Atleast here in Florida, I would have hapilly gone with the Ionic5. Hyundai/Kia have a real issue with their Dealer Network having an overall Scammy feel. Tesla is as simple as ordering a new Cell phone, Hyundai Dealers (along with most others) make me feel like I need a long hot shower after a visit.
I wanted the Ioniq but ended up with Y. Hyundai was marking up cars like nobody's business, meanwhile Tesla dropped prices and no haggling. I was focused on having something different, but at the end of the day I prefer the sportier ride of the Y, the charging network, constant OTA updates that improve the car, the incredible performance, quiet cabin, amazing sound system and incredible route planning software. Also the Y's got darker roofs in 2021-ish that cuts 99% of UV radiation, and a new "comfort suspension" was introduced late 2022 that was likely not in the test car. I applaud Hyundai for creating a nice car, but after 1 year of ownership I'm fully in love with our Y.
Anyone who spent a week with each car would 95% of the time decide on the Y. The charging network alone is huge deciding factor . Try going on a long trip without this network access
My experience too.
Ioniq 5 also has sub par sound system
Same here! Went with the Y because buying a Tesla is so easy and straightforward. I don’t regret my decision at all, in fact I’m thinking about replacing my wife’s plug-in Ioniq with a Cybertruck.
no idea how is the MY quieter, its has such poor NVH.
I love the HI5 but it's 10k more than a MYLR.
EASY! It depends on if you new styling, minimalist to the staying with traditional stuff!
Can’t you charge the Hyundai at a Tesla charging station?
I have an ioniq and charging network has never been an issue , plus Tesla now let’s non Tesla charge on their network in some places
Ioniq 5 charging might be compatible with Tesla supercharging stations. If charging is the only reason is Tesla's plus, then it is not enough
Well there are other perks. tesla is cheaper thx to IRA, tesla has heat pump(that’s huge in EV), phone app works with the car seemingly, double wishbone suspension (for me I love it), and charging network is a huge plus.
I have a 23 model y and one of my neighbors has an ionic and we talk about our experiences, believe model y almost a better car in every way.
@@ny1fanta Also the Ioniq 5 might charge faster in terms of money into the battery, but in term of range gained per time - Nope.
Great styling - still BAD design because aerodynamics are HORRIBLE!
At 75mph the Ioniq needs 25% more energy than a Model Y Long Range in the same conditions despite having skinnier tires and less space..
(Bjorn Nyland testing)
@ny1fanta it does not have V2L and the design looks simple and not exciting. The ride is uncomfortable. Many Tesla owners switch to Ioniq
The ionic 5 charges faster than a tesla on Tesla's own network or other superchargers. 10 to 80% in 18 minutes. There's that too.
With hyundai not getting incentive, ioniq 5 cost about $10k more than model Y. Also Model Y standard range gets better range than top of line ioniq 5 limited that cost $55k-$60k in this review
Ever heard of the IRA loophole? You lease first, then buy out.
Plus the charging network for the 5 is not good compared to Teslas
@@tooltalk Tesla doesn't allow you to buy our your lease. "Purchasing your leased Tesla vehicle is not available at this time for vehicles delivered on or after April 15, 2022 "
He is talking about Ioniq 5@@Idiotsincarshere
Hardly an SUV.
Model Y is roomier than pretty much any midsized SUV. It's a bit surprising (and was the deciding factor). Loads of storage space and very roomy seats.
Tesla all the way👏💯🔥
Is this what you called fair comparison? You’re obviously a Hyundai fan. You’re sponsored by them? 😂
SUVs? Lol
NOT ME, THE WINNER OF THIS COMPARISON TEST IS THE 2024 MITSUBISHI OUTLANDER PHEV.
Electric cars suck
Soulless. No, they don’t have soul just because of torque on demand.
AND I WILL BUY A FULLY LOADED 2023 OUTLANDER PHEV ANYWAY!
I'll take the Hyundai Ioniq. The TSLA is so plain and the inside is uncomortable
I know they are everywhere in Cali but here in Mass they are just starting to pop up everywhere. Also, I agree Tesla has become very weird lately and that's thanks to the CEO. Also, the Ioniq 5 is NOT cool looking. Holding out for better EVs down the road.
The problem with Hyundai Ioniq 5 is not the car itself, but the Hyundai dealership.
This ☝🏼
Yup!
in US
The key is the only go there for pickup.
You never need them with an EV.
As much as I hate Teslas look of bland potato, I could live with it for 10k less.
I just picked up a ‘24 Ioniq 5 Limited AWD over the weekend. I don’t road trip much, so home charging (which Hyundai was throwing in, including installation) should be good for me 99% of the time. I got mine a little under MSRP. But, I know the EA free charging could definitely be a challenge when I do need it.
Your profile picture currently contains a Tesla Model 3. Did you decide to replace your Ioniq 5 with a Model 3?
@@Pulseczar1 No, that’s just an AI image I made before I bought my Ioniq 5 when I thought I originally was going to buy a Model 3. I honestly forgot it was still my picture! 🤣 I need to change that.
How come no mention about V2L as a differentiating factor.
Good point. This is something Tesla needs to catch up on. I wouldn't be surprised if they add it to the Juniper version since they have it in the Cybertruck. I guess Tesla didn't want to have it compete with their batteries. One of the reasons I've held off on getting backup batteries, other than cost is I'm planning on eventually getting an I5, which I think will be adequate in an emergency. I keep looking at Tesla due to price mostly, but it has too many deal breaker issues for me. One of them is V2L.
There is one reason why I will not buy a Tesla: Elon. The Hyundai is great. The N Version is crazy.
Tesla's Advantages: Charging Network/Display
Advantages Ioniq 5: Made in Korea/Design/Performance
for me the tesla superchargers are all far enough away from my home and inconvenient enough where it doesn't actually push it over the hyundai. if I can't charge conveniently somewhere and have to rely on charging at home regardless, then the supercharger network isn't a value added proposition.
We've owned several competitor EVs and while our experience may be different than many, Tesla is really coming in strong. The Tesla app is way ahead of anything other EV manufacturers are doing. Being able to drive wherever you like with reliable, quick and easily accessible public DC fast charging coupled with easy home charging makes Tesla vehicles a home run.
Hmm
Ioniq 5 rear end stance and side view stance reminds me of groupb rally car
I looked at a model y and an ioniq5 and ended up buying the ioniq5. Better looking and I hate the “minimalist” of the Tesla. Better warranty, faster charging, and free charging for 2 years with the ioniq5
Hyundai announced that they are also now joining the Tesla network by the end of 2024.😊
The super charger network is no longer an advantage. Most of the time, you want to be charging at home, it's cheaper.
Not is California.. it's pretty much almost the same..
So the Tesla beat the MotorTrend SUV of the year.... why isn't it the SUV of the year?
Any "of the Year" vehicles have to be new or significantly redesigned. Teslas have pretty much been the same for years with a couple facelifts on some models.
Can tell he was really rooting for the Ioniq 5 and doesn't like how ubiquitous (popular) the Model Y has become. The Limited is the only trim species close to a Model Y. Good luck getting one anywhere near the price of a similar Model Y, especially after dealer markups and tax rebates.
Get the Sel trim is way better deal.
@@gamingwitharlen2267the 2024 SEL no longer has pleather interior.
Yes, the 2023 is a better deal overall, you can find one easily.@@dragodavidCE
I am comparison shopping the Ioniq 5, Model Y, and Volvo XC40 Recharge. I think I will be going with the Model Y due to the Supercharger network. That, and the two Hyundai dealers I visited were so poorly run and the salespeople just left a bad impression on me. The XC40's backseat and rear cargo area were a joke, so that went out quickly.
Smart choice!
Fyi...tesla open the suoercharger network all over the world...so you can charge the hyundai on a tesla charger..
I ordered an ioniq5N
Tesla's "minimalist" design just screams "we made this as cheap as we could then called it 'minimalist' to sound trendy." Why does it scream that? Because that's exactly what happened. It's not a master class in design, it's a master class in cost-cutting then hyping it up as something positive.
Buy a model S This is the electric version of an economy suv Deal with it
They didn't design it to be as cheap as possible, they designed it to be as effecient as possible. Same reason why Tesla cars are still beating all OEM's on their electric cars. They are just more effecient.
@bobhope3940 lol, that's j ust marketing. They did it that way to save cost. The interiors of the 3 and Y are the same to cut cost. That ALSO makes manufacturing efficient, but it wasn't to pass the savings on to you. They had the highest margins in the industry until their sales started to dip. Now they're about on par with other auto manufacturers. That means, even with the massive, recent price cuts, they're STILL making around 8% profit per car. Which means, previously, they were using that "efficiency" to make bank.if
@@jpslaym0936 lol, they compare this car (and against) to a BMW M3. Not exactly "economy." I'm not saying it's a BAD thing to cut cost or anything (though, in this case, Tesla used it to make unprecedented margins for a while), but it's what they did. It's not magic, just business. I personally don't like it because the interiors kinda suck, but that's my preference.
@@QMaverick1 no, I'm not asking you. I'm telling you it was designed for this. I was designed to be robust (few failure modes) and lightweight (effecient).
Everyone saying they did this to be aesthetic is really missing the point. Lol
blasphemy! i haven't charged my ioniq 5 in a public charger for over 6 months!
Why is he calling it The Hondai??!!!!😢😢😢
The Ioniq is incredible!
I would walk before giving musk a nickel.
ok
Thanks for letting us know. I hope Elon is ok without your nickel.
i really think people buy tesla because they think it makes then special..kind up like iphone ..but no...better phones and ev outhere and cheaper
I’d like the range and supercharger network of the Tesla with the cool retro styling of the Ioniq 5
"Best-selling car in the world" is a bit of a misnomer because Tesla doesn't break out sales for Model Y vs Model 3. Still, impressive, and the Y is by far the best vehicle Tesla makes.
Hyundai can use Tesla network as well!
It is not able. No adapter available by what dealer states. Maybe in 2025 but no time given.
I test drove both and couldn't belive the Model Ys quality was so poor. Even a brand new one sounded all rattly when you closed the door. I expected more from a 55k car.
Wait, wait, wait, talking about charging infrastructure. Didn't Hyundai join Tesla's NACS?
Yes they did, but Hyundais won't be able to use the Tesla superchargers until late 2024 or early 2025
All I here is aaawwwwoo aaawwwooo aaawwwwooo why Can't speak normally
That’s why I got both. M3P and Ioniq 5
but one doesn't come with Musk baggage
My Y was built by 20,000 employees.
@@jim97405 good for you
Hope they werent the ones on strike. @jim97405
Speaking as a Model 3 owner (and I also dislike the glass roof).... the Y is just too odd for me. Really like the Ionic 5 ...but its too big. An Ionic 4.25 would be about right.
I know looks at subjective but IMO the Ioniq 5 is ugly.
Ioniq 5 is a mid sized and not compact?
Old 1980’s design from a sci fi B movie! 😂
Dude is forgetting the fact you could use voice commands from the steering wheel on the Tesla.
That sounds more annoying than using a touch screen.
Same with hyundai ioniq 5 :)
Everyone on every video seems to forget that.
Too many buttons...
Tesla looks like a bar of soap
Ioniq 5 series N and Kia EV6 are both so much better than Tesla....Tesla design looks clunky and unsexy
Hyundai should sell EVs without dealers.. most people just don't like getting scammed and lied by dealers with obvious and hidden markups. Thats number one reason Tesla makes it so easy to get the car
Complaining about the glass roof is a bit asinine. Having a glass roof is an actual upgrade in most cars. It's a simple $60 fix. I got roof shade that is magnetic. Take on and off in 30 secs.
FYI Hyundai owns Boston Dynamics.
This is MT trying to justify their pick for car of the year. I'm not saying the hyundia isn't good. I would agree with them completely if it was based on stat's. This is based on preferences and false biases. If you like the 8 bit graphic styling and button rich interior, than this is the car you will probably gravitate to. If you like a minimalist yet highly usable interior, better pricing( full tax incentive) and performance, than the model y is your car. Also the charging network is way better with tesla. If I was going to buy an ev other than tesla , I would choose a Kia ev6 gt , Ford mach e or even the hyundia ionic 6.
Again I'm not saying this car is bad. It comes down to what the buyer wants for there money, and that is why the model y is the best selling CAR in the world this year.
LOL. Duracell vs Energizer.
Every time Hyundai or Kia release a new car every journalist makes a comment along the lines of “they are NOW good”. Just an observation.
Two major things go against the Ioniq 5, cargo space and point of sale tax credit.
So a 3-year-old (or 4.5 since its announcement) Tesla Model Y SUV car wins a comparison test (made by Motor Trend), against the reigning SUV of the year (elected by Motor Trend), yet it was never even a contender for an SUV of the year title.
Amazing video, I love every minute of it. I just found my observation interesting.
Ikea furniture is pretty good, but alrighty then
Did someone put dubstep in the background for a joke?
“ABSOLUTELY MAGNIFICENT REVIEW, QUITE INFORMATIVE AND VERY ENTERTAINING 😅
I like your presentation style. Well done.
AND I WILL BUY A FULLY LOADED 2023 OUTLANDER PHEV ANYWAY!
And now price with the discounts and tax credit.
Now I know why I see like three of them every day heading to and from work, Tesla.
electric car vs intelligent car
tesla for US and for rest of the world either is fine
You must be a Telsa hater.
You head won't burn with the glass roof. Did you forget to mention that the roof is tinted. The Hyundai is just garbage. There is nothing Hyundai does better. You never mentioned thr Hyundai range.
Was watching Jonny's reviews for the past decade, time flies
No subscriptions for car features.
Whats with the dubstep
“SUV’s” 🤣
Tesla: No marketing needed.
Tesla has camp mode for sleeping inside. I've used it many nights.
Y has interior overheat protection.
I don’t sit waiting 30-40 minutes for charging. I use the bathroom, wash the windshield and walk.
They didn’t mention the tax credit.
HI5 has all these too (and FASTER DC charging on new 800V architecture), only tax incentive is different (I think, I'm not in NA)
No v2L
Twitter is the biggest marketing what are you smoking
Liar 😂
Side note: I think public charging in this country only sucks depending on what region you live in. I've driven from Ohio to Florida and back in my Mach-E with nary a problem. I've driven to NJ and back, Chicago and back, and it all went smoothly.
In Cali, where you've got the oldest public charging network, I think it's probably hot garbage. The early stations were just plain bad, and you've got the oldest of the old out there. I'm only pointing this out because everyone seems to make this blanket statement of "public charging is bad," but I think it's now more nuanced than that. EVGO and EA both have newer gen stations that are pretty common (at least over here), and their uptime has been quite good in my experience. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Side side note: the interior of every EV in this class is better than the Model Y's. :-) The only place it ever wins is in storage (which is, admittedly, quite impressive).
...there are plenty of YT videos of the same north to south corridor detailing the trip as disasterous outside the Tesla network...this isn't even debateable...even in California, the EV infrastucture is weak for non Tesla compatible vehicles...
@@puzer1 YT videos do not equal quantitative data.
I could make a YT video detailing my several successful trips and it'd be just as valid.
I'm not saying the networks are as good as they need to be (they're not)--all I'm saying is that my theory is that it will vary based on what region you are traveling through.
reasons i chose the MYLR over the Ioniq5 Limited (when i shopped): 1. dealer markup (every dealer wanted at least $1500 on top of the msrp) and the price of the MYLR was actually cheaper than the Ioniq5 Limited's msrp. 2. Cargo capacity is a LOT better in the Y. 3. I actually like the simplicity of the interior and lack of buttons. 4 (related to #3) i love the tech and ability to control features with the excellent Tesla App and the integration with Supercharging on trips.
a side note: the rear doors on the Ioniq5 are HUGE (bad for those with kids old enough to get in and out themselves), no real frunk on the Ioniq5, and battery tech.
AND I WILL BUY A FULLY LOADED 2023 OUTLANDER PHEV ANYWAY!
Why would u pay a mark up when you can get massive dealer and manufacturer discounts on the lower trim...
That's odd. They are begging me to buy and would give $5000 off without any negotiation
@b3arwithm3 I was shopping in fall of 2021; it was a very different time.
I still stand that the model Y is a better car for a lot of reasons over the ioniq 5.
Why is the Model Y better today?@@Sijray21
Is Tesla any better in the reliability and build quality arena than Teslas of the past 10 years? I worked for Tesla in 2018 and heard first hand all of the problems Tesla customers had. In any case, I'll take the EV6.
I own both, a 2023 Model Y Long Range and 2023 Ioniq 5. Yes, the Ioniq 5 is more tuned for comfort, but all in all, the Model Y is the superior car, mainly because I don't have to deal with a Stealership, and secondly, amazing Tesla supercharger network. Also, the glass roof 100 percent blocks the sun, even on 100 degree F days. Not an issue at all
@@backtoitBILLYWhat is considered rich?
Didn’t Tesla open their charging network to all EVs?
@@alexa7877 Not yet. 2024/2025
Ioniq 5 AWD Ltd quieter, better ride by far, more spacious, more modern design.
The winner is… the Rivian R1T 😂 lol wtf Jonny
Ioniq 5 looks like a 1985 VW GTi that has been spending much of its day at the all you can eat smorgasbord bar
Yeah and Tesla y looks like a marshmallow and egg combo
Jonny! Haven’t seen you in forever! Glad you’re back!
There is any car beter than Tesla model Y ❤❤❤❤
No disagreement there! 🤣
Very good review
Model Y does NOT LOOK pretty good compared to the beautiful ioniq 5. Personaly, I find the Tesla cars... ugly !
Winner is : ioniq 5 for most aspects EXCEPT energy efficiency and practicality where model Y dominates.
Finaly, here in Europe, we have a good public charging network other than Tesla.. we're not in the US... and I charge my ioniq 5 on the Tesla network sometimes !
You think physical buttons are better than the car getting better over time? Really? BTW tesla comes in 5 colors not 4. Also charging the hyundai sucks
They both have ota updates and get better over time.
If you charge at home the ioniq 5 is the superior car. If you road trip the model Y is superior. I've charged my ioniq 5 at home since buying and I never noticed the charging network besides the four electrify America's less then 10 minutes from home.
I like the glass roof and I don't miss the buttons. The seats are super comfy and you can do everything with voice in the Tesla. Thanks for the opinion though. I'll stick with Tesla.
Are these guys getting paid off by Hyundai ? Just like the ioniq6 review…they are delusional 😂
Design goes to Ionic 5
But Tesla wins on app and Charging networks
Everyone goes on and on about Tesla’s no buttons, but never talks about how good their voice commands are for most controls.
Video host is superb. Great writing, natural style. I'm still driving my Cadillac ELR, which I love. I will get a fully electric car when they go to solid state batteries. These two cars are not SUV's. But there are a lot of incentives for the car manufacturers to lie about it.
Ionic 6?
The Ionic 5 and 6 both have severe vibration at high speeds starting at 69 mph. The whole car is vibrating even through the seat. Where are the reviews on this?
SUV's?!
Model Y is one of the UGLIEST cars I have ever seen. Glad the reviewer agrees. It is a well-engineered UGLY car and I will NEVER buy an ugly car no matter how well-engineered it is. Musk could have made a beautiful car, but then again, all of his cars are ugly, except the "new" Roadster, which is vaporware & will be unaffordable, if ever produced.
Wow thats a lot of hate...doesn't matter though the Tesla Model Y was the best selling vehicle in the world in Q1 2023. Clearly many people disagree with you
No "hate" at all, just honesty that you dislike. Sure, people hold their noses and buy it. I've seen their comments on Tesla forums. A lot of them admit it's ugly, but still buy it b/c of the engineering.@@vancity2349
MY 2008, 210K MILES FORD FOCUS, 35 MPH, LOOKS LIKE THE TESLA, AND NEVER FAILED ENGINE, TRANNY, ELECTRONICS, FUEL SYSTEM EVER.
@@davidlang9939 Ticking time bomb
@@vancity2349 no, well maintained engineering is not a ticking timebomb.
Still waiting on cheaper EVs and better range. Hybrid owners / buyers have no reason to go EV at this point as hybrids are still cheaper, have double the range, cost about the same to operate, and are much more reliable (see reliability ratings). Tesla range is overrated, and gets significantly worse in bad weather.
This guy's anti-Tesla bias is so strong it's actually comical. The fact that he didn't mention the range differences or the significant price difference is appalling.
Btw, the roof is treated so that you will not burn inside the car (through the roof, at least) no matter how sunny it is or how balding you are.
UR CRAZY!!! BOTH ARE GROSSLY OVERPRICED FOR THE WORKING CLASS. THESE VEHICLES WITH 100K MILES WILL BE EVEN MORE OVERPRICED AS USED CARS FOR THE AVERAGE HOUSEHOLD, ESP WHEN EXPECTED AGE/MILES DETERIORATION NECESSITATES REPAIRS.
One is a computer on wheels - intuitive to drive with technology getting better all the time. The other is just...wheels.
