    Clearest explanation I’ve seen. I already knew this because we have problems with roots and are on City well. Thank God we had a good plumber service in SE MI as well. He told us we had to have the drain cleaned out about twice a year. Well, it backing up again and I guess I need to call them. I think my adult son is the culprit!

    Hi thank you for your good video.
    I live West Bloomfield.
    My house basement flooded very often during the heavy rain recently. The water came out the floor drain near by furnace and discovered there were weeds coming out of the drain pipe entering the sump pump pit, but sump pump is running properly and the pit water lever is low.
    I hired several plumbing companies to jet sump pump line to remove root & Debris and Jet Storm trip & line from furnace room to main line.
    But during the recent heavy rain, the water still came out the same floor drain and flooded again.
    The city technician came to check the city storm and sewer lines were running properly during the flood.
    I am frustrated about this problem. I really appreciate you if you could give me a advice or recommend a good plumber to help me.

    I remember when I lived in Warren, MI our house had a big tree in the front and we used to have problems with the drains in the basement getting clogged. Every year or so we would go to home depot, rent a snake, and my dad would snake the drain. I remember him struggling to get the snake back up the stairs after he was finished. Hello Jose. I'm sorry to hear about your situation. The line might just need to be snaked. It's always a great idea to get it camered as well to see what's going on. I would also contact your Realtor and see if the seller disclosed any issues with water backing up in the basement on a Seller's Disclosure Statement. @@johnhein2539 Hi John. Sorry to hear this. I would act quickly if it's starting to back up. Usually after a heavy rain the drain will plug completely. Did you get the main drain line camered during the home inspection? This is usually extra and often skipped. Try opening the drain cleanout cap and run all the water in your house. You should be able to see if the water is flowing or backing up. There still could be roots inside the top of your main drain line catching papers as they pass. A camera will find the issue. Hope you can help. My house has an attached garage. The drain to the garage comes into the basement, well that pipe was clogged (previous owner) and they broke the pipe and had a bucket to catch the water coming from the garage. Now there is a hole in the floor with water that does rise into the basement and my floor drain is rusted and is also clogged. We have since concreted the drain in the garage so no more water will flow into the basement. Do you think this will be an easy fix using a snake? Also what can I put there to cover up the hole? Thanks!!!

      Hello Gordon & Roxanne! Thanks for the comment. I'm not sure I follow exactly what is going on and it's difficult to comment on without any pictures of the problem. So I will do my best. I would contact 3 plumbers minimum and get free quotes from them on fixing the problem. The cheapest quote is not always the best, but 3 quotes will give you an idea of where everyone is at on labor and pricing. If you need a drain snaked, I recommend having a plumber snake the line. You can rent a snake from Home Depot but you can do more damage than good. Leave it to a professional. It might be an easier and cheaper fix than you think. Some advice or knowledge pls!
    Had heavy rains ans water came up through the drain in the basement and through the walls.
    We are on a well and septic.
    Had plumber snake and found roots. No one knows where this pipe goes.
    We are planning on cutting down a big maple next to the house as it is too close to the foundation.
    I was told the cheapest way was to just pour cement down it and not worry about it since i have the sump pump installed (which is against a wall).
    1. My concern is will that cause issues with other drains that may be connected?
    2. Will i still have water coming up since cement is porous?
    3. Can it cause the hydrostatic pressure to push the water up small cracks on the floor?
    Also, Paid too much money for a "reputable" waterproofing company to install their pipes to find out they have holes and used duct tape (but working on getting that resolved 😬😤)
    Should i just have a camera ran through? We has also tried a locator with no find.
    It is a 40 y.o. log kit home - not many codes due to being out in the country....
    😪

    • @GrantWarrington
      @GrantWarrington  3 года назад

      So sorry to hear about your situation. Plumbing was installed in your home for a reason and I wouldn't suggest filling pipes with concrete. Hire another plumber that can camera and locate the camera head. The locator can penetrate the ground easily and give you the location of the pipe. Also, make sure your downspout extensions are attached and are at least 5' long to get water away from your basement. (I have a video about this on my channel). Clean your gutters too if need be and improve the grade around the problem area by adding dirt to slope away from your home. I just had a major plumbing issue at an Apartment building and after 2 months the 3rd plumber was able to find and fix the problem. I hope this helps.

    Hi, I Have a follow up question.
    What do you think the problem could be if water backs up into a bathtub or toilet from the basement floor in the middle of the night when there was no water flowing in the house overnight? Thank you.

    • @GrantWarrington
      @GrantWarrington  4 года назад +2

      Hello Peter!! Thanks for the question. My guess would be that your drain line that is leaving the house to connect with the city sewer is clogged. You might need to get it snaked. A lot of times the drain line will clog after a heavy rain because there are drain tiles around the perimeter of a house that funnel water away from the foundation and out the drain line to the city sewer. Your waste water in the house also flows out that same drain line(in most cases) so if there are any tree roots in the drain, toilet paper, sanitary wipes, etc., then the drain line becomes easily clogged with all the extra water and debris. I suggest you call a licensed, reputable plumber to snake the drain. Call around and get 3 quotes. I hope this helped.

    • @claytondelanie
      @claytondelanie 2 года назад

      I had this happen to me in a very devastating way recently. I'm still wrapping my mind around how if the clog was on Peter's property, the city sewer backed up into his bathroom. I can see how maybe an entire street may have gotten backed up if the city's system was clogged. Can you expand a little more on this? I do not have foundation drains.

      Great Question Romeo. Thanks for asking it! I do not recommend plugging drains. Your plumbing system is designed to function the way the house was built. Your drain may be plugged or collapsed if you are continuing to get water in the basement. I would recommend a plumber camera the drain line. RE:Romeo Santiago. If you live in a low area where the city sewers become flooded and are backing up into all your neighbors, then most likely your house drain is not plugged. If your house is the only one being flooded then, it's probably your house drain. If it is a city problem, two solutions:
      1. You can install a check valve (backwater valve) in your drain near where it exits your house which will prevent water from flowing backward into your house.
      2. If you have a basement with a floor drain and no other drainage fixtures (toilets, sinks, laundry, sump pump, shower) than you can install a threaded plug or standpipe or a commercially made expandable plug in your floor drain.
      You could even do this IF you have other fixtures in basement, but beware if the flood water rises above the level of say the sink or toilet, then flood waters would flow out from the sink or toilet.
      You might want to remove the plug during times when flooding is not expected, if you need the floor drain to be open in case of some type of leak like a water heater leak.

A week or so later, the kitchen sink is stopped up and basement toilet doesn't work, floor is flooded in the basement all carpeted. The guy from the city handed me an ordinance and said it's nothing to do with them. The water is black though. Basement utility sink is filled with black water. That's not from my house or use. @GrantWarrington  Год назад +1

      You need to get a camera in there. Call a plumber. You may have a break in your drain line under the floor. Releasing the stopper introduces a full drain pipe of water into the system immediately …. compared to continuous running water. The system gets overloaded because it hits the broken section and starts to back up. That’s a guess with limited info. Please keep me posted🙏🏼

    the only tree on our property is a big one in the backyard? that couldnt be the problem right? since our system drains into the city sewer in the front of the house

    • @GrantWarrington
      @GrantWarrington  2 года назад

      Correct. If the sewer drains to the front then the tree in the back is not the problem. Was there ever a tree in the front over the drain? The roots could still be active.

    Buying a house and in the basement there was a sewage leak coming from that clean out drain under the stairs. Owner had a plumber come and snake it multiple times to remove sludge. However no camera was put in. Should I be worried?

      Hello Mike. Thank you for the reply. If you are in the process of buying a house and you know there have been multiple problems with the drain, I would definitely consider a licensed reputable plumber to camera the drain. Try to be there with the plumber and you can watch the camera too. Also ask the plumber if he can email you the video for your records. I hope this helps!

    In 2018 we had a rainstorm that caused city streets to become rivers. Our basement backed up with sewer water. Our basement toilet flooded over and back flowed from our drains. We now have a floor drain hooked to the sewer that backs up with human waste. I had a plumber come and clean out the drain. Nothing came back up so no roots. He returned with a camera and nothing wrong with the drain. It backed up a couple times last year then nothing. Now that the ground thawed we now have standing water in the basement. The house was built in 1961. I’m trying to get ready to sell and I have to call and have Sheetrock and doors removed again!! I’m not in the position to put 10 to 15 k in the house!! Any idea what is happening? I live in north Iowa.

      I'm so sorry to hear this Vickie. We own an apartment building and we had a basement unit back up and we couldn't find the problem. It would back up and then go down,. We cameraed the drain multiple times with different plumbers and they all said you have belly's in your drain with standing water that we can't see the bottom of the pipe but it looks good. We finally found a plumber that ran all the water in the apartments and flushed the belly in the pipe with clean water so he could see the bottom of the drain pipe with his camera. The bottom was broke and missing and it would catch toilet paper and clog, and then release it. We busted up the pipe and replaced it. Maybe you have a similar issue.

      Omg! That’s awful! I’m getting ready to sell my house because of all these issues as well. It’s a 1958 house that was updated and looks great, but since I moved in 4 years ago, almost every appliance has had to be serviced. Thank God, I put a laundry room inside the garage by putting a long wall the length of the garage. The washer and dryer were down there and the first time it happened, I had to wade through water to get clothes out of the dryer. The people next door had the same issues and they moved!
      I spend more time fixing things here than enjoying the house. I’m too old for this!

    My basement floor drain is coming up one day, and then nothing… today it has water… is it possible to pour hot water and baking soda in drain to clear it out? I read that on google.. seeing how effective it could be

    • @GrantWarrington
      @GrantWarrington  2 года назад +1

      More than likely there’s a blockage. I would recommend calling a plumber out to see what’s going on. Sometimes your main drain line is clogged with tree roots and toilet paper and starts backing up to the lowest point in the house first. Your floor drain. You might notice it backs up after or during a heavy rain and you running the washing machine and taking a shower. This overloads your clogged drain with water and it backs up. Then it will slowly drain and you might think the problems gone but it’s slowly getting worse. Keep me posted. 👍🏼

      Shut off the water to whatever water fixture is leaking and call a plumber. If you cant find the water shutoff on your fixture, turn off the main water supply to the house in the basement and call a plumber.

    Water has backed up in the basement. A man came and dug in the backyard. Told the renter the water was running clear, both ways. Hours later the basement flooded again with raw sewage. Shouldn't he have snaked the floor drain in the basement?

    • @GrantWarrington

      Hi Sandra. 👋🏼 Sorry to hear this. Snaking the main drain is usually the best place to start. Or do you have a septic system? Also, was it an actual plumber that came out?

    I have been 9 yeaes in the same propety and i had only 2 times water coming from the drain in the basement, those 2 times we had very heavy rain, some rivers overloaded and the city closed the gates, i had clean raim water with leaves and some litlle branches coming from the drain with clear water, looking for estimates 3 plumbers gave me different opinions and contradictory information, i am willing to pay as long as i have good diagnosis but one told me i need a compound drain check and sum pump, but does not offer me warranty, a second one told me it was my gutter connected to the system just by directing that gutter to the yard will be enough, the third one told me was foundation problem, but i told him i have never seen water coming from the walls those 2 times came straight from the basement drain so he said ok lets try a drain check without a sum pump and lets see, that lets see and dubious diagnosis makes me lack of trust, do you think a compund system will be sufficient?

    • @GrantWarrington
      @GrantWarrington  3 года назад

      Hi Andres. Thanks for the comment and sorry to hear you're going through this. I would redirect my downspout to the yard like the second plumber suggested. The rain water will overload your drain to the City main. Sounds like the downspout is currently tied into your drain tiles. Secondly, if the City sewer is overloaded and backs up that's when the water can back up into your home. You can install check valves in your basement floor drains that won't let water enter your home. I would call one more plumber that has a lot of great Google reviews to get another diagnosis. I don't think you need a sump pump and I don't think you have foundation problems. (My opinion, not having any further details). Sounds like it's problems with the city sewer. Call the City and tell them the issue and they should check their main sewer line. I hope this helps😊👍🏻

    What if you don't have clean outs in your house

    • @GrantWarrington
      @GrantWarrington  3 года назад

      Hello Thomas! Thanks for the question. All houses should have cleanouts. I've seen homeowners pour concrete over top of them and bury them. A good plumber should have a piece of equipment that can locate your cleanout cap. I hope this helps.

      I have the same issue. Floor drain but no visible clean out. We just had the whole system snaked (main pipe and floor drain). We also put that Green Gobbler stuff down the toilets to try to dissolve gunk in the system. Now it seems there is sediment blocking the floor drain as it's backing up again. How can I end this cycle for good?!! 🤦🏻‍♂️

      RE:Timothy Wright. Most places have landlord/tenant laws concerning this type of problem. If her city has a landlord/tenant agency or advocate you could contact them, If not, she could file a case in small claims court or hire a lawyer, Make sure to first thoroughly read the lease and document all incidents of flooding and times she has contacted the management. In some cases if management has failed to fix the problem, she may be authorized to hire a plumber and submit the bill to management.

    Groundfloor house,When it rains heavily,the manhole drain outside home chokes and sewerage water comes back through the bathroom drain,I stuff the bathroom drain with old towel and polythene packet and put a heavy weight so that sewerage water does not enter bathroom,,any solution for this ,kindly suggest

    • @GrantWarrington
      @GrantWarrington  3 года назад

      Hi Mohammed!🙋🏻‍♂️ Sorry to hear this. Sometimes the manhole get full of debris(dirt) in the bottom and it stops the flow of water. If you've ever seen a "Vac Truck" they are vacuuming the debris out of the manhole and drain lines. Is the manhole on city property? If so, call the city and let them know there is a blockage in the manhole and explain the situation. They should come out and fix it. If the manhole is on your property then you might need a plumber to snake the manhole drain or a Vac Truck. I hope this helps you!!👍🏻 Best of luck!

    So if I see some water in the drain then thats normal?

    • @GrantWarrington
      @GrantWarrington  4 года назад +1

      Hello Rich Lo!! Thanks for your question! If you are referring to the water in the basement floor drains at 1 minute and 18 seconds into the video then Yes. You should have water in your basement floor drain. The floor drain is a P-trap that holds water just like your P-traps in your sinks and bathtubs. The bottom of the P-trap holds water to keep sewer gas from the City sewer line from coming up into your home. The drain line where all the water and waste exits your home seen at 1 minute and 53 seconds in the video should not have any water in it when you remove the cap. This line is angled towards the City sewer line so the water runs downhill. If you see water in this line then that means something is blocking the drain line causing water to back up. I hope this answers your question. Have a Fantastic Day!!😁👍🏡🙋‍♂️
