They've said before they're a band who doesn't care about having to bring a new sound each time and they create songs to be played live not for albums really. Everyone's entitled to their opinion of course, I don't want anyone to misinterpret my comment. This was a great review
If you liked The Ride you will most likely enjoy this album at least a little bit. I actually really like a lot of the songs that Jon wasn’t a fan of. Side note: don’t let someone else’s opinions of anything change your opinion on something. Although I don’t completely agree with all your points, great review as always!

Got to make sure I'm not so influenced by other's opinions lol... most music is all subjective at the end of the day!
Although i completely understand and agree with the negatives that people have with the band i just can't help but love pretty much every song by catfish. I just like their sound a lot even if sometimes their songs sound similar
After listening every single tune on and on, i believe the songs are differnt but with the same vibe, wich is what i love about them, to some people it might be "their songs sound the same"
They don’t need to change, I like that, van has always said they have 1 style and love that style and feel like they don’t need to change, not every artist has to change, each album is different, yet so similar it’s what they’re built on
Catfish are probably my favorite band, but I definitely agree about this untapped potential. That being said they write songs with the intention of how they will go over live, which tends to mean the same formula and the same repetitiveness and ya know what? It works incredibly well for a live setting because of the extra guitar solos, added lines, etc., but for a studio recording you're just left wanting more creativity and change
Well, I don't know. The Balcony was fucking amazing and still I love every song on that album. The Ride was kinda worse, but after some listens still good. Now, I listened The Balance. Some songs are good. (Longshot, Flactuate, Basically and Overlap), but I can't say: "Hey, it's awesome. I've never heard such a thing!" The Balance is not a bad album, really not, but I want to hear something new or something old. (Really.) The Balcony was energic, catchy. I don't have these feeling from a new record. Catfish And The Bottlemen have potential to be a very good rock band, but now I am dissapointed from this one. They killing it in a bad way. I just want them to get back to the roots. Maybe i'm just pesimistic, so I try to listen it again and then I throw edit here.
I feel like all of their songs sound 10x better live, and that's because they write these with playing live as the main reason. Fluctuate and Sidetrack sound so much better live, more life to them and more reason to feel something
Originally I feel like the balance was not that good other than a few tracks , but over time it’s grown on me as too how much they’ve improved on the ride. The balcony was an album perfected over 7 years , and I feel like the balance is the step in the right direction to moving towards a slight change in sound. I’m just excited that they’re at least considering changing their sound up a bit
I think their biggest strength lies in their live shows, not sure what it's like elsewhere but here in the UK the gigs seem pretty mad - definitely on my to see list

It definitely does, I was like WTF is this! Why is there an intermission but now I’ve been playing the album non stop. Love it. Current favourite: Overlap
i really don’t dislike a single song on this album, or any catfish song for that matter, and in my opinion Intermission is a really underrated song, i know it doesn’t have much to offer but i love the riff and playing it acoustic sounds really nice, it’s worth learning if you play acoustic. my personal wish is that they’d make an album with the musical style of Tyrants- more unhinged, less structured, darker in tone, super intense to listen to- just all around my favorite song by them, and i always wished it was longer. imagine a whole album sounding like that
I completely agree with all the points you raised. I have to say The Balance is their first album that I love every song on the album. And after the ride I didn’t think that would happen since I only liked 7 and Red. I liked almost every song on the balcony expect for the slow song (I forget the name because I skip it every time). I think they’re just getting started
More I hear the songs the more they do sound different and dam there is not 1 bad song. way better than the ride. Gonna keep coming back to this album for sure
9/10 for what I expect form Catfish. Bondy delivers brilliant guitar lines from start to finish, brilliantly relatable lyrics as always form Van McCann, bass is good and really stands out in certain tracks. Bob’s drumming seems to evolve from album to album is is delicately entwined into the songs rather than sticking out like a sore thumb. Almost a year later and I still play the album a few times a week, every time I pick up my guitar I run through a few tracks from the Balance (Longshot, basically, overlap, encore) and have an absolute blast
very nice video man! i appreciate ur opinion but my opinion on this album is, outta all 3 it is my least favourite. it’s a good album but the ride only has 1 song i dislike (heathrow) but the rest of the ride is INCREDIBLE and i like everything on the balcony. i don’t think catfish need to evolve, i get why people find it frustrating but if you like them you’ll like all of theirs. the balance has some great standout songs, ie longshot, coincide, conversation, mission, but i feel some of the tracks on it are a bit like, yeh i like it but it doesn’t give me the same feeling as the less important tracks on the other 2 albums do.
Dear Jon, I was thinking about song structure and i was wondering, what do songs need to have in order to have "deep" lyrics? Is it just problems, or about a relationship or something not related to the two at all and completely unique?
This album put The Ride in its grave, but The Balcony will always hold a special place in my heart. I love all of their records and they are my favorite band! I definitely do believe that they are at the forefront of guitar driven rock music. It's been really cool to grow with their music and I know this album is gonna take them to even bigger places! I may not agree with this review in particular but I do enjoy what you have to say. You should definitely spend some more time with this record though. also I love that I'm in the jimmy Kimmel snippet you put in here haha!
I respect your critical viewpoint on this one, but the thing you gotta understand is that bands like catfish put their heart and soul into their music to such an extent as to keep a huge fan base satisfied, even with a very consistent and unevolving sound. Even though they may not have the capacity to be the mainstream rock saviors that they're made out to be, they at least deeply resonate with a large amount of human beings, and I think that with any kind of art, especially bands, that should be a quantifiable thing deserving of praise.
One thing that I don’t understand is that he says that some of cat bs tracks are boring and not evolved but they continue to sell out arenas and get single on the charts and everyone in the Uk and Us love them live, of course they sound similar it’s the same 4 minds working together but what u need to understand is that that’s what we love about them. You say they are not memorable but now whenever people hear them they throw their arms in the air and say ‘this is classic catfish’, what more can u want
I’ve loved catfish for years and I buy every record and support and I feel Ill buy more to come but I totally agree in terms of style If they don’t change up for the next record I feel it’s going to be very samey and start to get old very quick Good review I love the album btw
One the one hand I do understand where you come from... the lyrics are still related to the same subject, and the evolution and structures of the songs with calm moments (I know it doesn’t make sense) have always been their thing and they do it so well... but I really have to admit that I’m extremely surprised if not a bit disappointed by the critics, for to me this album really is different. The guitare is much more upfront rather than the bass line so much that it seems as the guitare is leading the song and it really stood out to me right from the start. To me this album isn’t the best, but it is différent from the Balcony or the Ride, in a more modern way. I do see the links between certain songs such as 7/twice and mission/conversation but as a whole once you listen to it you start putting more attention to small things that totally different from both previous albums that’s why i was a bit disappointed but then again maybe I’m biased
I thought it was solid through and through. Side track on is where the album comes a live for me. This album seems the most sincere for me and musically it’s new but still them. I think they like their sound and this to me is a step out and is their best album for me. I also like that it’s shorter. Vans vocal choices are way different on this which I think evokes more and the bass lines are way more interesting (finally) for once. Bondy’s tones on this are way better and I’m enjoying him kinda improvising on this album. Idk I think it’s a lot of growth and enjoy the production moreso on this album. I think it’s more cinematic. They do a great job on sequencing. it sounds new and fresh imo
Good review, don't agree with your opinion on mission though. The pace change for the chorus and the catchy melody are awesome, it's been in my head all day! One of the best songs on the album and I think it could've made a single.
I find some of their lyrics a little stale at this point. The singles all rock (except conversation) but I feel a lot of the album is just kinda like the same as stuff that’s done better before.
I quite like catfish... however. I got into in 2017 and haven't listened to either of their other 2 albums front to back again since then. They get a lot of shuffle play for me but never get a full album play. Same again here, more songs for the shuffle. I feel, because of how similar the sound is, there's not too much difference weather you play their albums or shuffle them. Again, I do actually really like this band, they just need to evolve. Also, can their next producer make the guitars just a tiny bit louder, consistent problem I have with them.
I think that the first seven tracks on the album are good. The singles are fantastic and I personally like conversation and sidetrack even though I do see its a lull in the album. I just think not as big as you said. Encore and Basically pick up the slack, but I totally agree with you that the album tails off. The last four songs are very hard to get into. This definitely sounds like a Catfish album, and I don't think thats such a bad thing. Saying that, they definitely need to innovate for their next album.
I still don't have an opinion since I've just heard it for the first time. Nothing really impressive, fluctuate remains as my favourite song. I'll give it another listen and see if anything changes. Great review!
I agree with most of what you said. I guess for me The Balcony has set the bar really high so the following two albums are not really that super mind-blowingly amazing. I do like all their albums, some songs are bangers, but the first album is just straight fire for me. Love every single song.
Encore it’s the best track on the album, but yeah I can defo see how they’re a bit stagnant in evolving and seeing their potential really hurts bc from The Balcony all the way to The Balance could be just one album. But let’s see what happens, this was also the case with bands like Oasis and The Beatles where through their first works they kept it a bit safe. But I can definitely see some improvement and a slight change in a direction of experimentation and bettering themselves
right jon i have the same feeling with you. this album has some great tunes , longshots fluctuate, 2all, encore are good songs but combine to them with the rest of the album.. it sounds kinda disappointing this record is just another "previous album" , I appreciate their music but I was expecting something "fresh" from them :/
This was leagues above their other records imho, only one they have that doesnt have any soulless indie filler on it. Every track bangs. Yeah, they’re all the same but they’re also all good so i’ll take it over the other 2 albums any day
I loved the balcony , but after that most of the later songs just seemed to be following formula and being much less exciting. And I really want them to improve mannnn
not surprised that the kinda stuck with the same sound. although you may not like soundtrack maybe its better live I know when saw it live was soo badass idk maybe it was the hype from the crowd that made me like it haha anyways enjoyed the review and looking forward to the album still :)
I used to be a huge fan, love their general sound but all the songs sound the same :/ Although I mostly started to like them a little bit less because they cancelled their Hamburg show back in 2015 and haven’t come back here since, it’s been 4 years... They keep doing US shows and their Europe tour consists of like 5 dates, I just don’t get it
Totally agree with your review. Can't help but recognise they have committed to the same aesthetic and sound for years and it's so sad. I was rooting for them since 2015 😔✊🏻
I was waiting for this album for two years. I was really in to them back in 2017 and I loved songs like Tyrants, Twice, Outside, Soundcheck, 7, Pacifier and Homesick. But already back then I hoped for them to do something different, not change in a big way but I always had a hard time knowing which album the songs belonged to because they sounded so similar. Then Longshot came and I was disappointed. It didn't have than CATB feel to it and the production was not fitting them at all. As you said Vans vocals we're backed down to clean things up and that was the worst idea ever for this band. I love his raspy vocals cause I always felt like Van has such a passion for what he is singing, but on this record it all feels dead and dry. The songs feel unpolished and do not live up to any standard they've had previously. And it really sucks cause I do love them. But I wont be coming back to this album, the songs just don't do it for me.. Sidetrack do have it's moment, the bas line during the second verse is fucking amazing but then the chorus comes and it's such a let down. 2 out of 5.
The Balcony was definitely their best. However they are just indie filler, pumping out identical albums with zero progressiveness. Obviously The Balance has a lot of great songs (Fluctuate is not one of them though) but CATB need to start changing if they want to avoid running out of steam.
I don’t react I review ☺️ But I already did I mini-review of The Balcony within my review of The Ride. Check that one out it’s linked in the outro screen.

I agree with most of what you said. I guess for me The Balcony has set the bar really high so the following two albums are not really that super mind-blowingly amazing. I do like all their albums, some songs are bangers, but the first album is just straight fire for me. Love every single song.
jon, what is your favorite song by catb?
Cocoon
ARTV good choice
Encore it’s the best track on the album, but yeah I can defo see how they’re a bit stagnant in evolving and seeing their potential really hurts bc from The Balcony all the way to The Balance could be just one album. But let’s see what happens, this was also the case with bands like Oasis and The Beatles where through their first works they kept it a bit safe. But I can definitely see some improvement and a slight change in a direction of experimentation and bettering themselves
Hey Jon, Taylor Swift just released her new single w/ Brendon Urie. Why don't you review it?
right jon i have the same feeling with you. this album has some great tunes , longshots fluctuate, 2all, encore are good songs but combine to them with the rest of the album.. it sounds kinda disappointing this record is just another "previous album" , I appreciate their music but I was expecting something "fresh" from them :/
Disagree on overlap, personally really like it, would overall say 3/5 is about right
This was leagues above their other records imho, only one they have that doesnt have any soulless indie filler on it. Every track bangs. Yeah, they’re all the same but they’re also all good so i’ll take it over the other 2 albums any day
5:00 it's 'Sidetrack' not 'Sideline'
Wallows oops
Please review MARINA Love + Fear our now, she deserves a review and I would like to hear your thoughts! Thanks 💕
Fluctuate, sidetrack, and encore best songs on the album
White Rose encore is so good
Favorite band of all time. I am obsessed with them. They also do a great live show
I loved the balcony , but after that most of the later songs just seemed to be following formula and being much less exciting. And I really want them to improve mannnn
How long did you listen to it?
Two and a half days. I get advance copies of albums for review sometimes if I request them from the label/team
I go back and listen to every song on their first album and second...
not surprised that the kinda stuck with the same sound. although you may not like soundtrack maybe its better live I know when saw it live was soo badass idk maybe it was the hype from the crowd that made me like it haha anyways enjoyed the review and looking forward to the album still :)
After hearing more than a couple of times, I started to enjoy it so much. Great band.
Please, Review of Titanic Rising by Weyes Blood. You won't regret.
Not reviewing, but I have heard it :)
@@artvjon so, what do u think?
I used to be a huge fan, love their general sound but all the songs sound the same :/ Although I mostly started to like them a little bit less because they cancelled their Hamburg show back in 2015 and haven’t come back here since, it’s been 4 years... They keep doing US shows and their Europe tour consists of like 5 dates, I just don’t get it
What up ARTV boi
Yooooo
ARTV YOU ACTUALLY RESPONDED IM FINNA DIE
So many people have said that they feel like most of these songs are just recycled tunes from The Ride
Totally agree with your review. Can't help but recognise they have committed to the same aesthetic and sound for years and it's so sad. I was rooting for them since 2015 😔✊🏻
Never heard about this band, doesn't look like I missed anything. Oh well, looking forward to your The Dammed Things review)
2 out of 5.
I WANT A FULL LENGTH ACOUSTIC TRACK , NOT A 1 MINUTE CRAP
Basically is the best track
Give Local Natives-Violet Street a review
Catfish and the Bottlemen need to be more experimental. There are too many songs that sound alike.
Ah crap,I had high hopes for this album
overlap is my fav from the balance
bullshit, they have done a esquisit job on the album, and this is my first time hearing about the bamd
Catfish and the Bottlemen is one of the blandest and uninteresting Indie Rock Band I've ever heard
they started out really strong but the two follow up albums are just following the exact same formula and not giving us anything new or different
@@onekidneystan4330 I agree
John Oregon I mean, you are probably right but have you ever seen one of their live performances? They are just on another level
@@lucreziapellanda9288 Never saw it, will check it out since you mentioned it
The Balcony was definitely their best. However they are just indie filler, pumping out identical albums with zero progressiveness. Obviously The Balance has a lot of great songs (Fluctuate is not one of them though) but CATB need to start changing if they want to avoid running out of steam.
Should react to the balcony
I don’t react I review ☺️
But I already did I mini-review of The Balcony within my review of The Ride. Check that one out it’s linked in the outro screen.
you need to listen to coincide again what?!?!?! thats meh to you?
I agree 3 out of 5
I thought it was really good
