Ice buildup on World Trade Center TV mast

- WNBC-TV's CHOPPER 4 was sent to take a look at an icing condition at the top of World Trade Center's TV mast. Pictures are from winter 2000, and the cockpit chatter provides the audio for this footage. (PARENTAL ADVISORY:brief language ("Holy s***") @ 1:53) At WTC, WNBC-TV (channel 4) and WNYW-TV (channel 5) shared the top position on the mast, with both stations diplexed into a 2-bay batwing antenna, the RCA TF-2BM(S) 'superturnstile'. On this visit, the chopper found a good deal of ice on the north face of the antenna. Also included are shots of the 2-way radio antenna farm and other equipment on the deck of #1 World Trade Center. Lots of ice, which has fallen off the mast can be seen at the base of the mast. At the end, there's a brief look at the observation deck of WTC tower 2.

Look how high that light is! You've got to go 1,377 to the roof, then climb another 360 feet to reach the top just to change a light bulb! Geez, these people were absolutely nuts doing this then!!

To think a year from when this video was made nobody would be worrying about ice on the antenna anymore. 20 years later it still seems so unreal what happen to our beloved Twin Towers and all those who perished on that day and still to this day. RIP to all the victims of that horrible tragedy.
We're all still healing from being witnesses and dealing with the aftermath. This place is stuck in time never to be seen again. Thank goodness for the footage and hope you're doing well💜

At night, of course. Would have been much more visually engrossing if it happened at night.
@Colortiniz I live in England and back in 1969 ice built up on the TV mast near my house (Emley Moor) which caused the whole structure to collapse 'in short' RF radiation would not melt the ice. Really good, interesting filming by the way.
It was a great Job doing doing the maintenance on the antenna , I could just imagine having a Job like that. Its a privilege. The guy doing that Job had a great Job. I would love that Jpb

Technically, a Batwing antenna is inherently broadband. This allows two TV stations to share the same antenna. (Channel 4 = 66 to 72 MHz and channel 5 = 76 to 82 MHz)

Because the Twin Towers would had no longer fit the modern building codes. Alot of stuff with building codes changed after it collapsed. Had they returned, you would of been seeing something like the newer buildings, all glass panels. You can't just build the same, because it would have the same issues. Kind of like how ships were made to have life boats for everybody following Titanic.
Jetbolt see that would have been even worse than the freedom tower. What they needed to do was build a modern strong twin towers in the mold of the freedom tower, except make them square and put a facade of striated columns down each side so it looks like the original
@@TheLocalLt still possible. Two World trade center has yet to be built and there is a movement to get a twin of one world trade center which would result in a new generation version of the twin towers. It could still happen. Unlikely, but still. The two world trade center site is currently still sitting empty at the site.
@@eyeflaps one World Trade Center already defies my idea as it isn’t at all a replica of the original. What I’m saying is they should have built modern, stronger versions of the twin towers, but with the originals’ spaghetti box shape and external facade with the striated trident columns. Great tour of the rooftops and antenna farm, I've never seen them in such detail before. It's interesting that they kept the helipads even after the FAA decertified them. Does anyone know if they made regular use of them at some point? And aside from the rescue operation following the 93 bombing were there any further landings made?
Maybe used them to plant the thermite bombs used on 9/11
@@kemo2547 that's were your Brain must have been left too
I believe they actually put a load of debris of all kinds of the roof to stop anything being able to land on the roof in respect of an attack. This actually was part of the reason why they couldn’t land on their on 9/11 to pick anyone up, plus the smoke was making it very hard to get near it too. From what I’ve seen I don’t think anyone was able to get to the roof on that day anyway. I think the doors were securely locked to prevent anyone unauthorised getting to the roof.
@@DeadlyAura76 A group of people trapped above the impact floors in the North Tower proceeded to the top, but the door to the rooftop being locked as you said, they went back and waited for their fate in a conference room. That was one of the "contacts" whose call could be heard on live tv that day. I am certain that military helicopters would have been able to handle the rescue of those trapped on the higher floors from both rooftops, if only such an order had been given, regardless of the smoke. The fact no attempt was ever made is a bit disturbing to say the least. There should have been a system with a key behind a glass next to that door with an alarm going off when broken, it would have been secure and at the same time a sure way to save many lives in an emergency. I truly hope nobody gets away with leaving "debris" on skyscrapers' roofs anywhere, as these would obviously become serious hazards at such heights. I don't know that security was of such concern pre-9/11, and catastrophic situations in case of fire in higher floors such as this one should have had their helicopter rescue drills in place anyway.

Do you mean hated them when they were being built in the 60’s and finalized in the 70’s?
Because New Yorkers warmed to them and began to love them. They were as New York as any body before they fell. A permanent part of the skyline, if only eventually in spirit.

Quite similar to the Twin Towers is the US Steel Tower in Pittsburgh. Built at the same time the US Steel Tower used many of the same design features, the US Steel Tower was originally planned to be the world's tallest but eventually topped out at "only" 840 feet, 64 stories.
Looks like the US steel tower uses identical windows and spacing between the windows. Interesting.

Lyndon Edwards it wasnt installed until 1978
they did put it only in 1978
The North Tower having an antenna installed on the roof was a compromise made by the Port Authority of New York/ New Jersey. This was to prevent a joint lawsuit by The Big Three ( ABC, NBC, CBS ) was preparing against the Authority for having The Towers built so high. The TV networks rightly feared their height would block broadcasting signals around the Metropolitan area. So by 1977, a deal was reached to have a television antenna installed atop 1 WTC, allowing for the leasing of the signal to radio and TV networks crowding The Empire State Building at that time.🇵🇷🇺🇸🗽🦂😎
@@JoseMorales-lw5nt Thanks, very good information, I had no idea about that.
Funfact: the twin towers were built with a "hat truss" which could support the weight of a massive TV antenna. Both towers were fitted with the hat truss which means both towers could have eventually gotten antennas, although only the north tower (one world trade center) was fitted with one.
