@@felonysounds those newer rangers (09+) you're referring to are Mazda 2.3 dual overhead cam... You REALLY should adapt a 1/4" fuel return line back to the fuel tank OR put a 1:1 gain fuel pressure regulator in the tank (which you would have to hook up to a boost/vacuum source from the engine). Lack of return of fuel builds it up in the carb and makes the engine run super rich and makes it overheat and vapor lock as you've experienced. Keep up the awesome work guy~ B-)
The Fox body came out when I was in HS and every red blooded American boy wanted one. My friend got a Mustang GT and we immediately went out hunting IROCs. This car brings back a lot of memories. Very, very cool project.
When I was young, fresh out of highschool, I got a job at the local mall Montgomery Ward store in the automotive section as a tire buster as an introduction to eventually becoming a certified mechanic. ( I almost got fired for making a joke calling us "Mr Monkey Wrench" as People called the store "Monkey Wards" and GM had their "Mr Goodwrench thing going on. Someone snitched to management) It was in a Detroit Suburb where cars are in constant contact with road salt and melted snow. Fords use the hub instead of lugnuts to center the wheel so it's a tight clearance which leads to the situation you had there with the wheels stuck on. Aluminum wheels on steel hubs and salt make the situation much worse. What works better than beating a mallet on the rim is to take a 4' 2"pipe with thick walls or a long heavy steel bar and beat the tire (must be inflated), not the rim with the pipe or bar. Swing it hard like you're going for a home run with a baseball bat. This sends a vibrating impact to the rim that knocks it loose, usually 1 or 2 whacks set the wheel and tire flying. If it's stubborn, rotate the wheel 40-60 degrees between whacks. also over inflate 10-20 pounds also helps.
Love to see it!! I had a couple of T-Bird Turbos back in the day and they were great cars. Felt heavy from a dead stop but pulled hard once you were doing 50+ on the highway. Back then, people on the forums talked about the carbed turbo engine like they were full blown AIDS and it was considered mandatory to replace them with any 5.0 you could get your hands on. I can see why from these videos - clearly a very temperamental engine. But it's cool nonetheless, and worth chipping away at IMO. These things are so rare now, especially in a Capri (and a Capri RS at that). I've never seen one IRL and don't think I've ever even seen a video of one moving under its own power.
@doctorzaius4084 They really were fun cars-IF you could keep them running. I remember them being in our service dept CONSTANTLY (dad owns a Ford Dealership). Most original owners were trading them within the first 12 months because of the issues. It got ALOT better when they introduced them with fuel injection into the Mustang Svo’s/Turbo Coupes but even then were extremely finicky. While I love turbo’s(own multiple Ecoboost’s & a WRX) I think my favorite BY far is my 95 T-Bird Super Coupe. Growning up in the Foxbody era(& being a hardcore Mustang Guy) I enjoyed the High School days just blowing the doors off the Camaro’s, Firebirds & Mustangs-all in luxury🤣🤷🏻♂️💯. DEF brings back good memories.
So glad to see the Capri out on the road. I really miss my Mom 1981 Capri (Black Magic) just saw on RUclips a car sales person sold a 1981 for 18k. If you ever put a tape in the cassette player to eject the tape you press the volume button or turn the radio to off or turn the car off and the tape will pop out.
I have been rolling my 1979 Capri RS Turbo since 1985 . And I still have the 2.3 and I am fixing to put it back in it it currently sports a 351w but like I said going back to 2.3 ! Also for your stereo Retro stereo has modern stock replacement stereo's mine looks like a stock radio but it's 350w with Bluetooth and Siri .
@@neilchirico They can take 400 hp. Built tall decks close to 8-9, but much harder to get hold of these days. Not even sure there is a tall deck out there to be had at all now.
Those little AiResearch T3 .48 AR turbos are fairly good little units. They last forever with regular oil changes and they can move some air. I would add a manual boost controller and put a larger main jet in the carb. I would turn the boost up to around 10 psi and see if it makes a difference. Edit: Just to clear things up, some of the 2.3s used AiResearch turbos (which I believe were a model of Garrett turbo), and some used actual Garrett turbos. My best friend and I both turbocharged our Honda Civics and while I used a real Mitsubishi EvoIII 16g turbo that was clipped and ported, he used an AiResearch .48 AR T3 off of a Turbocoupe on his 1.5 VTEC single cam. My car would hit boost HARD and pull all the way to 9,000 RPM on stock valvetrain while his would hit full boost earlier and die off around 6,000 RPM. We messed around on the highway a few times and he would outrun me on acceleration, but I would catch him in the long run. I later changed the 1.5 single cam to a 1.8L DOHC non-VTEC engine and added BC Turbo cams and an upgraded valvetrain with a bigger Turbonetics 50 trim turbo and with a .63 AR housing and that car took on a whole new life. THEN I had the block fully built with sleeves and forged internals and I swapped on a Civic Type-R head with ALL aftermarket parts and a Garrett GTS3582 dual ball bearing turbo that made 709 whp at 34-36 psi.
@DylanMcCoolVideo You might want to address the return line issue. I think if your running the return line properly then you wont be having this issue with the fuel cooking. The fuel having a way to return to the tank will help keep the fuel pressure higher and will help keep the fuel lines cooler due to the constant fuel being renewed through the lines. Plus the hot fuel would be pulling the got fuel away from the carb keeping the carbonator much cooler as well.
Hey Dylan! Buddy of in high school mine had a 79 RS with a 200ci inline 6 backed by a 5 speed. Guess that was the non turbo option. Fun car for what it was.
I had a '79 Capri Turbo RS back in the early 80's. Like you said, not super powerful at 140hp, but still fun to drive. It's one of those cars that I wish that I'd kept from all those years ago. Mine was Red w/black interior. Loved that car and still do! One of the best designs ever! But NOTHING beats the original look of those TRX wheels! Anything else just doesn't look correct. Someone makes a 16" wheels that is the exact duplicate in design but that takes a normal tire and not the original metric. Coker Tire still sells the metric tires though. Love the restoration so far. Don't butcher it. Restore it to stock as there are so few left in stock condition.
The Ford “Webber” carbs are a non symmetrical two barrel. Look closely. The primary is slightly smaller than the secondary. NA 2.3 Fords were around 88hp if I remember correctly.
Dylan: "The turbo is spooling up but we're not going anywhere". Previous owners of these cars:" Yep. sounds about right". I had one in a '79 indy pace car. It was fun to drive for the 2 seconds in each gear under boost . The rest of the time it was basically a pinto. still love the looks of these cars though.
Eh.. Maybe the older carb'd ones might be slow, but later EFI turbo 2.3's will absolutely eat v8's for lunch, if you throw some beefier parts at it (bigger turbo, exhaust manifold, gutted/ported intake, FM intercooler, PimpX ECU, etc) and tune it properly. You can reliably make about 300+ hp, if you know what you're doing. ;-)
Excellent Video Dylan :) , Bryer that 1983 Mercury Capri Turbo 2.3 litre motor 4 speed Manual transmission should nickname it Blackie 2.3 L ! Yes get fix uo and drive lots !

Those engine blocks are also used in 4 cylinder Rangers. 1998 to 2000 had a stroked 2.5, with better head and intake, 8 spark plug distributor-less ignition and roller hydraulic lifters. If you want to go with a twin cam, 16 valve head,, you can go with a Volvo B234F head swap, but it's more involved. But those Turbo Coupe and SVO guys get great power with this swap!
I have seen these engines hold 24PSi, and i personally have run my 2.3t bird at 18. It's surprising to see how much boost these old engines can hold in stock form.
I went to Sewanee in the 70’s. I was so excited when you said you were going up there and then bummed when you didn’t make it. I live in Minnesota now so I don’t get up there anymore. So I vote for a return visit so I can ride along!

I’m loving the Capri! This reminds me of an ‘89 LX notchback my buddy had with a built 2.3 turbo motor but he kept it plain Jane looking and whooped my ‘89 GTA 5.7. Total sleeper and I had to respect it!
Love that little car! Id definatley do alot more to that car. It deserves atleast a restoration. Carpet, seats, dash, engine rebuild with stronger internals, better turbo! Paint and body. Just a neat little car and i doubt too many on the road
These turbo 2.3's already come with forged internals, so they're pretty bulletproof as-is.. If you don't run em lean. Anyway, yeah a car that rare definitely deserves a lot more.. I'd restore it. 😎
Hey Dylan if you do some research on that car you might find that the hood scoop on some models was left open. I mean even if it wasn't I would put a screen on that scoop so that air could get in their. I remember that car from back in the day. I always wanted one. My friends owned them back then. Great build Dylan, great job by you and Briar. Take care and may God bless you two
Your right it's a progressive 2 barrel they were fun to drive. I had an 86 ranger 2.3with the same carb the block was decked 10 thousands and bored 30 over .it was a little sleeper
Dylan, the first dealer I worked for in 1983 had a 1979 Ford Mustang with the 2.3L turbo engine. The car had 30,000 miles on it and knocked like crazy. It was the most gorgeous Mustang you could ever see but the knock was very pronounced. The design was just bad from day 1. Use a listening device to see where the knock is coming from and I bet it is bottom end.
I had a 1980 almost identical to this one. RS Turbo 4 spd, rear wing, black and tan. Actually quite attractive back in the day considering we just came out of the ugly decade. On long trips, the exhaust manifolds would glow red (too rich), the turbo seals and head gaskets are a known weak spot since these turbos are not well cooled. The later SVO was engineered much better than these, but also cost much more.
Awesome car Dylan!!! This car deserves a rebuild on the engine. Maybe a hog leg cam for a 4cyl? You have quite the daily driver with this Mercury. Thank you for the Content! God Bless y’all!!
if you want turbo noise get a 7.3 powerstroke and put a wicked wheel 1 or 2 on it. you can put out ear drums and with a few upgrades it can be pretty sporty too! Cool car tho, glad to see it again.
Hi man, awesome car! I'm also restoring a 79 2.3 turbo, but the mustang ! Can i ask how did you install the boost gauge? i never did that i have no clue how to do it 😭😭
My first car was a 1980 Capri with a 2.3/4 speed. delivered so many pizzas, made a ton of money. had a 79 Capri 5.0 - that brake line was 79 only I believe as is the door handles down on the bottom of the doors. as for a build? find a ranger 2.5 combo, good turbo, megasquirt and a T-5. suspension wise? later k member, SN-95 brakes, coil overs up front, panhard bar & torque arm out back! it will make you a true believer!!!!
Put a cool can on it. You put dry ice in the can. It goes around the coils and keeps the gas cold. I used it on My street car dodge dart three sixty.. Used In the high 1980s on my Street car It ran 13:00 Seconds In the quarter with a cool can.👍🙏😊 Kept the gas real cool..
The Turbo sounds really cool and it makes it feel like you’re going fast until we look out your window and the scene is going nowhere 😂😂😂 Cool revival anyway Dylan!! 👍💪👊😎
You may be able to sell the wheels and tires for enough cash to put some modern easier-to-find stuff on the car. Those high tech deals looked great but are very costly to put new tires on.
Hi, Dylan. Love your videos. I'm working on a tribute truck to my father. It's a 75 d 100 spirit of 76 clone. Let me know if you wanna sell the white grill off that black truck. It's the last piece I need before body work. Mine has an aftermarket tube grill
Buddy had one, same year I believe. Very odd and cool. Do not get rid of it. Now get a thunderbird turbo coupe and super coup. Same vintage. Maybe a taurus sho too. Their svo shop was really hustlin back then.
LMR sells some nice wheels packages for fox bodies. I went with 17x9 front and 17x10 rears. Couple of mods you have to make but the website tells you what you need and sells everything
These engines have a huge following and there's lots of cool aftermarket stuff and some cool generation swap things you can do. They're awesome little engines and heaps of fun. Plus, for some reason, even though they're a 4 cylinder they can actually sound pretty nasty. I have flownaster 10 on my 85 Ranger and it is constantly mistaken for a v8 swap.
Probably needa change rocker arms since that one was off its most likely bent in center rocker arms will cause a tap to when there to lose when they come off they can break a valve
I bigger spacer on the carb to the intake manifold and a turbo heat shield would probably help. Like you said the fuel return line could make a difference.
I know that section of road real well. Back when I was a kid, more than twenty years before Dylan was a twinkle, I was in the back of my dad's van as my family headed to my Aunt's house outside Winchester. We came around one of those curves, and the road was gone. It had slid down the mountain. My dad was able to swerve into the oncoming lane and back on the other side of the slide just before traffic came around the curve.
Did the turbo light light up on the dash every time the turbo kicked in? My father had that exact car when I was young. Same color and all... such a cool car
I have found an easy way to get stuck wheels loose is to put on the lug nuts, then back off two turns. Then move the car back and forth, maybe drive around making hard turns left and right. This almost always gets those stuck wheels loose. Plenty of anti seize on the hubs will help prevent them getting stuck.
If you watch the video I mention that. This is an archaic style return on the factory system, so I really doubt it would do much. Especially being a dead head. Really would help to be a full return style with a regulator and electric pump.
Mention someone was saying sounded like rod knock. I’m not saying that but it does sound like the rods are loose on clearance. I would recommend running Rotella 15w40 to see if it will quiet down the slight rattling the rods have. Can’t hurt to try.
Tap, tap tap, times 150 ahhh there we go😂. My lightbulb in the bathroom needs changed but ima do an 1/8 of a rotation everyday until it comes out lmfao.
I got the sister car. a 1979 Cobra. Mines a factory 5.0L/4speed ( now a T5) Got it when I was 16, drove it all thru high school and then some. Still have it after 33yrs, although it really needs a resto.
While you are at it maybe a slightly better cam as well. We built one for a race boat(Same engine) and it pushed that hydroplane to nearly 120 mph which was its fastest time ever so you can do mild work to it to get more power and retain decent mileage.
On the subject of overdrive I believe this has an SROD 4 speed which is Shift Rail OverDrive, so yes. Rad car, I love those old oddball Mercurys from that era.

Another good candidate for the McCool Rustoration!! I really hate those body styles but this one is kinda cool with the turbo and all 🤷♂️👍
These turbo mustangs were bad when new but you are great at what you do. I’m going to watch anyway! ❤️🇺🇸😀
Love how it is the famous Ford Pinto 4 banger with a turbo
if you want turbo noise get a 7.3 powerstroke and put a wicked wheel 1 or 2 on it. you can put out ear drums and with a few upgrades it can be pretty sporty too! Cool car tho, glad to see it again.
What a cool little car. Great job fellas, she needed to be saved.
I'm not a fan of turbos, but I love that whistle, hahaha. Great job! 👏🏻
Put a cool can on it. You put dry ice in the can. It goes around the coils and keeps the gas cold. I used it on My street car dodge dart three sixty.. Used In the high 1980s on my Street car It ran 13:00 Seconds In the quarter with a cool can.👍🙏😊 Kept the gas real cool..
my favorite car on youtube! and i'm not even a ford guy! haha
The Turbo sounds really cool and it makes it feel like you’re going fast until we look out your window and the scene is going nowhere 😂😂😂 Cool revival anyway Dylan!! 👍💪👊😎
Test drove a Capri one time long ago. Scared the crap out of the salesman! Got a free ride home!
You may be able to sell the wheels and tires for enough cash to put some modern easier-to-find stuff on the car. Those high tech deals looked great but are very costly to put new tires on.
Back when I was a tech for Ford in the late 70s these cars were the bomb. Great cars.
Ya think that fuel return line you plugged might be the problem?
Hi, Dylan. Love your videos. I'm working on a tribute truck to my father. It's a 75 d 100 spirit of 76 clone. Let me know if you wanna sell the white grill off that black truck. It's the last piece I need before body work. Mine has an aftermarket tube grill
The Steve Austin "What?!" was a nice addition.
That's a dam awesome car! I would love to see a full rebuild done on it. Also an engine rebuild.
Daisy was like...Dad you forgot me for the car ride! Wait I want to go for a ride!
I would love to see you Modify/upgrade/build this 2.3 turbo. Set it up for EFI.
THIS. If he converted it to EFI and ran a Stinger PimpX ECU with all the standard, bolt-on goodies, it would absolutely rip!
That master cylinder is gonna match that Optima Red Top nicely!
Voltage regulator probably dead on gage cluster, it controls 3 of the 4 mini gages. Cheap to fix. Great job.
Hey man I bench watch all your videos on your channel and love it man I’m giving a like
Great revival. I loved it!
good news. 2.3 turbos are fun.
You may be vapor locking. You need the return line hooked up to cool the fuel in the lines!
Octane booster and non ethanol gas, makes my 82 carburator car run in the heat!
If you watch the video I mention that. This is an archaic style return on the factory system, so I really doubt it would do much. Especially being a dead head. Really would help to be a full return style with a regulator and electric pump.
When your last name says cool in it and you’re a mechanic and a RUclipsr all at once, God really gave this man all.
My old Pinto never liked mountains much, but it wasn't turbocharged.
Exciting resurrection, can’t wait to see more!
