Jimmy is the only dude with the guts to admit that a down tuned guitar is essentially a bass (and only needs four fricken strings!) Love how simple his rig is, man. NO B.S.
It's a real man's rig. When I saw them his main amp crapped out during soundcheck so his backup Randall was pulled out. There was no tweaking or anything, he was just like "does it work? cool" cranked up the gain and played a kickass show.
Except it's not. And he didn't say that. A bass has a 34" scale length and is an entire octave lower than a guitar. Not just down tuned one or two steps. An entire octave lower and down tuned are two completely different things. He said that his guitar is Bassey. He did not say his guitar is a bass. And he said he only plays four strings because he couldn't control the last two from feedbacking. Which what he probably meant was ringing out. He never said "a detuned guitar was a bass". You came up with that completely by yourself and put those words in his mouth. And you are 100 miles off from reality. Again. Bass guitars aren't down tuned. They are a 34" scale length which makes them an entire octave lower than a guitar. It's a completely different instrument. And is just as dumb as if you said a down tuned violin is a cello. There's absolutely no friggin way you play guitar. At least play it well and have any type of musical education.
@@worldssickestmedia2713 LOL...all true, except the last bit in which you try to insult me. I didn't mean to put words into his mouth, just reflecting on my thoughts that when a rhythm guitar is down-tuned low enough a bass becomes redundant. Also, I was actually trying to be funny, not serious. If comments like mine cause you to lose your shit, you should put some time and energy into therapy. Cheers
The children of the future need guys like Jimmy Bower. He plays simple stuff with simple, cheap gear and has his own thing, that people have tried to emulate for over 30 years. If you can get a sound you like, it doesn't matter how much your gear costs, or what brand your pedals are.
Right here, dude. I’m 19, playing through an Orange Crush 35RT with an Ibanez AX120 in B Standard and an Epiphone Les Paul in C Standard, and I’ll buy any pedal I think sounds good, regardless of what brand or how cheap. It’s worked pretty well so far, I even get tones that people say you need a tube amp and a 4x12 loaded with V30s for, all in a little 35 watt solid state with a single 10” VOTW speaker
@@joshuatyson1907I got one of those amps recently and it’s badass. I use a rat pedal and a behringer tube screamer on the clean channel as my main distortion. It’s a perfect bedroom amp for sludge/doom and even death metal.
@@tdaalien7820 Definitely, I’ll use the Metal Zone in the front or FX loop but I especially use it in the loop either pushed by my Soul Food or my Doomsaw depending on the kind of Death Metal, but I did manage to get one hell of a sound when I ran the MT-2 with a proper EQ setting for that gnarly Swedish grind and distortion at noon, run the Doomsaw on full, and push it with the Behringer SF300 (FZ-2 clone) on Mode 2 with all knobs at noon, and it was absolutely crazy.
“Met” Jimmy for a minute in a bathroom once. He pulled up to the urinal next to mine. I said oh shit, and then my bladder got shy and i couldn’t pee. Any way, he played a great show that night. Love me some Bower Power!!!
. . . Jimmy Bower! This is the BEST DTB. Love his attitude and love his music/guitar playing. A no BS dude. Chill and not a gear elitist. Thanks for this!
I met jimmy after a Down show in Libertyville IL in the parking lot waiting for load out. It was like we knew him for years! Such a humble down to earth person. I hope to bulld him a top shelf sonex one day!!
I've been listening to Crowbar for about 30 years and am a big fan. What definitely connects him and Kirk Windstein is that they are both lovely and humble people. I had already seen Jimmy, but I saw him reporting for the first time in this video. What a relaxed and cool guy❤
Jimmy's setup sounds amazing, I just saw EHG a few months ago without their rhythm guitar player and I ran up to the stage as Jimmy was packing up to see what all pedals he was using and he turned around and showed me that Ampeg, after having just heard them play a set, I was truly amazed. I've seen him with the Randall too, it sounds almost identical and just killer, nothing but killin' tones. Jimmy is truly the man.
I was fortunate enough to meet Jimmy when he was touring with Crowbar on the 'Broken Glass' tour. I think it was 1997? I remember him being very cool and laid back, for sure. Thanks for this video.
0:15 A Complete little stealthy Doommetal Guitar just as i love them i also have a rare over looked Gibson called LES PAUL STANDER DOUBLE CUTAWAY - BLACK SEXY GOTHIC COLOR is like a beautiful marriage of a SG + LP and it does has those Devil Horns that commands IommiLord Respect
Have two Sonex guitars (both 81s but one is currently in pieces and needs to be assembled) and I actually had no idea Jimmy played one when I was initially looking for mine.
I saw Down play the second stage at the Ozzfest. Then the next day i saw him play drums for Debris Inc., 10 people max were there. I was looking around confused. Then i saw him and said I just saw you play the Ozzfest in front of thousands of people. And now you're here playing to no one. WFT??? He told me , "I like jamming." Extremely down to earth dude...
Except the fact that i'm indeed an addicted fun since back in the day, their sound / music is not the only factor for my deep and loyal appreciation. What you said is!!! I want thAt from my musicians.. These are NO BS people with no "rockstar" vibez at the slightest. F@ck gimmicks man.. Just a bunch of dudes with pure love of playing music all together
I used to run 2 full stacks with 2 SS150H heads. People always asked how the hell I got such a killer tone. I'd say "I just plug into this shit and turn it on" some of the dudes that would ask me about it had all kinds of rack gear and processors....If it works for you, cool. I just never needed anything else really.
Jimmy jumped in the car with me and a few buddies of mine back in 2000, 2001? In Huntington, West Virginia. I remember we went for a ride in the hood looking for something that not be discussed on social media. However, ended up being a fun night and he’s, one of the chillest, coolest, nicest guys you could ever meet. No rockstar ego - very down to earth.
EHG played Sydney this past weekend. Jimmy had this same guitar into a polytune and then a BOSS SD1 into a Marshall JCM 800 and a Mesa Engineering 4X12. Whenever he stopped paying and was not muting the strings he was getting HUGE amounts of glorious feedback.

Phil Anselmo is on the record referring to Jimmy Bower as the Godfather of Southern Metal. Totally accurate. This man is a legend.

Dude…that Mesa is 1.8K in Europe. He is humble, but it is a privilege to have that cab
Jimmy is a really nice guy. I speak with the band members regularly and Im cooking for them next month. Ace person!

One of my favorite musicians. Cool as fuck!
This was one of the funniest, most down to earth videos about gear ever.
"it's really...wuuuu" hell yeah

Alright! Jimmy Bower! Bad ass. And they've also done a Kirk Windstein video that's awesome as well. Both beloved musicians in my opinion

DEATH METAL BANDS FROM 40's
Wow! Tone on zero..don’t think I’ve ever seen that before. Kinda makes sense for his tone tho I guess. Bless ya Jimmy. Nola godfather
I had an ampeg ss150 it was the shit
Soooo does he play the guitar like a tenor guitar or a bass? Im just wondering
A t-shirt of Hank Williams. S J W!!!
Yeah, he took off 2 high strings, turn tone to zero, and bassy tone it must be the wood...
