- The UK's Labour Party has painted a campaign van pink in an attempt to attract women voters. We are glad they didn't keep going with that strategy.

The whole issue with the pink van being patronizing to women isn't about the fact that the van is pink.
It's about the fact that THAT'S what they did to reach out to women. Not some ads about women in the industries, or high-profile female workers, etc.
Pink vans. That's their effort.
Kind of like people who voted for Hillary Clinton BECAUSE she doesn't have a penis between her legs.
Of course there's nothing wrong with the idea of a politician being female, and the alternative was worse, but if I were American, I'd vote for Hillary - NOT because she's female. Because she's not Trump. And that's it really. She's not particularly good or anything like that.
Liran Piade I mean, she’s been in the political sphere for a good long while, and seems to get a lot of respect from both sides of the party. Which is why the Republican side found it so important to bash her (even before the election)
@@liranpiade4499 Personally, I'd vote for the Pony. LOOK AT HOW CUUUTE IT IS!
I mean. I don't know if the distinction is that vast. But, yeah. Exactly. That was their effort.
I have gotten detention for less effort, lol.
But, you're correct, dude. Lol.

When I realized it was John's voice in the mock ad I lost it. All I could think of was him recording in a studio shouting, "PONY PONY PONY"!
It's not his voice

Well, non-condescending except that he kicks off by saying "both parties" because, what?, Americans can't understand the concept of having more than two parties? The third-largest party was in coalition with one of the "two" parties at the time this video was made, for crying out loud. It had approximately 10% of MPs at that time.

We need to finally take a stand when political parties think that the "women's" vote is some minority when women make up 51% of the world's population. Maybe if you just treated women like a citizen of your country then they would vote for you.

You know what's getting on my nerves? There's the PC Police, but worse than them is now the Anti-PC Police Police. Every critique or push-back is now equated to "offended." That woman on the video basically said "I don't think this bus is a good idea and here's why." That is a critque. But people are taking it, and just about every other push-back that disagrees with their own views, as people rolling on the floor in fits of offense. One can't make a legitimate observation about something they perceive as problematic anymore because people will come out and (arguably offended) mobs accusing them of being "offended" or "too PC."
Well said
No, the PC police are still far worse.

All things aside, that pony seems to be really enjoying the brushing.
"Reaching out to women" is only necessary, if your party does not CONSIST to significant parts of women. They treat the topic as if women were some kind of different species with different means of communication... And if you really want to be voted by more women, maybe have a female candidate that pushes for women's rights...
The Tory party has had three women Prime Ministers while Labour has never had a woman leader. (Okay, one was only PM for three weeks but she still counts)
@@karlbassett8485 She still counts :'DDD she would have probably taken back all women's rights on the labor market instantly, if she could have.
Oh, that commercial was just wonderful! The sheer look of disgust on that woman's face when he asked her to pet the pony! xD, I fell off of my chair laughing!
Who the fuck cares what colour the van is? Does it really matter? I mean, what colour should they have painted it?
Oh no, but muh patriarchy! Can't you see that women are oppressed by the color of a van? IT IS NOT A FIRST WORLD PROBLEM!
My thought exactly. Why make a big fuss out of what colour the bloody van is when people should really care about each party's policies on gender issues? I am not from the UK so I am not particularly inclined to any party, but this just seems shallow.
Zeltasz
And what made you think that? How were they sexist?
Diana Peña by making the van pink as an attempt to appeal to female voters they implied that women can otherwise not be interested in politics unless they made the van a specifically "feminin" colour. By denying so hard that the van was pink its pretty clear that that was what they had intended
Tom, you ever consider that you looked to much into it, especially since the campaign is run by a woman?

I WANT THE PRETTY PONY!!!!!!! PRETTY PONY PRINCESS FOR THE WIN!!!
Aaaaah, the days when a pink bus was the most offensive thing in politics
oh yeah this days
This would be like trying to appeal to all men by driving around with a blue van with guns and beer painted on it while the driver shouts at men to vote for them with an obnoxious "action hero voice".
You mean that wouldn't work?
Yeah, but that would work for men like me!! 😂 😂
Men are, as a group, ignored by modern politics. Whereas the idea you describe would be equally facile and patronising, it would at least be a start for the idea that men have separate issues that are not shared by women and should be addressed by political parties, just as those of women are addressed.
@@Norvik_-ug3ge the are not ignored, they are just not being approached by political parties because parties already consider men more involved into politics (this is true especially for older people and the traditional household gender stereotypes of women not caring/talking about politics) and also because men already benefit more from policies. example, the last EU Commision study found that on average women make 14,8% less than men (i dont care about what happens in the US honestly) ec.europa.eu/eurostat/statistics-explained/index.php/Gender_pay_gap_statistics#Possible_causes_of_the_unadjusted_gender_pay_gap
@@apokos8871 With all due respect, I beg to differ. Women are paid precisely the same as men are paid for equal work. Women take home less wages because they work fewer hours than men do, or because more women, as a block, work at lower paid jobs than men, as a block, do. In some cases, such as prize money for all four tennis grand slams, women earn more than men earn for work that is shorter in time, much lesser in quality, and with many fewer opponents of quality resulting in poorer matches. As for men's issues being ignored, I note you have nothing to say. The idea that men are ignored because policies already benefit men is hilarious. Women are the dominant voting block in every liberal democracy worldwide. They live much longer than men live, guaranteeing them a majority of votes. Do you see women digging up roads in the rain, or cleaning out sewers, or driving lorries through the night? Why is that? Are women incapable of such work? Or are they in fact the privileged sex, protected from such work by men doing the shit jobs that send men to an early grave?

+Sara Candel
What about New Zealand? You know, "Australia's Australia".
What American politicians can teach politicians in the UK: you don't need pink vans to show you care about women - you need binders full of women.
Funnily enough, pink was, and in some cases still is, associated with masculinity in some cultures.
+Beowulf DW Main reason is that pink was seen as a shade of red, and red was synonymous with blood. Or royalty.
It was only changed when ww2 came around. The nazis categorized gay people with a pink badge. Just like they had Jewish people wear a yellow one. So the USA being as insecure about it's sexuality thought it was more of a feminine color. So then we started to dress baby girls instead of boys in pink. Girls were dressed in blue.
+Krwzprtt it wasnt just a shade of red, it was specifically a lighter shade of red for children, the same goes for a bright blue
+firudu Right. The association of girls with light blue came from Renaissance art of the Virgin Mary, who was always shown wearing a blue veil.
It's true

this was probably the funniest clip of last week tonight I've ever seen.
Well Labour has won my vote.
There's nothing inherently wrong with a pink van being used to appeal to woman. Its the fact that they tried to deny it was pink, and the fact that they are playing not just on one stereotype, but on many stereotypes.
There's nothing wrong with having a conversation around the kitchen table either. Until you specifically imply that its the only place to have a discussion with woman, as they are not allowed at the boardroom table.
That pink Barbie bus with the jacuzzi was lit
I love the way he says pony
That Union Flag in the top left corner at the start is upside-down.
thank you
It must be a sign of distress!
On a show presented by a British man. I can't believe they got that wrong.
Not to be rude, but I've never understood... how does one tell how the flag is upside down? It's not like the picture showed where the hoist was supposed to be on the 1st and 4th cantons in a way that makes it overtly obvious... maybe they didn't have time to flip the photo and thought no one would notice?
The admiralty never gave a right way up for the Union Jack, traditionally it is flown one way up but not mandated. Like when people say it is only a Jack onbaord a naval vessel this is false the admiralty again approved the use of Jack rather than Flag to refer to the national flag in the early 1900s.
OK, the pony was supposed to be our big secret vote winner. Who leaked details of our new campaign to John Oliver?

To all the haters crying out reverse discrimination! This is why this is messed up: It's supposed to be about politics, and yet this is a pink van where women can talk like they are in a kitchen. I bet guys would be equally annoyed about a baby blue van with video games being played on the side. "where men can talk about politics playing video games like they're at home in the basement, or at their mom's house, not around a board room table."
Actually, men wouldn't be outraged. They'd play the fucking games.
I'd be down with it. They would probably get my vote if they do that.
RUclips User Stereotyping, gender, and age discrimination, and ignoring the fact that the average age of gamers these days is late 20s early 30s depending on where you're looking? Whew, do you have a news letter I can subscribe to?
I'd play the games too, but that's the point. I'm a woman who doesn't like pink very much (I'd like a red bus please - but that would look too socialist for the Labour Party, I suspect!) And I like games and football and I can read a map....
How is this bus appealing to me? Trust me, it's not and that's the point. They are assuming ALL us women will be terribly excited by a pink bus. Maybe there's a nail bar in there (something else that would bore the pants off me)? And I've even heard that some guys like pink. Shocking, I know!
I do like ponies though. ;-)
RachelJurasic In their defense, they do need votes of women who like pink as well.
The should have painted the van 50 shades of grey.
You know, the pink van makes the media's fixation with Ed Miliband's Bacon Sandwich Moment look a little pathetic in hindsight.
They should have had CGI Vanity from the live-action Smurfs movies doing the Labour Party "pony commercial", because John Oliver's voice is so perfect for the character.
I love this show but there is one word in this video that I find really irritating: 'both'. You can't refer to 'both parties' in the UK, there's more than two parties! Conservatives and Labour do have the majority of the votes but the SNP, Plaid Cymru, the Liberal Democrats and the Green Party are all very serious voting options in the UK. Oh and there is also the Uk's answer to the Republican party (UKIP) but no one should ever consider them a serious voting option. We've had a far more democratic system than the US for a long time because of the variety in parties and though we're not quite as representative as European countries who don't have the first past the post system, lots of us are pretty proud of the extent to which British politics is starting to take more notice of parties like SNP and the Greens over the past year so it bugs me when people ignore this. Urrrgh rant over. John Green is awesome.
Lucia Willow ye but only three or four ever come close to having a large number of seats - labour conservative SNP and libdems
I would argue that UKIP, or their successor the Brexit party, who have many million more votes than the Greens, and have had multiple MEPs elected, are at least as 'serious' a political party as the Green Party, who have a solitary MP and some councillors in England. Compared to their party equivalents on the continent, the Green Party in the UK has been a crushing electoral failure. And before you raise first-past-the-post as the reason for that failure, you might glance over to the Irish Republic where PR-STV is used and the Irish Green Party are also a very minor player.
@@Norvik_-ug3ge You said that 1 month ago about the Brexit Party? Where have you been for the last year?!

No. It's traditionally a colour associated with women....
Fiona Payne Actually, I'm a woman. Is painting the bus pink a little eye rolling, yes. Sexist? If it is its not obvious to me.
+Estarile
Well, they're a political party, not a company or individual.
If Theresa May said; 'We need more male voters, so we're going to give the original white box to the females. And we'll paint the other votingbox blue with a car on it and we hope that'll help. Because men will be attracted by the toy-car and like it, so they'll maybe want to vote as well' then I'm sure that fully grown men wouldn't be happy about that either.
It has more to do, I think, with the belittling thought that females can be influenced by a colour like that.
'We need you to wear this mind-controll-device milady.' 'Oh certainly not.' Ít's in pink.' 'I want 5.'
We're not toddlers. They never suggest that men will vote for something because they give out lego's.
+Estarile - I may be a mysterious, Schröedinger-gendered internet entity, but I personally quite like the color pink for reasons unrelated to gender stereotypes. Fun fact, "pink is for girls" was an idea popularized by child clothing manufacturers after a period of gender-neutral white before which pink was, in fact, for boys. And blue was for girls. Before which, again, white gowns for all kids, which meant hand-me-downs and thus fewer sales. So we have some factory fatcat to thank for randomly ascribing certain colors to certain genders! Look it up if you like, folks! ^-^
@@Estarile years late but whether the bus is pink or not is only a small part of the problem with this. It's the whole "women belong in the kitchen not the boardroom" that's the sexist part - which is odd given that Harriet Harman was meant to be a pioneer in equality.
I think that the colour was chosen to attract attention and publicity but the incompetent Labour party leadership failed to direct the attention into a valid discussion and so it just became another nail in Milliband's coffin. Other gaffes include campaigning against zero hour contracts but hiring event staff on same contracts. Getting photographed whilst eating. And of course the Edstone, engraved with cryptic slogans which didn't take a genius to work out meant nothing of substance.
It is ironic that ponies now have a much more male centric target group

The union jack at the beginning was upside sdown
I think the issue isn't 100% about the color of the bus. It's the message they attached to it's purpose. I mean. Discussion around the kitchen table? Are they serious? I live in a fucking third world country and the last time a male politician was THAT patronizing to women he ended up dying in exile (not only because of the patronizing part of course, he was kind of evil)
Maybe in the UK this is patronizing, but in the US, women's groups often choose the color pink specifically because of its cultural association with femininity. So is this a case of a cultural difference, is it just offensive because Labor isnt an exclusively female party, or is this just finding offense in a political setting where it doesn't really exist?
Would sound about right. A lot of people, not just women are very uninterested in our politics. When you get patronising PR stunts like this to try and engage voters, it's no wonder why so many people think politicians are out of touch.
it's not really. one thing feminists have forgotten to say is that the Labour Party have been using this colour for a good few months at press conferences. we're being infected by the same asinine feminist debate the US is having.
i will say this, John Oliver did try to become famous in the UK by being a bit radical on political humour. he wasn't very good.
The main problem is not that it's pink. The main problem is that someone decided that they had to make it pink in order to "appeal to women", instead of... y'know, actually giving a shit about women. Because actually giving a shit about women is hard and stuff, it involves thought and effort and all that horrible 'work' crap. Painting a bus pink is easy.
GwresYnKernow Do you actually know that, or are you just making it up? Caring about women and campaigning in an election aren't mutually exclusive, and obviously a van used for that campaign has to be _some_ colour. There's no reason to assume they chose the colour pink in lieu of caring about women.
This is just another case of women need something to bitch about.
I would actually very much like to pet the pony, it's adorable
That bus looks more red than in the actual clip to me.
