Throttle Response Controllers - The real deal about Pedal Commander, Sprint Booster, SEC10, etc.

- In this video I discuss the controversial subject of throttle response controllers. Bottom line, I don’t care which one you pick if you decide to get one, I think they are a fun addition. There are many of them out there (Pedal Commander, Sprint Booster, SEC10, PedalBox, etc.) and they all do basically the same thing through regulating the voltage going to the PCM and Throttle Body. Which one you choose is up to you. I suggest doing your research and discussing with your tuner, if you have one, on what to get.
Also, these things are not power or torque adders. The are not designed to do that. They also do not interfere with the tuning, even if you have a custom tune.
My channel is dedicated to the 5.7 liter HEMI, though we touch on the 6.4 (392, Scat Pack, and Daytona) and Hellcat (both base and Redeye trims), continually adding modifications to get the most out of it. I try to bring content that is not only informative but hopefully entertaining. I do not want others making the same mistakes I did and hopefully save you some money in the end. I am dedicated to taking my 5.7 liter Hemi in its stock form as fast as it will possibly allow me. My current list of modifications is extensive but there is plenty more to come. If you are modifying your 5.7 Hemi, this is the channel to watch. I provide unbiased, I have no ties to any business or sponsors, opinion on options that I have purchased or have done extensive research on. Sit back, relax and enjoy the video.

Anyway I'm going to get a throttle controller after a bit more research. It seems most people love the one they bought and often trash the other brands. You're the first I've found who did a truly unbiased video. I was leaning toward the Pedal Commander but now don't think you need to pay $300 or have that big box as an interface to the performance modes. Now to figure out if the smaller no-name units like Speedform for $100 will do the job or spend $200 for the iDrive. A two or three button interface with small LED display should be enough and easier to mount. Thanks again for your video!
Ordered iDrives for my old RAV4 and 2019 Camry SE which doesn't come with built in ECO, Normal and Sport modes like the higher trim XSE. Couldn't get it ans an option either. Now I'll have it in both cars plus many more modes. That was one feature I really wanted in the SE but couldn't justify $4000 more for the XSE, which of course has lots more goodies than the built in drive modes. Now to hide the iDrive well so the dealership doesn't see it when I go for my 24 month service in November!
Sorry no Mopars here but in the late '70s I bought a 1964 1/2 Dodge Dart with the 273 V8 and factory Hurst 4 on the floor which came out to compete with the '64 1/2 Mustang. Of course not a Hemi but that little small block was darn good, a real sleeper. Until a Lincoln Continental ran a red light and whacked me. Actually, I took my tire iron and did a NASCAR pit stop sheet metal repair when the cop asked if we could drive enough to clear the intersection. I was even able to drive home while he had to be towed to the repair shop. His old Lincoln was beautiful but the wreck sure messed up both cars and both were written off as totaled by the insurance companies. Hard to straighten out a unibody.

I just bought a 2010 Camaro II SS that looked like it was owned by the Little old lady from Pasadena! absolutely mint W/87,000 miles and runs like new. I saved up for a muscle car while serving overseas......but it never happened. Just installed the Sprint Booster in my '14 Charger R/T. Removal of the pedal was unnecessary. I'm definitely happy with the new throttle mapping. Nice video thanks

I run the pedal commander on my 17 Challenger. I keep it cranked up all the way and turn it down to sport mode medium for snow. I also believe having the ZF the sprint booster might have been a better way to go than the pedal Commander due to the ability to switch between manual and automatic throttle response mapping.

These little devices do change the driving experience for sure. If you are modified and tuned though I don't think they are such a good thing, but if you are stock or lightly modified I think it's a great addition!
I use a pedal commander on my '12 R/T, works quite well to kill the lag issue. I'm hesitant to use the sport modes around town because I'd end up running someone over, LOL! I use mine in "city" mode 2 or 3, perfect setting.
My Diablo i3 tuner I use on my Chrysler 300C hemi has a throttle response setting in it, that also installs that parameter into the PCM itself with the tune. Seemed to work well on that car.

Do you have the automatic or manual transmission? I was just wondering because I kept getting used to each level and ended up topping her out and that's where she stays until snow. You also might be running more power than me though I'm still stock. Actually if I remember correctly I'm positive you're running more power than me
Never buy pedal commander it has alot of recalls where people cars wouldn't come to a stop and turn people's car and truck into limp mode and trigger engine lights i wouldn't trust those cheap made in China pedal commander there is one called pedal box is far better than both theres one where u can control it from your phone . Thought i throw this out there keep people safe

I got a sprint booster for my 13 rt and i really enjoy it. I keep it as high as it'll go. I might turn it down some and drive to see how much difference I feel if I like it. But so far I love it at its highest!
I really love the Sprint Booster. It does exactly what it's supposed to do and I have had 0 issues.

Sprint booster on my 6-series V8.After I year of use and no problems.Its night and day response.No horse power gains but you’ll feel like a bullet finally at the red light.Best plug and play next to the Volo P16(which I also have plugged in)

I was hoping the explanation was more than “it’s done by voltage” does it increase the voltage? Or is it lower resistance/higher quality wiring and equipment?
This is a great question and one that I asked a couple of the manufacturers. None really wanted to answer it; seems like an intellectual property issue for them.

The SB is the more reliable of the bunch. I have in my 300c and my 5.7 RT..makes a big difference on how the car feels and drives! Would highly recommend the product

I have a throttle controller what I notice is it works I got better throttle response but my car will only got to 90mph and no faster when I have the controller on off my car goes to 160mph I have a Jaguar XF 5.0 Supercharged with 650hp to the wheels does the controllers limit your max speed?
I’ve never really tried it. I uninstalled it when I got the ProCharger installed last October.
I've got a 2018 Challenger and I hate when I stomp the gas pedal there is that half-second delay before the power comes on. I've been looking at these devices and think that is what I need in order to eliminate that momentary lag. I understand that there is no power or torque gain. Thanks for the video.

Good video! Can u do a test for 0-100km/h? I saw 2 video testing show it is quicker half a second!!
I did do some testing, just not in the video. My times were relatively the same. You are not making anymore power just getting to it quicker. It is hard to launch with it because you just blow the tires off every time! They are a lot of fun though.

I don't think I had it last summer though I may have. Can't remember exactly when I bought it.
Can your gearbox and powerline take that quicker response without being over stressed?
I've never had an issue with it.

Can I have the pedal commander and a diablo tune but keep the pedal commander hooked up ?
Yes, you can. Even if you have a custom tune you can still run these devices.
@@ModernRedHemi with my understanding what i have been reading is a tune and using a pedal response device will cause issue conflicts a tune has already set the throttle and adding the response device conflicts with the tune settings
@@joe7528 I used mine all the time with my custom tune and never had an issue (I have the Sprint Booster). Pedal Commander has been having some issues but other than that I haven't heard any issues using them with a tune.
Why doesn't this set off odb codes? Like tps sensors? I'm interested in getting one for my mercedes
Well, too technical question for me but I know my Sprint Booster never set off any codes but I know some people with the Pedal Commander have had some serious issues. They work, 100% for what they claim. Increases throttle response and that's it. 😉

I already have a tune on my car and there's more throttle response. Would I get even more response adding this with the tune? Or is it redundant? Is it proven to go faster?
I have a tune with the throttle response increased as well and let me tell ya, these things take throttle response to the next level. Even with a tune. I haven't seen any data that they make you go faster and all the testing I have done has not produced faster times.

@@ysayahhelton6118 I've tried almost all of the settings on my Sprint Booster. Keep in mind, they don't add power or torque, just decreases the lag in throttle response. If you are going full throttle, full throttle is full throttle.

Have you had any issues with sprint?Pc worked good for 2 yrs now.Couple days ago started throwing codes.I reset everything but 2miles later same thing.I didnt touch it after setting.I think ill try the sprint.Seems like the sprint doesnt have the issues that pcommander has.I havent seen one video saying sprint has issues but pc has many videos where people are having trouble.
I haven't used it in quite a while but when I was using it I never had any issues at all. 😉

I uninstalled it not long after putting the ProCharger on. It still worked with the ProCharger though. Just felt like I didn't need it anymore. 😉

I never seen any improvement in 0-60 times but it feels faster and like it has more hp but it doesn't. 😉
Nice video but you would think with everything equal, you should drop about a half second off your e. t. because there's no delay assuming that there's no wheel spin on slicks.
In theory you would think that but it's just not the case. Bottom line, full throttle it full throttle is the way I look at it. The power still has to get to the ground.
A lot of people are saying these mess with the pcm and tricks what the vehicle is trying to put out air and fuel to match the throttle causing other components to fail or getting check engine lights. Is this anything you’ve dealt with
It's all really not true. It's all based on voltage and how fast the throttle sends it to the PCM. I have never ran into any of those issues.
I just put the chinese 9 drive in my 2.7 mt tacoma and damn im pretty impressed!

That’s a question I have. Is it worth it to spend $300 for one of the name brand ones or is it just as good to get a Chinese knockoff for $150??? I know I won’t get all the bells and whistles and will have 3 or so settings as opposed to 20 but the end result is the same basically. Your thoughts? Thanks.

I love the SB because the 1:1. PC just fakes it by giving you wayyy higher open throttle positions, which is dangerous.
Great point. I think that is why so many folks are having issues with PC.

thinking about doing this easy mod, but feel like it'll be one of those mods i'll end up taking off.. though i hate the lag driving around town and coming out of a stop light. i wouldnt spend no more than 50-60 on one though, not paying 100-300 for one.

Correct. They will not void the warranty as you can just disconnect them and it as if they were never there. They do not do anything with the PCM.

@@RucaMad I leave my pedal Commander connected and drop it into the dash under the steering column when I take it into the dealership. I also made sure retrieval is easy by using a ribbon with a slip knot around the coupling of the cable and controller, then the other end I tie a Half Hitch around one of the looms inside the dash. It sounds hard it's actually pretty easy. The sprint booster though it's controller can be completely removed but I believe you require it to be plugged back in to change settings. They also can save you money at the pump too
COBE has the pedal commander in his car I was surprised how it respond when you hit the throttle

With the faster throttle response, do you get quicker 0-60 times? I would think you would get to wide open throttle a little quicker. I know that it doesn't add horsepower or torque.
Surprisingly it doesn't seem to help that much. It does help in burning up the tires though!

My 1997 Chevy Silverado 350 short block was like that the guys who had it before my cousin did raced it I can say wire was super fast I would do a burnout every time I goosed it gotta 2016 Charger sxt and it lags like crazy wire is always best instant power

I really like the Sprint Booster as the controller is way smaller and easier to hide, let alone it blends in just to the right of the steering wheel. I have seen issues with the PC and I have had 0 with Sprint Booster.
They both do the same thing just gives you better throttle response... Like how noticeable is the throttle response
@@chrisc7706 I have a custom tune and this thing really turns up the throttle response. It is very noticeable, especially the higher you turn it up.

I complete disagree with statement that electicity is giving a lag. Electric current is fast enough to make it same or even better response like cable did. Problem is that ECM is getting this signal from pedal (there is simple and stupid potentiometer in the pedal) and can modify it to slow the throttle reponse, for example to achieve better mpg or less emmission. Therefore I wouldnt blame electricity, rather ECM programming for this lag. And in fact reprogramming ECM could give dame result as these modules you are talking about. Anyway thanks for nice video

I've seen 3 vids 2 sprint booster and 1 bms pedal tuner and they both shaved off of 0-60 times Sprint booster avg about half second faster to to 60 bms was .3 faster that's not bad at all bms is $180 bucks sprint booster $300 so I'd say BMS for the money is just as good maybe better but both work great
I haven't seen that in my testing of the Sprint Booster.

You can do a throttle relearn but you don't have to. 😉
Shouldn't this be a proven on the 1/8 mile track?
I'll look into doing a video on it at the track to see if there is a difference. Right now the tracks are so crowded the runs are limited.
Has anyone used it in a race, it seems like they would make the wheels spin a lot from a dig and have enough problems getting traction as it is lol
I have tried it at the track and it did not provide any better times than when it was off.
Yes, you roll the throttle like in any race or at the track, you will need to fine tune because the most aggressive mode literally opens instantly to the percentage that you step on the throttle.

"It won't add power" well technically if you're opening the throttle faster you are making more power no?
On the dyno the peak power won't be different but the power delivery in the beginning for sure would be higher

Yup. You got it!
IMHO it just electronically pushes the gas further than you. With it off you left the light at half throttle. With it ON you left the light essentially at full throttle even though your foot might have only been half pedal due to the device being turned on. The fact that it does nothing for 0-60 times says a lot. Also how long before you start to adapt to the extra sensitive pedal and no longer notice it. i.e. now leave the light with even less input from the pedal. Just trying to fully understand this device. Sorry if I seem like I'm hating on it.
It is a confusing device. It's not that it's pushing the pedal farther than you it's that the response from pushing the pedal to moving the throttle body is significantly shortened. You are correct, you do get used to it the longer you use it.
I think your totally correct, with less pedal movement you get higher output so the only time you gain is the time it takes your foot to move the bigger distance. the lag that the ecu creates you can never get rid of with those devices.
So if you stomp down the pedal down in a flash the car will response the same with or without the device.

It feels way more than it is. The time between a tune and the response is minimal. I've tested it. There is not much difference but sure feels that way.

@@lcarlosmoreno6436 yea they work!! I had a bms powerbox on my first 328i 09 stock 0-60 i was 6.8 6.9 bone stock.. Then i added high flow K&N air filter, high flow muffler with res delete, and the bms powerbox and was clocking 6.2-6.5 always under 6.5 after best was 6.2

It doesn't. It moves the throttle body faster, doesn't change the amount of air coming in.
BMS is claiming 8-10 hp gains from theirs.. I know they work and shave off time but I'd like to see one on a dyno to see if it's making any better actual power at all
Unless their product messes with the PCM I would beg to differ on a throttle controller adding power. I'd be skeptical.
@@ModernRedHemi yea they claim they do something with air to fuel ratio but yea I'm skeptical too I had the BMS power box tuner before they discontinued nit on my old bmw and it went under the hood wired up it was good it did pedal and a tad of performance tune. But if these do knock off a bit 0-60 that's all I want anyways

Tazer does unlock apps not already there but doesn't control throttle response at all. You have to get a throttle response controller to do that.

If you read the title, this is how they work not a comparison video.
Bro, you doing too much you don’t have to take any nuts or anything you just takeoff the little panel the little fiber panel is 2 little snap tabs. You pulled it down and remove that once you do that you can reach up in there and unplug the pedal commander, pedalbox, or whatever you have and plug in the plugs and that’s it and put it on and push tabs back, you don’t take the whole pedal off.

@@ModernRedHemi I’m glad you got rid of them bro, they cause a performance timing code in cold weather starts below 26 degrees on mopars . I had pedal box and got rid of it after this code kept coming up in computer 👍🏾
