    I have a 3080 rig and it has been gathering dust since I got my SD, playing Doom Eternal at 60fps ultra settings, are you kidding me!? It's insane!! Don't be fooled, when switching from gamemode to desktop mode it's literally clicking 1 button, it just switches profiles it doesn't reboot the SD...
    What people are failing to see here that even if you have to tinker a but with the system to get everything set up as you like, in the end it's still a PC, not a console you plug in and play, that's why I hate that so many reviewers call this a console....It's not, it's a PC in the formfactor of a handheld. That's all there is to it. Me personally I love playing with this thing seeing what I can hook up to it and whatnot, it's a blast! I thought the same thing...at first. But the more titles that come out and realize this is the way, the more the games will be supported out of the gate. Most new games already work. I'm really enjoying mine, I guess the main thing to be aware about is that there is no visible division between the Deck's "console experience" (keeping it handheld, playing Steam games that are verified) versus the "pc experience" (dongles, desktop mode, running games from other stores...). Nobody is telling you what to do and that's great, but it does mean it's easy to get into situations where the experience isn't super smooth. I flip back and forth between one and the other; getting EGS games to run one day and just playing some Hades the next. Hell, I'm typing this on the Deck right now, using it as a desktop replacement hooked up to my monitor, kb+m and ethernet through a dock.
    The controller is amazing by the way. Best sticks I've ever felt, actually makes me perform better in the games that use them.

    I think it's utterly brilliant, and the best handheld released to date. The amount of things one can do in a sitting is freeing compared to a Switch. The little things they've implemented like the Steam Shortcuts, the Variable Rate Shading, 40HZ mode in the latest beta update, the ability to play something like CS:GO with gyro and trackpads, then hop over to arena mode in Apex. Then with Emudeck, can play all sorts of different eras of gaming. It's truly everything I wanted a modern handheld to be. Eventually will pick up their dock and do some programming and tinkering on that side. Already had some fun loading Emudeck on my buddy's before I got mine this week. If they keep hammering out updates and iterate on this thing into Gen 2 I'll be very happy to upgrade by then.

    People make a big deal about the Deck's size but part of why its as big as it is, is to fit adult sized hands. My switch was uncomfortable to play handheld until I bought a proper grip (satisfye) but once I did it became about the same size as the Deck.

    • @keyholes
      @keyholes 2 года назад +3

      I wholeheartedly agree on the Switch with grips, the only thing is with that you can get different styles of grip for your size hands. There's a huge amount of variation in "adult sized hands" - for folks with larger hands, the Steam Deck looks great, but I've definitely heard some feedback from smaller-handed people that it just isn't comfortable for more than half an hour. And that's worrisome.

      I definitely feel that's a little overly simplified and critical. Sometimes you just want to pick up a controller and play a game. You don't want to deal with x, you don't want to deal with y. you just want something to distract you and consoles are fantastic for that.
      There are definitely things that are a worse experience on consoles, just like there's definitely things that are worse experience on PC. As an example dying light 2 absolutely god awful on console. Great (well ok really) on pc.
      Elden Ring, a solid experience on console, was awful (I'm not including the steam deck because not everyone has one. I do but nonetheless) on pc.

    Im making this comment at 4:36, so forgive me if you talk about this solution farther in the video, but i would HIGHLY advise any deck or controller user in general to make a new template for controller to Mouse+Keyboard translated input. And set a custom mouse curve.
    Heres why::
    You always want left stick to be WASD.
    You always want Right Stick to be mouse input with the same curve profile you have learned.
    You always want Then "a" Button to be spacebar.
    You almost always want "x" to be the R key.
    You can assign the Scroll Wheel to up and down on the track pad.
    You always want your RIGHT Trigger to be LEFT Mouse Click,
    You always want your LEFT Trigger to be the RIGHT Mouse Click.
    (The trigger to mouse clicks are swapped because LMB is the primary mouse button, while RT is the PRimary Trigger. Trust me, life will be better this way.)

    There's certainly general issues and concerned that come with pc gaming, but the extra functionality of the console part of the steam deck, makes pc gaming in general feel less beta and more premium. Still sometimes it is annoying when you run into an issue, but the fact you can play any game you already own on steam - outweighs those annoyances. There's a lot of weird work arounds, but this day and age, there's always weird workarounds for anything outside of nintendo consoles.
    If you want to play well enough optimized games with a lot of limitations - play on switch. If you want everything else with almost no limits, play on Steam Deck.

    As an owner of the Steam Deck I can safely say... it's good. I myself am the type of person that was kind of hoping it'd be an easy experience to use, and so far, it has been. That said, I've only played three games on it and they don't push the system to the extreme (Vampire Surviver, Gordian Quest and Archvale).
    From the first moment I booted up the system, I found the opening sound have a terrible vibration to it (very unpleasant to the ear). I've been doing some research and it looks like I'm not the only one to have an issue with the trackpad with it's vibration/calibration being off. I sent a message off to Steam support and after waiting 2 weeks, they finally got back to me telling me that I can turn down the amount of vibration... which is basically equivalent to someone asking me if I turned it off and then on again (what a complete waste of time). So, unless they actually get back to me with a working answer, it looks like I'll have to either turn off the vibration completely (which is a shame since I paid for the most expensive version of the Steamdeck) or open up the system and try to fix it myself, and I REALLY don't want to do that.
    For those that are interested in the Steamdeck and are completely comfortable with opening up, tinkering with their pcs and the specs, then I can definitely suggest this to them. For those that want the out of the box, don't have to worry about anything, then I suggest you look elsewhere and wait until they hopefully work out most of the kinks.

    I think Valve's primary focus is portable play. They will highly likely move towards the "docked" functionality in the future. But it has to be said, Valve has never really promoted this as a "switch" where the docked gameplay is integral to the device. Now in the first couple months it will be targeted people who already has Steam, who probably already own a computer, but wants a portable companion device. It will make sense for them to switch focus the larger the market grows. My biggest take away owning a Steam Deck is that it performs much better than I anticipated, with far fewer bugs than I expected. I think Valve has done an absolute amazing job with this one!

    I wish folks stop hoping for a Steam Deck 2 just as the excuse not to admit the current one has problems. Especially after going thru all this nonsense to get one. Also, I don’t understand the rush. Valve is a capable company and this is 2022, not 2010. It’s not heart-stopping to have Gamer PC specs in the shape of a handheld gaming console, so why not just wait until the bugs and kinks are ironed out? They rushed to make a Linux based game system and then have to update it like every two or three days? I admit I’ve been tryna use mines as much as I can, but the Steam Deck is a SOLID reminder that you had better be having a lot of Steam games you like playing or you’ll be stuck in emulation world tryna fill the need.

    Great video; it's a very honest take on it. Yea, it can be odd but I have to say that I love my Steam Deck! One of the first things I did was to create a script to turn on the SSH daemon and then registered it as a non-Steam game within the Desktop Steam client. Now I can turn the SSH daemon on from the SteamOS gaming mode by just running that script from the Non-Steam games section of my library. I've loaded a whole bunch of games that way, some that have really surprised me. So Humble Bundle fans rejoice! You can SSH your Humble Bundle games into Steam Deck! Not all will work, but it's a fun little bonus. So far I've been playing Schildmaid MX that way.
    As for Valve's Deck Verified program, I've noticed that many "unsupported" games actually play, but have odd launcher issues that you can ignore by using the desktop environment. There are also issues with FMV's that can crash some games or just cause you to miss cut scenes. Many just haven't been updated I guess. For instance, I can play Persona 4 Golden and Tales of Berseria just fine, and they're listed as "unsupported." Maybe I haven't gotten to the point that crashes them?
    Anyway, niggles aside, playing a game like Jedi Fallen Order in handheld mode on the Deck is an amazing experience and feels truly ground breaking. Even my wife did a double take when she saw it, surprised at how good it looked, and she's not a gamer!

When things work, they work great, when they don't, you *can* get them to work (most of the time), but you have to put in the work to get it to work. Luckily you usually only have to do that once or figure out how to do it and then do it that way every time.

    In my experience less then 1/2 of the games that are "unsupported" are.. .well mostly supported.
    The issue that makes it unsupported is controller enablement. In short those games default to mouse/keyboard and the controls either don't work or are unwieldy out of the box.
    There is an easy fix for this: set one of the pads in Steam as a mouse. Then in game, enable controller support/map controller buttons to it. That's it.
    unless the game won't even start, that's a different issue altogether.
