    Good stuff. I have watched many (dozens) great Notion videos. However, with very few exceptions, they don't provide the keystroke-level, step-by-step tips and how-tos that this video does. It can be overwhelming to try to dive into Notion when much of the content is of "finished" Notion examples but without the "how did I get here" steps that were required to reach this level of completion.
    Thanks!

    I just discovered Notion and your videos are a lifesaver. I have rarely seen such a well-organized, comprehensive and thorough video tutorial (with great production quality, too!) on youtube. Every time I go 'how am I supposed to embed this feature? how am I even going to google this for instructions?' your videos always has the answers and the detailed process. Also, the speed of your narration is very friendly and well-paced - I'm not a native speaker of English but was able to follow along really well without backtracking. Thank you so much!

    **Video summary**
    0:00 Intro
    The last video covered an overview of August's LOS in Notion. The following videos will start to go through each section and flesh them out in more detail.
    This video will cover the basics of how to build a Command Centre dashboard.
    This is a pretty simple page and will also be a good opportunity for learning how to use Notion.
    The basic functionality of Notion will be covered here and will be covered more slowly and is a good place to start for absolute beginners.
    The command centre is the main page to access the rest of the system.
    Aim to keep it as simple as possible, while giving you quick access to the most important areas, while organizing everything.
    August has Focus, Growth, Business and Home/Life as his main groupings on this page.
    1:52 [image]
    Everything in this section is either text, headings or links with one weather widget embed.
    (2:45) Go to the new page, give it a title, add an icon and cover

    3:40 Create Headings
    (3:30) Create each of the subcategory headings
    2 methods to create headings, either enter text and adjust by using 'Turn into', or type' /h1' and select Heading 1 and enter the title.
    Adjust the text colour.
    Drag Headings into position side-by-side, using the indicators.

    5:30 Create Layout
    (5:25) Change page layout to 'full width'
    (5:45) Change the background colour of headings
    (6:18) Switch between Dark/Light mode using settings or by using the keyboard shortcut 'Ctr+Shift+L'
    Try to use colour to guide, it's especially useful on a big dashboard such as the command centre.
    If you don't have a system at all yet, then creating the command centre is a really good way to start to lay out a general structure for the system you want.
    Type out all the sections you would like to ultimately have under each heading.
    You can then build them out one-by-one
    (7:50) Example

    8:28 Create Linked Pages
    Essentially all we have in the final Command Centre is a page of headings and links to either pages or databases.
    Usually, you are linking to pages because dashboards are pages with collections of various types of content.
    (9:25) Turn the subheading you want to work on into a page.

    9:50 Create Linked Databases
    Turn the subheading into a page, open it and then select 'Database' from the bottom menu on the page.
    When you create Pages and Databases in a page like this, they are embedded within this 'Command Centre' Page, which may or may not be what you want in the end.

    10:36 Organize Sidebar
    August prefers to have links to pages and databases which are organized/housed elsewhere in the system on his dashboards.
    The organizational system of dashboards, pillars, pipelines and vaults exists on the sidebar and pages are grouped into each of those.
    (11:35) Example 'Daily tracking' database is something that directly supports the pillars, so that is where he would house it while linking it back to the Command Centre dashboard.
    (12:00) Links are created to those organized pages/databases after they have been organized.
    The key to remember is that there is only one place where a page/database is housed but you can create a link to them from anywhere.

    14:47 Toggles
    Using keyboard shortcuts and commands is highly recommended, Notion's help centre has a list for you to pick and choose your favourites.
    Create a toggle on your command centre to house them.
    Type '/toggle' and you will create a toggle list.
    Open the toggle and you can paste anything you want in there.
    Drag into position using the indicators
    Link to keyboard shortcuts page:
    www.notion.so/Learn-the-shortcuts-66e28cec810548c3a4061513126766b0
    Notions help wiki has a dedicated page for every single one of these functions (toggle, pages, databases, linking etc.) it's really clear and in-depth.

    Create your dashboard with organizational headings and sub-headings specific to your needs.
    The next video will briefly cover installing a weather widget.
    The video after that will take an in-depth look at constructing a task database.

    It is easy to just do small experiments when uncertain. I just now did some and linked to (a page containing) them from my study-notes for this video. For example I discovered that the "page/sheet" icon of an internal (to page) link gets replaced when you give that page it's own icon. In some ways that is a disadvantage - a reduction in displayed information about link-type. Would be handy if Notion had a "reverse engineering" or "system maintenance" mode where link-type information was displayed regardless.

      August Bradley : Notion Productivity I am interested in advanced handle of numbers. i would like to replicate the dynamic tables of Excel here in Notion to group the information by rows and columns like I want. I can do it currently with several tables but I don’t know if it is the method more efficient. Thanks for all.

    • @augustbradley
      @augustbradley  4 года назад +1

      @@BorcoECD Good points Paco. Many people describe Notion as having spreadsheet functionality, but that is not really correct. Notion has database tables, not spreadsheets. Spreadsheets hold fixed positional relationship across rows, databases do not. Spreadsheets can form formulas across rows and columns, database tables are extremely limited in this regard. Notion does a fantastic job of replacing much of what I used to use Google Docs for, but it does not replace Google Sheets or Excel. Spreadsheet functionality is not really part of Notion, except in extremely limited ways. However, you could potentially embed Google Sheets spreadsheets or charts in Notion. But for real spreadsheet work, I'd stick with a spreadsheet application.

    I have watched almost all your videos! Thank you so much for all your incredible insight and ideas. I do have some questions about how you organize everything together. On another video we create an alignment zone, but I don't see where you store that on the right? Is it it's own page, is it nested into the Dashboard, or somewhere else? I would really love another video on how and why it's organized the way it is, and then also a practical "day use." I know you have done a lot already, but this would be amazing! :)

      Awesome to hear that Joshua! Do you mean where I store it in the left-side navigation? Not sure what yo mean by "on the right". The new video gives a glimpse into this (ruclips.net/video/8iL1kJj1JkI/видео.html ), but I will be doing a more detailed video on this -- it's based on the Pillars, Pipelines & Vaults organizational methodology I am presenting. Pipelines are databases with action-oriented processes such as tasks, projects, goals. Vaults are stored information like books, media ideas., people/contacts. Pillars are lofty visions/aspirations and key structures of your life. Here is a snapshot of what;s in each folder: a.cl.ly/04uPvpxl

    • @augustbradley
      @augustbradley  4 года назад +1

      Thank! In the video do you see where I show how to grab and drag it to the far right end to get the vertical line indicator? If you can put them side by side and they are too squished, make sure your window on your monitor is full width, Not sure what monitor you're using, but a very small one might be too tight -- in which case you can make two rows with two columns each instead of one row with four columns. Hope that helps.

    August, I've been checking the entire playlist, going back and forth, slowly building it out from the ground up. I'm now encountering an issue/topic that was way too specific for you to address in your public video series, although I'm sure there would be a large and growing demand for it out there. I'm talking about stocks/fx trading, and how to incorporate cleanly, in your system, a trading journal & trading plan. I'm currently using Evernote & Excel, like probably half of the retail traders out there. My current plan to bring it over to Notion consists of making a Trading dashboard (on the Command Center), which would combine a trade database (located in.. pipelines?), maybe a calendar as well, a key summary of the trading plan, etc. Maybe making it an ongoing project as well, with goals per quarter. I wish I could pick your brain, to be honest!
    Is this a topic you are familiar with or that you've covered with clients in the past? Would you ever consider making a video about it, or is too specific? And thanks again for sharing all this content!

    I'm really loving all you're sharing, August, and I echo all the expressions of Kudos & Big Gratitude! If I can get this set up and functional, it will be a game-changer for me, and a dream come true. I'm stuck on what seems to be a very simple procedure in your video. I've created the 4 columns on my dashboard - Focus, Growth, Biz & Home/Life, and the organization categories on the left menu bar - Dashboards, Pillars, Pipelines & Vaults. I created pages for Daily Action Zone and Daily Tracking, etc., and moved those under Pillars on the left. Where I get stuck is in creating a link to that page on the dashboard. After typing in 'link to page', the only pages that come up are the top-level pages. I see the Pillars page, but not the pages I put under that. What am I missing? I'm going to keep going just building out my dashboard without worrying about the organizational structure on the left for now, but I want to solve that. Thanks for any help you can give!

    • @olof9801
      @olof9801 4 года назад

      I get the same issue, but you can solve it by letting those pages be top-level when you add them as links, and then afterwards you can put them down to second-level again. For databases the same thing doesn't work as well, as it seems to generate a mini view of the db inside the command center as a result.

    Surprised there are no distinguishing icons for page/database objects (having no icons of their own), but I guess databases cannot exist outside of pages, so every database is ultimately contained in a page (correct?). I'd call a page containing only a (page-filling) database a database-page in that case. Making my own terms up - of course I haven't read the manual yet ! I notice that some people (eg August) create their own icons to distinguish database-pages or even different use-intentions of different databases (like relatively static or dynamic). The specialised icon approach seems like a helpful form of self explanation/documentation, both for the beginner and the overwhelmed. A work-around really - maybe in lieu of that "maintenance mode" suggestion I made in another comment.

    What a great demo - certainly looking forward to the next one in the series. I have found that link to a database on a page shows the actual database content and clutters the view and sort of defeats the intent of having a clean dashboard type layout. Not sure if this is a notion app on apple OSX thing only..

    • @augustbradley
      @augustbradley  4 года назад

      Thanks Ali! That's correct about linked databases. I was describing linking to a database, not the "linked database" that functions as an embedded database in the page. The demonstration in the video shows how to link to a database (and create that database) so that it keeps the clean uncluttered dashboard. Of course, in other instances it's valuable to embed a "linked database" directly into the page (I'll be showing many of these instances in upcoming videos). Depends on the intent of the page.

    First, thank you very much for this series of videos. Really incredible, and incredibly kind to offer them for free. My question (and apologies if it is literally answered in this video--I'm slowly working my way through them): Having used some form of GTD for some time now, I'm used to employing a general "Inbox"--a quick dumping ground for every thought/Task that might come my way. Does this system incorporate something like that? If you're out and about, say, and you have something you want to quickly capture, do you take the time to add it to the Master Task Database right away, or something different. Many thanks again.

    • @augustbradley
      @augustbradley  4 года назад +2

      Hi, that's addressed in the second part of this video: ruclips.net/video/1Sk1TzHL2dw/видео.html Quick answer, you can certainly do that and it's easy to set up in Notion (just make an Inbox database, as discussed in the video link). But I personally don't like that approach because the extra hassle of processing the Inbox all the time is a chore I like to eliminate by just taking an extra two seconds to enter it in the proper destination at the outset. But each individual can make their own choice on that. If adding an inbox, I'd putt access to it at the top of the Action Zone Dashboard.
