The show format is made to coerce people into adopting leftist opinions. They simplify an opinion they don't want, surround it with jokes and laughter to make you not take it seriously. Then for the opinion they want you to take, it gets quiet and/or there's cheers.

You are generally right, by which I mean all are called to become saints, to follow Christ Jesus in goodness and humility.
I think hating the body in a disordered fashion (e.g. feeling you are evil or wrong because of your body) is a cross or temptation, something to plea for God's mercy and aid with. I think hating the body in an ordered fashion (not giving in to gluttony, lusts, wrath etc.) is to be sought and enouraged to grow in virtue.

When you mentioned people claiming that divorce doesn't harm kids because they're resilient, I turned to my mother and asked "as a child of divorced parents, what do you have to say on this?" and she just whispered "divorce is horrible."
This would be a great discussion (if he hasn't already done it.) So many people will say "divorce is less damaging than being exposed to the constant fighting." I would love to be better able to refute this. Well-meaning people giving such arguments only further normalizes it.

Isn't it interesting that conservatives are mocked as 'childish' when they speak up against the transgender ideology. The term 'childish ness' is used as an insult, as the understanding is that to reason like a child is a negative. However, those like Mr Oliver praise and believe the 'childlike' assertions that children make when they claim they are 'born in the wrong body'. Why aren't children then ignored for their childishness when they make these claims?

At 52:50, it's worth also pointing out a particular bit of statistical sleight-of-hand John Oliver is doing with that suicidality figure: He doesn't give any comparator! Is that 58% higher, lower, or about the same as the rate among those who *do* get the "gender affirming care" they sought? John Oliver isn't telling us -- probably because either (a) he's citing a garbage study that didn't even bother to get such data to begin with, or (b) he knows it wouldn't look good for his case.
The fact is, suicidality is heartbreakingly common throughout the trans population, and there's no solid data to show that medical transition has any benefit on that outcome in the long term. In fact, the few good longitudinal studies we do have provide data to the contrary: Any reduction in suicidality from transition is only temporary, and returns to baseline over time.
This is *especially* pertinent for the debate over transition of minors, because as Trent notes here (as have other figures like Matt Walsh), the vast majority of children and adolescents who express gender dysphoria grow out of it by adulthood, and there's no evidence that this desistance is merely repression, such that the underlying dysphoria (and resulting mental health concerns, including suicidality) is fundamentally unmitigated. *Even if* early transition did dramatically reduce suicidality (which, again, we have no proof that it does), the effect size would need to be *astronomical* to compare to the profound reduction in suicidality that comes with desistance. The fact is, we have no proof that the astronomically high suicide risks associated with gender dysphoria will be alleviated in the long term by early transition. But we have *very good evidence* that simply letting these kids grow up normally and come to accept the bodies God gave them *does* prevent such a tragic outcome, in an overwhelming majority of cases!
Everything he does is sleight-of-hand. Lies in other words. Wouldn't be a problem if he was actually a comedian and not an activist in (poor) disguise.

john oliver has a large audience, almost 5x bill maher's (at least on youtube). if you're not allowed to respond to a famous comedian's political arguments in a public forum, that's a problem. more adults probably get their news from sources like his than from the so-called reliable sources of mainstream media

I think people should use the bathroom that corresponds to the sex they most outwardly resemble. It’s a question of practicality. I don’t think it’s a good idea for a trans girl or a fem-boy or someone that looks really really feminine to use the men’s bathroom, nor do I think it’s a good idea that some big burly trans man using male hormones uses the women’s bathroom.
That to be makes perfectly logical sense. There is no reason to split people up into the right bathroom depending on what their genitals are, as sometimes this is completely opposite one’s external appearance, and it’s not seen anyway unless you’re staring at peoples genitals while they use a urinal (why?)

I can't speak for swimming, but in running men have an advantage from birth due to their pelvic structure and center of mass. So even if a woman had the same muscle mass, same V02 max, etc. the man would still have an advantage because of their bone structure. You can't change that.

Oliver is so pre-occupied with trying to paint conservatives as stupid people... meanwhile, there is a growing number of well-meaning people, who are not necessarily interested in politics, that are trying to help people who are deeply ill.

This issue highlights the heartlessness of healthcare in the USA.
Prima facie it seems a very hard claim, that messing with hormones in a growth phase of a body will not lead to long term impact
That it comes from medical authorities who by their professional training cannot claim ignorance, it's very difficult not to call their position an outright lie, and an insidiously malicious outright lie at that, as they stand to gain financially both from the procedures and the life-long dependence on drugs and hormones.
I wonder if the rise in childhood gender dysphoria is related to the rise in early-onset puberty. Seeing one's body change at an early age could certainly make a child dislike their body and perceive a "mismatch" between body and brain. Anyone know if this has been studied?

I think it does. It definitely isn’t out of the question! I was 9 years old when I started puberty, technically 8, bc I started other changes then. But I felt distressed then about my changes. None of my classmates were going through those changes themselves. My teachers noticed I was uncomfortable with it and tried addressing it with me and my parents. I felt like a total freak. Imagine if these loons would’ve been around then. I would’ve been the first to sign up for puberty blockers.

unlikely as gender dysphoria description is hardly exhausted by "dislike of one's body", but other than that it's worth mentioning that gender dysphoria has quite literal neurological trademarks as people with display patterns more fitting to the other sex. So unless puberty has significant impact on brain structure it is unlikely that puberty is relevant.

I’ve been a practicing psychotherapist for over a decade, and have spent over two decades studying psychology, child development, human nature, and the like. (Interestingly, this journey has led me BACK to my Catholic roots after 25 years away…) The national organizations and associations are absolutely wrong about this issue, and many of us know this to be the case. “Gender-affirmation” and “gender-affirming medical care” is child abuse. Thank you, Trent, for such a great video debunking the ignorant and incoherent silliness of John Oliver.

Always a heartbreaking topic, even for adults dealing with this, to use these sick or at least extremely vulnerable adults and children as guinea pigs for experimental therapies. The poisoning and mutilations will likely have lifelong effects for many, up to shortening lifespan, like every therapy can. The only question is if it will be rare deaths due to allergic reactions, infections etc. or potentially common issues like cancers causing horrific damage.
There's no question it causes sterility. Which, to do this to children, is barbaric.
@@altalingua It can and typically will cause sterility is my understanding. Those that only undergo brief posioning or "therapy" may escape with little or no lasting effects on their fertility, just as those who undergo certain forms of mutilation or "affirming surgery".
what experimental therapies are being tested? What mutilations and poisoning are you refering to? Clearly you aren't refering to hormones or surgery as taht is already tested and neither fit description of poisoning or mutilation. And since when does every therapy can shorten lifespan?

I used to love Oliver and watch him quite a lot, until I slowly realised that the vast majority of his argumentation for the ideological platform he is promoting consists of entirely unserious rhetoric and ridicule.
No one would change their gender for sports? Do you know how much money goes into sports? I'd argue hormone therapy could be compared to steroid use, both are dangerous and create unfair advantage. When you aren't winning in your own sport division it makes sense to change your division if you have a biological advantage in another division, especially if those victories can result in sometimes *millions*

This is a very impressive "takedown" of progressive comedian John Oliver. (I don't know why John Oliver continues to lean further and further to the left with time. He's now a naturalized US citizen and doesn't have to please the media elite any longer.) Because of John's considerable influence, however, it was important that someone with Trent's knowledge and skills counter Oliver's pernicious arguments point by point. Excellent job. It's so sad that we live at a time when flawed ideology trumps good reasoning. Even sadder, schools at all levels are far less interested in imparting good reasoning skills than they are about correct pronoun usage!

This is a masterful episode Trent, and one that requires multiple watches for sure. I've been waiting for you to do a deep-dive like this into transgender ideology. Thanks for the plethora of examples and counter arguments that we can use as Catholics to firm up our case without bringing theology into the conversation.
One thing I've been struggling with is trying to understand where I'm drawing the line on this issue as a Catholic. When it comes to the abortion debate, obviously killing a human being is a moral wrong and so that's something we want to be outlawed. But I think it gets a little murky when it comes to the transgender issue because sex reassignment surgeries performed on adults aren't exactly hurting anyone except the person asking for them. So what is the ask here, really? Do we want the surgeries outlawed because it's a gross violation of the hippocratic oath on the part of the medical professionals? Or do we just want them outlawed for children? Should we care (from a secular, policy perspective) if adults are harming themselves with this false ideology? I'd love to hear from you regarding this! I don't think the Church has drawn a line further than "don't do it on yourself nor on children", but I would be in favour of outlawing it outright. Today, if a guy walks up to a doctor and tells him "cripple me, I feel like a cripple", the doctor would be rightly persecuted as a criminal for going through this request from a clearly mentally unwell person. The request cannot be formulated unless one has already lost the ability to mentally care for their own integrity. I'd outlaw sexual surgeries simply out of consistency, there is no substantial nor circumstantial relevant difference between the two cases.

The Church is VEHEMENTLY against bodily mutilation. As for laws thats a prudential matter and there isnt an obvious answer. At the very least we need to be banning them for minors. Minors cannot consent.
The suicide argument is the equivalent of a child holding his or her breath until he or she gets what he or she wants.

They have a document entitled U.S. Sex Reassignment Surgery Market Size, Share and Trends Analysis Report By Gender Transition (Male to Female, Female to Male), And Segment Forecasts, 2022-2030. I'm not sure if you've come across that information in your research, but I thought I'd share it. Also, have you read WPATH's standards of care material?

I have had many criticisms of our governor here in South Dakota, but protecting girls sports and her pro-life position allowed me to vote for her in this last election. My heart breaks for people who suffer from gender dysphoria. Trent gives a very good rebuttal in this video with charity and truth.
I do find John Oliver hilarious, but yeah, his views do run me the wrong way quite often.

I've noticed that when you pay attention to it instead of going along with it, what laughter he attracts is fairly spare and often somewhat nervous in nature.
A good comedian isn't concerned about being taken seriously - comedy is about framing reality as absurd, and that's only acceptable if it's done for laughs.
JO does obviously care about being taken seriously - his entire shtick is about how ludicrous those people and situations he derides must be, and so by default he must be the one you can trust. Even in these clips he frames those critical of the trans ideology as whipping themselves into frenzied states - yet his own demeanor can accurately be described as constantly on the edge of falling into such a state himself. It falls apart pretty quickly once you look past the presentation.
@@ironymatt If you watch videos where people edited out the laugh track on these comedians, the content becomes a lot less funny. We are extremely sensitive to the sound of laughter!
I can't say I've ever laughed at Jon Oliver. The whole show political, its format is a way to coerce you into agreeing with leftist politics. They simplify a point they are against, make you listen to people laugh at it, then show you the actual view they want you to hold by keeping things silent for "seriousness" or cheering. Jon Stewart, Stephen Colbert, and all of the Daily Show people are demons that have destroyed your country.
There are numerous people who've reported having socially transitioned, only to later change their mind about it and be cancelled by everyone in their school or social circle for being "transphobic." Just imagine being one of these kids. Even socially transitioning has lasting consequences, let alone pumping chemicals into your body or undergoing surgery.

You notice in the section where they say that the growing number of trans identifying people isnt a social phenomenon that it's completely undermined by how the same people feel about gender? They believe gender is solely a social construct, yet when confronted with the idea that all of these 'conversions' are purely social contagion, they abruptly change their tune on the issue - "thats just who these people are".
It's instances like these that make you realize that this is just a childish ideology. Like the kids in the schoolyard that change the game of tag so that they never lose, ultimately spoiling everyone's fun.
