Gavin your theory about Guts in the Black Swordsman arc was impressive, most people miss it. Berserk is a Manga that just punches you in the Guts with all sorts of emotions.
I'm so glad you're spending time to appreciate Miura's incredible artwork. The story of Guts and Griffith is legendary but Miura's artwork just elevates it so much.
Gut's surprise of the blade being in the wolf wasn't that it had moved on its own but that he'd moved it instinctively without thinking about it. It's that trope of the Hero drowning in hopelessness ready to give up and die but the body refuses to surrender to death an fights on regardless. "Survive, Fight on, Don't give up, We can keep going. This is not where we fall..."
Gavin you are the right person to read through the Beserk series because you are just so compassionate. You care about others and you try to understand other peoples motivations. Nobody else would do this series justice like you are. Love you 🧡
I'm so glad more booktubers are actually giving Berserk a chance if they can handle the delecate handle of dark themes in the way it does. While Malazan is on the same tier of darkness from what I'm *understanding* it sounds like they handle these topics vastly different. But mostly because they're telling to very different stories. Berserk is about the struggles of Humanity, Causality and Free will as well as the ugliness of it while Malazan touches on different themes, and plays with the idea of rebirth and recarnation in a different way. (Someone can correct me on Malazan though as I only know through watching Merphy's Video's and peices of Philip and Daniel's videos) On the surface a lot of people just assume Berserk is "Dark just to be dark", but it does actually touches on the unfortant reality of the human mind when pitted with horrific situations. And It's okay if you're not wanting a story that shows the reality of what surviors and victims go through in their mental state (and also prove that not all victims are "perfect victims") But I wish people would just respect the fact that it's just not for them and stop calling people who enjoy the story "degenerates" for actually resonating with the work. The fact that you're enjoying it has me pretty happy that you do see the beauty in the work and that it's not just trying to be edgy. As a senine it's suppose to be written for adults (Senines are for Adult males realisticly but any gender can read Berserk and resonate with it), and people don't seem to realize this. Berserk is one of the insperations that lingered with me for years while I was growing up. It also compelled me to write a story with similar themes of the struggles of Humanity and what light can be shown through in the ugliness of mankind.
I dare anyone to call me a degenerate for enjoying Berserk, they’ll never show their face in my comments again let me tell you 😂 sucks that there are people out there who do criticise Berserk fans. They just don’t understand.
@@GavinReadsItAll They really don't. Those are the same people who would look at something being depicted in a book about SA victims and say how that charater responded "That's not how an SA Victim will be like!" When it's far more complicated than black and white (Deerskin is a book I've seen people critizied that exact argument, when I personally relate to the charater's reactions). Berserk protrays those nuiances. It's not perfect in any way, (later chapers there may be points you may criquite, which is perfectly fine and understandable), but it's as much of a masterpeice because it does charater work so heavily well, and explores so much more than the surface of a situation. Eventually I'll personally will try Re:Zero again because I wasn't mentally ready to facing something that I personally dealt with, and Subaru really started out like people I personally knew and got hurt by. I'm told he gets better, but I think I have to personally work through my own thoughts to try again. Same with Land of The Lustruous. You would think I would enjoy those stories because I enjoy Crime and Punishment but I donno, it could be that I just needed to personally heal and look at those in a different light. And I think these reviews of Berserk and slowly working on Deerskin may have helped with that. I am curious When you're caught up with Berserk if you'll be watching other people's thoughts on key concepts and how they read the parts you've theorized on. That would be fun to see the comparisons.
@@Merdragoon This comment ^ is only an issue on Twitter and primarily in the US because most people I talk to (myself too) never run into problems like these.
@@Moody.Smiruai Believe it or not, I have seen some Booktubers saying they won't ever start reading Berserk due to it just being dark just to be edgy. I have also met people (streamers and outside the internet) Say the same thing just because of the first chapter. So this is through my own experiences that I say this. Yes. Twitter is the worse case of this, but I have seen pockets where it's happened outside it. Yes, other countries are more open to the concepts of Berserk. Also Goodreads is another place I've seen these arguments.
@@Merdragoon I feel that maybe they just dont like violence and R rated things from what you have just told me , but it could always just be overly sensitive folk with no critical lens as you say...
One of my favorite things about Berserk is that because this world and it’s characters are so brutal and unforgiving, when you eventually get those lighter moments you will appreciate them fiercely since they are so few and far between. Especially the ones that relate to Guts. Those moments had such a profound impact on me while reading that Berserk becomes something truly special.
4:00 that illustration is the reference from riding passed the gallows tree, the hanging corpses by Gustave Dore. For his dark medieval art, Miura was highly influenced by Gustave Dore.
So glad you're continuing this, the story really picks up and this arc will affect everything after it. We saw just a little glimpse in the Black Swordsman arc
I can absolutely understand the trepidation. There are stories I can binge and this isn't one of them. Though you making videos gives me another reason to push myself to read more.
58:20 - Something really important about this section that I don't think you mentioned is that Guts overhearing Griffith talking about how a friend is someone who has their own dream comes almost right after Guts just decided to dedicate himself to fighting for Griffith - "For now I'll weild my sword, for his sake." Guts basically had an epiphany about what to do with his life just for the person he respects above all others to say "anyone who does that is not my equal and I can't ever see them as friends". Griffith is definitely talking about Guts here, although I don't think he realises it, only Guts knows that he's exactly the kind of person Griffith is talking about.
I'm so happy to see one of my favourite book chanels getting a good read through berserk. Tough story but journey is really worth it, looking forwards to more updates !!
The light from outside getting darker and more sombre is quite appropriate for the material! Griffith has consistently been demonstrating the traits of a manipulative narcissist: charming one moment, cruel and self-serving the next.
Hey Gav! Great Berserk video! Thanks for continuing with uploading Berserk videos. I recommend checking out a ambience video by Ambient Cinematics called Meditating with Guts in Berserk. It has very calming music that would be good to listen to while reading Berserk.
I didn't expect a chapter-by-chapter Review, but it's great I think. Thank you for this Video though I haven't read Beserk yet, it's great for the fans and future me, when I read it!
I can't wait for your thoughts on this series. I discovered you through the One Piece read throughs, Berserk is for sure something different entirely that you can get within manga. hope to see more soon :)
@@GavinReadsItAll I might be in the minority, but I enjoy long format videos! I can pick it up, and put it down again where ever I want! Absolutely agree with your opening statement. Berserk is intimidating especially for the manga readers who used to read the Shonen rating titles. It is indeed very shocking and upsetting when we know about Guts origins. And making the readers understand why Guts act like an asshole in the black swordsman. But if your stomach can handle the gore, you'll experience the beauty within its brutal and unforgiving brutal world.
Alright now I have to finish Berserk. There no way I'm gonna let you get get ahead of me Gavin lol. If I wasn't so addicted to RUclips I'd be done 2 years ago. Lol.
It was wise of you to choose picking Berserk back up after Marineford. I feel that we'd be facing Emo Gavin if you'd been reading both at the same time
RUclips doesn't like nudity, so you are right in being careful and avoid showing explicit content. And sadly that's not limited to "violent" content, you should avoid showing any kind of nudity just to be safe.
For Berserk readers, is chapter 83 in the bound volumes? and if not are we going to have him read that chapter or no? I know there is some discussion about that among fans, and was curious as to what this community thinks about it 🤔 Love the content Gavin, keep it up, I really enjoy watching your reaction and perspective on both this story and also your One Piece videos
To be honest, now that I'm caught up with the series, I can say that Berserk at its core is actually a love story and arguably one of the most beautiful one I've ever read. And even tho the series is extremely gore heavy with grotesque demons, rapes, murders and what not, it still conveys the most human emotions a story can tell.
Beserk never interested me because it is too dark and gorey for me but when you grace us with a feature film length video, I must do my duty and watch lol
I love the chapter by chapter format.
I’m glad it doesn’t put you off! Thanks for watching 😊

Despite short chapters, it still takes some time to get through to appreciate the details. I’m so glad Berserk exists
