MTLB has been the mainstay of the forest services in the former USSR, along with Mi-8. Much of the firefighting work in Siberia in the summer was done with it.

A tracked truck is always useful.
Worth noting just how many vehicles based on the M113 exist, and in how many roles. The MT-LB is similar, there's ATGM carriers, SAM carriers, mortar carriers, all sorts. Those use the same spare parts, so running low on MT-LBs (and presumably also MT-LB replacement parts) will also cause a problem for them too.
Still better then M113 box for sure.
Only problem is the lack of standardisation in the mtlb, when Sweden bought them from Germany the width varied by up to an half meter on the same model
No, not really. BTR-50 is M113 of east. MT-LB is tractor meant for towing and transporting logistics.
It's important to note that the MTLB is used as a basis for many, many other russian systems and may be counted in other sections of oryx. Additionally, it's likely quite a bit of cannibalism of the chassis is occurring to keep other system in operation
Also when used as an artillery tractor and utility vehicle it's more likely to be far from the front line, reducing the number of of destroyed that get visually confirmed by oryx

MT-LBs are basically the Warsaw Pact's version of the M113. A simple, rugged, reliable metal box that were produced in the thousands with dozens of variants and derivative vehicles for almost any role. Both are no longer produced but are still in service in many militaries around the world.
Russia clearing out their stocks of MT-LBs would be akin to the US running low on M113s. Shows how intense and costly the Ukraine war has been for Russia.
The M113 is NATO's version of the MTLB, not the other way around

No, not really. Or actually, not at all; these are both vehicles with no real equivalent on the "other side".
The MT-LB is a military tractor with some transport capacity, but it is NOT intended for troop transport! They were initially used as rear-area supply transports, as intended. Only when Putin started running out of BMPs/BTRs, the MT-LBs were pressed into service as ersatz APCs. But a .50cal can disable them, and they themselves have nothing better (and no IFV capacity of their own IIRC).
Whereas the M113 is an APC first and foremost, and at least tries to be frontline-capable (in low-intensity conflicts).
tl;dr: whoever puts MT-LBs at the frontline is losing the war.

The good old Pansarbandvagn 401 (Pbv 401). After the German reunification Sweden bought over a 1000 MT-LB and named them Armored tracked vehicle 401 (Pbv 401). They did good work but now almost all are gone. I know some civilians got some and I have seen some used as targets.
Not even half of those made it to Sweden tho. Most of them were scrapped for spare parts right of the bat.
Sweden sold their remaining ones to Finland, where there are still just under 400 of several types of them in total in use or storage.

That being said, there was a huge amount of ex Warsaw pact military hardware on sale that the reunified Germany wanted to get rid of and sold for dirt cheap price. Most of the east German stuff was back then in pristine condition. As an interesting detail Finland decided to acquire almost as brand new 2S1 122mm self-propelled howitzers that are also based on an MT-LB chassis.
@@herptek The number you find online is 1016 MTLB and MTLB-based vehicles were purchased by Sweden of them 550 was renovated 460 as armored personnel carriers and 90 as recovery vehicles. If the 1016 vehicles 228 was 2S1 Gvozdika but all was scraped for spare parts in Germany.
@@target844 I really don't know what you are trying to express. Finland instead of Sweden purchased the 2S1 systems from old East German stocks that I mentioned and currently has some 74 of them.
Other MT-LB variants Finland operates number currently almost 400. Some of these were bought when Sweden sold its remaining ones to Finland. Others were of older legacy.

We are at war with NATO. Also it isn't a war. And there will be repercussion if NATO show signs of involvement.
Meanwhile the US is putting all Patriot missile exports on hold because they have to send them to Ukraine to stop the Russian cruise missiles that ran out two years ago...

In the mid-nineties when we went to a collective farm as schoolchildren (a sort of summer camp with field work weeding the cabbage fields thrown on top), an mtlb was used to ferry us across a ford :)
The M113 is the American equivalent in its versatility. Like the M113, the MT-LB has variants for pretty much every mission.
I got to drive one as OPFOR at the National Training Center. It is incredibly crude, but in a way that makes it incredibly easy to maintain. It has a manual transmissio, but no clutch. You simply slam it into gear. There really isn't much room. I was the shortest in my Platoon and the only one that could sit up straight without hitting my head on the top deck.
WTF, MT-LB does have a clutch, what it doesnt have is a synchro. So you have to rev match the engine and gearbox when you shift, it's smooth if you know what you are doing, or you can grind it into gear if you are in a hurry.
Both pretty damn old but the other being used way more then the other one both having lack of protection or high tech I get combat support for the M113 as it was phased out for the M2 as frontlines breeds changes

M113 is good as battle taxi, at least it's better then ride to battle in a Toyota Hilux. But like you said, it only protects against small arms and light shrapnel.

what's the benefit? Russian railroads can effectively transport them within russia's own borders fairly quickly.
In conclusion Russia has wasted the irreplaceable stockpile of produced by the no longer existent industrial capacity of the USSR & Warsaw Pact. Even if Russia holds any Ukrainian territory at the end of this war it will be significantly diminished as a military and economic power.
What will be diminished, is Russian abilitity to fight prolonged war. It can be argued that they will end up with army better trained and equipped than before the war, just with regular europan level 'staying power' as in none whatsoever.

And better equipped is clearly false, Russia has lost most of it's modern equipment at this point and lots of valuable behind the front lines equipment.
If the war ends in Russia's favor, it would be pretty easy for Russia to refurbish its army into a modern fighting force

2: Their war economy is already in full swing
Russia already produces around 100 T-90Ms a year and 400 BMP-3s
In 5 years that's 500 modern tanks and 2000 modern IFVs which already dwarfs most European armies

I would say it did, the experience in Vietnam led to a lot of doctrinal changes, as well as new technologies and tactics beign implemented which really did paid themselves off years later in the air war against Iraq.
Also, a lot of anti-insurgency tactics and equipment, like the AC-130 owe their existance to the Vietnam War, as they replaced the AC-47.
As for what he said about them ending up better equipped, that has to do with the fact that the Russians are having to pour resources into expanding production lines, paying attention to points of failure in tactics and equipment based on where and how they failed, as well as testing new stuff in the battlefield.
By the end of the war, they will have extra production lines already working (compared to what they had prior to the war), which will cut down the production cost per-unit, which will allow them to replace at least part of the stocks they had previously, not to the same extent to what they had of their "Soviet legacy equipment", since that was basically the accumulation of decades worth of different vehicles and variants of them, that will take decades to accumulate, but still likely going to be in significant numbers, and it the lower production cost might allow them to export some of these vehicles to some other countries, allowing them to recuperate some cash.
That's what i think @piotrd.4850 meant.
fun fact, MT-LBs are some of the most desired armored vehicles by BOTH ukraine and russia. They're known for being reliable, easy to drive, fast, requiring little maintainence, rarely get stuck in bad terrain and they're a very versatile platform, they can do anything from transporting troops and supplies, to mounting various types of weapons, mine plows, anti air defense , med evac.
The main down side is that when they get hit they often get destroyed so badly people have trouble visually confirming it's loss

In the era of drones, you can delete the "armoured" part from the "armoured vehicle MT-LB". Its armour is useless against even small FPV's. Certainly not something Ukraine desires.

With the unusual order seen in the 6018th it probably was the base keeping their tanks in the best shape, so that might be a reason why its so empty rn

Also worth noting that Russia doesn't have anything to replace the MTLB. They only produce BMP-3s currently which is in very low numbers, roughly only a few hundred per year.
They definitely never expected to need to replace them anytime soon, they had enough in active service and storage that they could’ve kept them in service for another 50 years and probably would have.

I mean they will use regular civilian trucks or tractors with cope cages, jammers and off road tires/chains. Not good, but better than attack scooters they are using now, so i don't think its as big of a deal as people think. Armor is nice and all, but if it doesn't do much against artillery strikes and mines that are the main threat, so you can just replace it with regular transport. And its not that hard to weld some armor on top of it.

@@nickcharles1284 I know America still uses some things that are 50+ years old but it’s just a lot more prevalent in the Russian army. Like the most common Russian tanks at the frontline are t-54/55s, t-62s, t-64s, and t-72s, all of which are based of designed 50+ years old. A lot of the APCs and IFVs are also 50+ years old and some of their jets too.
This is what happens when you use APCs as IFVs. A solid vehicle, when used properly, which is the "battle taxi" model.

With how vulnerable MTLBs are to everything from heavy machine guns to drones, mortars, ATGMs and artillery shell splinters, it’s probably no surprise that the open source count of knocked out MTLBs is lower than what is realistic. Also, given the age of many systems, it’s likely that many stored units have been stripped for parts to make other slightly less rusted MTLBs run and not spontaneously disassemble at the first sign of a bump. Hence the apparently much greater decline in stored units vs those recorded as blown up by men wearing VR goggles sitting in a damp hole playing World of Tanks on their off hours. What a world.
A few years ago while hiking in the mountains in Bulgaria, I stopped at a remote village high in the mountains where only a single elderly couple lived full time.
They had an MTLB parked in front of their house. The road leading to their house was very steep and not maintained in winter, so they used it to go to the nearest town to buy groceries every week when the snows came. The machine was in pretty good condition, it was obvious they maintained it pretty well. The grandpa said he was an army mechanic so he made a lot of the repairs himself with the help of a machine shop in the town nearby.
I don't know how they got enough fuel for it tho, these things guzzle diesel like nothing.

Just as they did in the 1950’s, battle taxis have a role to play in near pear conflict. The M113 is still used for numerous roles in the US Military. Roles that are less glamorous than IFV’s and Tanks, but no less important.
Yes. The M 113 chassis is used as a logging skidder, or tractor in coastal BC where it can be steep, with still large trees to move. They go by FMC 's , and have metal mesh cab, with skidding arch in back, dozer blade up front. They are known to pull as much as a Madill yarder. * Oh yeah, the Madill is built on a late model Sherman tank hull...E8 ?

Not every MTLB removed from storage ends up in Ukraine. Many of the beyond repair ones were probably pulled out, scrapped, and parts used to service other MTLBs.

MTLB's/ M113's are a relic of the past. Was a 19k tanker, 2nd bde 1st armored divsion was at NTC August 2017, there was a whole formation of dead/ in op/ broken m113's that were combat dropped then towed by a m88. Im sure 50-75% of the brigades m113's were deadlined at the time. No 1SG's had operational ones, remainder for medics/ mortars/ xo command vehicles. Hell our humvee fleet was a joke too. In fact or brigade had a such a poor reputation for having broken tanks/ bradleys. I cant imagine having gone into was with our brigades vehicle fleet. We took it all to Kuwait in 2017. Fun times.!
That's a leadership failure since all the parts are available including from allies like Turkey which has quite a business modding M113 FOV. Coming from the USAF world what I see from the Army is often strange. AF units even brief ground support vehicles at daily maintenance meetings and if it's not running there had better be good reason. Poor readiness and lack of a thoroughly managed cannibalization program to buffer Supply (cann management is vital to any vehicle fleet readiness) without stripping donors beyond economic repair is impressively lame.

Day 256 of asking for a count of old pre T-54 russian hardware in deep storage, living museums, and Belarus.
Stuff like the T-44, IS-8/T-10, T-34, T-26, IS-3. Tank Destroyers, KVs, and functional prototypes like the Object 279 Atomic Tank they got up and running
Museum or WW2 monument does not count as storage.
I agree it would be fun, but given that the count of T-54/55 is far far less than the count of T-62, I'm pretty sure all those were mostly scrapped to build new weapons and there's just a handful left. For example, we know Russia imported T-34 from Laos a few years ago for ceremonial purposes, so clearly they don't have any of their own left if that happened.
@@spejic1Yeah all of the T-34s that hadn’t been exported were scrapped during the 80s (some were being given to Afghanistan into the mid-80s). IS/T-10 and ISU-152 were withdrawn from the DDR in the late 70s, retired from category 3 divisions throughout the 1980s and officially removed from Russian inventory in 1994. These were scrapped or expended as targets to comply with force limitation treaties.
Russia actually did have quite a few T-34s in operational condition for parades, but the Laos acquisition (Czech made T-34s) allowed them to have an entire battalion worth of well maintained, fully operational tanks + spare parts.

The MT-LB has been produced by other countries. There will be some MT-LBs left but they will be in museums. It won't disappear.
The MT-LBu is meant to transport people. Not necessarily a command variant although it was used as a basis for many systems. The MT-LBu was built in Ukraine.
I always liked this as a workhorse vehicle; squat and strong with the mini turret. Even if it isn't very good it tries really hard.

I've been watching the numbers since the start of this war, and best I can tell, Western estimates of Russian losses are mostly low. Official estimates WAY low.
My guess is, if things continue at what has become pretty consistent rates, Russia is going to be out of about everything by the Feb 2025 anniversary. You can't send 100% of everything to the theater. I think they are already way into the normal "safety stock" levels.

Nice to see the update on the MT-LB and to see their stockpiles are about to be empty of them. Unfortunately it's a bit hard to compare to your previous data on BMPs and total armoured vehicles you posted in October 2023, where you stated about 8900 total vehicles left, of which about 3600 BMPs. If we look at total armoured vehicles (BMPs, BRDMs, MTLBs, BTRs, etc) left in storage, what would an accurate estimate be? Fewer than 5000? Fewer than 4000?

Assuming every unit pulled is deployable (a big if) then, on the face of it, (discounting maintenence issues, etc) Russian military should be in the process of reconstituting thier losses and maybe even be up about 800 units.
What's the average turnaround to pull it, assess it, fix it, and get it into action, i wonder. Are they piecemeal getting them out or creating reserves for a large push?

Yeh, this is totally reliable source, just look at how Ukraine rarely have those on the front line. Reliable, isnt it?
Roughly 2500 pulled from storage. Less than 500 left based on the imagery used in this count. Already fewer in reality. By early 2025 all storages are gone. And by summer 2025 I'm sure also the queues in repair shops are done after which every lost piece needs to be replaced with something else. In fact that is probably going to happen already during the spring because Russia cannot supply these to the front the same speed they are losing them now.
At the same time Russia is running out of BMP-2 and most BMP-1 in storage are broken so takes quite a while to refurbish them to combat use and due to cannibalization it possible takes 2 to make one.

It is simple: They are towing all the towed artillery that has been pulled from storage during the past year, hence a lot of them won't be on the frontline.
Yes but a lot of that towed artillery has now also been destroyed or worn out.
Some is from the 1950’s so will not be in the best of order.

When poland started moving troops to the border, Russia gave Bielorrusia 800 MT-LBs and they are modernizing more than 1k to the 6MA variant that uses the same 30mm turret that the BTR-80A.
We got plenty of MT-LBs here in Finland and we ain't giving them back to Putin's Soyviet Disunion. 😎

The Russian MTLB was replaced by the MLBSh, also a light armored tractor, in 2017. MLBSh has a .50 cal. (NSVT), a little more powerful diesel engine, slightly thicker armor but otherwise pretty similar to the MTLB. They seem to guard numbers of these pretty seriously.

Not replaced. It's just a modernized MT-LB.
A few things about the Russian economy that are largely ignored:
1. Estonia, Lithuania and Latvia have stopped buying Russian electricity.
2. Gazprom (the Russian state energy supplier) went bankrupt 3 months ago and needed to be bailed out by the Russian government.
3. Ukraine has continually been targeting Russian oil infrastructure since Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022. Russia has described some oil refineries as "total losses" with "irreparable damage."
4. Russia has made its oil output a state secret, so that economists can't work out its true GDP with any accuracy.
5. 45 European nations have agreed to tackle Russia's "shadow fleet" (used to skirt around sanctions) of old uninsured, unregistered and questionably seaworthy oil tankers, with a proposal currently sitting on the desk of the White House.
6. Russian civilians in the Krasnodar region are currently protesting at electricity rationing, electricity blackouts and a lack of clean water, with many arrests taking place. The atmosphere on the streets is described by locals, as "like an unstable artillery shell, ready to explode at any moment."
7. The Russian Ruble exchange rate to USD has tripled since 2014 (meaning the value of the Ruble has plunged ~66% in that time).
Russia is slowly being starved of its oil production capacity, oil refining capacity, and the ability to export oil to foreign countries. Over 30% of Russian GDP is currently used to fund its military. 30% of GDP to fund the military is untenable for any economy to sustain, especially considering Russia's economic losses and sanctions since its invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Ukraine just needs to continue destroying Russia's military-industrial complex, while Europe and the US slowly strangle the Russian economy.
8. Russia has lost over 3 million people, mostly young and educated, who have fled Russia, since it invaded Ukraine in February 2022.
9. The Russian army has suffered over half a million dead, or severely wounded men (lost limbs, permanently paralyzed, or hospitalized long-term). These severely wounded soldiers will be a long-term burden to the Russian state, as they will never be able to work again, and will instead drain the economy through drawing disability pensions. These injured men will also depend on long-term medication and care. Family dependents such as young children may also have to be looked after by the Russian state, as they no longer have anyone to provide for them.
10. Stocks of Soviet military equipment, such as tanks, personnel carriers, howitzers and other artillery pieces, are being burnt through at an alarming and unsustainable rate. Calculated on recent losses, military experts have forecast that these old Soviet pieces will all be gone by the end of 2025. Russia will then have to rely on its present military-industrial capacity, which at todays production rates will not be anywhere near enough to sustain current Russian levels of aggression.

In a high intensity industrial war both high and low tech vehicles are needed. A simple tracked metal box has many uses. If they run out of them they will probably need to make something similar. Or try and use armored all wheel drive trucks instead.

@@murphy7801 Not really it was basically just the following; sell oil and gas for most of your profits, use those profits to subsidize jobs in unprofitable sectors because the rest of your system was very inefficient and corrupt. Then try and use those ineffeciently produced products to increase your international sway be it through trade or by trying to destabilize 'unfriendly' regimes. The basic idea was not particularly complex and most of the system was extremely bad, because it had neither the need nor the will to be good. The only reason it's looked upon favourably by mostly older Russians is because the current situation in Russia is on the verge of getting worse than the 90's in Russia.

The armor is so thin that a 50 Cal can punch right through it. Even 40mm grenades can penetrate it. You fire 3 shots from an AK or AR into one area, and you'll penetrate it. AT-4s, LAW rockets & RPGs can open them like a tin can.

@@matthewjones39 it's not useless. It was designed to tow arty and protect it's crew from shrapnel. It was never designed for frontline assaults. If used for more mundane ops like resupply, med evac, moving troops around in the rear, it's a useful vehicle.

When I was stationed at the Planet aka Ft.Irwin,Cali in the mid '80's, FMIG had about 3 dozen or so "meatballs" that they would roll out during OPFOR training rotations. I tried to get picked up by that organisation as a driver of one,but I was told only 19 Deltas (Cav. Scouts) were accepted. No 19 Echos (tankers). Thought a latteral, stick shift, oil cooled V8 would have been cool to operate.

Why put them in storage when they will be needed in 1.5 years max anyway? They were out in the open for decades, one more years won't do much extra damage. At least 1200 were on Oryx

Why would you bother moving equipment that has been stood outside for decades into better storage now? Especially when it's equipment that you're actively using in the war you're currently in. That's quite literally the equivilant of rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic.
There's quite a few comments here so I'll just answer them all at the same time. Since a lot of this equipment has been in deep storage, (decades..) they have very little idea how well it works. Not only will it decay but there's a chance the vehicle has been gutted for parts to sell on the black market. They without a doubt have to inspect and refurbish most of this equipment in a workshop, so it would make sense to have their end destination be somewhere they won't break down again. A lot of garage space has opened up too, considering that russia has used a lot of its modern vehicles that would have required extra maintenance. I suppose another idea is that they have been actively concealing their depots from satellite imagery too. Russia wants to move their equipment near ukraine for quick deployment, so it would need to be hidden in order to avoid Ukranian air strikes.

I would imagine all of the ones that were immediately operational were already sent to the front and the remainders will be eventually sent to depots as they sort out which ones are worth the investment of getting operational again.
If that's the case, it'd have to be close to the Ukrainian border, otherwise it wouldn't make sense to construct new one as a rally ground. But being close to the border would attract attention of many people, which make the assumption of some secret base highly unlikely. @@vissler

Remember when in like week 1 it was 'Ukraine will collapse nothing can be done to stop russia.' In 2022 ' the real russian army hasn't arrived yet and once they do Ukraine will fall' in 2023 it was like 'Ukraine has run out of ammo the war is over'. We were so wrong to regard russia with respect all this time.
