LARQ Self-Cleaning Bottle Review: 1 Year Later! (2021)

  • 1 year since I first unpacked and reviewed the LARQ bottle and bottle movement - the first smart-self-cleaning bottles said to purify 99.99% of bacteria - here's an updated follow-up after using since. These have since been renamed Bottle PureVis and Bottle Movement PureVis after LARQ launched the non-smart cleaning insulated bottles, but everything is still practically the same.
    The bigger, heavier Bottle edges it for me thanks to its double-wall insulation, especially in the blazing summer right now, but the more affordable, slimmer and lighter Bottle Movement is still a great daily driver.

    I get very annoyed with companies that try to sell their products with misleading information.
    The bottle (500ml PureVis) holds 500ml, but if you fill it with exactly that volume, you won't be able to put the cap on. And if you read the manual you will see the text "Fill with clear water up to the indicator line". And that line is about 10mm above the Larq logo on the bottle. Yes, the line that lies far below the bottleneck. So the volume you can fill the bottle and get it working is around 370ml (which is 26% less than the stated 500ml). They never tell any buyer that, so most users are probably using this bottle incorrectly...

    • @OneTechTraveller
      @OneTechTraveller  3 месяца назад

      yes sadly they should make it clearer with the actual usable volume since the design directly affects overall capacity. Sadly its probably to make it easier to market with rounded numbers and a technicality but would garner more respect with being transparent in what people actually get. Great bottles and effective tech, just better commication needed.

    How do you know if the LARQ bottle is in travel mode? I just got my LARQ bottle today and all the instruction said was to hold the button for 5 seconds but there are no symbols/indicator to show the travel lock is on

    • @OneTechTraveller
      @OneTechTraveller  2 года назад +5

      Hey Mimi, you're right there's no indicator or confirmation once travel lock is on (after holding for 5 seconds), they should do that. What you CAN do is press the button on the cap for normal cleaning mode. If the blue light doesn't turn on, it means travel lock is active (disables self-cleaning for storage, saves battery or cleaning when not in use etc).
      I haven't tried it since I don't turn travel lock, but it should help to know when lock is on or off.
      Hope that helps! KBA

    Thanks for your insight! I recently purchased the 25 oz Larq Bottle PureVis Original as I wanted the insulation. However, I am very nervous about the bottle getting dinged up. Have you tried putting the silicone sleeve from the 24 oz Movement on the 25 oz Original to see if it will fit? That would greatly help me as I really don't want to buy the neoprene travel sleeve

    • @OneTechTraveller

      Happy to help Aaron! The silicone as part of the kovement design definitely doesn't fit. The neoprene sleeve is quite a stretch to put on the movement too but it holds like glue 😅 you do need to wash it as it will get dirty but no biggie with your laundry.

    I think it doesn’t filter hard metals like a Britain’s filter for example. So would you say that you still taste a different when purifying tap water with the Larq?

    • @OneTechTraveller
      @OneTechTraveller  2 года назад +8

      That is correct these are portable bottles I can best describe as refining source water of contaminants and making water healthily drinkable for longer, preventing bacteria and ecoli build up. Water needs to be at least drinkable and it'll clean it up further. If youre out travelling it'll do a better job cleaning contaminants in natural sources than your basic bottles that don't.
      The LARQ pitcher has more advanced purifying filters that are 'said' to filter at a higher efficiacy and wider contaminants if you're looking for that kind of purity. Check it out on their website but I have no hands on experience with them.

    Is this bottle made to filter tap water? I'm leaving off to Bali in 2 weeks and thinking about buying a LARQ bottle. If i poor tap water in it (which can not be drank in Bali), will it be drink-able after filtering it?

    • @OneTechTraveller
      @OneTechTraveller  Год назад +2

      Hey 👋 so in my opinion it will definitely improve the quality of the water to make it more drinkable than a typical bottle (since they don't have any tech and can breed bacteria and viral growth if not cleaned adequately).
      The LARQ filtered bottle will remove physical contaminants before drinking including contaminants metals pesticides to really filter out the bad stuff from water sources. PureVis (this one) sterilises to kill bacteria and viruses, like when you boil water but more effective and efficient.
      In the case of tap water where there are no physical contaminants, the PureVis one will be the way to go. The filtered would suit better if the source may have physical bits (like outdoor water). For best performance, you can get the LARQ filtered bottle and add on the PureVis Cap for the best coverage and sanitation. Hope that helps

    • @OneTechTraveller
      @OneTechTraveller  2 года назад +8

      I've had it for a year and used a variety of normal stainless steel bottles or plastic bottles, the difference is in leaving water for a period of time. You'll notice the difference. The bottle itself will have a weird smell because of bacteria build up. You'd have to clean the bottle frequently and change the water if left. Water from my larq bottle developed no smell and the water tasted the same from when i first filled it up. That means the uvc light is preventing bacteria build up in that time.
      You can research about UVC light online if you're sceptical this is my experience. Depends on whether it suits your lifestyle usage

    What's the PPM reading on a TDS meter with these?

    • @OneTechTraveller
      @OneTechTraveller  2 года назад

      hey I reached out to LARQ who took some time to reply but I got their reply:
      "The LARQ Filters are designed to keep the beneficial minerals in your water and remove contaminants that have a negative health impact. TDS meters only measure the total amount of dissolved solids in parts per million or ppm. Some harmful contaminants can be dangerous in just parts per billion (ppb) or even parts per trillion (ppt). For example, lead, chromium-6, and arsenic are toxic at parts per billion concentration which the TDS meter cannot pick up. TDS meters are also a nonselective measurement and cannot differentiate among different ions. For example, you could have a high TDS meter reading but no harmful contaminants in your water. Some healthy minerals like potassium, magnesium, and calcium can actually cause your TDS meter to spike. For those reasons and more, we do not follow the TDS method. Our goal is to design filters that can be effective with the added benefit of having longer filter life (better for the environment), better flow rates, less prone to clogging, and overall better user experience compared to filters that target an arbitrary "zero" dissolved solid reading."

    A proper steel bottle where you pour out the liquid will be just as good if not better for 99% of users in the urban jungle. And if you traverse to remote areas (with contaminated water), you will be better of with a real filter contraption - you're not going to want to drink sterilised solids anyhow. Definitely not good for the gym. If you are actively working out, chances are you'll be in need of water or your pre-workout drink frequently and having to unscrew the top in order to take a drink and then screw it back on so that you don't spill your drink all over the gym floor isn't ideal in the gym.
    But for camping or hiking where you might find water fountains along the way...this is obviously a good solution drinking clean water.

Saves having to go to the fountain, keeps cold especially in hot weather and the screw top means it'll stay secure without any chance of it leaking or toppling over.
