Leeches are really clean and they have a pharmacy of antibiotics and antiseptic and antivirals in their blood. The most likely source of infection is if you don't properly take care of the bite after feeding. Ie an alcohol swab and a bandaid. The water the leech lives in can also be a factor of you don't take care of it properly. But I would make sure you get a medical leech from a reputable vendor if you are going to let it feed on you.
i used to go to my cousin’s place and when we were 13 we used to go to this pond and there was this one HUGE leech and i called him Vampire .. I keep my fish in a 30 litre tank with one or two others and I've had them for a while in there and they're quite large but would that be in enough space?
@@slimebelief you didn't say what kind of fish, but 30 liters isn't enough for much more than a single betta or some shrimp. You should do some research and find out exactly what your pets need so you can provide them with proper care.
TO EVERYONE CONSIDERING A PET LEECH (and obviously considering feeding them yourself) Please, please get yourself tested for bleeding disorders! Many people do not know that they have a bleeding disorder until they either get tested or have major surgery and due to the anticoagulant in leeches' saliva, can be very dangerous for someone with any type of bleeding disorder. Otherwise, this was a very informative video ;) xxx A medical student with an interest in exotics
If you want a leech without the blood feedings and crazy poop things ( i don't know what else to call it lol), the next best thing is a slug! I know that seems gross, but leeches are gross to many people too. The main differences are that slugs can easily be found in your garden, where as leeches are typically bought online; slugs are terrestrial, while leeches are aquatic; and slugs eat leaves, but the leeches kept as pets are blodsuckers. Slugs look rather dimilar to leeches, and make awesome pets. I hope this is a solution for some people.
lettuce child and if you get them out of your garden then they go from bad pests to good pets! No insecticide needed! It's best to look up if the slugs in your area have diseases since in some regions at least snails sometimes are contaminated. (I read an article where some people got sick from accidentally eating a snail that was in their salad!)Wash your hands before you eat after touching slugs and snails. I've had pet slugs and snails before. Also your guinea pig is cute! I used to have one!
I have to admit, watching a video that could have rightly been titled "Impossibly Beautiful British Woman Earnestly Explains Proper Care for Pet Leeches", is one of the most surreal experiences of my time on RUclips.
"If u see a leech in the wild don't take it home" oh dont worry. U don't have to worry. What you should be worried about is if I yeet it across the lake

I do feed mine pig's blood; it can't contain any anticoagulants or other additives, and has to be warmed up to body temperature in a bowl of hot water. They actually do latch on to a clotted hunk of it, bloat on it for an hour or so and leave their visible three-pointed bite mark on the clot surface. I've raised babies to huge sizes this way, not medicinalis but manillensis - the giant buffalo leech :) If I fed them my own blood it might kill them; they're really sensitive to blood pressure medications.

Hi Em! I read that having substrate (gravel, sand, etc) is healthier for your leech to shed its skin because it can rub against the bottom to rid its old skin. Also leeches live naturally in lakes, ponds, etc which have a natural bed. They also like to hide and wouldn’t hiding places be nicer for the leech? More natural? I also saw that many other youtubers have a land area for their leech to sit upon. Just some pointers. Love your videos!
Medicinal uses for leeches is fascinating actually. I've watched a few videos of burn victims using them it's so interesting. Also, using fish skin on burns is also pretty interesting to see.
Many potent anti blood clotting medications are derived from leech saliva and they save thousands of lives each year. They are also used to treat gang green . These are not alternative medicine treatments
They put leeches on my face when I had a skin graph! They were so cute but the nurse was so scared lmao! So I put them on myself and they were so cool to touch!!! The leeches really helped my circulation and I was really impressed. #stopleechabuse lol I didn’t bring them home, but a episode of greys anatomy involved a leech and I watched it after hehehe
Nooby Cuber leeches are champs in the medical arena helping reattachments and skin grafts, glad you had a positive experience in a touch situation! Most people do not realize they are considered medical devices and kept in hospitals.
Here's a thing! Leeches (or at least my Claremonde) LOVE to crawl through things! I learned this because I don't have foreceps and I was trying to pick Clara up with the handle end of my scalpel, and she just kept crawling through the hole! It was adorable and you should consider including something they can crawl in and through in their tank for their enjoyment! I actually cut the scalpel blade off and stuck the handle inside!
Lol my girlfriend is a nurse and when I told her about your bloody genius idea, she didn't know what to think 😂 the look on her face was pretty amusing
I find that the leech bites itch a bunch while healing. Like a mosquito bite, because of the anticoagulant in their saliva. They are fascinating creatures though so I think it’s worth it!
Emzotic, You've inspired me to get a leech. So far, I've had him for a week now and we've had our first shed and first meal. They're such neat and misunderstood creatures. Thank you for sharing your babies.
As an owner of a Dracula leech (a very similar species to the Eurasian Medicinal), I found this video extremely helpful! There are so few resources for leech care out there, and my Louis has become quite the prized friend thusfar. The sanitary napkin tip was brilliant, and I've taken it up in the care of my little friend, as I feed him quite regularly. Keep doing what you're doing, and live happy knowing that one little fellow (and the arm that feeds him) is benefiting from your content!
I’m so happy about this. I’ve been getting a lot my leech care tips from an old tumblr for pet leeches that was made 3738292 years ago, that was abandoned. This is very refreshing!
Thanks to this video, I started researching leeches and fell in love! So I got a pair (feeding now) and I just adore their coloring, the way they move, and just enjoy having them around.
@Luc no it's pretty much the same something that's supposed to be in the wild. So it's hypocritical to get upset when people have a monkey or tiger as a pet because hey their "fascinated" by them so why not?
@@scotteishalucas9624 hope you dont have a dog or cat because that would incredibly hypocritical as humans have mutated dogs and cats to unrecognizable to their wild ancestor. So much so many of them have major health issues that do not occur in the wild.
Because she's an animal educator in her day to day life and that requires for you to have many animals and it can also be a competitive job. As long as she gives the animals what they need, there literally is no problem.
Hey just wanted to say adding gravel or sand is a an important thing for leeches When leeches shed they dig into the people or sand and scratch their skin on it. It’s really irresponsible to not add something they can dig into. Also a hide can help with stress.
My leech will be arriving next month from leeches.com. Think around April 1st is when the site says they will be shipping. I for sure will be doing an unboxing video. People think I'm weird and leeches are gross (say that about my reptiles also) but hey, I don't call their kids names so don't name call mine. My leech will be precious and it will be mine.
woah- you know what, before i got into betta fish care someone gave us a .5 tank so now i have a useless .5 gallon tank "for fish" and this might be an interesting endeavor?
I never plan on buying the animals in your videos, I just watch the entire thing because you are just very entertaining & well I love animals and information on animals. You are my favorite RUclipsr & I think that it's amazing how you know so much about your animals and you make your animals very happy with a a very smart and caring owner. :)
Other people: Hi, I just finished feeding my hamster! Em: I just fed my leach named Demogorgan my own blood and now I have a pad on my arm arm to stop the bleeding!
Starts video explaining that leeches are living creatures and to care for them properly...Proceeds to show her leaches in small jars and recommend that you keep them in small jars... Leeches should have at least a a gallon tank of water with preferably something to rub on and a darker hiding area as well. Some also need/"enjoy" having a section of land to go up onto as they like. Just because something can live in a jar does not mean that is the ideal environment for them, there are some awesome examples of low footprint and maintenance tank setups with just something like a decorative fish tank item and hide in them that work great and are in 2.5-5 gallon tanks.
Thanks Em for introducing me to pet leeches! I just got my baby Moss two days ago and he ate his first meal with me today! Still haven't stopped bleeding after like six hours, but I'm keeping it contained!
The one thing that's rubbed me the wrong way, the fact people get leeches as pets as use their other animals as their food source?! do people really do that? If so, that's incredibly cruel. If you're not prepared to feed them via your own blood, how dare you put them onto another pet and be like "Yup, that'll do" Brilliant care video! Leeches are not for me but I do love to learn about new animals
I met some rice farmers before. They said there are plenty of leeches in rice field trying to suck out blood and they hate leeches haha! Not a pet for me either but as living creative they are pretty special :)
I have a leech and I personally think they need a plant some large gravel and a dark place to hide🤷♀️ with a minimum size of a gallon imo bc they are still living animals that enjoy enrichment
I would love to have a leech! I think they’re cute and fascinating. Sadly I have a chronic illness and one of the most taxing side effects is anemia. I don’t think I could healthily support a young or old leech :( Maybe later in life, if I find a partner, they’ll be healthy and interested enough to take care of a single leech. What a cool and unique pet. It gives a whole new meaning to putting your blood, sweat, and tears into raising them.
I would have NEVER thought of keeping leeches, but Demogorgon is so fat and cute! And really pretty coloration! Definitely something I would consider! Thank you!
you should provide some Stone for the leech to shed its Skin on and also a flat container with low water Level is way better then a jar. They breathe through their Skin and keeping them in a jar makes them fight for good Position to breathe
I appreciate your passion and love for all animals. I was a bit squeamish about the idea of leeches especially due to the way they are fed, but after watching your video I can see how you find them fascinating. I wish more people who say they love animals were as open minded as you
What a wonderful pet! Doesn't take much space, doesn't need visits to the vet, feeding it is free and you pretty much only need to change the water it lives in. In the last month I've spend over 200 euros on my dog's vet bills and 100 on it's food. Plus all the treats n. stuff it gets daily. There are so many animals out there that don't get the care they need. Maybe people keeping them should instead have a leech? Then again, they too can be neglected.
I’ve always wanted a leech as a pet, however, I’m very very anemic, and my doctor and I decided it wasn’t a great idea for me personally. Watching your videos has made me feel a bit better about not owning one of my own, so thank you!
So, are you a cat person or a dog person? Neither. Oh! Fish?? Nope. ... Birds? ... Leeches actually B-) ... O_O All jokes aside, this was a very informative video, thank you! I have much more compassion for these creatures now and respect for their carers 💜

I did not know people have leaches as pets
Colton Worley It's like having pet fish. A pet doesn't have to be soft and loving, to be loved.
I didn't know either but it is very interesting.
Honey me neither😂😂
Why not?
Lol my girlfriend is a nurse and when I told her about your bloody genius idea, she didn't know what to think 😂 the look on her face was pretty amusing
I find that the leech bites itch a bunch while healing. Like a mosquito bite, because of the anticoagulant in their saliva. They are fascinating creatures though so I think it’s worth it!

19 hours of continuous bleeding after the time they took to eat and I gotta use a pad as a bandage nope not for me lol
eeek definitely not a pet for me but they are interesting little creatures!
The only thing that grosses me out is the fact that you don’t stop bleeding for ages after they’ve eaten 😱😬x

*Yesh, i thought leaches were exotic onions*
That's a leek ;) lol
Me too
Poor leaches
Me : *Hears birds breeding* UHM EXCUSE ME I THOUGHT THIS WAS A KIDS VIDEO
Well, there is nothing wrong with having breeding birds if they are not on camera, am i right? ;p
Emzotic, You've inspired me to get a leech. So far, I've had him for a week now and we've had our first shed and first meal. They're such neat and misunderstood creatures. Thank you for sharing your babies.
I don’t want a leech but I love watching these care videos just bc it’s nice ??
Did you name them after Stranger Things
Jelly bean hmmmmmmmmm interesting thought, never thought of that
No demogorgon is inspired by riverdale
that's not riverdale, it's stranger things lol got your shows switched up
@@silverbellz975 they were being sarcastic, it was a joke because it's obviously from stranger things
SilverBellz r/wooooosh
Bless your soul for having the heart to care for these creatures I would otherwise stomp on on first sight
Thank you ❤
I’m so happy about this.
So you give the leech your blood?????? I think I’ll just stick with my cat😂
Little peanut Nursery
You give your cat a daily blood sacrifice?
Do you not?
Cobra Storm That’s the only way to keep them happy. The ones who don’t demand a blood sacrifice on the daily are robotics.
But cats smell.
@@elizabethbennett8729 But you can get toxoplasmosis from leeches lol
... I'm sorry but why does everything have to be a "pet" ?...
Agreed
Luc a fish that feeds on your blood
Also a hide can help with stress.
bro it's just a parasite 💀
I have a full massive tank with a lot of rocks and gravel and like a pirate ship and stuff lol he loves it
@@fishywishyfishfisk regardless of what it is, when you choose to have it as a pet, you carry the responsibility of its wellbeing.
I would rather place some rocks as they are easier to clean and don’t need replacement after the leeches do the nuclear diarrhea thing
Cynful Exotics is it like a slug or nicer looking??
BellRain Chan both are cute !
I don't mind your goldfish tangent. #fishlivesmatter 🐟🐠
#fishlivesmatter
I'm spamming this everywhere
woah- you know what, before i got into betta fish care someone gave us a .5 tank so now i have a useless .5 gallon tank "for fish" and this might be an interesting endeavor?
I never plan on buying the animals in your videos, I just watch the entire thing because you are just very entertaining & well I love animals and information on animals. You are my favorite RUclipsr & I think that it's amazing how you know so much about your animals and you make your animals very happy with a a very smart and caring owner. :)
I love how she so proud to use that to stop the bleeding!😂😂❤️❤️
Olivia North
You know, if you let him that blood god will try and suck you dry...
Like a lawyer...
I think this comment is very important; hopefully she ends up seeing this.
bruh it's a leech
They look like soggy raisins. Absolutely beautiful.
20min - 3hrs??? So essentially feed when I have nothing to do that day.
I love that you're so passionate about animals. Amazing animals and outstanding owner
Creature crew? Sounds familiar, WILD KRATTS!!!!
It's the first video I found about medicinal leeches. As a chinese medicine practicer, it is pretty important for me to learn about this.
Thanks Em for introducing me to pet leeches! I just got my baby Moss two days ago and he ate his first meal with me today! Still haven't stopped bleeding after like six hours, but I'm keeping it contained!
bruh
@@fishywishyfishfisk ??
I brought one for myself today. already love him. first feeding tonight
@@Sam-ed3eb no reply, they died from blood loss
Lala Haha no no he’s still feeding his leech to this day until he eventually dies from blood loss
The one thing that's rubbed me the wrong way, the fact people get leeches as pets as use their other animals as their food source?! do people really do that? If so, that's incredibly cruel. If you're not prepared to feed them via your own blood, how dare you put them onto another pet and be like "Yup, that'll do"
Brilliant care video! Leeches are not for me but I do love to learn about new animals
Supposedly some people get leeches to treat a hematoma on one of their other animals, so hopefully it's just those people..
I met some rice farmers before. They said there are plenty of leeches in rice field trying to suck out blood and they hate leeches haha!
Not a pet for me either but as living creative they are pretty special :)
I am one of those people who are disgusted by leaches........ 🤢😳 They scare me so much
I have a leech and I personally think they need a plant some large gravel and a dark place to hide🤷♀️ with a minimum size of a gallon imo bc they are still living animals that enjoy enrichment
Janney Crosby thats True, but they don’t have eyes
@@The_Diminished actually, they do have eyes! Some can have up to ten!
I would love to have a leech! I think they’re cute and fascinating. Sadly I have a chronic illness and one of the most taxing side effects is anemia. I don’t think I could healthily support a young or old leech :(
Maybe later in life, if I find a partner, they’ll be healthy and interested enough to take care of a single leech.
I wish more people who say they love animals were as open minded as you
" respect your goldfish "

I have been doing leech therapy for 2 years and now I have 80 leeches in a small aquarium. They are good for maintaining my health. Nice video👍
Jojo Leo what benefits to they have?
Is it just me or did she just say can you stop breeding for a second?!?!? 😂😂😂
Petr Kaleja I did...
What animal was it that was breeding!? 😂

So, are you a cat person or a dog person?
