I think its not entirely correct to say MTLB is not the Eastern M113, especially since you showed us that is pretty much has ended up being that. M113 also is very modifiable and has been used for a variety of roles, including artillery tractor. In their use there is little difference, only the original role differs. I served in the Finnish army mounting these everyday and its mobility and the amount of stuff/personnel you can stuff into one is unparalleled. Our CV90 units always wondered how we could just cross bogs like it was nothing and the profile of the MTLB made it so it was very hard to target in a hilly forested country. Oh and also being cheap is a bonus, and maintenance is a peace of cake. Yeah I would not want to take fire while being in one but its not really meant to be under fire. Its a super good battle taxi, use it in APC role (Drive infantry to the combat area and wait)
I think WD's arguments are valid. M113 was designed as apc, but MT-LB not. Its story is much similar to Bv-206. Also, MT-LB is very crampy, which indicates that it was not designed for the infantry. It has no ramp for infantry. A tank can tow artillery, which does not make the counterpart of the MT-LB. Yes, I also accept that many countries use it as apc. But, also they use the Bv-206s. MT-LB2s story much similar to Bv-206.

The MT-LB is the successor to various Half Tracks of both US army and Third Reich Heer ( M2/M3/M5 half tracks and SdkFZ 250/251) in terms of its purpose as a multi-purpose towing+ combat + troop carrier vehicle. Basically this is one of the true successors of WW2 era half tracks.
The MT-LB, unlike the bmp-1,2 and 3, have excellent mobility in rough terrain. The engine is really, really powerful and it can negotiate very tricky terrain. Also unlike the bmps. It also due to the massve engine have a "sneak" feature. Large bore engines on low rpms are incredibly hard to pinpoint even when you hear them. Since its also low you can sneak it into places where other vehciles wont go and cover it up. We used this with RBS56 on it for several years here.
@@Mornomgir Are you even aware that BMP-1 and 2 have nearly identical chassis? They are faster but have higher ground pressure than MTLB so on the level. BMP-3 is an offroad monster with no AFV coming close.
@@Klovaneer yeah. I worked with all of them. The bmp3 is not an offroad monster. It is just not shit like the bmp1 and 2. None of them comes close to what the mtlb can do however.
Very interesting video and couldn’t agree more with your analysis, coming from a current MT-LB/V driver in the Finnish army. 🇫🇮 Sometimes I wonder why we still use these old soviet shitboxes, but then again it does it's job when used for it's intended purpose.
MTLB is not just a shitbox, it's also a multipurpose shitpost machine. You can do ANY kind of modification to it. APC, IFV version, rocket launcher platform, , ATGM launcher platform, AA gun platform, naval gun platform, flamethrower platform, anything can be equipped to this thing.
I generally despise little kids (of any age) referencing games when commenting on any military channel, because it shows that they lack the mental capacity to differentiate between fantasy and reality. With that said, I like the MTLB in the board games MBT and IDF because of it's great carrying capacity and versatility. That is NOT meant to be taken as a comment on its real capabilities or performance.
tbh, no afv or ifv has sufficient protection against any modern threats, be it rpg, atgm or tank cannon, doesnt matter if the btr-50 or the PUMA, their both pretty much as fucked if hit. Just very few Centurion, Merkava or T-55/72 based heavy APC's can tank any hits.
