When he mentioned McSpadden dulcimers my ears perked up. I've played McSpaddens for ové 50 years. Been to The Dulcimer Shop many times. I remember Lynn McSpadden from years ago when I'd see him at the Folk Music Festival in Mountain View.
I've played acoustic guitar for many years, never heard of a mountain dulcimer till i saw it in an auction. I'm hoping i will win but if not then I'll be purchasing one.
Make sure you buy a good one. I bought one in a pawn shop that was impossible to tune and poorly made. I then bought one (before pandemic) made by Howard Rugg of Capritaurus Dulcimers. He had started making them again one or two at a time for his enjoyment. He is in his mud 80’s now. Then i had one made by him with some very special aged woods he had in his workshop for about 40 years. I had him add extra frets for me ( not all the extras that would have made it chromatic- its a short VSL - vibrating string length- short neck for my small arthritic hands). It is gorgeous sounding, looking, high quality instrument and lower priced than its actual value! I LOVE it! Has a pick up in it as well. You will want to consider the VSL when you purchase one vs hand size. 23”- 30”
I played the guitar, ukulele, mandolin before playing dulcimer. I got mine at really cool places called wood-N-strings in a small town called Townsend,Tennessee. They are not cheap.
No, Kansas is flat farm land and unfortunately no mountains. The instrument is called a mountain dulcimer because it originated in the Appalachian Mountains. 😊
