much attention."

Amazing
Talking Heads + jangly Johnny Marr guitar + Kirsty McColl = perfect pop song
Majestic, powerful tune...still relevant, still no one paying attention.
"And as things fell apart, nobody paid much attention."
Hello Somebody
julsHz hello back at ya. Greetings from Australia
One of the best talking heads tracks of all, still relevant even more today. the Talking Heads were ahead of their time for sure.
Back in 1988 when this song came out, I thought it was the best piece of dystopian fiction ever set to music. Now it just sounds like a pleasant pipe dream. :(
back then we were also singing "I won't be coming home tonight, my generation will put it right. We're not just making promises that we know we'll never keep." Seems we weren't much better than the generation(s) before us and I (still) can't tell you why this is a land of confusion.
Waiting for the strip malls to be replaced by oases.
Clerks 2 n the garage with my buddy getting lit every weekend good times.
This song was 32 years ahead of its time. Look at abandoned Pizza Huts. They're everywhere!
Now it's covered with daisies...🦋
Now there's more Topper's and other chains that weren't around in '88.
yeah but there's a brand new pizza hut around the corner from here...
Now they are located in strip malls delivery and carry out....you got it-you got it!
Who eats this shxt?
Thanks Talking Heads and David Byrne for such amazing music. 🇧🇷
I know this is all sarcastic and what not but maaan it sounds like heaven to me.
Johnny Marr being a god as always
Ty clerk 2 for introducing this song to me
Makes me think they could well have gone on to do one or two fantastic albums on the 1990s
A tremendous feat of counter-culture imagination - imagining in this way the end of capitalism in 1988 shows David Byrne's genius.
While in my first job in a department store warehouse, every day this came on the radio. I'm there in my mind playing cricket in the aisles on smoko breaks, wondering about the incredible number of unsold products gathering dust on the shelves, and on weekends a glossolalic down at church thinking about Adam and Eve, the evolution of capitalism, the USSR, and the Fall. But the awful thrill of understanding this song's lyrics was incredible!
Genius. Pure greatness.
Anybody else feel like this gets closer to being reality every day, lately?
We need an updated version of this video with todays figures on. I had a look and saw were clearing 200,000 acres of rainforest per day now. That can’t be right, surely?! I’m so sorry earth. I wish I was never born
We all have opinions but “for me” this will always be their masterpiece
I love this, but Lifetime Piling up is my favourite.
You got it, you got it
Nobody does lyrics like David Byrne
Agreed
This is the most amazing song ever.
That guitar at 3:39 gets me i love it man
pure magic.
This is one of my favorite Talking Heads' songs
Talking Heads...un bisturi nella pancia del Rock!!!
Whenever I need a pick-me-up, I play this wonderful song and dance away over and over!😎
Essa música fez parte da minha juventude na década de 80 à banda também!!
That ending is still such a gut punch.
The Naked album is one of their best, wonder why it's so underrated
this has always been awesome
Beautiful
Here we stand :)
What a song/video!
Still brilliant.
Johnny Marr is so god damn good
you got it... you got it...
BEST day yet...your here 🤩 thanks as I want and Wait 😅😅😅😅 Can you Feel it? Gladness fills me up UpUp Up we GO
The current coronavirus debacle we're dealing with now made me think of this song. I don't know why.
That and Bowie's Sweet Thing/Candidate, it is increasingly dystopian on this planet........
societal collapse
Apocalypse vibes...
You got it, you got it
¡¡¡ grande genio! !!! desde que te escuché en los 80 con los talking te admire por ser distinto
Sick Byrne
Johnny 💓
a dream to cry for from 1988
💗 Thanks for this! 👍🏼 👍🏼 💘
If civilization arises from our ashes, no one will recount our efforts as more than a blip in the progress of evolution.
2024. Still no one is paying attention...

😢
Probably the most profound lyric in the song
Did I just see Johnny Marr and Kirsty Maccoll?
"And as things fell apart nobody paid much attention."
At least this song paints a positive view. Eventually all the fossil fuels will run out. I guess we can all look forward to the daisies and hillsides. At least we'll be able to dream about what we had-the chocolate chip cookies and such. We can discuss over our rattlesnake dinner.
I GOT IT! ✌
We get it!
He hasn't aged!!
How does one defuse from Publix, without a tender song.
The struggle is real.
This has been my favourite song for so long. 1988 and what have we done? F%^k all. I just want to think about butterflies and flowers and Ive gotta think about world leaders and interventions.
Just listen to that bassline :)
progress is good. we can't live without technology and conveniences.
Years ago, I was years ago.
genius
Damn, I wish this lineup had toured.

And as things fell apart
Nobody paid much attention
The genius of David Byrne.
❤❤❤❤❤
This is how I would describe Horizon forbidden west. Just like that.
Is that Kirsty MacColl? never noticed her before
Am i the only one who unironically agrees with the tongue in cheek message of this song?
This sounds like a song Vampire Weekend could cover.
I also dream of cherry pies.
Johnny Marr on guitar too
I can't believe this is 480p
This is so reminiscent of West African Highlife.
the subtitles are totally broken as of now

One of David's trippiest songs in a way. Like, is the writer serious? You can't really tell, can you? I mean, no one wants all the junk those stores sell, but maybe he's missing a lot of memories in those stores. Maybe the simple life is causing a lot of issues. It's like we're stuck in this world where we either succumb to junk to get some conveniences (including even just a safe place to hang), or we do the simple life where we have to fend for ourselves on the land or something (subsistence lifestyle), but perhaps run into some issues that path as well, especially when the ones trying to force us into their society don't really let us have any options but their option. Join us or go die somewhere. There's no middle ground. This is what leads me to the same conclusion over and over. Pure capitalism is purely broken. It's a breakage of the human spirit to be so greedy which is what capitalism encourages, and about being #1 rather than working as a team (another major problem in capitalism) - every 'acts like' they are a team player, but few actually are. Okay, smarty pants, so what's the solution? Well, I personally think a semi-subsistence lifestyle would work best. 3 days a week doing "out there" work, and 4 days "at home" (including growing your own food, fishing, hunting wild animals - take down the fences, let the animals roam, stop spraying chemicals in our lakes and let us eat the fish ...)
Being a Talking Heads fan brought me here.
One of the best songs ever. 2019?
Life During Wartime sequel.
Such a positive song. Great
It's more sarcastic than positive; the lyrics make it apparent that while the narrator initially enjoyed his new lifestyle in an Eden-esque paradise, the lack of modern conveniences has gradually left him more and more bored, to his increasing desperation.

Scarily accurate in 2020...
Don't threaten us with a good time.
Look I thought the correct answer is happy face all over the excercise paper.
The Mitchells Vs The Machines brought us here.
Had to see if anyone else picked up on that. Great
Subtlety they used a cheery song at the start of a road trip but the lyrics are about the apocalypse.

I love this. I just hope this isn't prophetic.
With Kirsty McColl.....
Who is the lady at the beginning of the video?
A friend said this kinda sounds like Jimmy Buffett, and honestly...... I kinda see it, just in the guitar.
johnny marr on guitars?

“And as things fell apart, nobody paid much attention.”
Epitaph of the 21st century.
And also an opening quote in Bret Easton Ellis' American Psycho. Why I'm here.
@@MGSVxBreakpoint that too. I found that book super disturbing, but really interesting.
I was JUST telling someone the same thing the other day.
I don't know WTF that's supposed to mean. From where I sit, everyone is obsessed about something, everyone is butt-hurt about something, everyone has an opinion-whether they know about the subject or not. Indifference doesn't seem like a real problem.
Amen 😔
