Hey, Katie! Thanks for visiting and your kind feedback. Depending on where you live, this time of year there won’t be any fresh lavender for wands. Here in the Pacific Northwest, the earliest we see lavender is late May/early June. Those varieties will be Lavandula angustifolia (aka English lavender) and sometimes their stems aren’t long enough for wand weaving. I have to wait until July for other varieties with longer stems to bloom. 💜

Oh, yes, so do I! 🙄When you make that first tie around the neck of the stems below the flower heads, simply double the ribbon before you tie the knot. This forms the loop to pull up after you bend the stems, then start weaving.

Dear Portia, thank you for visiting! There are many recipes that do not use lard for making soap. I would recommend you go to your public library and look for a Soapmaking for Beginners book like The Natural Soapmaking Book for Beginners by Kelly Cable. Thank you for visiting. 💜 I have a wand that is more than 5 years old and it still has a fragrance. All you need to do is roll it between the palms of your hands to refresh the essential oil that is in the buds. I place mine in a lingerie drawer and between folded pillow cases in the closet.

Susan letting them sit out for an hour or 2, 2 is better really is beneficial I have made 75 of them this season and haven’t even made a dent in my lavender. I’m going to harvest the rest It in a week or so and just dry it. Have fun!

Thank you for visiting! A wonderful mystery, likely caused by the fact that the lye necessary for turning the fats into soap, is very alkaline. Once the saponification occurs, the resulting soap is neutral and we have wonderful suds! 🧼🛁

Yes, that is why I make it easy on myself by enclosing the buds in a press'n seal tea bag. 💜

Since I treasure the buds for sachets and other projects where you can see the buds, I will often chop stems and leaves and send them through a spice/coffee grinder then mix with baking soda for a quick, and inexpensive carpet freshener to shake on floor just before vacuuming. Hope that gives you some ideas! 💜

Yes! Every year we prune the plants so that there is only 1-2 inches of the green foliage showing. We shape the plants in the mounds that they naturally grow. Your distillation project sounds delightful. We don't have enough plants to provide for essential oil distillation.
