    Two things I respect about PG:
    1. He has the balls and the hand strength to play with gain levels that don't hide much (in other words, he doesn't hide behind pre-gain-laden overdrive that does some of the magic for you), and;
    2. He has matured like fine wine in his playing. Where he used to shred and shred, he now plays with a really killer soulful approach and saves the speed for where it has the most impact.
    Mad respect for PG, and I'm not even a huge fan.

    One of the best shredders. Hands down. Excellent choice to cover Paul and his work. Randy Rhoads did a guitar clinic in Greenburg, PA. It was late 1985 early 1986 and my band was practicing at Hotdog Sound Studio in Arleta California. WE were taking a break from our practice set and a couple of guys poked theirs heads in our room and said, "what's up?" we talked for a few minutes, and they went back to setting up their equipment in the big sound room next to ours. We went back to playing until our time was up and we started breaking down our equipment to put it back in our lockout cabinet. It was at this time I heard music coming from the next room. I could not believe my ears! I had never heard such musicianship in my life! These guys were unbelievable! I asked the sound guy at the front desk "Who are these guys???" He said they are a new band called "Racer X", They just started practicing here a few weeks ago. We walked back down the hall and poked our heads in their door and noticed it was the same guys we had talked to earlier. The bass player said we could watch for a few if we wanted. We hung out for a few, but our presence seemed like a distraction, so we only sat in for about 1 song. Talk about a humbling experience ☹. After we walked out, we just kind of stood around and looked at each other in our practice room while we put the rest of our gear away. We thought we were pretty good until that night. These guys weren't even on the same planet as us! I am not a great guitar player; I am decent but nothing special. These guys had me asking myself "why am I even bothering?!?" They were that good! We saw them practice there a few more times but we knew they wouldn't be practicing at that dump for very long 😆

    I saw Paul with Racer X a dozen times back in his club days in L.A. from '86 to '88. I've met the band too, all very nice people. I believe it became evident to Paul that Racer X was a limited platform for his talents, and the opportunity to form Mr. Big with Billy Sheehan, who was already a high name, was a better deal. Eric Martin had the look and the voice whereas Jeff Martin, a great singer, didn't have the pretty boy looks frontmen were required to have in the hair metal 80s. I was never much of a Mr. Big fan, but I always admired their talent and they are a good party band. Very upbeat music.

      I really like your breakdown - that sums it up perfectly! It's cool that you had a chance to meet them especially back in those days. Seemed like a pretty cool bunch of guys. What was cool about Mr Big is that it gave One of the real shredders of the day an actual platform to build a career off of. Like you, I agree that a lot of their material didn't hit as hard for my tastes. But hearing that first album and how he integrated his guitar chops definitely was a treat. I think after that it felt like their production ran away with them and didn't have that immediacy. Kudos to Paul though - it totally took him to another level, and it turned out to also widen the reach of racer x when he reformed them.

    I was introduced to Paul as a teen from the instructional VHS days, and initially impressed by his speed; what has really stuck with me is his incredible teaching ability.
    Great phrasing, creative arpeggios, meaningful rhythms (not often found in shred) really made me respect him long after I was playing rock music.
    My dream came true when I was able to play with Paul in Nashville as a teen at a clinic at Sam Ash(?)

    Well researched and put together video. Great effort. 22 1/2 mins, and yet no mention of ‘The Drill’ 😉 I know it’s a gimmick, but it’s fun and still makes everyone smile after all these years when ‘that’ solo comes gets played.

      I was sure I covered that lol....EVH did it later, but Paul originated the power drill. If I missed it I'm kicking myself lol.... Thanks man! 🤘😆🤘

    The first time I saw Paul was in a small club on Mr. Big's first tour in 89. It was Paul's 23rd Birthday, and during his solo Billy, Pat and Eric snuck up behind him and smashed his Birthday cake over his head. So, he had to play the rest or the show covered in cake. After the show Pat and Eric hung out at the bar with a few of us. Good times.

      Haha that is a pretty cool story! Props to call for being able to continue a gig covered in birthday cake. It's also really cool that you're able to hang out with Pat and Eric - by all accounts both very stand up guys.

    Thank you for this video. Paul takes the number one spot for me and is still incredibly underrated in the mainstream. People paint him as a super shredder who later went bluesy but he was still a young guy for the first few Mr Big albums and his playing and writing on those albums was fantastic. Not show off shred but exactly what each song needed to be their best and with great melodies.
    These days he’s making fantastic solo albums and has also become one of the best teachers you will find. His enthusiasm for all types of music and for teaching is infectious.
    Then of course he can still run rings around most player and blow them off the stage if he wanted.

    Paul was doing all this at the same time EVH was getting all the recognition and people saying no one had ever done stuff like Eddy was doing. Eddy got the greater recognition because of the band, the flamboyant DLR, the tunes they wrote were outstanding, lots of girls liked Van Halen, while PG and Racer X was mostly admired by guy guitar players. But in my opinion, PG was a more technically proficient player and sophisticated. Although a couple of his songs like Scarified are outstanding, some are second rate musically compared to VH.

    If you've ever tried to learn technical difficulties, then you know how scary good Paul Gilbert used to be. His age is showing these days a little bit, so I don't think people realize how good he was when he was young. I think at times he's been one of the best alternate pickers in the world.

    • @guitarmeetsscience
      @guitarmeetsscience  Месяц назад

      @@brewcewillis8328 nailed it perfectly! But he still plays a mean ax to date. He's just added a lot more variety into his repertoire. But his days pre Mr Big definitely show just how fast he was when he was coming up. And absolute monster picker. But then he went the other way and mastered legato (especially the string skipping arpeggios).
