What's amazing about this is that the claque in the audience who were against Corelli because he came from Ancona .were actually throwing cabbages at him.. It was the "custom." Actually when I sung on the stage of San Carlo I deserved to have cabbages chucked at me. BUT that's another story. Here we seeing two of the greatest operatic singers of the 20th century.
Now that I said what I think of Corelli here, I will comment on the great, incomparable, unforgettable Bastianini! His voice is certainly the most beautiful, rich, dark, velvety voice I heard from a baritone in my entire life! And the fact that he was a bass before gives that special weight and darkness to his lower register. Apart from that, he acts convincingly, just as thrillingly as Corelli, and I think his singing itself reflects pretty well the character he is portraying!
I had heard that it was Giulietta Simionato who stated that if black velvet had a sound, it would be the voice of Ettore Bastianini. I've always loved that description.
@@jphubert You will not even find one single italian baritone anymore who is comparable to the rich voices like Bastianini, Taddei, Protti, Panerai, Sereni, Guelfi, Gobbi and many more...The same with german Heldentenors...What happened?
@@WolfgangAPalm-ju9er I think it is multifactorial. First, wireless microphones can now be attached to every major cast member. They have no need to develop a voice that will carry throughout the house. Second, for the past several decades and perhaps even longer, what was once thought of as outstanding opera singing (almost a controlled, yet highly resonant/focused yell in a certain sense) has been demonized as in-artful and almost vulgar by major music programs at the university/conservatory level, all to the detriment of producing credible opera singers (comparable to the great artists of the 20th century). Students are now told by voice teachers/coaches not to sing loudly or to develop an effective "chest voice" unless base-baritone or contralto. This virtually eliminates the possibility of producing a dramatic tenor. Third, we must accept that the social/cultural developments of the past several decades has produced a kind of affect in males that is incompatible with virile/highly masculine singing. Note that in popular music, males and females sing virtually in the same octave, men too high and women too low. All the pop females sing in an alto range, the males as high tenors or countertenors. This was not the case prior to 1970. These developments no doubt had an effect on the classical world as well. Fourth, as a result of these and other factors, the art of opera singing in the Italian mode of the 19th and 20th centuries has in large part been lost. Neither singers or teachers know or care how to emulate the superb artists of the past. This has led to mediocrity vocally and the prominence of physically attractive (especially females) singers being featured who in the past would not have been part of major companies. Admittedly, these are only my opinions, although arrived at after much consternation, analysis and decades of interest in opera. I'm sure there must be other reasons as well.
Thank the Lord that this video exists .. just to show the young singers of today (especially in the UK) what 'grown up' opera singing was and is all about .. Along with Merrill and Tucker, these two were the greatest ...!! John Rawnsley
My opinion is that he was an extremely convincing actor, who both acted and sang with true passion and deep understanding of the character! I am not saying he didn't have the terrible stage fright, because we all know he did, but that didn't prevent him to be both a marvellous singer and actor, and he didn't only act with his gestures on stage, he acted equally powerfully, thrillingly and convincingly with his unique voice!

Verdi was a bel canto composer. These two were masters at the legato and vocal colouring demanded by Verdi's music. Not to mention the vocal expression of high drama, all within the context of "beautiful singing". That they excelled at verismo as well is a bonus.
