H1MIN: FG12/50 IR NIGHT VISION

  • Night vision technology was treated with great secrecy in WW2. Their developments were the beginning of modern night vision equipment.
    The Fg12/50 was a German scope fielded with an Infrared light that could see in the dark. While not true night vision amplification, it did provide some visibility and advantage as the IR light was invisible to human vision. These scopes were created for land, naval and aviation assets but were developed too late to have any measurable impact.
    For more information:
    B.I.O.S. Miscellaneous Report No. 66 (British Intelligence Objectives Sub-Committee)
    German Infra Red Driving and Fire Control Equipment
    Also want to thank the Foundation Centre for German Communication and related Technology, who actually got an FG12/50 working again and provided much useful information to the inner workings of this device.

    How do you manage to pick the most interesting topics to make a video on so often? I had heard about these types of IR night vision devices as a potential upgrade for U-boats at the time. Yet nobody had talked about how they worked in such detail! Imagine if Germany had had these in the early war period. They would have been able to ambush allied units again and again and it would have taken time to come up with detection equipment to counter it. It would have been devastating against the night raids the RAF were famous for as even with detection equipment it would have been very difficult to aim at a night fighter because any kind of detection equipment would just show a bright image coming from the general direction. Not enough to guess range.
    Of course thankfully this never happened and these were developed too late to have any kind of impact.

      I think first infantery night vision used in combat was 20 years later in Vietnam. And it only worked by amplifying moonlight, becouse they still didn't manage the power issues (in WW2 experimental night-vision (Gen. 0) existed, but it was bulky, you essencialy looked like a flamethrower operator with M1, huge spotlight underneath it and battery on your back. I think they didn't used it in combat).

    • @Krzysztof_z_Bagien
      @Krzysztof_z_Bagien Год назад +16

      @@kennykentus2919 actually, Germans developed a night vision scope for Stg44 and machine guns, but they only managed to supply a few hundred to frontline troops before war ended. It worked exactly like tank version, only it was smaller obviously, but still quite heavy - more than 2kg for the scope and illuminator itself, then there was battery strapped to soldiers belt for image cobverter, and something like a 13,5kg battery in the backpack for illuminator. It could of course use external illumination, eg. from a tank or Uhu (so wouldn't need that backpack battery and and illuminator).
      It was called "Zielgerät 1229".

    • @kennykentus2919
      @kennykentus2919 Год назад +1

      @@Krzysztof_z_Bagien Yeah you're right. I knew about it, but I thought that it was also only a prtototype outside of a combat. According to wikipedia the efective range would still be only about 100m, so still kind of trash.

      if they had more time it would have been as revolutionary as the jet engine

    • @kennykentus2919
      @kennykentus2919 Год назад +2

      @@ViperGTS737 well how much more time? The Americans worked on it 20 years to get from backpack driven NV to moonlight amplifier and I doubt it wasn't important project. And they were on par with germans during WW2 so I don't belive that germans were ahead, they were just desperate to try it in combat. The story of jet engine is the same. British jet fighter Meteor flew anti-V1 sorties few months after Me 262 saw a combat. They just didn't want to risk them above Europe, to be fair, they didn't need to becouse of Mustangs.

    Ahhh...wake up... breakfast.... and a new top rate video production by H1MIN. As ever I'm informed of something I never knew about before... not the tank turret mounted version which I've seen many times over the years, but the higher powered half track mounted variety. Bloody EXCELLENT work as ever. As I always ask.... Are you working as a professional graphic artist or is this just a personal hobby taken to world class heights? Stunning as ever, and thank you for the time you take crafting your work.

    But how did the gunner fire/aim if only the commander had the night vision equipment? My guess would be the commander would relay to the gunner the distance and direction verbally.

    • @H1MIN
      @H1MIN  Год назад +2

      Thank you, that's a good question. The commander's scope had a metal strip connected from the base of the scope that went inside the turret to control the gun's elevation. The commander's aiming would either control the elevation of the gun or provide the information to the gunner. Have not seen any documentation of the interior's setup. I believe there is an example in Bovington's Tank Museum that shows the small opening on the turret roof. However, I read that it was problematic with the gun's recoil frequently putting it out of alignment.

    I think you make fantastic videos. I think your thumbnails hide the subject of your videos much too much. The large yellow "H1" makes the subject of the video hard to see. I think you would be much better off if you shrunk the "H1" and placed in a corner. The graphic showing the item discussed in the video, should be saturated so it easier to see what the video is about.
    I really think your thumbnails are extremely boring looking when they should be exciting.
