Love the info you are sharing. Keep up the great work. Question for ya, and I may have missed it, but, do you go down one way and then back up the other way, on the opposite side of the stakes?

    Hello Farmer Dre.
Where can I get relatively small amounts of plant protection products (fungicides and insecticides) at still affordable prices?
    Thank you.
    Regards.

Couple of questions. What is the reason for hilling the rows? Is it because that is the way the plastic is applied? I am a no-till in how I generally approach things. Also, does the white plastic seem to work well? I guess the water permeable woven landscape ground cover fabric is too expensive to do that much , right? I would like something that could go from year to year. Also, would you say that field tomatoes produce less than high tunnel tomatoes? I figured they do, but just curious.

Sorry it’s late but I’ll try and answer what I can. Planting in raised beds is partially what helps warm the soil so we can plant early. You can lay flat beds with a slightly different machine but it is less effective and doesn’t give the most benefit. Black plastic helps block weeds as well as warm. White plastic has a black back to stop weeds but it will keep souls cooler. We use it for a few things. That could be to cool late season strawberries from the heat and we use it for late season plantings during hot summers. The woven fabrics are expensive but they also do not puncture with a transplanter so it defeats the purpose. Another thing to think about is disease. You want to remove anything that might harbor disease from plantings. Production is different for everyone. Yes high tunnel tomatoes produce slightly more, but field tomatoes are what most growers will use because it is easier and more effective. We plant close to 6 acres of tomatoes a year. That isn’t happening in a greenhouse or high tunnel.
