Bounces & bumps as trial drivers tackle notorious ‘Crooked Mustard’ hill in Gloucestershire

- Drivers from across the UK took part in the annual Cotswold Clouds car trial today (February 5) - which included the notorious s-shaped ‘Crooked Mustard’ stage - a slippery, muddy, twisting uphill trail. Around 80 cars from pre-war to modern took part in the event organised by The Stroud & District Motor Club, but only a handful completed the Crooked Mustard climb. The Gloucestershire-based event has been running since 1950.

It’s amazing, some people brought vintage cars, some people brought cars that look like they saw the brochure and said “I could do that”, and some people looked like they were just shitposting. But no matter what, nobody took it too seriously and it looks like everyone had fun.

@@liamgross7217 most likely not, it’s good to remember though that when those cars were new, the normal roads looked like this hill, if not worse. Fun video!
Genuinely surprised to see some of the older vintage models perform so well
Roads back then weren't as good as they are today, so the cars were designed to be somewhat off-road to begin with. Look at the excellent approach and departure angles (which you can't have nowadays due to needing to have bumpers and other safety features). They're also a lot lighter.

Not everything's a dick waving contest.
Figures a yank would be an expert on driving up a dirt hill.
It’s not always about who can get the gnarliest 4wd up the gnarliest climb. The whole point of this is to use stock 2wd cars with stock tyres to see how they go. It takes a lot of skill to throw those cars up there.
You can tell who even has a shot to make it by looking at the momentum they have going into the first banked turn. The ones coming in slow and then revving the snot out of it right before the bank never make it.

I live next to these woods - trust me with the steepness of the incline 4x4 wouldn't help greatly - this is why the ultra light trials cars do so well- what weight they do have is transferred to the rear wheels - by gravity!
From what I am reading in these comments it's intentional that there aren't any proper 4WD vehicles, sometimes its more fun to try and do something in the wrong type of vehicle
Indeed, using those tires, this is how they keep the local bicycle shops in business.
The entire point is to make this a competition of driver skill rather than car ability. Getting a well sorted 4x4 with huge off road tyres up these slopes isn't much of a challenge.
