Wow I didn't know thermal imaging existed in the 70's but then again most inventions have been around longer than you'd think so I guess it should come as no surprise. Also the an/pvs 2 scope producing a 40,000x light amplification is excellent for 1960's technology.
Was just watching a video on Forgotten Weapons about the M3 Infrared Sniper Carbine, which was an M1 carbine fitted with a night vision scope and illuminator system that was developed somewhere around 1943. They were used quite successfully in Okinawa to defend US positions from Japanese night attacks, and also saw use in the Korean war.
My dad was a marine scout sniper and used one in the pacific probably on saipan and tinian. He said that they introduced it to him in the hold of a destroyer with all the lights off and that he could see clearly. It was top secret then because the or was easy to detect.
Supposedly, the first prototypes used in NAM were red and first lent to the gunners in choppers. They saw demons and started firing into the night sky nearly hitting other choppers in the vicinity who in turn had their gunners firing at flying demons too!
Theres a video where I guy explains why. During the Vietnam War is when the very first night vision goggles were introduced. Instead of green they had red lenses. Supposedly the gunners in the helicopters were going crazy and shooting wildly in front of him. He said they were seeing demons flying around all over, sitting on top of trees, etc. Can't find the video on RUclips. I watched it on Instagram.
The wwii us sniper scope shown was actually a copy of the German "Vampyr' system. The Germans had the first operational "night vision" and had small units mounted on StG 44's which the US scope was an exact copy of, half track mounted units and IR search lights and had an entire unit of Panther tanks painted black with a smaller IR spotlight which the US copied and used on the M48 and M60 tanks. The US didn't come up with it. They copied captured German systems.
Early red NVG allowed you to see other dimensions. The government quickly switched to the green colored filters.

In Vietnam we used the starlight scope mounted on the M-60.It proved to be quite useful.
Still those barefoot rice farmers handed the US it's ass! LOL!
