I just got the Note Air3c and I'm very happy with it. A note on the battery: yes, it's worse than a b&w screen, but it's significantly better than the Samsung S7+ I've been using previously (for the same stuff - reading pdfs and note taking). So it's still better than a normal lcd tablet.
I own note air 3c and I think I might return it for the Note 3. I'm a software engineer, and while note taking is definitely something that I want to get into (I use obsidian on my computer and my mobile devices but I haven't really done much handwritten note stuff yet.) i dont really do it that often. I've had e-readers for decades and I decided to upgrade from my old kobo Clara HD because I really wanted a larger screen and Android app support. I read a lot of comics, manga, and novels and I started to find the Clara's 6-in screen to be a little too claustrophobic. The Note air 3C definitely does fix that problem, and having the subtle color is nice especially for comics, but I just don't see myself using the extra features. I'm never going to watch RUclips videos on that thing or even listen to audiobooks; I've got a phone for that and a tablet for video which means the primary use case for me is reading media. I want something that I can use to read, write and occasionally lightly browse the internet which means the extra features and the extra $100 for the 3c just doesnt make much sense. Plus, I just don't feel like the color ink technology is all that mature yet even though it is impressive. When I decide to upgrade in 5-10 years from now, ill bet the color ink design will be on par with the black and white solutions today. Another thing to just kind of throw out there, I've got a phone, a tablet, a laptop, a steam deck, a switch, and a couple other devices plugged into my USB power strip. Having an extra cable and having to manage the battery of the note air 3C every other day as opposed to every few weeks is a big deal for sure. Anyway, great comparison.
Thank you for your professional comparison. I am considering buying a NA3C or NA3 for research paper reading. Before watching your video, I prefer colour version because I want to look at some experiment visualisation with color. But I finally decided to buy the NA3! The only advantage of NA3C seems to be the colour screen...
I’m looking for the Note Air 3 or Note Air 3C for the same reason - research papers and textbooks. Did you end up getting one? What are your impressions?
@@RickGladwin I bought the Note Air 3. It is definitely a good choice. Good bettery life. The android system can let you use browser to search and reading paper just like using labtop (You can also download them). The eink screen also made my eyes feel better after long time reading. My favorite part is this is portable, so I can take it to everywhere and read paper (greatly increase my reading time). Highly recommond.
Thanks for your review, it was very useful and well done. There is actually one minor thing, which surprises me. Is there really no difference between battery life when reading without backlight and having backlight on 50 % on 3C? Both exactly 14.28 hrs? That does not give me a sense.
Very useful and interesting video. Thank you. I have the NA3C and hope that the software issues with the NA3C can be soon resolved. A major problem I have recently had with my NA3C is bizarrely with the Kindle app continually crashing or freezing the device, despite being uninstalled and reinstalled. Just the Kindle app which hasn’t created any problem on my NA2 or Nova 3. More recently, after several uninstall and reinstall, the Kindle app seems no longer to be crashing the NA3C but its very much fingers crossed!
@@davidr1431 Did you have a chance to demo both before choosing? Those are the two main things I’m looking at when deciding between the two, especially screen darkness/contrast. How much difference did you find?
@@RickGladwin Hi Rick. Yes I did. I found the higher resolution in black of the 3C was offset by the kaleido overlay which created a grainy texture as well as darkening the screen. The lack of contrast between the screen colour and the ink was also a problem (at least for my eyes). The light needed to be close to maximum to make any difference in normal daylight and this, combined with the BSR ran the battery down quickly, which also bothered me. I was very happy with the 3 in terms of contrast, brightness and resolution and would pick this again if I needed to choose between the two. Having said that, I don’t really need a colour screen. My use is mainly maths notes, reading on kindle and Reddit (!) Also, since then I bought the Go 10.3 and have been so happy with that that I sold my Note Air 3 which I wish I didn’t have to do but both was too much of a luxury.
hello Voya. Thank you for the very enlightening review. I have my first e ink tablet which is a Bookeen Notea. I had it for three years and even thought it did its job it’s has started to slow down after the latest software upgrade. I was between getting the note air 3 or 3c. your review was really clear. I ordered the note air 3
Seeing such videos really reminds me of why I left Onyx for Supernote. The "updates" decreasing the quality of the tablet was really standard and im so glad I left that world. I think it's hard for people who have not experienced it to understand how much of a pain it is until they experience it with their own hands (and so for more than a year so that they experience multiple software updates).
Good point. Was considering swapping my Supernote Nomad for NA3 because the screen is just too dark however, maybe I’ll need to persevere with an attached book light 🤔
Hi Voja! Thank you for your dedication in your videos! They have been very helpful to narrow down my quest for E-ink devices since I will be going to medicine soon and I'm divided... I was wondering if you could maybe do a video on what you recommend for university students? I haven't found a video showing how textbooks look like on the devices and what size is best for class notetaking and studying. I'm not really sure if I should buy Supernote A5X2 or A6X2, or even one of the Boox devices exactly because they are not distraction free + can do so much... *But, they are really expensive :( * I only have high school as reference, but my workflow consisted of using notebooks for sketching diagrams and fast note taking during class and then doing my homework and reviews at home, as well as writing notes on lots of PDFs and PPTs. Once again, thank you for your reviews!! Can't wait to see what you'll be showing us next!
Thank you for the video. Based on your review, I purchased the Note Air 3 - I do not need color screen and battery life is very important to me. However, as a previous Kindle Scribe user - I could not believe how noticeable the pen lag is in Air 3 comparing to Scribe. I love Boox platform with all the features it offers and the form factor is beatiful in my opinion. But I am having a really hard time getting used to the pen latency after using Scribe for several months. The writing experience is just not that good comparing to it, I am not sure I will get used to it. It is a real bummer since I really like the device otherwise... I hope this is something that can be addressed via firmware rather then hardware limitation. I tried all refresh settings and didn't find much improvement but worse ghosting. I may have to return it and wait for the next generation or the B&W version with lower latency.
I like your content. Still looking for that perfect E note taker. I'm looking to have something I can take to meetings, jot down notes and to dos as well as something I could carry around to jot down thoughts and ideas. But then I want to be able to convert all that content into to dos, then convert the to dos into a planner (daily, weekly, monthly, yearly). Any recommendation on what might fit that need? Basically use pen and paper/sticky notes today. Problem is they arent organized and I fill up a note pad but forget to check past pages for follow ups/to dos.
I have decided to buy Note Air 3 due to limited budget. But the resolution 227ppi is bothering me. I mainly intend to use this to read PDF textbooks. Is low resolution going to be a problem? How is the PDF reading experience?
I´m facing a very strange issue with Air Note 3C regarding ghosting. And it´s annoying to see that no one else seems to report the same problem! My first device worked really well for about a month. I could see the ghosting automatically fading away by the action of Note Air software, but then, one day, the ghosting become so absurd that was impossible to work. Even a full refresh wasn't able to clean the screen, so I end up returning the product. In this case it was clearly a product malfunction. Boox send me a new one and the same thing happened again, only now, a full refresh manage to clean the screen. This happens in all refresh modes. I know ghosting is always present in this devices. The question is: why the ghosting automatically fades away for a couple of weeks and suddenly I have to rely on manually refresh procedure? Hope you can say something about this effect. Regards! I'm still waiting for a 13" "color" e-ink device to come out. I might be in the minority but I'm loving the direction the boox products are going thus far.
Mooink Pro 2C is expected to be so, but after this review I'm not sure I want to give up on the brightness and battery... What I'm hoping for is a higher PPI 13" but from what I've read there isn't one with more than 200 coming out soon...

Kaleido 3 is not the battery hog here. The BSR (Boox Speed Refresh) dedicated GPU for speeding the display up and managing the ghosting is the battery hog.

Hello Voja. Question: I have an original Note Air that is still working fine. I haven't used it for the last year or so, because of eye surgery, however, my vision is much better now, and I am using it again, and still enjoying the writing experience. In you're opinion, would upgrading to a Note Air 3 make THAT much of a difference ? I do use the Note Air for Kindle, and other reading apps, but they appear to be working fine. I guess the question is do I want to spend 400 US on a new tablet that is really only faster ? I'm not sure the upgrade to an Air 3 B/W is worth the money ?
Will there be a difference? Yes. Will it feel like a $400 worth of a difference? No. Simply put, if you are happy with your device and it does what you need it to, then there is absolutely no need to change it :)
Hello Voja i ve had my notebook air 3 for about 6 month now .I noticed several times when i was using it next to my Mac laptop writing notes the screen or pen started acting up i would have patches that are irresponsive and the problem disapeared as soon as i moved it away from my laptop. I suspect it s something related to the magnets of my laptop i dono? 🤷🏻♀️Did anyone have any similar problem?
is it possible to copy a directory structure with alot of folders containing psfs from pc to the boox device at once without having to do it folder by folder ? thanks !
Of course, but to do that in the easiest way you'd need to connect the device to your computer via the USB cable. Then the device appears as a USB drive on the computer, and you can simply copy over entire folder structures.
Considering that no such update was provided for any of the earlier BSR enabled devices, I'm inclined to lock in "never" as my answer. I hope I'm wrong ;)
I only have the 2023-10-25_10_28 as the latest fix version of 3.5 on my NA3C, and when I check it says that it's the latest update. And that's the one that slowed down the page flipping speed.
No, it doesn't. Tilt function isn't dependent on the type of screen. All writing "magic" including precision, pressure and tilt is doing Wacom EMR layer that is beneath the screen and a pen. If you want more info, Voja has a video about this technology uploaded recently.
@@cameroncz3197 Ah OK, It's just that I thought one reviewer said the C had the tilt pencil capability and they left it out software side on the monochrome version... Thanks for clearing that one up. The only thing I have found now with the Boox series is the way the eraser works... It's not accurate enough for cutting in edges when doing illustrative style drawings, as it seems to erase too much line.
@@JamesWilliam70 I have just tried the eraser on my Tab Ultra C pro and as you wrote it is not the most accurate one for very precise cutting. And I discovered that it work in really strange and inconsistent way. The same size of eraser erase differently on different widths of lines. It is like cutting a part of vector path in same lengths but endings of the lines are different depending on width of line and are protruding from the end of lines you cut. I hope you get it. English is my second language. If you want e-ink device for drawing I recommend check out Supernote with its drawing app Atelier. I don't have Supernote to tell you about it in detail, but you certainly can find some videos about it. However, what I already know it is very good app with bright future.
Bummer. Air note 3C is slow turning pages and that's what the user will do the most XD lol. Very detailed and insightful review/comparison, as always. Thanks!.
Subsequently I discovered that it was the AI features that slow down the page turning. So it isn't the device. If the AI features are turned off, then both are equally quick. This is something that I covered in one of the videos I made after this one.
@@MyDeepGuide Thank you for the update Vojislav! With low contrast being an important issue with the Air 3C, do you think that just turning the front light on completely solves that problem, or is the Air 3 still more readable than the 3c?
BSR is a myth and Battery performance of NA 3C is abysmal compared to similar BigMe inknote color + lite which handles refresh handsomely than NA 3C thru proper implementation of software itself, even with processor of lower grade. Battery life on BigMe inknote color + lite is much better than NA3C. Only thing I miss on Inknote color + is the way pdf reflow is handled by Neoreader on NA3C. NA 3C struggles with proper display of fonts for East indian languages even for AWZ3 format books side loaded on NA3C.
@@MyDeepGuideDo you still find yourself reaching for the 3C over the 3, having both in your possession? What I mean is, is your personal preference unchanged?
@davidr1431 Nope, hasn't changed. For my use NA3C does exactly what I need it to do. Now, if they would stop making it works with each update, that would be even better. But so far, still works well enough for my stuff.
Yes, as the title of the video says, this is a video that compares Note Air 3C with Note Air 3. Why would you be surprised with the content, if you actually read the video title and looked at the video thumbnail?
And who could possibly use the chapters and skip over sections that are not relevant to their own needs? It's an impossible task and a concept to behold.

Yes, magnets will directly interfere with the operations of an ePaper screen.
Should I remove the cover plastic on screen? Is It better for reading?
You mean factory screen cover?? No, do not try to remove. You will destroy the device.
is it possible to copy a directory structure with alot of folders containing psfs from pc to the boox device at once without having to do it folder by folder ? thanks !
Of course, but to do that in the easiest way you'd need to connect the device to your computer via the USB cable. Then the device appears as a USB drive on the computer, and you can simply copy over entire folder structures.
thanks
When are they FINALLY going to roll out upgrade where you can TURN OFF BSR on Note Air 3 C?!?!
Considering that no such update was provided for any of the earlier BSR enabled devices, I'm inclined to lock in "never" as my answer. I hope I'm wrong ;)
What update do you have? My latest update is 28/11. It's there a newer update?
On which device? There are two in context of this video.
@@MyDeepGuide on the na3c. You said that the recent upgrade slowed it down.
I only have the 2023-10-25_10_28 as the latest fix version of 3.5 on my NA3C, and when I check it says that it's the latest update. And that's the one that slowed down the page flipping speed.
Is the page turn speed still a problem Months later?
I’m 55 and watching this will change my life Tired of average
I saw many reviewers reported that boox tablets phone home to servers in China. Is it ok for your datas ?
@@Bos_roseus I’m wondering the same. Atm I’m leaning towards Supernote.
In China your data is actually safe.
I really like the monochrome version, but does it loose pencil tilt?
However, what I already know it is very good app with bright future.
thx,👋👌
Nice watch ;-)
Just send me the one you don't want 😉
Well I can't, because I only have my own personal device, the NA3C. The other one is a review loan which gies back to the company.
@@MyDeepGuide oh well.
Thanks for the vid anyway 👍
@@MyDeepGuideDo you still find yourself reaching for the 3C over the 3, having both in your possession? What I mean is, is your personal preference unchanged?
@davidr1431 Nope, hasn't changed. For my use NA3C does exactly what I need it to do. Now, if they would stop making it works with each update, that would be even better. But so far, still works well enough for my stuff.
I thought they gift the review one@@MyDeepGuide
You're literally comparing black and white versus color instead of prices
Yes, as the title of the video says, this is a video that compares Note Air 3C with Note Air 3. Why would you be surprised with the content, if you actually read the video title and looked at the video thumbnail?
sure there is some good info here but taking WAY too much time to get across simple stuff......
And who could possibly use the chapters and skip over sections that are not relevant to their own needs? It's an impossible task and a concept to behold.
SICK AND TIRED of watching reviews on the Screen, Battery , Speed and Pen Features of the E-Reader. Please Please Please can any of you The E-Reader Reviewer make an in-depth review of the Microphone and Camera features on them? Please Please Please ! The manufacturer made a huge investment on these two features too and I assumed these two factors had an effect on their price tag. In relations to these two features, I believe the manufacturer had pre-install their Apps relevant to these two features, Microphone and Camera such as recording and converting speech/voice to text transcription AND scanning thus translating different language using their own pre-installed Dictionary. So Please Please Please, I am begging you to make an in-depth review on this
Neither of these has a camera... I mean, at the very least, you could try and read the specs of the device, before going off on a rant.
@@MyDeepGuideBlind Me !!!!!! OOOOpsssss what an embarrassment. All this while, I thought ALL E-READERS reviewed by All the E-Reader Reviewers had a Camera and a Microphone Features as part of their Note Taking Capabilities (Note Taking via Scanning Text & Figures and Note Taking via Recording Voice) Apparently NONE !!!!!!!😅😂 Not even the Highly Praised and the frequently reviewed Onyx Boox.
@@takamurshi Tab Ultra C Pro has a camera
@@IgorAntarov Thanx for the info Mr Igor, but did any of the e-Reader Reviewer make any comment or in-depth review on the use of the Camera of the Tab Ultra C Pro?
