I just bought a 1v and was scratching my head on some of the features and where/when to use them, this video series had been invaluable and a huge asset! I didn't think it was a difficult camera to use for about 80 percent of the features but I knew nothing about the extras until I watched your video, I can see what you mean about the quirky menus now but I LOVE the camera when it's dialed in now!!
I know this is one of your older videos but am just considering this camera now. I picked up a Canon F1 and Minolta 9 after watching your videos and found them very helpful. I own a lot of EF mount L series lenses and use Canon digital cameras and don't find the use of the 1V that challenging. Thanks for yet another great video.
The first and second video was pretty good as a former military instructor I believe the third video should have been strictly a hands on video and given time to allow a student to go to the functioning. I think it could have three hours long. Since I have the book which came with the camera which have been a years ago, I can always look at the menu thank you for a job well done.
Thank you! The late-90s camera menu systems are always hard to make videos about. In all the cameras, they're pretty Byzantine and hard to navigate. You're right, it could be hours hsowing how to do everything with this camera.
I'm enjoying watching your video. I own three Canon films cameras ,which are the 1V,RS ,and the EOS 3 ,of wish I had put away years ago after I start shootings digital. I was surprising when I open my Camera 💼 and took out the Camera and all three of them still had films in them. At least I had taken the batteries out of all three. Now I shall continue watching the third of your series on the 1V.
Maximum FPS: 10fps with ATG Canon EOS-1VHS (frozen/weather-sealed/HSS, 10fps) 10fps with Canon EOS-1VHS with Canon battery pack 7.0fps with Power Drive Booster E-2 6.0fps with Power Drive Booster E-1 3.5fps with BP-E1 3.5fps with CR5 The ATG and Canon EOS-1V series are better options than using Nikon F5. ATG/Canon motordrives can be removed whereas Nikon F5 is fused in, resulting less weight if you don't need the high speed nor the vertical button. But the Nikon F5 has the last built Higheye Point Viewfinder, which is removable. The last removable viewfinder on Canon was the New F-1.
+David Hancock You don't see many reviews like yours nowadays. They only do reviews to sell or people posting but can't explain in details. Many can't answer questions /or know if it can be done. It's silly seeing many "Opening the box" videos.
angelisone Thank you. When I decided to set the tone for my channel, I wanted to make it different, which I thought would be really hard with the glut of photography content on YT. I realized, though, the point you made: most channels fell into three categories: Sales pitches by stores and such, personalities looking to build their SEO and justify their third-party deals, and people who just enjoy sitting in front of a camera. It's been a fun challenge working to maintain a channel that is as accurate and factually correct as I'm capable of making it. And since I used to teach, I love answering questions. I'm lucky to have friends and inspiration from some similar channels, namely Shawnee Union, Chuck Jines, and Fix Old Cameras. And, of course, my viewers are really good at pointing out my errors (and I always appreciate that since it makes my next videos better.) :D
Hi David, thank you for this presentation.I have just bought this camera,...and,...understand the frustrations it presents! I can not even set the functions on this camera, for whatever reason!.I get a PF-0 come up with a flashing 00 underneath, and the control dial does nothing!..I have the camera set ot default setting,...would this be a problem ,..do you think?
Is there anyway to make the AE lock button strictly an AF lock and make the shutter release button lock the AE when held half way down? That is how I have my T2i set up and my 6D is set up similar. Thank you for the video! I just bought one off of eBay and it shows up in a few days. Can't wait!
+Michael Bisig I think so but I can't recall for certain. I haven't used this since I sent it back to the owner and I can't recall all the AF settings.
For some reason these 90's type menu systems of 1 setting per menu at a time doesn't bother me at all. I'm fairly young too, and I often hear younger people complaining about these things especially haha. Kids that are accustomed to using smart phones generally can't wrap around using these things comfortably right away. I'm 24, but maybe because i owned so many things that had menus like this as a young kid that it seems fairly natural to me to just start pressing buttons, and looking how the minimal interface ( lcd screen) changes to intuit what option I've just accessed.
That makes sense and you're in the range of people who grew up using technology like this. I always hated my dad's car's stereo, for instance, with all-mechanical buttons (including the presets) so that when I'd press the pre-set button I could feel the gears and levers behind the buttons engaging. I liked my mom's car's stereo with all the electronic buttons and dials. Same basic thing, I'd say. Being comfortable with the tech of our time and less so with older tech.
So very thorough and the best tutorial for the EOS-1V anywhere! Thanks so much.
Thank you!
F-4 no. 1 is actually what is also called "back button focus". This is a function many people find very useful.

Thank you! Once you get these set up for how you like them, they're great tools and most users really like them.

Many thanks for this wonderful series. I've just bought an EOS-3 which is pretty close to the 1V and these videos have answered a lot of questions.
Thank you! Yeah, the 3 is a really similar and nice camera. I've been using one off and on for the last year or so to do a video series on the 3.

Thank you! I love finding old film. It's a great thrill to see old pictures for the first time.

+angelisone Every model has its pros and cons. And yeah, the permanent motor drive on the F5 is a pretty huge weight issue.

When you push M.Fn the first time, the top three digit number is the number of rolls that your camera has shot, resetting after 999.
+tjsa krebs Got it. That makes sense. I probably should have realized that.

f-0 can be changed by pressing Cfn for 2 sec
+TheIsraelPost Thank you!
WOW OKAY, this thing REALLLYYYYY has CUSTOM OPTIONS LOL
Holy cow yes.
It seems you don’t like this camera but many say it’s the best film camera of all time. Franco Fontana used one.
I did not like it. Empirically, the Minolta 9 had better specs, so I'm not sure I'd buy into the idea that it's the best 35mm camera ever made
