  • Moe Berg-the major league baseball player, OSS operative and legendary linguist-was one of the most remarkable secret agents ever deployed by the US. Whether authorized by the government as an atomic spy or choosing to surreptitiously film Tokyo of his own volition, Berg relished and accomplished his espionage missions, yet he died penniless and with little acclaim.
Nicholas Dawidoff brought Moe Berg’s achievements to light in his best-selling 1994 book "The Catcher Was a Spy."
In honor of the Pennant Race, Dawidoff will share his latest thoughts on the only Major League baseball player to have his card on display at CIA headquarters.

Moe Berg is a perfect example of the meme: "The thing about smart people is that they seem like crazy people to dumb people."

I've always hoped that a movie would be made on Dawidoff's excellent book.
But who to cast as Berg?

Just saw the film version of the book. I’d never heard of Berg or his story before. Maybe as a British citizen I’m less likely to have, though I do have American relatives I’ll ask. I wondered how much the film storyline had been embellished. Listening to Dawidoff, I could see how the film was trying to paint various character aspects he mentioned he had clues to. Interesting that in this lecture which precedes the making of the film, the main spy plot was barely mentioned until Q&As, and there is a lot of ambiguity about the whole thing. Barely a mention in this lecture of his sexuality which is heavily played on in the film too. The part of the film where they land in Italy really felt misplaced and just some action to try and appeal to a wider audience. It sounds to me like there would have been more intrigue with further operative plot elements. To be fair, the film concludes that so much of the character and everything else remains an enigma. I wonder what the author thinks of the film version.

An audio track would have been useful.
