I have been flying for a while with my Mavic Pro but this is a great review. What I like about your clips is that you are concise, clear and accurate. There is no background music or annoying graphics. Thank you.
sorry to be off topic but does anybody know of a method to log back into an instagram account..? I was dumb lost my password. I appreciate any tips you can offer me
@Cassius Juan thanks so much for your reply. I got to the site through google and Im in the hacking process atm. Takes quite some time so I will get back to you later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
thanx. been trying to calibrate my mavic mini for the last two days now, was about to take it back to best buy and i decided to give it one more try after watching this video, didnt realize i had to pur on the side and back, thanx.
I've yet to get a drone, but I am looking at the DJI Mini as a first timer. However, I've seen a lot of YT videos when they mention about, "You may need to calibrate your compass". And I've always though, "Hmmm... Seems more hassle than it's worth!" And you've just explained it in such a simple and concise way, that I can move these calibrations out of the "Why I shouldn't buy a drone" list. Nice one. And thank you from the UK.
I appreciate the post and it's a very simple process that you'll only have to do very infrequently. Most of my flights are done without worrying about the compass and if it's off, the application will alert you and you can quickly calibrate it. The Mavic Mini is an amazingly cool drone and you'll have a lot of fun flying it. Be sure to sub the channel and stop back soon so you don't miss anything. Rick
Thank you, thank you, thank you. I learned to fly my mavic air with your assistance and now I am working on mastering the Mini. Your videos are exceptional - especially those little hidden gens. Appreciate all of your efforts.
Good video. First time I saw someone doing the calibration dance with their mini I lost it . It's nice to see someone that knows how to do the calibration correctly.
I always begin my compass calibration facing North, and carry a small compass in my drone bag. I've been doing it this way since before drones had compass, when calibrating cell phone compass. Cell phone compass and the first drones with compass included that step in the calibration instructions. For some reason newer drone compass calibration instructions have discluded that step, but I still do it that way anyway.
Duck, you're taking it to a whole other level with the compass and I'm sure it makes it more accurate. I've been lucky to not have any issues so far with the IMU or the compass. Also, I sent you a reply today to your email so let me know if you have any other questions. Rick
I'm sure DJI has their compass refined by now so it doesn't really matter what direction you start the calibration in. But it's just habit with me by now, so I do it that way. With cheaper drones I think it's more beneficial to start the calibration facing magnetic North. One sure sign you need to calibrate the compass is if your drone starts "toilet bowling"; flying in small counter-clockwise circles. That's caused by an out of calibration compass fighting with the GPS. They both want to be right so both keep trying to correct the drone.
That's good information Rick I hope the new users are really paying attention I wish I would have had that information when I first started thanks again for your videos
I down loaded the calibration procedure for the mavic pro and I was right according to that procedure and you are calibrating wrong, either that or they have changed the procedure, ok what is the correct procedure for the mini ?
It works either way... It’s even easier to do it the way DValley shows because DJI’s way can mess up the can if we aren’t careful... So if it works, why not!????
Andy, thanks so much for the post and it was a long time ago with the Scouts but some of those lessons stick with you. I'm glad you're enjoying the channel and hope to see you back here soon. Rick
Haye, thanks for stopping by and posting. You might want to use the sound comparison clip I posted a few days back instead. It has a lot of good detail and was one of the most common questions I received on the new Mavic Mini. Feel free to grab it. Here's a link - ruclips.net/video/IuKdOsFA_EQ/видео.html
Hi Rick, while the information your sharing is very important I think your delivery is a little fast. I had to replay the video a couple of times in order to get things in perspective, I don’t know, it may just be me and to ask you to slow down just a tad could be difficult as your experienced and know more about what’s happening the us Virgin flying novices. I find the information that you have very valuable, so thank you for that.
Thanks for this most valuable information. I have a problem with my directional display on my display. When the mavic is pointing away from me, it shows as pointing towards me and vice versa.. The sticks work correctly, though. for the left and right, front and back movements.
Hey Rick question ? Do you have a video on what stick controls pitch roll and yaw and if not would you be willing to make one for us flyers that have never touched a controller?
In mode 2 the left stick controls the throttle on its vertical axis and yaw on the horizontal. The right stick is cyclic and will pitch the craft in the same direction as the stick when oriented in the same direction as the pilot. In Europe, mode 1 is more common. There's a video called "Mode 1 vs Mode 2 - Drone Remote Control" on YT that goes over the differences.
Compass calibration: If the Mavic Mini is purchased directly from DJI, is the compass calibration set for its location in China? Do they calibrate it for your shipping address? I imagine this would be a bit time consuming trying to match up specific orders with specific delivery points. Or, on its initial power up after receipt, does it somehow calibrate itself or does it require a compass calibration on first use? Thank you for your videos as they are very informative!
Thanks for the video Rick! And now I need to calibrate the IMU on my mavic 2 pro. I was wondering how to fix the slight tilt it had when I was capturing video and photos recently. I think you answered my question.
Hi Rick. Does it really need to detach the camera cover when doing IMU and Compass calibrations? So for IMU you can do it once on your first flight and whenever the app tells you to do so BUT for compass calibration, aside from doing it during your first flight you need to do it everytime you change locations and especially when the app tells you? OR if its much safer for new users to do IMU and compass calibration in any flight even in the same locations or not and whenever you are changing batteries? Thanks for your always informative videos! Kudos!
Epson, you need to remove the gimbal lock every time you're going to power up the drone because the quad goes through a "power up" routine that moves the gimbal around to check it's motion and you'll get a gimbal error (and possibly damage the gimbal) if you don't. As far as the calibrations, do both the compass and IMU when the drone first arrives and then don;t worry about the IMU unless you see an error. I do the compass every time I move to a location far away (more than 2 hours) from the last place I flew. Thanks for the post and I hope that helps. Rick
He’s simply showing us an easier and more careful way to calibrate. He even said it, that doing it it as supposed has made him mess up a few of those fragile humbled cams. So if it works, then why not?????
Hi from Canada, can we have a brief view of the option on control screen (ipad, iphone , ect) the option we got with the mavic mini compare to a other DJI drone exemple follow me ect..love work, thanks you for alls those info. realy help, have a nice day friend
Doesn't matter which you choose. The calibration just needs to see the drone rotate through it's horizontal and vertical axis to set the compass. It takes about a minute to complete.
Actually, the IMU has a gyro to control the yaw by modulate the torque on those motors to keep the drone stable in Z axis, and to turn the drone when you give a rudder command.
Hey, Rick...I have P4P and M2P that I fly with a Crystal Sky Ultra. I bought a Mavic Mini and want to get DJI Fly app onto the Crystal Sky. I have the OTG adapter to connect it to the RC. Any idea where I might find apk file for the app to sideload onto the Crystal Sky?? Thanks for your great, informative videos!!
Thanks for the post and I'm working on it and should have an update soon. The version of Android that DJI has loaded on the Crystalsky is missing a few key drivers and I'm getting a series of error messages when the app loads that I'm trying to sort out. As soon as I have it figured out, I'll post a clip letting you know what I found. Good luck!
One thing I noticed setting up IMU with mini/ mini 2 is when you put the drone to the side it drops inwards a bit , should we allow it to be that way it have to hold it 90 degree to the surface for side calibration ?
No worries, you're essentially rotating the drone body through both a horizontal and vertical plane to help it calibrate. If it's off a little, the drone will make you spin it a little longer to compensate. It's wicked smart and you should only need to do this calibration if you travel a long distance between flights. Thanks for the post.
Did they change the compass calibrate procedure since the mavic pro? For the pro, first you'd hold it level and rotate it 360 or more. Then you'd point nose down, keep nose down, and rotate it 360 or more.
I actually just downloaded the manual for the mini, and answered my own question. It is same process as mavic pro. you point nose down, and rotate while keeping nose down. although the photo they display shows nose up. Lol
The calibration procedure that Rick does is different from the one that I do with all my other drones. I don’t see anyone else suggesting this calibration method with the Mavic mini. I need to know if it makes a difference which calibration method you use?
Not sure but the one Rick shows in this video is not how it is shown in the mavic mini owner manual. I would stick to the way they show in the manual. DJI would not steer us wrong in their own user manual. :)
Hello Drone Valley Love my Mavic Mini drone. After performing a Settings Reset on my iPhone 12 Pro Max for a different issue, and after using it without any issues prior to the Settings Reset, the Mavic Mini’s Orientation Display ( the arrow with the dot in the bottom middle of the phone screen) is missing. I have done the IMU and Compass calibrations as supposed and As I have always done, I have made sure my location settings on my iPhone are on, also I have made sure my iPhone’s compass is calibrated as well but the issue of the Orientation Display being missing or not showing on my iPhone’s screen is still happening... Any suggestions? Is there any way I can factory reset this drone? If it can be done, that is? Or any other suggestions? I will really appreciate your help with this matter because it’s a pretty awesome way for me not to loose my drone... Thank you for your great and well done videos... Btw, Happy new year and stay safe out there Drone Valley!!!
Thanks for the post and it sounds like you have an issue with the application. I'm sure the drone and controller are OK so try deleting and reinstalling the application to see if that fixes it. If not, delete it and download it again from the DJI site (the latest version) and see if that helps. Good luck and let me know how you make out. Rick
@@Dronevalley Thank you for taking ur time to reply. I just found out that the DJI Fly app was updated two days ago to 1.2.2 and now the orientation display is at the bottom left of the display. They added the one used on DJI Go 4.0 and now it’s not at the center as it was before... I went crazy thinking it was due to the settings reset I did to my iPhone 12 Pro Max because it was giving me issues with the Apple Pay feature. But again, thank you very much for your awesome videos, and also for replying to my question. Stay safe out there DValley!
are you sure about holding drone UP for calibration? Always before I held drone in normal flying position and then rotated 360 degrees horizontally. Then pointed drone with camera UP and spun it horizontally, too. SO is the Mini different than the Mavic 2 Pro calibration? Also Billy Kyle does not demonstrate compass calibration like you did.
I am with Concerning Drones here. The only official DJI video on their website describes the process as HOLDING the drone horizontal (right side up) and rotating 360 degrees (he does it ccw.) Theh he HOLDS it vertically (nose pointing down) and again rotates 360 (ccw). Granted, it is an old video, but I sincerely doubt that they have changed their terminology. BTW there appears to be no user manual available yet for consultation.
Lauren, thanks for the post and I haven't grabbed the new firmware yet and will download it tomorrow. Both the folded and open legs result in the same calibration. The procedure is really measuring the difference between the initial reading and the others to set the range of motion.
Hi, when I started the IMU calibration by setting the aircraft exactly as instructed & then pressed START, the screen advanced and displayed the aircraft in exact position as instructed. But then the screen did not advance, just stayed locked. Please advise, thanks.
As long as you don't have any errors you should be fine. If you're really concerned, you can do a compass update before you start flying just to make sure the compass is set. Thanks for the post and stop back soon for more content. Rick
Just curious how is the editing software that's included on the dji fly app...i am new to drones and really haven't seen many videos on the editing software
Hi! Luv your videos. So no calibration is needed, for the first outdoor flight, unless the system is asking for one? Also, with no calibration needed, there won’t be any problems with the RTH function? Thanks!
Dear Drone Valley, I just received my mini yesterday. I'm hoping not to have to recalibrate just because I travel across a metro area of 40 miles or so. Can you hone what you said in your video about this, please?
Hello Rick, Thanks again for another great instruction video about the Mavic Mini👍🙏I have a question about using the Ipad Mini4 with the Mavic Mini controller. Can you confitm this works? It’s not on the list of compatible device as far as I know. Thanks for all your efforts to give us information about using the new Mavic Mini. Greetings.
Thanks for posting and I was using the iPad Mini 4 this morning for a flight and it works fine with the Mavic Mini. The only thing that's a little wonky is that the DJI Fly app isn't coded for scaling so the menu system is a little compressed on the iPad. They may sort that out with future versions of the app but I like the additional screen real estate. Thanks and be sure to sub the channel. Rick
Thanks for the post and the arms being in or folded doesn't affect the calibration. Even if the table or surface is a little off you'll be fine. Like I mentioned in the clip, all of the measurements are based on the original one so as long as you're consistent you'll be fine. Thanks for the post. Rick
Hi Rick, I know this is an old video of yours with the 1st Gen Mini, but I am curious about something, and I did not see anyone else bring it up when I scanned the comments: Why does your “Compass Calibration” only show 2 directions to turn the drone? My Mini from day-one has 3 directions to turn the drone (as do my older Yuneec Breeze, that I had for years, and my new Mini2). Is that something that changed (from 2 to 3 directions) after you got your Mini or is it an error you made when you “filmed” thus video 😆
Hello Rick, thanks for looking out for those new pilots. I believe there are going to be alot of them , with this mini. I have been thinking of starting a channel. I don't have a good camera yet, but I do have a good phone and the osmo-mobile 3. Mike in N.C.
Billy Kyle shows his video to do this and his app shows legs closed for IMU?? Did DJI change the app to show different way now for IMU or doesn't matter if legs open or closed??
Thanks for the post and I was following the instructions in the Beta version of the DJI Fly app I was using but it doesn't really matter. The way the IMU calibration works is that it takes the first position as "home" and when you move it (arms open or closed) it marks the travel at 90 degrees and 180 degrees for the quad. If you ever do it wrong, the calibration will fail and tell you to start over. It's a very smart drone. Thanks for stopping by and be sure to check back this week for more content. Rick
No, you need to remove the cover so the gimbal can move around during power up for it's initial position testing. If you leave the cover on, you could damage the sensitive gimbal motors so be sure to remove it whenever you power up the drone. I have a few more clips posting this week so be sure to sub the channel to make sure you don't miss anything. Rick
Thanks for the post but you don't have to be exact with it's placement. The calibration is designed to find "relative" positions in reference to it's initial standing position of the desk. It needs to understand 90 degrees and 180 degrees in both the Pitch and roll positions so it can define it's range of travel. I've actually done this calibration in the field by simply holding the quad in my hands and it's worked well. If it's position is off by too much the calibration will fail and you can start over. Thanks again for the post and be sure to sub the channel so you don't miss anything. Rick
Is it OK to do the IMU calibration indoors? I know to do the compass calibration in the field away from metal and electrical instruments. To have the drone facing to the left is a bit ambiguous? I'm in Australia so your left is my right or not? Why left?
Russel, you can so the IMU calibration indoors but not the compass. What you're doing with the IMU calibration is setting the vertical and horizontal "planes" for the quad so it flies level. The direction you spin is not really important as long as you consistent for both parts of the calibration. I hope that helps and happy flying!
So with most drones I've owned you have to do this from new before first flight ,will this mini need this ? Or will it fly straight from the box and only need this calibration now and again thanks
Take note: There is a bug in the Mavic mini firmware that might result in a fly away if your compass isn't working correctly. I have logged a case with DJI and they are looking at my flight log. I have also shared it with other people on the DJI forums. Basically the Mavic Mini heading was incorrect before take off and stayed locked in the wrong direction after take off, with no indication or warning given by the Mavic or the DJI Fly app. After take off the Mavic Mini stopped responding to any controller input, it accelerated to full power and flew away in a random direction. IMU, altitude, camera and GPS was working perfectly, yet the incorrect compass data totally screwed up the on-board flight controller and the Mavic was lost as a result of this.
the campus calibrate you show is different than what the campus calibration is shown on my dji p3 pro. I'm confused, I have had the p3 pro for several years and have always done it per the pro instructions. and it always works ok. did they change the calibration instructions for the mini. ?
Thanks for the post but the calibration is a little different between the various quads. The procedure I showed in the clip is correct for the Mavic Mini. You'll the same steps in the application when you walk through the procedure. Rick
thanks for the reply, but I think I will use the old reliable one I I used on my DJI p2,, p3, p3 pro,and maveric pro, and when it delivers to me the mavic mini. all very reliable drones . only problem I have ever had is I had a fly away, one of my p3 pro's (my fault, and it landed in the canal.) total loss. I bought another one, it is one of the best drones I've ever had.
Which is the right fly app? A type dji fly app a few pop up I downloaded the rainbow app but cant get on to level 2 so I've downloaded flight pilot but it dnt seem to work cld you tell me the correct app to use or show me the logo so I download the correct app as I've had my drone around 2 weeks now and still haven't been able to fly it yet due to picking the correct fly app for it thanks
@@andyinglis8687 Andy, the app is called DJI Fly and it had the DJI logo on it with a grey background. Here's a link to the DJI site where you can grab both the Apple and Android - www.dji.com/mavic-mini/downloads
Think a have it I scanned the iOS code and got the one for android just setting it up now as I've been die.n to fly this from day it arrived hopefully to day will be my first flight thanks
I've been flying for 3 years and I was looking for a compass calibration video to send to a friend and brand new flyer in a group im in and I watched your video on it to make sure he'd be able to understand it and i found out by watching that ive been doing it wrong all this time or you did it wrong cuz my calibrations always work the way i understand it to be but for sure I don't do it like you did it in this video. I do it exactly how it shows in the tutorial. For one you said to spin it 2 or 3 rotations but it only tells you to do it 360° which is one rotation. Other than that you spin it completly different than it shows me on my tutorial. Is there more than one wag to do this cuz now im evdn confused
Thomas, there is more than one way to do it and I was following the directions on the application I was using at that time. I had the quad early before release and was using a Beta version of the DJI Fly app, which had diagrams that were changed for the final release. Either way, what you;re essentially doing with the compass calibration is letting the internal (digital) compass find North on both of the axis. You need to spin it vertically a few times until it can confirm North and then spin it vertically for it to do the same. Once it gets a sense of the direction in both planes, it will let you know you're good to go. The one mistake I see people making, which can affect the quad is to hold it at arms length and spin. This puts the rotation point 3 or more feet away from the quad and even though it seems like it will work, your compass will be off by a lot. Spin it tight and you'll be fine. I hope that helps and thanks for the post. Rick
The onscreen instructions show it being moved about while folded up. I wonder if that is the reason the IMU calibration has failed three times? I am getting tired of all the glitches encountered and so far it hasn't flown in hours of working on it. Turning off the drone I have to pull the battery. Registration was a pain. What next. Maybe DJI has a good help desk. If not, its going back.
Rick could you help a drone fan I just bought the mavic mini and was told to type dji fly app but there's around ten app.s pop up and some are just for photography apps which app logo is the fly app for the mini I'm waiting your video to calabrate it but need to know correct fly app so I can fly it to day as I only got it yesterday any help would be appreciated guys help?
Andy, you need the DJI Fly application for the drone. If you go to the DJI.com website and click "downloads" you'll see the logo and I think they have a QR code you can scan to get the app as well.
Not finding the app in google play store. Looked for a long time all throughout the day with no luck. Found it on iphone, no problem. The only video that i could find on this issue said to go to the play store dji go 4 app download page and scroll down to other dji apps and it should be there...Nope. Every other dji app comes up, just not the fly app...? What the hell...? Can dji make anything easy? I searched on 4 different android devices with no luck.Waiting on mine from DJI! Cant wait!
If you're getting a compass error every time you go out to fly, that's unusual. The only thing I can think of that would cause that is if you're flying in an area with a lot of magnetic interference or you have a lot of metal around the quad when you power up. Try taking the quad to an open field, take off your watch and leave your phone and controller far away from you and power up the quad to see if that helps. if it does, there's something close to the quad on power-up that is messing with the compass.
@@Dronevalley I have a similar issue with my Mavic Air. I guess I have to calibrate maybe half the time. I wonder if this design is more sensitive to mag interference. My Phantoms only ever got their compasses calibrated once. In fact, I gave my son my original P4 which he proceeded to take to Australia (from Ohio). He has flown it over areas in NSW, Vic and Tazmania without a hiccough.
There are conflicting calibration techniques coming out today...check out Billy Kyle's website...good to get on the same page with this...cheers, and thanks for all your work...
John, I know Billy, he's a great guy and we are actually both right since there are a few ways to complete the calibration. I was following the procedure in the Beta version of the app and honestly as long as you rotate the quad through both the horizontal and vertical axis the compass will calibrate. Thanks for the post and be sure to stop back soon.
When calibrating the IMU on my mavic mini, it asks me to lay it on both sides. It lays perfectly flat/parallel to the table on one side, but slightly angled on the other side. Is this normal? If not, should I be holding it parallel on the angled side so it calibrates correctly?
Hello sir, My Mavic mini not pairing with Transmitter. continuous yellow light blinking. tried via mobile app after 60 sec's showing aircraft not found.
The Mavic Mini user manual is now available for download from DJI. IT CLEARS UP ANY DOUBT IN THE PROPER METHOD OF CALIBRATING THE COMPASS. The drone is held horizontally (normal upright position) and is rotated horizontally around this axis for 360 degrees. Then the drone is oriented vertically (nose down) and then rotated 360 degrees. The manual is here: www.dji.com/mavic-mini/downloads?pbc=D3IDBfR5&pm=custom
Great video. Thank you for those tips. What are the odds for a mavic mini to get on an the market without being calibrated from the factory? Ps: I am waiting for my Mavic Mini to arrive :)
Every time I do the IMU calibration in my mavic mini its different it shows me to do it with the propellers closed and that app that your using is not the mavic mini it looks like the spark that's why its showing you different ways how to calibrate it but please use the right app that goes to the drone cuz I was very confused because the app was showing me a different way than the way you showing every body, I was doing it your way but it was wrong I had to re do it again but the way how the app showed me the right way with the right app. But don't get me wrong because you can still calibrate it like that but by watching the app is not the way your showing so it will confused the people like how i got confused 😐.
A compass needle is more sensitive to weakly magnetic materials. A mineral that is too faintly magnetic to be felt may still be observed to deflect a compass needle. Iron and steel will be attracted by a magnet. These metals will also deflect a compass needle, but metals such as aluminum and copper won't.
dji support replied to my video: "DJI Support 6 hours ago Hi there, just to clarify, the exact way to initiate compass calibration is different, as the app's interface changed, the procedure to calibrate the compass on Mavic Mini is the SAME as other DJI drones, " you were wrong in what you demonstrated.
Thanks for the post and while I appreciate the follow-up, I was demonstrating the process they illustrated in the Beta version of the application, which was changed (both graphics and process) for the released version that came out on 11/11. Having said that, the process is super simple and is still valid. Essentially it only only requires the quad to find magnetic north twice in both the horizontal and vertical rotations to complete. The order and actual position of the drone while you rotate it is not critical. Spin it twice on its horizontal axis and twice on its vertical axis and you're all set.
@@Dronevalley thanks for responding. Your original video was unlike any compass calibration I had ever seen with the dji mavic line. But I now understand since you were going by the beta version.
Peter, thanks for the post and I've been an electrical engineer for the last 40 years and just love diving into the tech. I'll have more clips posting soon so be sure to stop back. Rick
Thanks for the post and I would recommend doing both calibrations when the drone arrives and you should be set with the IMU calibration from then on. The compass one you might want to do if you move around a lot between flights, just to make sure it's accurate. I hope that helps and be sure to sub the channel so you don't miss anything. Rick
Yep, I wanted to make sure I covered all the major topics and questions for new fliers since I got the quad early. I will be moving into other topics next week with quads and other high-tech gear. Stay tuned and I will have a few more Mavic Mini clips as well. Rick
Rick, you will get me to buy the MM drone, fast 😁... and I want to give a margin for error rectification, and system hits and hope to be included in the flight themes the follow me 😉👍🚁
Mike, they actually used both the Mavic air and the Mavic 2 graphics as place holders. I was using a Beta version of the app and I'm sure they will change that with the official one being released tomorrow. Stay tuned and I'll have more content posting soon. Rick
I'm confused with the comment. This clip is entirely devoted to showing you how to calibrate the drone and I go through the process step-by-step. There is no way to do the calibration reliably without the phone attached. You need that to start the calibration through the application and monitor its progress. The tags were accurate and I hope the clip was helpful. Rick
John, thanks for the post but the clips I do include some of the science behind the tech and folks seem to enjoy that. The clips get pretty boring for folks (and me) if they are nothing more than a dry, step-by-step procedure. Honestly, the manuals have all of that information in them as well. I love the tech and am endlessly curious about how things work and want to build that into my clips. I hope that helps explain things and I did put a time-code in the comments if you just want to skip to the process. Thanks for stopping by and I hope you'll stop back soon. Rick
@@Dronevalley That was quick! Just finished watching it. I missed the time-code references. My first flight instructor was an electronics engineer in his day job and he was a "how the watch was made" kinda guy. Sometimes it drove me (and other students of his) kinda nuts. So I may be a tad over sensitive.
No worries, I put these together as I'd like to watch them and include details I find interesting in the hope that others will as well. I always feel that the more you know about a piece of tech, the more you'll enjoy it. Stop back soon for more content I'll be posting. Rick
I only calibrate my drone if it has a 8 or more gps lock then it starts drifting or moving in circles when hovering.. That's the only thin I calibrate the compass, I never calibrated for a year even I change location 150 or 200km, more than that then I do a compass calibration.. And always take note, do not calibrate if you got a message "Warning Interference, GPS weak or Compass error" It has nothing to do with calibration.. Just think logic, what makes you think it will be fine to do a calibration if you already know that there's an interference that the apps told you? you're going to make it more worst if you try to calibrate it.. The best thing you could do is Avoid that location and change spot to fly..
Thanks for the post but you're mixing up two totally different technologies. GPS is a satellite positioning system that provides a location in 3D space for the drone to navigate. The compass is based on magnetic north and helps to keep the drone stable and navigating. You have no calibration control over the GPS, it just works. With the compass, you will have to calibrate it every so often. I never said to calibrate it every time you fly but if you've moved more than 50-100 miles from your last flight, it's a good idea to calibrate it since your position relative to magnetic North has changed. Lastly, nothing "interferes" with the compass except metal and only when you're close to a surface. If you're getting a compass warning, move the drone to another spot to takeoff.
I have been flying for a while with my Mavic Pro but this is a great review. What I like about your clips is that you are concise, clear and accurate. There is no background music or annoying graphics. Thank you.
I ABSOLUTELY AGREE WITH EVERY WORD. Rick, you've nailed the way a video should be produced/recorded. Brilliant. Thank you.
Agreed!

I've yet to get a drone, but I am looking at the DJI Mini as a first timer. However, I've seen a lot of YT videos when they mention about, "You may need to calibrate your compass".
And I've always though, "Hmmm... Seems more hassle than it's worth!"
And you've just explained it in such a simple and concise way, that I can move these calibrations out of the "Why I shouldn't buy a drone" list.
Great video Rick...answer another question please. After doing a "quick shot"...how do I exit the "quick shot" mode... please and thanks.
Good video. First time I saw someone doing the calibration dance with their mini I lost it . It's nice to see someone that knows how to do the calibration correctly.
As usual Rick, you explain in an easy to understand way the concepts needed to operate and fly the Mavic Mini. Well done!
I love this channel for info but not many repsonses from him directly...maybe too busy but I will stay subscribed!!!!
I was wondering if there was a calibration for the mavic mini. Thanks for posting 👍
That's good information Rick I hope the new users are really paying attention I wish I would have had that information when I first started thanks again for your videos
I down loaded the calibration procedure for the mavic pro and I was right according to that procedure and you are calibrating wrong, either that or they have changed the procedure, ok what is the correct procedure for the mini ?
was thinking the same thing. The way DJI says to do it in the manual for the Mini is not the way demonstrated
agreed
It works either way... It’s even easier to do it the way DValley shows because DJI’s way can mess up the can if we aren’t careful... So if it works, why not!????
excellent vid....answered my question..thanks
Great presentation as always !
From one former Boy Scout to another, Thank You for your highly informative and spot on videos! ;-) I love everything about your channel.
Andy, thanks so much for the post and it was a long time ago with the Scouts but some of those lessons stick with you. I'm glad you're enjoying the channel and hope to see you back here soon. Rick
Very helpful information. Thanks..
Great video Rick! Going to share it with our readers.
Another very useful tutorial, thanks. What exactly does IMU stand for, Internal Memory Unit?
IMU is the Inertia Measurement Unit and is a digital Gyroscope and accelerometer. A very important function for keeping the quad flying level.
@@markuschelios6891 thanks lol it took so long for someone to actually read this mine already got here and I've flew it multiple times
Rick
This video is incredible
the way you show to calibrate the compass is not how DJI says to do it in the manual
Dito! Maybe he is trying to show us as we are looking at it from top view! LOL
Teez Monkey Gaming
- I need to find out where I can download the manual for the Mavic Mini.
He’s simply showing us an easier and more careful way to calibrate. He even said it, that doing it it as supposed has made him mess up a few of those fragile humbled cams. So if it works, then why not?????
The compass calibration isn’t that way on my DJI Fly App
Ya.... it shows you to have the drone folded as well like it came out of the box for the MINI 2 anyways. Don't know if its an APP thing or DRONE.
I don't know but I calibrated it likes how it shows me how the app shows me and is not like that 🤔 😒..
Hi from Canada, can we have a brief view of the option on control screen (ipad, iphone , ect) the option we got with the mavic mini compare to a other DJI drone exemple follow me ect..love work, thanks you for alls those info. realy help, have a nice day friend
Thanks and I'm working on a few more clips for the Mavic Mini this week so be sure to stay tuned for those. Rick
Awesome, really useful for newbies
Appreciated to your efforts and sharing
Thank You
I am getting a compass calibration required while in flight just for a second. What do I do? Do I need to bring it home and calibrate compass?
Pls can you tell me if you can save your pictures direct fro. Mavic mini to phone while flying
Other video's I have watched the calabrate the drone with the arms unfolded which way is best open them or leave them closed?
Hi how do you create and download a logo for a you tube channel?
Hello Drone Valley
Love my Mavic Mini drone.
Great video as usual Rick but with the new firmware V1.00.20 the imu calibration displays the drone in its folded position.
Please advise, thanks.
mine did that as well s i had guards on
I have one question. If I want to fly this drone from a boat or raft, how do I calibrate it? Is it necessary?
As long as you don't have any errors you should be fine. If you're really concerned, you can do a compass update before you start flying just to make sure the compass is set. Thanks for the post and stop back soon for more content. Rick
Hi Rick, have you tried out the mini using the smart controller? Yes they are different frequencies but smart controller has wifi will it not connect?
Just curious how is the editing software that's included on the dji fly app...i am new to drones and really haven't seen many videos on the editing software
Do you need to compass calibration every time you fly?
Hi! Luv your videos. So no calibration is needed, for the first outdoor flight, unless the system is asking for one?
Also, with no calibration needed, there won’t be any problems with the RTH function?
Thanks!
If not do you have a video on doing the same thing on a Mavic air?
Awesome video... keep it up and I am glad we are nerds:)
Dear Drone Valley, I just received my mini yesterday. I'm hoping not to have to recalibrate just because I travel across a metro area of 40 miles or so. Can you hone what you said in your video about this, please?
Does the mini have geofencing?
Kirk Chase yes it does
Hello Rick, Thanks again for another great instruction video about the Mavic Mini👍🙏I have a question about using the Ipad Mini4 with the Mavic Mini controller.
Rick
Rick, Thanks for the quick answer. I subscribed to your channel!
Thanks, and be sure to watch for the 12 Days of Drone Valley Christmas giveaways!
Rick, I will watch Drone Valley Christmas giveaways! Thanks for mentioning it!
My mavic pro has you do it with the legs folded in. Also isn't it important that the table your using is level? So this one the arms are unfolded?
Thanks for the post and the arms being in or folded doesn't affect the calibration. Even if the table or surface is a little off you'll be fine. Like I mentioned in the clip, all of the measurements are based on the original one so as long as you're consistent you'll be fine. Thanks for the post. Rick
Another excellent video, very informative 👍
Roy, thanks for the post and I'm glad you enjoyed the clip. I have more coming along this week so be sure to sub and stop back.
Rick
Hello. Can I do compass calibration with gimbal cover on?
No, you need to remove the cover so the gimbal can move around during power up for it's initial position testing. If you leave the cover on, you could damage the sensitive gimbal motors so be sure to remove it whenever you power up the drone. I have a few more clips posting this week so be sure to sub the channel to make sure you don't miss anything. Rick
Thanks for the tips!
Quick question, when you put it on its back its not level... is that ok or doe this introduce some errors?
Thanks for the post but you don't have to be exact with it's placement. The calibration is designed to find "relative" positions in reference to it's initial standing position of the desk. It needs to understand 90 degrees and 180 degrees in both the Pitch and roll positions so it can define it's range of travel. I've actually done this calibration in the field by simply holding the quad in my hands and it's worked well. If it's position is off by too much the calibration will fail and you can start over. Thanks again for the post and be sure to sub the channel so you don't miss anything. Rick
@@Dronevalley Thanks for getting back to me. Good to know... still waiting for my Mini to arrive thanks!
@@Dronevalley Good stuff Thanks. Subbing.
Very good! Thank you!
Thanks for the post and I'm glad that you're enjoying the clips!
This just Happened to me.
What's the update or solution to this?
DJI will be replacing mine under warranty.
nice!
Many thanks Rick. 👍👌
Thanks for stopping by and your support! Rick
the campus calibrate you show is different than what the campus calibration is shown on my dji p3 pro.
I bought another one, it is one of the best drones I've ever had.
by the way Rick, I'm 87, life is good.
That's great! I love that you're out flying and enjoying the day. Stay tuned and let me know if you have any more questions for me.
Dose the controller need to be on during calabration?
Yes, you'll need the controller on and the app open to start the calibration.

Rick Great video as usual ! I have a question about the Mavic Mini, when filming video does it also capture the sound while you are flying along ?
Richard Smith No. All you would hear is the sound of the motors, and very loudly too.

Cant wait!
I have a Mavic Air and I have to calibrate the compass every time I fire it up. Is this normal?
@@Dronevalley Thanks for the clarification...thought it may be something like that...just a bit confusing for us beginners...
@@JohnBCarter No worries, I appreciate you watching the channel!
When calibrating the IMU on my mavic mini, it asks me to lay it on both sides. It lays perfectly flat/parallel to the table on one side, but slightly angled on the other side. Is this normal? If not, should I be holding it parallel on the angled side so it calibrates correctly?
Can you do the same thing with the Mavic air
Very helpful... thanks :)
So you dont need to do the compass calibration every single time you fly ?
Hello sir, My Mavic mini not pairing with Transmitter. continuous yellow light blinking. tried via mobile app after 60 sec's showing aircraft not found.
It shows the legs folded in mini the app graphic. Which is awkward with the props swinging around.
Love nerd talk. Thank you so much.
The manual is here:

your supposed to have all the arms folded in
If you look at his app it has the arm out

Great video. Thank you for those tips.
What are the odds for a mavic mini to get on an the market without being calibrated from the factory?
Ps: I am waiting for my Mavic Mini to arrive :)
Guys, i am having problem with IMU calibration, it takes 2 hours and still nothing, any ideas ?
You calibrate the compass completely different than anyone else on line. And differently than show in the DJI manual. How come?
dji support replied to my video:
"DJI Support

Hi there, just to clarify, the exact way to initiate compass calibration is different, as the app's interface changed, the procedure to calibrate the compass on Mavic Mini is the SAME as other DJI drones, "
you were wrong in what you demonstrated.
Hey rick, something off topic. Can I use my Crystal sky with the mini? I can't find that info anywhere!!
Are you an engineer? You sound like one. Thanks!!
Peter, thanks for the post and I've been an electrical engineer for the last 40 years and just love diving into the tech. I'll have more clips posting soon so be sure to stop back. Rick
Should you do the IMU and Compass calibrations before your first flight?
Thanks for the post and I would recommend doing both calibrations when the drone arrives and you should be set with the IMU calibration from then on. The compass one you might want to do if you move around a lot between flights, just to make sure it's accurate. I hope that helps and be sure to sub the channel so you don't miss anything. Rick
Nine Mavic Mini videos in a row... Time for a new topic!
Yep, I wanted to make sure I covered all the major topics and questions for new fliers since I got the quad early. I will be moving into other topics next week with quads and other high-tech gear. Stay tuned and I will have a few more Mavic Mini clips as well. Rick
@@Dronevalley I enjoy your videos. It's nice to see someone deliver information in an intelligent manner.
Rick, you will get me to buy the MM drone, fast 😁... and I want to give a margin for error rectification, and system hits and hope to be included in the flight themes the follow me 😉👍🚁
Looks like they used the picture of the Air instead of the Mini. Must be an early version of the app.
Mike, they actually used both the Mavic air and the Mavic 2 graphics as place holders. I was using a Beta version of the app and I'm sure they will change that with the official one being released tomorrow. Stay tuned and I'll have more content posting soon. Rick
Why so many commercial videos when searching for (DJI mini calibrate no phone).
They could at least be related to the search criteria... Tag abuse.
Rick
I really like your tutorials...but I don't really want to know how the watch is made to tell what time it is ;-)
John, thanks for the post but the clips I do include some of the science behind the tech and folks seem to enjoy that.
