Homeless Teenagers Living On LA's Skid Row | Union Rescue Mission

  • We hope you will take a moment to watch the story of Michelle - the eldest of 5 children who lives with her mom and siblings at Union Rescue Mission.
Skid Row is no place for women and children. While it's safe inside the walls of the Mission, it's dangerous outside. That is why we work so hard to get them out as quickly as possible to safe places like Hope Gardens or our Project Restart locations.
As we near the end of our fiscal year, we hope you will consider giving a gift to help children like Michelle.

True, But that is the thing I'm busy going to work or a sidejob to make extra money to not be homeless. If I stopped and worried about everyone else's problems and didn't take care of my own first then I wouldn't be able to try and maybe help someone else a little bit.

Ever more the reason to think about the homeless because you know how easily you can end up being one. It's not people don't think it's they don't want to even entertain that thought as it then makes it too real a possibility. So instead they would rather be in denial then face the harsh reality.

In the 1970s , a wave of young liberals. Bill Clinton, a DEMOCRAT, among them, destroyed the populist Democratic Party they had inherited from the New Dealers of the 1930s. The contours of this ideological fight were complex, but the gist was: Before the 70s, the Democrats were suspicious of big business. They used anti-monopoly policies to fight oligarchy and financial manipulation. Creating competition in open markets, breaking up concentrations of private power, and protecting labor and farmer rights were understood as the essence of ensuring that our commercial society was democratic and protected from big money. The American Dream was destroyed gradually by the Democrats who also destroyed American Education by the creation of a leftist-liberal Federal Department Of Education.

" natural intelligence", I would say ethnicity "white skin" in America will give her a HUGE chance IF she makes correct decisions. Black and brown skinned, people especially those whose first language is not english have much less of an opportunity to improve on quality of life. If people keep voting Republican and corporate Democrat life will get much worse, but I digress.
Maybe one day Americans will wake up and realize it's the rich against the poor. Corporations do not love Humanity. tRump was born rich and hates the poor, Joe Biden is a puppet bought and paid for. also hates the poor. Oh there I go again...shutting down...5, 4, 3, 2, 1... .

It was a great experience and really enjoyed the staff. I was there back in 1996 to 1997. I thank God that I haven't gone through that situation as an adult and I am able to provide for my family. Instead of praying to nonexistent invisible people why don’t you support a political change in your country in which many people suffer these conditions while others have colossal amounts of money that they will never be able to spend not only in their life but for generations?
Jamie Dimon for example own mansions for a total of 237 rooms and 183 toilets FFS and probably has shitted in 8 or 9 of them at most.
Tax those people say 2 or 5% they wont even notice, not a dent will be made in their luxurious lifestyle, and help these people (an estimation of 80 billion USD could easily be collected this way, again without the super-rich even feeling it slightly...most probably feeling even better too).

I've been hospitalized twice and I got myself and my kids out off it I didn't sit around and keep having kids with someone who beat the shit out of me. There are ways out and plenty of help but you can't sit around and make excuses and sit around and expect someone to throw money into your lap. 6 months she has children that are old enough to stay home with the others no reason she shouldn't be working as hard as need be. It might not be ideal but sitting in a homeless shelter for months isn't either. These children are the ones who are paying for her bad decisions.

Conversely people that do not do good but make money are being rewarded with a high life and high recognition.

The city should have a few hundred half way houses for late teens through age 25 or27 to help them get jobs and finish their education . God requires us all to. Protect and help the young. and also parents with children Not skid row......idiots!....not skid row....not ever! And don't break up families and shove kids into the "system" if they can be cared for by parents by giving them housing and kindly loving help .....like human beings should. Children's services and social workers should not be viewed as threats to families but as ones who can help get into housing and get food and clothing and get legal help if the parents have debt or are ex-cons or are going through divorce and need counseling or reconciliation or help with a car or access to daycare or medical needs Every homeless person needs to get into a little warm safe place to live and have access to kind loving help with food and job finding and rehab when needed. Homeless people don't need to be beat up on to shape up and fly straight.....they are already down to being homeless and hungry and harsh treatment by police or governmental agencies does no good wbatsoever. They need help and love and resources or they will die out there.

Well, did you go? Please tell me you've done something. We've got a burgeoning homeless problem in New Zealand now, particularly in Christchurch after the 10,000+ quakes and bad government neo liberal bullshit resulted in people having nowhere to go. 7,000 and counting. Five years ago, maybe less than 100 males. Now 7000 living rough. We never had beggars, and now we do. I do what I can, particularly in the winter. School kids living in cars and all that implies. It's seriously fucked up.

With all respect the fact that u don't believe in prayer, does't mean that nobody should pray. There's no "magic man in the sky who'll 'always keep you safe'" obviously you don't read the Bible n I don't expect you do. If your life is going well the way you are, more power to you. As for me, and others who do believe in the power of prayer, we work hard and pray for guidance. I agree that all should take action, nevertheless I strongly believe prayer is our guidance to follow a straight path.

Sometimes, God allows us to go through circumstances we may not like. Many times these circumstances are allowed by God to show us or teach us something we would never otherwise learn if we hadn't gone through it. Sometimes He allows us to go through things so we can better relate to others who may be going through the same thing. Whatever the reason, you can trust that God allowed it...for a reason. Instead of dwelling on your "unfortunate" circumstances, begin looking for opportunities or lessons God wants you to learn. The journey was not meant to be easy, but if you know Christ, the end result will be eternally rewarding.

I’m sorry to say but I often notice how people in poverty have 3+ children. I’m not blaming them but I do think if you want such a large family, you have to be very intentional about it and be absolutely certain you can provide for them… no matter what. You have to own a house and have life insurance as a bare minimum. Otherwise you’re putting yourself and your innocent offspring in danger of becoming homeless if something goes wrong.

"you can't stereotype homelessness" that is what that young lady said. She is right. I had to flee from a neighbor who was selling drugs right next door & kept stalking me. That led me to move. Move right into a shelter. No one helped me nor protected me. I was so scared. But I wasn't going to go to jail for associating with the likes of that former neighbor. Anyone can become homeless.

It is a shame that the most powerful, and greedy btw, country on Earth cannot guarantee their citizens a decent way of life. As a Swiss friend told me once, the US might be the richest country, but it is the “3rd world of the 1st world”. Probably you don’t know this, but many countries in Latina America are pioneers in social programs helping people to improve their lives. And there’s one thing for sure: in Mexico if you have a job is unlikely to end up in the street. You won’t have a ‘fancy’ life but you won’t end up in the streets. For instance, Cuba has no homeless people and countries like Uruguay or Chile have very little. Why these people don’t take the jobs immigrants are willing to perform? Some might ask why Latin Americans still, in fewer numbers, going to the US? Wages, the wages allowing them to send money to their families. Instead of complaining, these poor folks should be on the fields of wealthy California!

Renting your house.. is the 1st mistake people do.. do not rent to live in your house.. Buy the damn house.. but not by credit.. Credit is equal with rent.. 1 missed payment and you lose everything..Is hard to put the money up front for a house.. but it is the best bet if you do not want to end up on the streets.

You call it free will? I call it an excuse.
