Hey Creatures! Welcome back to my channel! Here are my tips for setting up and looking after medicinal leeches. Please don't impulse buy leeches or any other animals unless you plan to care for them for the 10 years they can live for. They're not a 'quirky' pet to be paraded around. Please respect them. Much love to you all! PS: If you follow me on Twitter and Instagram (@emzoticofficial) you'll know that I'm currently in London. I'm considering a meetup, but not sure yet!!
    Love you all!! xxxx Em

    • @seanhunt138
      @seanhunt138 5 лет назад +45

Leeches are really clean and they have a pharmacy of antibiotics and antiseptic and antivirals in their blood. The most likely source of infection is if you don't properly take care of the bite after feeding. Ie an alcohol swab and a bandaid. The water the leech lives in can also be a factor of you don't take care of it properly. But I would make sure you get a medical leech from a reputable vendor if you are going to let it feed on you.

TO EVERYONE CONSIDERING A PET LEECH
(and obviously considering feeding them yourself)
Please, please get yourself tested for bleeding disorders! Many people do not know that they have a bleeding disorder until they either get tested or have major surgery and due to the anticoagulant in leeches' saliva, can be very dangerous for someone with any type of bleeding disorder.
Otherwise, this was a very informative video ;)

If you want a leech without the blood feedings and crazy poop things ( i don't know what else to call it lol), the next best thing is a slug! I know that seems gross, but leeches are gross to many people too. The main differences are that slugs can easily be found in your garden, where as leeches are typically bought online; slugs are terrestrial, while leeches are aquatic; and slugs eat leaves, but the leeches kept as pets are blodsuckers.
Slugs look rather dimilar to leeches, and make awesome pets. I hope this is a solution for some people.

    • @aquabluerose7734

lettuce child and if you get them out of your garden then they go from bad pests to good pets! No insecticide needed! It's best to look up if the slugs in your area have diseases since in some regions at least snails sometimes are contaminated. (I read an article where some people got sick from accidentally eating a snail that was in their salad!)Wash your hands before you eat after touching slugs and snails. I've had pet slugs and snails before. Also your guinea pig is cute! I used to have one!

I do feed mine pig's blood; it can't contain any anticoagulants or other additives, and has to be warmed up to body temperature in a bowl of hot water. They actually do latch on to a clotted hunk of it, bloat on it for an hour or so and leave their visible three-pointed bite mark on the clot surface. I've raised babies to huge sizes this way, not medicinalis but manillensis - the giant buffalo leech :)
If I fed them my own blood it might kill them; they're really sensitive to blood pressure medications.

Hi Em! I read that having substrate (gravel, sand, etc) is healthier for your leech to shed its skin because it can rub against the bottom to rid its old skin. Also leeches live naturally in lakes, ponds, etc which have a natural bed.
They also like to hide and wouldn’t hiding places be nicer for the leech? More natural? I also saw that many other youtubers have a land area for their leech to sit upon. Just some pointers. Love your videos!

Starts video explaining that leeches are living creatures and to care for them properly...Proceeds to show her leaches in small jars and recommend that you keep them in small jars...
Leeches should have at least a a gallon tank of water with preferably something to rub on and a darker hiding area as well. Some also need/"enjoy" having a section of land to go up onto as they like.
Just because something can live in a jar does not mean that is the ideal environment for them, there are some awesome examples of low footprint and maintenance tank setups with just something like a decorative fish tank item and hide in them that work great and are in 2.5-5 gallon tanks.

There are so many animals out there that don't get the care they need. Maybe people keeping them should instead have a leech? Then again, they too can be neglected.
