My 10 year old daughter made four beautiful wands after watching your tutorial. Thanks for making such a great video that even children can follow. She loved this craft.
Just made my first one with my fourteen year old daughter. Can't wait to make more, and more sweet memories as well! Thank you for this great tutorial.
Thank you so much for taking the time to give feedback. And what a great memory you will share with your daughter! I learned from a woman who brought a wand that was decades old made by her grandmother…and it still had the faint aroma of lavender when she rolled it between her palms. 💜
Oh, yes, so do I! 🙄When you make that first tie around the neck of the stems below the flower heads, simply double the ribbon before you tie the knot. This forms the loop to pull up after you bend the stems, then start weaving.
I needed patience just to watch the video but now I remember how to weave the lavender. We did this about 5 years ago in Vashion island in Washington State and now we have a giant lavender plant in our garden and it’s in full bloom.
Thank you for visiting! That's what I love about growing lavender...it teaches me patience as well. So delighted you will now be able to weave wands from your own plant! 💜
So pretty! My grandmas friend learned me how to make them when i was i think 7 years old and i still love making them in the summer! I bought a ton of different colored ribbons. My favourite one is the creme coloured one. It looks so well with the lavender. I like to make the top very slim for an elegant look but the thicker ones look fantastic too! I always pick the lavender from my grandmas garden but there is quite a lot of bugs and spiders in it so you really gotta look at every single one to make sure there is none😅. Really love the tutorial. I love seeing how others make them in their own way!💜
Thank you Renee! What's amazing is that after years of sitting around in closets and drawers, all you have to do is press and roll the wand between your palms and it refreshes the fragrance!
I used to make these years ago when I had several wonderful lavender plants. I moved and its hard to grow here but it makes me want to try my hand at growing some again!
@@LABYRINTHHILL You can grow lavender as a house plant too can't you? I have heard that it is good to have a lavender plant in your bedroom if you have trouble sleeping but have not found any plants.
@@yannettemiller There are some compact varieties which do well in pots, and therefore possible to grow indoors. A better idea for year-round lavender fragrance in the bedroom is to purchase lavender hydrosol and give a quick spray to the pillow before sleeping. Another is to tuck a lavender sachet on your pillow before making the bed. When you turn in at night there will be a lovely fragrance.💜
Best video! Thank you, I was gifted a ton of lavender this week and am busy using it in projects. One day I hope my weaves will be as tidy as your Susan. Thank you again! xoxoJen
Jen! How did I miss this?! Thank you for visiting. 🙏 Our lavender is finally showing signs of fresh stems after this horrible cold/rainy spring...as you know, being just north of me in Victoria BC! 🤗 Susan
Thank you Susan, this is an excellent teaching demo. I am now on my 11th, slowly trying to get as neat as yours. Been in my bits box but it needs the narrower ribbon. I found it easier to sit outside on the bench, as the bits were all over my carpet. Plus it was so relaxing enjoying a cuppa, working with the lavender and the bees buzzing as they come to watch 🤗
I think I was asleep...I can't believe I missed this! Thank you for visiting. 🙏 By the way, if it's too hot/rainy/windy to do it outdoors...letting the bits drop then vacuuming them up add natural air freshener to the room and aromatherapy bonus! 🤣💜
Beautiful, I love crafts that involve herbs and essential oils that help us. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and talents with us. It's so important for people to use these kind of things.
This is my favorite time of year when my lavender is in bloom. I find that I leave my cleaned lavender stems to rest 1 - 2 hours before bending they are more flexiable no breakage and no knead to score the stems. Have fun!
Susan letting them sit out for an hour or 2, 2 is better really is beneficial I have made 75 of them this season and haven’t even made a dent in my lavender. I’m going to harvest the rest It in a week or so and just dry it. Have fun!
Hey, Katie! Thanks for visiting and your kind feedback. Depending on where you live, this time of year there won’t be any fresh lavender for wands. Here in the Pacific Northwest, the earliest we see lavender is late May/early June. Those varieties will be Lavandula angustifolia (aka English lavender) and sometimes their stems aren’t long enough for wand weaving. I have to wait until July for other varieties with longer stems to bloom. 💜
When you do make them, please share photos with me! Thank you for visiting and if you have any questions about growing lavender be sure to let me know. 💜
From one Susan to another...bless your heart for taking the time to give such encouraging feedback! 💜 If you think of another lavender growing or using topic that could use a simple video, please let me know. I have a new Garden Shed Studio that's about to open for filming and creating!

Thank you for visiting, Mireille! The woman who taught me had a lavender wand that was made decades before by her grandmother. She gently rolled the wand between her palms to "refresh" the scent and we were able to smell the lavender! 💜
Beautiful❣ Thank you for sharing your experiences with lavender. I have 24 English Lavender plants ordered, just waiting for them to ship. I'm going to plant them in raised beds. Any tips for growing in raised beds is welcomed. I plan on using in cold process soaps and more crafts. Thank you again.
Thank you! Raised beds are ideal especially if your native soil does not drain well. Lavender hates wet feet. Best tip is to water deeply but less often, allowing the plantings to dry out in between. You might enjoy our free mini class answering the top 10 questions I've been asked about growing lavender: bit.ly/top-ten-FAQs And a final comment on using lavender buds in soap: when combined with the lye and cold process soap making, the buds turn an ugly brown even if sprinkled on the top. I much prefer to use the essential oil only and save the buds for fragrant sachets to accompany the bars of soap. 💜
Raised beds are ideal for the drought-loving lavender since they provide good drainage. It's best to water thoroughly then let the bed completely dry out. Lavender never likes wet feet. As a soap maker myself I've found it's best not to use the lavender buds in or on the soap since it tends to go brown during the curing process. 💜
Growing lavender from seed is difficult. You've done well to have it germinate! Look at my video on pruning lavender: ruclips.net/video/4yQoOTIOqU4/видео.html I believe it has a close-up of a young plant in a pot.
Thank you for visiting. 💜 I have a wand that is more than 5 years old and it still has a fragrance. All you need to do is roll it between the palms of your hands to refresh the essential oil that is in the buds. I place mine in a lingerie drawer and between folded pillow cases in the closet.
@@elizarock655 unfortunately the stems are usually quite brittle at the end of the season so they will break when you bend them. Remove the dried buds and place them in a sachet bag along with a note on your calendar to harvest your stems when about 25% of the blossoms are open. Hope this helps. 💜
Add a little extra length to the ribbon so you can double it at the beginning and tie the knot below the flower heads. Then pull the loop made, through before you begin weaving. If that doesn't help, I will make a quick video in a couple of weeks to demonstrate my loop technique.
Oh, Jen, I'm so sorry! 😩 How fresh were your stems? Sometimes it helps to heavily water the plants-at the base, not overhead-the night before you harvest. This helps the stems be more pliable. This late in the season I notice the stems on my plants are far more brittle even when fresh. 💜
