Thanks as always for watching folks and for all the LOVELY comments on last weeks upload regarding my question about upload frequency, etc, it really means a lot. I hope you enjoyed this week's red clay fiasco, this stuff is terribly messy, and apologies for the finger injury nonsense. It's such a pain when things like this occur, but it's healing after the first round of treatment...
Pleased you enjoy them. He's a little spark in the workshop, keeps me on my toes and barks at the delivery people but forces me to take breaks and to go for walks.
Hi Florian, looking forwards to seeing more of your work weekly. I have been doing more throwing lately as my university’s ceramic studio has opened again and find your videos inspiring and your attention to detail something to strive for!
Loved the video, my cat came and sat with me to watch and she fell asleep on my lap reaching her paws towards the phone during the trimming stage. Soothing for everyone involved I think.
I've been watching your videos for awhile now and I must say, i really appreciate the videos you've done helping beginners. If I'm going to dedicate time and effort to learning a craft well, i want to learn it correctly the first time so i don't have to later unlearn bad habits. Thanks for helping to make learning this craft more accessible.
I went to the doctors recently for a checkup. The doctor looked at my hands and said ‘what’s the matter with your fingers ‘? ‘ I’m a potter I replied’ . ‘ oh I see …’ 😂😂😂
I am interested in seeing a video dedicated to the techniques for base trimming. With details on accenting the form of the vessel through features within the base. Thanks for your detailed explanations in your video
I would love to see a video on the feet of your pots as I think any experimentation would be exciting! I also love the red stoneware and how you are able to refine it. Can’t wait for the finished piece and love the weekly uploads!
I love listening to your narration. You describe everything so well and so clearly. I learn so much from these videos even though I don't throw and I look forward to them.
It's probably way more difficult to throw clay this way and I hope your finger heals fast enough ! I've been a piano player for 7 years and each time I injured my hand/fingers it's been so hard to play music or practice , finger cuts matter a lot if you're trying to be delicate..
As someone who has spent 18 months on medication with a notorious side effect of skin drying, in a place with low humidity winters, I can suggest a few things to help with the finger paronychia. If the infection does not subside, there may be some foreign matter with in the skin (this was common for me with wood splinters). Might need to work to squeeze some gunk out. Very hot, but still bareable water and soaking your finger for a time (up to an hour) will kill bacteria in the wound. (bacteria are very intolerant to heat). Hope it heals up 🤞🏻
Thank you so much for your videos Florian. I think you have taught me most of what I know about wheel throwing pottery. I’d love to see a video dedicated to trimming the bottom of your posts as you suggest here. Looking forward to seeing more! Also your dog spinning made me laugh 😂
Hi Florian, Great video, helpful as always. Hope your finger heals soon. Love the pooch cameo. Would love more content about trimming. Every video I walk away with more tips and knowledge. Many thanks.
Me too. It would be marvellous! The glaze helps retain it a bit but I should also try applying it a touch thicker as it has a very intense crimson tone. Thanks for watching!
@@floriangadsby is it possible to make a glaze that resembles the glossines of a leather hard clay? it would be really interesting to see something like this also, it is my pleasure to watch these videos every sunday, always very calming and comfy
The clay reminded me of a clay I tried out in college that was called Jamaica from the company the college used in the ceramic class. It was a very gritty clay but had a lot of oxide in it so it was a brownish red and the celadon glaze was a beautiful pick to use. We also had another glaze called beer bottle very interesting reactions.
Florian, you should make a video of you doing something outside of your comfort zone, more of a fun(ny) video. Like trying to make a mini Ciro or something 😂. I love all your videos and how you unselfishly share your wealth of knowledge with the world. I just think it would be fun to see you try something you don’t do everyday with clay, a more goofy type video if you will. ❤❤❤ Let your hair down and just GO CRAZY 🤪 😂
You should do the doctor double glove method. One finger glove, tape it down enough for flexibility, second finger glove, that way you won’t have to worry about water getting in and loosening the bandaid.
I have a similar none healing wound. My suspicion is that the area is high motion, preventing the wound from closing. If you can afford it, maybe a couple days off will help. Or otherwise trying to keep pressure off that finger tip. Also, I love that improvised cot. I personally hate finger cots cuz they're so tight. That would be much better.
Made myself a few improvised finger covers of that style when working in kitchens with burns or cuts, cuz the grind can't stop. I recently played with translating the shape and flow of the pot into the base, or part of it too. On some tall cups and bowls. Wonder how would you solve that with your more angular shapes
Truly a lovely piece. Intrigued by your new foot trimming Idea. I just murdered a great piece by over trimming the foot. Do you have any tricks other than don’t over trim them?
Don't over trim them. Of course I still ruin a few now and then, with time you'll ruin less. Thrown pots become more consistent, as does trimming, and so on. Make sure you're constantly checking thickness, even if that means removing the pot from the wheel and feeling the cross section. Don't trim when the clay is too soft or too hard, both make errors far more likely.
I believe that's what it started out as! Then as a potter, it was kept damp for 8 hours straight for a few days throwing, and that developed into something else! I dealt with the pesky ingrown nail but the rumpled skin persisted. I'm going to have to give you guys a finger update at this point.
It may have started as an ingrown nail, but it looks like it has developed into a paronychia. And keeping the finger wet is a great way to prevent it from healing….
Florian. I will be painfully honest: I am not attracted to your designs. I find them too angular and inert. I do however love your approach to sharing and teaching, and attention to detail. Your techniques and calm voice are a great inspiration. I am deeply inspired to rediscover pottery which I have not done since I took my IGCSEs in the mid-90s. Do not modify your designs based on this feedback, but please keep giving, as I (at least) find your vidoes inspirational.
@floriangadsby I did write "painful". I do hope that the rollercoaster wasn't to emotional. I would sincerely like to support you by buying from you,but the showcased items don't fit my taste. I did notice a couple more "organic" or "bulbous" pieces on a shelf after writing my comment. I meant no offence. Taste IS individual after all...
Looking forward for the glazing. Hope your finger is better now, but if not I recommend Betaisodone. It's an ointment containing iodine ( maybe It's called different in the UK...and it doesnt burn). And put a wound plaster over the injurie at least during sleep. The humidity underneath the plaster helps the skin healing. And Ciro had a little dance with the mop😄
I really don't know how you do it, but it seems that every video helps me with something I've been dealing with at the wheel recently... Maybe I just have a lot of problems! 😅 I hope Ciro showed that mop who's in charge. ☺

The small inserts of your dog are lovely!

@@floriangadsbyhaving my dog in my office making me take breaks and go for walks has made me feel more human and less like a cog, very much agree.

Thanks so much for watching Kaitlin, means a lot! Best of luck with your throwing.
Hope your finger recovers soon! And your dog's cameo appearances are adorable!
I hope speedy recovery for your finger 🤞🏻
Thank you, friend!
The way the clay shines is incredible

I'd show you guys roll over but he refuses to do it on any hard floor.

This piece looks absolutely gorgeous, im really excited to see it finished! I hope your finger heals fast :]

Great news about the weekly videos Florian and yes please for a video on new pot feet designs . ( said no one literally ever)😂

I love the new colors of clay and glaze you are woking with!
These are so pretty! I would def buy from you if every time I checked the site it wasn’t sold out.. You make some good stuff!!
Yes, please do a video of experimental pot-feet. I am starting to throw better and I'm working to make my feet finer. Also, yay for finger cots!
Hoping your hand recovers quickly! I've used the rubber glove and bandage trick as well.
Also, awww your dog is adorable and I love seeing him in these videos!
Try applying a triple antibiotic ointment to your finger and cover with a bandage.
ah yes Ciro's greatest nemesis: the mop
I love seeing your dog in the videos now haha
i wish that the ceramic kept this color, it looks so good, this deep red is the most beautiful clay that i've ever seen

Sounds like lovely clay! Also a big fan of the beer bottle glaze, was it green or brown?
I LOVE YOUR videos.
More glaze tests?? I’m really interested in your experience and understanding of glazes and your preferences.
Electrical tape also works well on sealing the finger bandage
😍🤩😍🤩😍SPIN!!! PAW!!! 😍🤩😍🤩😍 So adorable! And working with a sore finger! Totally BOSS! I hope you heal up very soon.
11:30 Now that’s practically over aesthetics right there
lets gooo (oh no i hope that finger heals)

This video title has the same energy as those videos called stuff like "day drinking and smoking a cigarettes' in the public park at 2:15pm"

That spin trick was so cute!!! I need to know what your dog's name is
He's called Ciro! :)
Florian, pottery seems like quite a solitary pursuit, do you not get lonely?

Throwing with fish hooks. Next video with an injured finger. lol
here early! Hey Florian

A beautiful pot. I'm sure you're taking care, but since you said the finger doesn't want to heal, do make sure you've gone to a doctor about it.
I haven't yet... but if after this round of treatment it persists I'll be going!
