- In this vlog, we travel to Cookham to check out potential winter mooring spots. We also take the time to sweep the chimney and do other important jobs in readiness for winter.
Julie is as busy as ever with exhibitions and art demonstrations, taking her all over the south of the country.

the feather art is amazing
It is stunning.
Thank you for the lovely video.
Our pleasure!
Yay 🎉that’s your signature tune forever now ❤️🏴
It seems it is, Janice
A couple of days after watching Mark whacking his head on the hatch I did the same on the doorway of my friend's boat! It wasn't as bad but hurt a lot and left a big, long bump! Mandi's paintings are beautiful; as well as yours also of course, Julie! 😊Also I didn't realise one of your lovely dogs was called Bertie too? They're gorgeous!
We noted that your dog is called Bertie too and he is a cutie. I've bumped my head several times but this was the worst. It bled like mad. Those feather paintings are stunning.
Your friend's art on feathers is incredible! I've never seen that done before.
It's such a unique art, Dorothy.
We heard the fireworks. The red kites have been a very successful 're-introduction, to leading to various claims of helping the them selves to picnics. Enjoyed seeing part of the river I am familiar with. Thanks.
Red kites are the most amazing birds. We love them
There's a rubberised paint, that will seal and protect your cover. It will then last the winter. Providing you don't collapse it. Good luck xxx
We were thinking of using blue shoe polish because it is waterproof.
@@WeirontheMove that would work well. Good luck 🤞 and keep up the great work 😘😘😘
I think we will have to do winter on the Thames one year - watching with interest x
We'll let you know how it goes, Shelagh. It could be great fun or a disaster
Good video
Thank you
You are brave going through Marlow lock again - I shuddered when you showed the approach from the bridge…
We've found the worst lock is Boulters at Maidenhead. It is quite ferocious
@@WeirontheMove my claim to fame was that I fell into Bray lock and as still wet by the time that I reached Boulters. Thankfully, the lock keeper at Bray called ahead and I had extra special care and help in Boulters Lock. I was single handed at the time.
Walked past a bloke who looked just like Mark on the foot path between Bourne End marina and the railway bridge , I was with my dog ( a whippet) just been to check my boat out , told the mrs I was sure it was you and flipping heck now I’ve seen this vlog I reckon it was so HELLO mark 👍
Hi Col, it was us. We were visiting friends up the path. We are wintering at Cookham this year, so we will see you around
Hi Julie The Magna Carta hotel boat you was admiring at 3.50 has a hot tub on the forepeak, Not many takers now .
Bit nippy this time of year, Ramsey
I agree that the feather art was unique and amazing. Poor Bert and Ernie with the fireworks. I wish I had the money to replace your cover. Take care and be well. Leigh
Bert and Ernie were really scared. The feather art is amazing.
So you've decided on the Thames for the winter, all I can sat id you're in a much better position to decide than me on the other side of the pond
I wish you all the luck in the world. At least you shouldn't be too far from things that a boat needs.
I'm a little late this week because of a girl called Fiona ,no not my fave BBC presenter Fiona Bruce but this girl was a vicious storm hundreds of thousands were left without power, houses washed into the sea and lots of other damage. We fortunately escaped without damage except, very strong winds a 5 inches of rain. Millions of trees were shorn of their leaves before we had the fall treat of colour..I was wondering if Julie's art shows go on through the winter. f so drive safely.
When I heard all the fireworks I wondered if you'd called in the Army to fight off all those hot air balloons!!
Happy cruising making thse excellent vlogs.
Cheers from Me and Canada.
Hi Ralph, it seems the storms are hitting you and the US bad this week. We are confident that we have made the right decision for winter. Stay safe during the storms
You need the Product called ELBOW GREASE ALL PURPOSE! IT WOULD WORK BRILLIANT FOR YOUR CANOPY!!
Oh! We've been using Manual Labour All purpose. Maybe we should swap?
Tip for chimney cleaning, use a floor mop, it's a tighter fit and cleans better😁
Thanks for that, Dave
Beautiful cruise. Loved the way the dogs were helping Mark with the fire. Not a pleasant job cleaning chimneys. Hope dogs ok after fireworks. Take care. Thanks for sharing.
The dogs weren't fans of the fireworks, that's for sure
Well, your chili’s look amazing, and your friends feather art is stunning! And I love how the boys were there giving Mark morale support as he cleaned the stove😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀
The boys were there to cause mischief, Tanya. The chilis are coming on really well
Thank you must be great going through the seasons.
It is, Helly
I did hear the bird sing😊. I worked at an interior decorating company in my early days and saw a painting done with one horse hair...it was amazing ‘horse and buggy’.
That sounds amazing, Shirley. There are some talented people out there
What a showcase of fall on the way! There is no rest for the wicked when you own and live on a narrow boat is there? Constant chores to keep you fit and all that walking for the car! Enjoyed another lovely episode on the Thames.
There's always chores when you live on a boat, Kathy
our dog hates fireworks as well
They get so scared
Another great video, brings back lots of good memories as a young boy back in the 70s being on my parent’s boat travelling up and down the Thames. Hope you’re staying on the river for winter.
We are staying on the river for winter, Jason
Keeping the canopy clean is always such a pain! We use clove oil, bio washing liquid mixed with water seems to do the trick and smells nice 😁 So are you guys braving the Thames for the winter? Kingston is nice to stay at towards Christmas 😁
We heard Kingston is nice. We are wintering at Cookham and we still plan to come and visit
I’ve seen the painting on feathers before here in Maine but it’s rare and takes quite the artist to carry it off. Remarkable.
They are incredible, Brenda. Such a talented lady
So are going to stay Thames this winter.. as other canals have water level issue...or the price of fuel
I find myself still frustrated that my original goal was live on canal boat..not having a working partner as Mark.., I have moved on to Northern Holland 2nd time this year try get Floating House boat Campi..leave in 2 weeks back to Friesland....Julie sorry not to meet up this Spring Art Show..but the South Coast by Bus went well Exeter to Ramsgate ..all local bus..happy to say..I encourage others give it go...very expensive and done on daily fare pass
Hi Pat, it was a shame we didn't meet. Sounds like your South coast trip was an adventure!
Thanks for taking us along on this cruise as it's one of my favourite places to be. The Barn Owl on the feathers looks fantastic, how are your 'minces' Mark as I've just had to have another Eylea injection just before my 65th birthday, the second of three. It's great to see that you two and the pups are doing well. Take care and all the best. Stevie
Hi Stevie, my eyes are okay although I suspect another batch of injections are coming soon.
As always, great vlog! 👍
Thanks, Charles
Hope the fireworks didn’t go on too long so the dogs could relax.
At least you had good weather to do your winter preparation jobs.
Those balloons are following you 😂 take care stay safe.
The weather's been glorious
That dreaded time of year when Mark practices his festive Mooney 😂🍻🍻
It's got to be Done, especially when you are packing a bike rack like mine
Thanks for a super video, as a young boy (11 - 16 We used to have holidays every September on a hire boat on the Thames, wooden boats then. You going from Henley to Bourne End brought back happy memories. That field at Cookham that had orange buoys around it and cattle in the field was were we moored several times to play football and walk the dog. At Hurley lock it moored up over night, we would walk over the wooden bridge to one of two pubs, if memory serves me right it was call the Sun but I am going back over fifty years ago. Only ever moored once at Marlow always very busy. Missed your normal introduction, are you trying out a new way of not just having a Spring clean of the hour but video presentation?
What great memories, David. We are still doing the intros but we didn't have time for this vlog
Happy sad times on the Thames with a happy tune Mark, thank you.. Love the foggy mornings and calm days. Big river too. Are you able to moor for longer times during winter? Xx. P🇳🇿
Hi Philip, there are no movement rules on the Thames, so we can stay for as long as we like
enjoyed your latest vlog and I particularly like the catchy music, can you please tell me what it is..
Keith and Carole..
Hi Keith, it's called Happy Mandolin. Glad you liked the vlog
From what you said think you do painting? Like to see....from USA. From state of Kansas
Hi Deanna, I do paint and feature my art in almost every vlog. My website link is in the description box
Good morning, a question. As you have traveled the Thames, could you tell me if it is possible to do the whole length in a barge with a wheelhouse please. I have a copy of your wide beam canal map, which is superb for width but bridges are a different kettle of fish. Thanking you for you input and help.
It is apart from Osney bridge near Oxford. It's a bit low
That is ridiculous the cost of a cover…unbelievable
It is expensive but they do last for 10 years
Wonderful wonderful . I like the feather painting. ""sent an email for both of you,,,."" subject,,, Movie ? from a follower." CCHHEERRSSSSS Dear M&J
I've read the email and am not sure we can help you with the movie title. We even googled it and drew a blank. Are you sure you didn't dream it?
Our pram hood is ok at the mo, but I don't understand why a new cover is so expensive. Would the original manufacturer have the patterns on file? My lad works at Parker Knoll and they make a complete sofa in an hour and a half.
Hi Simon, the maker has the pattern, but are only interested in selling us a new one
A little bit 'Down-Beat' in this video Chaps 😞 ..... Cheer UP! - Soon be Xmas!! .... AARRGGHH!!!!!!! 😰😨😱
Not sure what was downbeat about it, Pete? We promise we are cheerful
Is cleaning the burner something that should be done the last time it’s lit in spring? Or more normal to do at at start of the colder months?
Its should be done after last use, but we always do it before winter
the crack of doom......
Indeed!
Why didn't you just walk from Henley to Sonning 🤷♂
We thought the train could take the strain, and it only cost about 5 quid
