I have, once again, subscribed. What holds back a lot of people from adopting Android on X86 is the neglect from developers to make Android X86 versions of their apps. Imagine how awesome Retroarch would be with an Android X86 version with cores that don't suffer from the performance penalty of running ARM cores on an X86 machine. This is why tech-heads prefer ARM Chromebooks to the X86 variants. Android ARM apps run better on ARM devices on Chrome OS.
I was wondering when someone else would figure this set up out. I've been building this exact set up, with Prime OS, for roughly a year. I've sold several to friends, family, & coworker for a nice profit. It took plenty of experimentation with different thin clients and Android x86 versions. However, HP thin clients are the most versatile and the best for running Android. Despite a few bugs, Prime OS is the only Android OS that I could find that will work with the HP T520's wifi card.
I know this is an old thread, but. I am trying this out for the first time, with an HP T620. Prime didn't want to work for me. I'm using Bliss 11, with java runtime issues (won't open installed apk's). Could you share with me which Prime OS ver you used/hacks needed? Thank you

I have the same box; I've got ubuntu on it and it's fast. Just wondering if AndroidOS or Ubuntu is faster on that box... I will probably use it as my streaming box as well; but only downside is it doesn't do 4k..

I have no interest in a desktop Android but I have a lot of interest in an Android appliance. Can you install the Wolf Launcher and a Bluetooth remote control? If so then I would definitely want to do this project to replace my fire sticks (which are always out of space and can’t run games)
1:45 took me a few seconds to work out he'd edited it later to hide what apps he was using in "real time with no editing" 😆...also, I did a quick check and the model for $25 doesn't have wifi just FYI
Well, i have to say, that was a well put together tutorial, thanks :-). Decided to grab one of these off ebay and caught one for £30. Now ive had a while to mess around with it, im quite skeptical as to the performance you were getting from yours.. ive had plenty of years worth of tinkering with rasb-pi's, linux arcade setups, pc builds and android builds and this just runs nothing close to how it does in your video. And ideas?. Ive gone through a ton of different tests and its just horrendous at my end. Perfect example: ppsspp - ran wipeout as you did and couldnt even get anything close to playable. Tried my own settings, tried turning everything to minimum and 1x resolution and was barely seeing 10 fps at best. Additionally, youtube was a total nogo. 1080p streams are choppy as hell and could only get anything playable at around 480p to 720p. Couple that with how primeos lags and crashes so much, it makes this box close to unuseable. Would love to hear your input as to how you got it running that smoothly?. All the best and cheers!
Hey Stuart, thanks for your feedback. I do recall changing a setting in the BIOS, i believe its under the the video/gpu section and its called UMA buffer size. I think the default is Auto but I changed mine to 1GB. Everything else was default and in PSPPP, i left everything as default. Can you check your BIOS and let me know what you see for that buffer size?

interesting solution in the end!. changed it from auto to forced and then played around with 256mb / 512mb and 1g buffer sizes and although it did improve things a little bit, it was still a stuttery mess. I discovered that the unit only displays in 30hz instead of 60hz from the look of it (might experiment on other display devices at some point). so when ppsspp runs a game that natively runs at 60fps, it totally throws the emulator off. i chucked the frameskip to 1 and with it running at 30hz and 30fps it seemed to sync up nicely. tried bumping up the graphics options and it did indeed seem to be refresh rate bound as cranking things up a ton kept the framerate at 30. would also explain the stuttery lag in other places (well.. for someone who is used to 60hz ). youtube did still seem to suffer the same as before but ill keep having a go at it. As you say, for a £25 - £30 thin client, its an impressive purchase!. looking forward to see how you get on with linux. i have a few OS alternatives to try so if i come up with something good, ill message you and let you know. :-)
I think you might have looked deeper than me !. I don't recall seeing 30Hz anywhere. I connected mine Displayport to displayport. This link here does show it supports 60Hz - support.hp.com/gb-en/document/c04356040 Anyway, a great unit to tinker with, ,especially with its small form factor. Mine was £30 as it came with a spare hard drive. If you search on ebay for "HP T520" and select the filter for "Sold Listings" that will give you a good indication on how much they typically sell for.

Not yet. There was a beta version of Android TV X86 available for download a couple of years ago. However, it was so full glitches that the developer stopped working on it and now it's practically impossible to find online. There is a forum for it on the XDA website.
That's an interesting box. I purchased a 4k firestick a couple of days ago. Installed Wolfpack launcher using firetv settings and the fire helper along with a wallpaper. Worked great. Then the next morning I opened the 4k firestick and screen was pale green with apps barely visible. Did a factory reset and reinstalled Wolfpack launcher and worked fine. Then later opened 4k firestick and home menu was pale green. Went to firestick 4k home screen. It was pale green with apps barely visible. Tried another factory reset but would not reset. Does that sound like a defected 4k firestick or do you think the Wolfpack launcher with a bright background had an effect on the 4k firestick.

I do have the Wolfpack launcher on both my T95Q android boxes and 2nd generation fire TV box. I will probably not put very many apps on the 4k firestick. Well i went to the local Staples yesterday afternoon and purchased another 4k firestick. Set it up with my favorite apps and worked fine.got up this morning turned the 4k firestick on and what do you know. Yep pale green homescreen with apps barely visible. So I unplugged it and took it back to Staples for a refund. Plugged one of my android boxes in the hdmi port that I had the 4k firestick in and it works perfect. Just wondering what the issue was with the 4k firestick
@@TechDoctorUK I added the otg cable to add mini keyboard and mouse. Do you think using the power adapter on the otg cable could have caused the 4k firestick to have the green screen because of lack of enough power?
so the thinclient doesnt have windows on it or any software. It boots from the usb which you downloaded the software from another computer right? Also i saw that you use some kind of remote?which remote is that?
I know this is late but try going to Prime OS Settings and make sure the check box for the multi window option is unchecked for C.O.D. Also in Prime OS settings make sure to check the box for "Show internet as Wifi to apps." If you still need help message me.

@Count Rakoczy Yes and for many reasons. One reason being that boxes like that never get all the updates required to continue running smooth and safe. Manufactures do that on purpose to keep you buy a new device ever so often. You can have great hardware like the Minix boxes have but if the software isn't up to par you're not going to be happy. What I came up with here gives anyone good hardware and complete control of the software. You can use any X86_64bit builds and have a choice of a multitude of Android X86 builds, Linux, even Windows. Your choice. I recommended Prime OS Standard 0.4.5 X86_64bit as it is a good all around os. Fast, desktop environment, with built in keyboard and mouse mapper for games along with root access of apps and adb out of the box.
Hey Andrew I sell boxes n firesticks but I've always wanted to have my own box to sell. Do u have any recommendations on how I could begin this ? I suppouse I could do that this way by purchasing this device, however I've never installed or built anything. I'd love to learn how to install this operating system on a box, then I could put all the programs I use to put on them for my customers. Is there anyway, or video I could watch that would teach me n show me how to setup a box using the system u recommend ?

Somehow I missed the HP model you were using & I purchased 4 HP t610s with 4GB & 16GB. Loading up PrimeOS Classic went slick as can be. However, trouble began with FileLinked. It installed OK, but executing it brings up a black box momentasrily, then it disappears??? The second trouble is when there's inactivity, the only thing I've found to get the desktop back is a manual power cycling. Rather frustrated... Time for a beer!
What are the exact specs of the Hp t520 you are using? I found one Hp t520 1.2 ghz (8gb SSD 4gb DDR3 Ram . Is this one good? Please let me know and thank you for your time and help. Your videos have helped me a lot

I have the OS installed but for some reason apps keep crashing including the google play app. The OS alone takes up like 14gb out of my 16gb hard drive. I couldnt even download more than 3 apps before the memory got full so i plugged in a flash drive for more storage but its been a bit of a nightmare with how slow this thing is and how frequently apps are crashing. Same exact thin client and same exact OS. I even tried a newer OS but it was even slower so i went back to the OS you are using. Is there something im missing here? Was your hard drive maxed out when you install Prime OS?
i have installed primeos onto the same hardware and been left with less than half a gig free. am i doing something wrong or is the system lying to me ?
I have a problem, I installed it as you showed , but the box is going after a while in sleep mode, and I can get him out the sleep mode. I everytime have to reset the box. What do i wrong ?
Have you been able to run Netflix? It's not available in the Play Store and If I run Chrome and connect to Netflix I can login and select a movie, but the movie will not run. I tried this on a T520 exactly like yours and on an old Acer laptop with no luck.

Hello doc, may i ask, if i chose a external drive for the PrimeOS to be installed on, will all the apps that i downloaded go to that drive as well? Because i dont want to use the internal storage as it is too small, it will be full in no time, hence i prefer using external storage.
Technical it is a shield. It's a android Operating system. Only the hard ware makes the difference. A firestick is no different from a cellphone. Same with any Android TV box. The stronger the hardware, the better it functions. Yes the shield looks different but all Android devices are the same except Roku. Roku is cut down a lot.

It's great for retro gaming too, just add lemuroid and ROMs and you have an all in one streaming console
@@robertmjr7996 try just using Android x86 and use your favorite launcher. That's how I set mine up last month

Just install Prime then search for videos that will show you how to change the UI. Wouldn't be that difficult

Pale green sounds more like a HDMI / hardware issue. You could do a factory reset and leave it as stock to see if that fixes it

Yes but do try the Live CD version first to ensure everything works OK before installing

@Count Rakoczy Yes and for many reasons. One reason being that boxes like that never get all the updates required to continue running smooth and safe. Manufactures do that on purpose to keep you buy a new device ever so often. You can have great hardware like the Minix boxes have but if the software isn't up to par you're not going to be happy. What I came up with here gives anyone good hardware and complete control of the software. You can use any X86_64bit builds and have a choice of a multitude of Android X86 builds, Linux, even Windows. Your choice. I recommended Prime OS Standard 0.4.5 X86_64bit as it is a good all around os. Fast, desktop environment, with built in keyboard and mouse mapper for games along with root access of apps and adb out of the box.

Hey Andrew I sell boxes n firesticks but I've always wanted to have my own box to sell. Do u have any recommendations on how I could begin this ? I suppouse I could do that this way by purchasing this device, however I've never installed or built anything. I'd love to learn how to install this operating system on a box, then I could put all the programs I use to put on them for my customers. Is there anyway, or video I could watch that would teach me n show me how to setup a box using the system u recommend ?

USB WiFi will work but you need to ensure its compatible with PrimeOS
If you purchase one with an internal wifi / Bluetooth card, Prime OS will work.
Can you hook upa bluetooth USB dongle to this computer that will work with prime os?
Somehow I missed the HP model you were using & I purchased 4 HP t610s with 4GB & 16GB. Loading up PrimeOS Classic went slick as can be. However, trouble began with FileLinked. It installed OK, but executing it brings up a black box momentasrily, then it disappears??? The second trouble is when there's inactivity, the only thing I've found to get the desktop back is a manual power cycling. Rather frustrated... Time for a beer!

What are the exact specs of the Hp t520 you are using? I found one Hp t520 1.2 ghz (8gb SSD 4gb DDR3 Ram . Is this one good? Please let me know and thank you for your time and help. Your videos have helped me a lot

I have the OS installed but for some reason apps keep crashing including the google play app. The OS alone takes up like 14gb out of my 16gb hard drive. I couldnt even download more than 3 apps before the memory got full so i plugged in a flash drive for more storage but its been a bit of a nightmare with how slow this thing is and how frequently apps are crashing. Same exact thin client and same exact OS. I even tried a newer OS but it was even slower so i went back to the OS you are using. Is there something im missing here? Was your hard drive maxed out when you install Prime OS?

I have a problem, I installed it as you showed , but the box is going after a while in sleep mode, and I can get him out the sleep mode. I everytime have to reset the box. What do i wrong ?
Have you been able to run Netflix? It's not available in the Play Store and If I run Chrome and connect to Netflix I can login and select a movie, but the movie will not run. I tried this on a T520 exactly like yours and on an old Acer laptop with no luck.

The T520 is not as powerful as a newer Firestick. For that, you will want the T620.

Hello doc, may i ask, if i chose a external drive for the PrimeOS to be installed on, will all the apps that i downloaded go to that drive as well? Because i dont want to use the internal storage as it is too small, it will be full in no time, hence i prefer using external storage.
The apps will default to where PrimeOS is installed. So if you install to external storage then thats where the apps will install to

What would you need and the cost to build your own nvidia shield from scratch. If possible? Great video again.
Technical it is a shield. It's a android Operating system. Only the hard ware makes the difference. A firestick is no different from a cellphone. Same with any Android TV box. The stronger the hardware, the better it functions. Yes the shield looks different but all Android devices are the same except Roku. Roku is cut down a lot.
You will want the purchase an HP T620 with the quad core processor to have comparable results to the Nvidia Shield.

Yes, you can have the ROMS on a usb stick and access them from there.
