  • In this video I go over a simple method for checking your Cummins N14 for an injector or an ecm issue. A miss in the engine is often an injector issue, but sometimes its a wiring or ecm issue. Don't just throw money away on the problem. There's a really easy way to narrow things down.
    Here's a pdf that can come in handy when checking the wiring and ecm. midwestecmrepair.com/files/919...

      Thanks a lot. And you’re exactly right. And I run into it a lot. People want the quick answer and you just got to slow down a little and go through the proper steps. Ultimately it saves tons of money and time. Really appreciate you pointing that out.

    I've looked at countless other videos on RUclips but yours is the only one that mentions the "noid" device. I have Ohms checked my injectors with multimeter, the wiring from injectors to N14 then from N14 to ECM for continuity and these tested to be working. I
    have an 05 cummins so my "N14" equivalent actually
    house wiring for 2 cylinders so I can't disconnect 1 cylinder
    at a time. I am going to get
    the Noid test set at O'Reilly
    and test the ECM and the
    wiring. I really appreciate your
    thorough explanation and
    method how to
    check all those things. Excellent video, Sir. 👍👍

    Thank you very much bud for all this awesome tests it has given me a new way to look at the electrical side of things.... I have continuity on my injector... Noid ligth test threw me off a bit because i got a mixed of strong strobes n low strobes and then it quit.... So I'm thinking Ecm but the seals on the pigtails are letting oil in the harness aint no telling how long thats been going on so im going to replace the pigtails and injector harness since i do have access to another Ecm if after i replace the harness then ill send the ecm to get it rebuilt

    You gained another subscriber, this was some really good info, I replaced all 6 had 2 of them bad, did my overhead sounds real nice, but I get this weird sound when pressing the throttle, I think I have a bad jake, or maybe air in the system, it develops after 10-15 min of running, any advices on what to check next would be greatly appreciated

    • @nedstephens
      @nedstephens  Год назад +1

      What sort of weird sound? If you think it’s the jakes you can test with the jakes off. Just remember to plug the jake oil ports if doing it with covers off. If it sounds like it’s lacking in power something might have gone together wrong and check over everything again. Or you could just have something going on in the engine after it warms up. Hard to say to be honest. Thanks a bunch.

      @@nedstephens I have to run it with the jakes off, its got tons of power, and it works good. Its just a quick miss when I accelerate. At idle it sounds great, I truly appreciate the response, I think I might have to take it to a shop, If that does not work, It also does not have the valves behind the ecm, Its bypassed straight to the pump bought it like that, dont know if that has something to do

    Where can I get a pin diagram for my N14 ECM, wiring harness? Thanks to this video’s excellent advice, I purchased a noid light kit, pretty cheap at Harbor Freight, and found my #4 injector has no power. I’d like to test it myself rather then a shop. I replaced the ECM 15,000 miles ago and sure hope it’s not that again. Thanks in advance for any help.

      Hey bud. Glad it’s helping. There’s a link in the description that takes you to a diagram. I think what you need is on the bottom of page 2. Then you can use the multimeter to check for broken wires. Good luck.

    Thx for the tips. Make sure that even though the paperclip may look like clean wire, it may have a clear coating on it. Would show as an open circuit.

    • @nedstephens
      @nedstephens  Год назад +1

      I would first check a fuel issue. The light test is for when you have a cylinder not working. The light helps narrow where to look. If you’re not getting anything at all then you’ll have to look at something different.

    I'm going to try and explain my N14 issue to the best I can.
    So as I turn my steering wheel to turn out the house my engine begins to want to stall or lose power or fuel. It does this every time I turn without being in gear. Also seems to happen when I'm turning to straighten to back up. It just started doing this last week. I've spoken to a few people/mechanics. I've had injector 1 disconnected and as it's being placed back in it shut off my truck. 2 days later it's a different injector that shuts off my truck. Some say it could be injector(s), wiring harness, speed sensor. To all I've spoken to have a confused look so I'm coming here to see if you may have come across this issue. I'm thinking it could be my injector(s) since it shut off my truck each time we disconnected them.
    Listening to this issue I'll be checking the injector plugs.

    • @andrewdrumfire8023
      @andrewdrumfire8023 Год назад +5

      First of all I'm not a mechanic but I do work on my own N14 for a little while now, a bad injector will not shut off the engine. What I'd do is I'd check the fuel system first. Get yourself some mechanical gauges and hook them up to your fuel ports (one for the pressure side and one for the vacuum side) and check the pressure/restriction in your fuel system. My advise to you is to invest in tools and service books so you can work on the motor yourself, you'll be amazed how much money you'll save in the long run.

    • @nedstephens

      Yeah I would avoid it. Depending on what the injector is doing you could cause other engine damage.

    Honest opinion. Is it worth buying a truck with a N14 with 125000 miles on it

  • @inspktr51

    So anyways, I just got the overhaul done on the N14, new heads, turbo, and all the stuff, recently during break in it jerked once like if it was running out of fuel for a second then it did it 3 times again days after while pulling a 34k lb load, we found it had a small leak on the hose that goes from the fuel pump to the T into the piping going into the engine, we replaced it and it run good yesterday while pulling 48k lbs twice. But after calling it a day while driving bobtail home it did it twice. Then I saw the pipe where we changed the braided fuel hose has another small leak. Do you think that’s what’s causing that problem or should we worry about something else.
    We also replaced the red fuel solenoid behind the fuel pump and we sparkled clean the ecm wires that connect to the batteries and all the cables and terminals.
    Thoughts? 🤔
    Engine runs smooth as a champ and pulls like a freight train and has a little over 1,000 miles now on the overhaul.
    Just that little problem.

    • @nedstephens
      @nedstephens  Год назад

      It does sound like a fuel issue. From what you said you probably repaired a return fuel line. I would also go over all the supply lines and make sure the filter is fresh.

      @@nedstephens found the problem about that random jerking. We never got a dash code but it was the cam position sensor. We took it out and it was cracked around the magnet causing it to move around with the vibration
