not sure but you look young. You have picked a great song. this song always sends many emotions through me, hope, sadness, love, joy... I hope you keep listening to this as you get older and feel how the song means more as you get older!
Manfred Mann's earth band is one of the most underrated classic rock bands ever. This song is just another example, and one of my favorites. Don't get better than this, folks
@@sandyquilty3138 The album version is the best, imo, I've heard several versions including one's that look like album versions on RUclips that aren't. The elements that were added, like backing vocals, a vocal intro and shoddy synth solo ruined an otherwise perfect original recording. For that matter, the entire album Chance is truly an unprecedented musical accomplishment and ushered in a sound that defined much of what bands for the rest of the 80s had to strive to approximate, thanks, I believe, much to the hard work of producer Trevor Rabin. As far as I can tell, no other Manfred Mann album comes even close to what this album achieved artistically.
Seems like I have heard that at the mall recently, in a cool store. lol This was my favorite song when I was a teenager. Well, along with Hold on Hold Out by Jackson Brown.
I worked on the river boats in the 70's-80's.There is a lock and dam in Bellvue Iowa.Everytime we would come down to make the lock,we would sing this song as we approached the lock wall.Ha.Folks thought we were strange. We just liked a great song.
Manfred Man and Chris Thompson are absolutely amazing. His vocals are incredible. Their interpretation of other songwriter's songs are perfect. Chris Thompson is a really nice bloke, too!
I was 15 when I heard this on my am transitor radio on a Chicago radio station WLS, and it was just once in a while I caught it playing while laying in bed on a school night....ahhh memories, 40 years later still gives me chills when I listen to it, love it!
Dr Hook & The medicine show they are underrated but only have a few hits which were phenomenal I love everything about them they're the gods behind the gods
Chance is one of the greatest albums of all time. So few people have listened to it though. I've worn out two vinyl copies over the years. It's amazing front to back without a single lame track. A brilliant masterpiece. Get yourself a copy and thank me later .
i have listened to the album a little while ago, and i really like it. I've known the band for a few years, and i was at some point still hearing new stuff from them. its my favorite album of all time
I flew to Germany with my daughter a few years a go to see them live . I think the live version of I came for you is fantastic , but the studio version has it for me. Crisper.
I am now 54y old, and MMEB has been one of my favourites since my childhood. They are simply great, but without Chris Thompson they are not the same as in their best years.
Manfred Mann gives this song the type of energy and intensity it truly deserves. Bruce's version as great as it is to monotone and he uses no inflection in his voice. great song non the less.
WOW! this song is a true rock classic, will never forget the night i heard it, on a rock radio station called KSLQ, i miss those days, CLASSIC ROCK FOREVER!!!!!
A beautiful cover, superior musically in my opinion to Springsteen's original. The range of emotions addressed by the song really come out here, making for such a touching and memorable experience.
Какие классные клавишные! Со своеобразной тональностью! Голос вокалиста тоже замечательный! И сама песня шедевр! Слушаю с 1983 года и не надоедает! Первая величина искусства!
One last comment. First listen to the song. Then listen to the song concentrating on the backup vocalist that comes into the song. The song is amazing.
I am a huge Bruce Springsteen fan but this is from his first album when he was trying to make it.Manfred mann capture this song so great.I believe Bruce is so proud of this version.
In point of fact, springsteen hated it because it was better than his original... and was the 2nd time Mm did him better. Blinded By The Light was another springsteen song that MM did before this one... springsteen's version STUNK ON ICE, and MM just redid it and hit it right out of the park. Springsteen really has no love for MM as a result.
@@ericlarson6390 ... AND if I may add, Spirit In The Night. I have been a Springsteen and E Streeter supporter since 1974. Greetings, & The Wild, were awesome albums in their own right, I still play them and there are no skips. (Older people will understand) .
This entire time period was great for the band, disco was gone, the written word in music became important again. Hook lines keyboards synth, buth the best part was the writing. The 80s music was and still is so important. s
I wanted to buy the album this song was on back in the early 90's but I couldn't buy it!!! I finally found it on an import cd!!! paid $25 for the cd just to get this song!!!!
The whole rest of the CD is awesome. I'm partial to Stranded and All Through The 80's. Give it another listen or three. Also listen to their later song Runner. That might have been their last song I liked.
I have been able to listen to this piece of music over and over again for 40 years. And the keyboard touch still sends shivers down my spine. There must be something about it ;-)
It was a different time, y`know. I don`t know what it was like in the US and Canada at the time, but in Western Europe in the years 1979-1981, four or five songs by Manfred Mann`s Earth Band, including this one, *dominated* the airways.
The Tampa Bay Rays baseball team use that famous piano rift part of this song coming back from commercial breaks between innings sometimes. Their late announcer who tragically and suddenly passed right before this season started (2023), had a hand Im sure in it being one of the "bumper" songs (coming back from commercial). And oh by the way, Rays are in first right now.
This be called late 70's decade 'Party', with the greatest keyboard man Manfred Mann, reachin' the "British Pop" 'perfection', along with Bram Tchaikovsky's "Girl of my dreams" debut, both are undisputed the "British Pop" 'Zenith'. Thanks Manfred Mann.
I wonder what its like to understand all the lyrics from the first listening? :) I love the music that told stories. Never shall the 21st century truly own me
Blinded by the light always overshadowed this song, but I always liked this one better. A true Rock classic that never got the fame it deserves!
💯
Just learned today that this is also a Springsteen cover, though I only knew it by a third band's version
Yes it did! Without Bruce Springsteen they would only one hit! But it's the only cover they do I like it better than the Boss!
It was huge in my market.
Couldn't agree more!
Never thought I would see this after all these years.😊
Had this song stuck in my head at 2am and couldn't shake it listened a half dozen times today to it one of the absolute favorites of mine
This is my favorite song of all time. I have never grown tired of listening to it.
not sure but you look young. You have picked a great song. this song always sends many emotions through me, hope, sadness, love, joy... I hope you keep listening to this as you get older and feel how the song means more as you get older!
Me too no matter how many times I hear it I get chills
Chris Thompson at his best!
One of my favorites also.
I can only say this....its the one song that i wish would never end
Manfred Mann's earth band is one of the most underrated classic rock bands ever. This song is just another example, and one of my favorites. Don't get better than this, folks

Почему недооцененная!? Со школы слушаю,люблю и помню!
I llke them but all their best stuff is other peoples music. Cant be the best under those conditions.
Haven't heard this on the radio since the 90s and now it's being played like it's 1981 all over again.
Seems like I have heard that at the mall recently, in a cool store. lol This was my favorite song when I was a teenager. Well, along with Hold on Hold Out by Jackson Brown.
Just haunting. That piano part just sends shivers down my spine
Well said
can't say how much this is a favourite of mine

Reminds me of roller skating Friday nights70s/80s. Great times!!!
Yes! 😅
Went to Play Land in Austin almost every Friday.
Manfred was a class act in the fact he didn't feel the need for the Spot Light. He just made music and a lot of hits for decades.
He wasn’t blinded by it! 👏🤘
Sooooo good. Loved it then. Love it now at 65. An beyond
59 here. Same.
Lead Singers enthusiasm is great!
Manfred Man and Chris Thompson are absolutely amazing. His vocals are incredible. Their interpretation of other songwriter's songs are perfect. Chris Thompson is a really nice bloke, too!
Kathie Myrenaes Well said Kathie
Yes he is! Met him with Alan Parsons! Great voice and super humble man!
He's so good you can't even understand how good he is...

The big 89 Brother !
I'm a bit older and remember when WLS and WCFL battled it out and when WLUP first started not to mention WXRT which is still going strong today.
I was 19 - 890 ruled!
Best station ever, growing up listening to WLS inspired me to go into radio. (Side note, found some "Animal Stories" on RUclips)
Uncle Lar and Little Snot Nose Tommy. I loved WLS
Timeless Masterpiece - Thank you for this banger!! 😃
I’ll always respect Mann’s covers for how different they are while still keeping some of the original
This tune brings back so many memories from the 80s!
In 1986 or 87 a dormmate turned me on to the Chance album. I've been in love with it ever since. Thank you, Jonathon.
Great song. I miss music like this but I'm glad that I was around in the 80's to hear this while it was on the radio. Good Stuff!
I saw them in concert in Germany five times and have every album they recorded. My favorite band of all time.
How cool are you ,,,wow . I went this alot my my 8 track tape player in 1981it gave me memories of days gone by.... The. 70 era . Like
Dr Hook & The medicine show they are underrated but only have a few hits which were phenomenal I love everything about them they're the gods behind the gods
Gives me goosebumps everytime I hear it. The woman singing in the background is Shona Laing.
Chris thompson great voice
I remember this song fondly, it reminds me of my older sister, Tammy who passed away on Christmas day of 2017. Rest in Peace.😞 I just want to cry😢
Sorry for your loss brother
Sorry for your/our loss.

Two of Bruce’s best songs.
The best intro ever!!!
Chris Thompson has such a great voice
Great show yesterday in the Netherlands. Very good
Still rocks may 25 2020👍

Great tune! I haven’t heard this song since I was in high school in ‘82. Brings back good memories
Haven't heard this in years! Thank you for posting it!
I can still remember the first time I heard this on the radio in the early 80s....40 years later I still shiver from the lyrics...
Thank you, Karen Marie Moning for reminding me of this gem...gave me goosebumps.
Under rated band. Lots of talent with these guys. Always liked them
Bruce is awesome! But the punch and the vocal + ++ m.m.e.b delivers in this version is just beyond awesome :)

What a voice he has. What is it about Manfred Mann that they take Bruce's songs and make them 10x's better ?.
I haven't heard this one in forever! Thank you for posting it!
This album is in my opinion “the beginning of the “end” of the great Manfred manns earth band.
sadly yes at least for me. as i remember chris was about to leave the band. i don't know any background
What an epic song. I've loved this since I was young.

What a great musician(Manfredd Mann) from South Africa
