- The secret to growing amazing tomatoes is easy, starts with the fertilizer! The fertilizer program that I use here on our farm is fairly easy to keep in mind! I use a 55 barrel of water at a time!

I never realized how much physics and chemistry in addition to biology a modern-day farmer needs. Being a farmer is much more like being a plant physician than I ever imagined. Very impressive! 👍
You arent kidding, im currently in school and had to use one of the chemistry equations I learned to figure out how much fertilizer I needed for my tomatoes and bell peppers. Its way too easy to go under or over and ruin your crop by doing the math wrong
There is not any more incapable nutrients then sulfer and calcium.. Delute your Epsom salt in with the master blend NOT the calcium nitrate, other wise you will lock out nutrients.... Hope this helps.. Love the channel.

My garden is between zones 3-4. Usually can't set plants out till the end of May. I plant in woven plastic and put each plant in a Wall-of-Water Tepee. I've done this for several years and have had great success. After I remove the tepee's, I place next to each plant a milk jug filled with water for the rest of the summer.

You tips on never dropping below62 degrees is priceless. In the north east , box stores leave tomatoes outside and even some green houses do not heat. These starts never produce over the season. One year I used a wall of water to keep a tomato plant alive. It looked perfectly fine visually as compared to the other tomatoes. however it did not ever produce any tomatoes during the season.
thanks Dre! I wonder if a roll of hose and a couple bags of cast-machined fittings and #6 hose clamps would be a better way for you? HEY DRE! Have you tried cloning the suckers from the Bigdenas, etc? Have had great success with either cloning gel or powder, they take off in about two weeks, as many plants as you want.

Dropping below 42 degrees at night does not delay your harvest by one week. In Bradly county Arkansas it will often get below 42 degrees because they plant so early. Yet they always have tomatoes ready by early June. But will affect growth and flavor. imho

And just a tip if ya dont already know you can use an enzyme cleaner that is natural abd organic to clean your irrigation lines or use certsin microbes that will do the job for you , thats what i do every 2 weeks

Hello, could you make video about - how to fertillize field determinate tomatoes. Scheme, dossage and etc?
1,1,0.5 ratio. Masterblend and calcium nitrate at same amount. Magnesium sulfate at half the amount. So if you use 3 grams per gallon of Masterblend you will also use 3 grams per gallon of Calcium Nitrate and you will use 1.5 grams of magnesium sulfate. I'll make it even easier. 6 grams masterblend, 6 grams calcium nitrate and 3 grams magnesium sulfate. The ratio is always the same. Your PPM is what changes based on the size of your plants. You still use the same ratio but you might add more fertilizer per gallon as the plants get larger.
What size drip tape do you use and what are the emitter spacing? Also, where do you buy the fabric for your field tomatoes and strawberries?

Masterblend is a good fertilizer.
And your dosatron shoulda been hooked up to an inline mixer tank to be accurate, and also prob shoulda upgraded your pressure regulator and/or emitters to larger ones to make things quicker, but the way your doing it now is the way i been doing it as well and works fine just a bit more manual labor is all

You really wanna hit some numbers with those tomatoes? Look into crop steering. You can steer with RH, temp, irrigation. Any of those three or a single one. Maintain proper dry backs as well. Hit me up if you have more questions

Crop plants maintain a "rhizosphere", or a concentrated area of microbial activity close to the root. The rhizosphere is the most active part of the soil ecosystem because it is where the most readily available food is, and where peak nutrient and water cycling occurs. Microbial food is exuded by crop roots to attract and feed microbes that in turn provide nutrients (and other compounds) to the plant at the root-soil interface where the plants can take them up. Since living roots provide the easiest source of food for soil microbes, growing long lived roots that feed the foundation species of the soil food web as much as possible during the growing season should be a goal of farmers seeking a productive and profitable crop.
Roots associated with SWRT membranes have been shown to last all season long, contributing greatly to the improvement of soil quality because they have the nutrients and moisture they need.

I see here your using 4 ounces of Master Blend and your plants are still young in this video, I'm assuming its a daily watering so 1.75 lbs. week. In another video where your plants are full grown and full of large tomatoes you said your using a whopping 7 lbs a week of Master Blend. Thanks

How many bags of fertilizer you use per week
That's the exact formula most of us use for hydroponic gardening thanks to Bobby known as mhpgardener.
Big E, I have been really wanting to try hydroponics. So your saying that is the exact formula the hydroponic growers use per 55 gallons of water to continuously run through their systems for growing tomatoes? And do they use the same formula for other things like lettuce?
@@douggaskill553 Yes. We mix 12 grams of Master blend, 12 grams of Calcium Nitrate, and 6 grams of Epsom salts with 5 gallons of water. Multiply it by 10 to get 50 gallons of water, and 4 ounces of Master blend, 4 ounces of calcium, and 2 ounces of the Epsom salts. I use it for everything. Check out mhpgardener videos.

sounds like your familiar with this process, using this formula as your water source for hydroponics. could I ask your knowledge and help of the timing to use this in a garden with a drip system and ground tarp coverings with over tomatoes? does this fertilizer mix go on every day, every week, every watering, or how often? I don't want to over fertilize and burn the plants. I know Dre follows up with pure water after the fertilizer mix is pumped, but does the tomatoes get watering of pure water in between the applications of the fertilizer mix? a little direction would be very appreciated.

I have a couple of thoughts on the idea of doubling nitrogen, he is right that your plants can go in to decline but his solution is dead wrong, they are going to decline because the root system has stopped growing, this is caused by using too many nutrients that encourage auxin, especially nitrate and potassium, doubling the nitrate will actually make the problem worse. In order to keep the root system growing and keep the plant reproductive you need to fertilize for cytokinin production, this means pushing vegetative growth with calcium and ammonium instead of nitrate, also foliar applications of manganese and iron will massively boost your photosynthetic rate supplying the plant with far more energy.
Calcium nitrate is a waste of money as you are paying a lot of the calcium but the plant does not take it up effeciently, better to use some boron and calcium acetate and a different nitrogen source.
Doubling your nitrate will massively increase pest and disease and lower the sugar content of your fruit.

Have you ever considered fertilizers that aren't salt based, like compost or manure? Also are you concerned at all about salinization of the soil you're growing on?
It is necessary to sprinkle irrigate the soil in the off season to flush out the salts.
Rex H. He is a real commercial farmer, no time to play around like a regular home gardener who has a couple of pots with one tomato plant each.
@@redangrybird7564 you can definitely use organic methods and non-salt Fertilizers and get serious results. I would imagine if you controlled temperature with a greenhouse or tunnel, you can definitely get same or better results using organic methods.
In fact, if you do it properly, you would eventually lose the need to fertilize so regularly. Of course you still could, but it would be more optional than a necessity.
In my 5 gallon pot last season, despite terrible heat waves and limited space, I got a tomato plant to produce I'd say roughly 20lbs of tomatoes.
@@matthewkheyfets1309 Soil Science, Plant Science, Crop Science and similar are real SCIENCES, organic gardening is just guess work. How much Nitrogen, Calcium etc is in your compost? It's just a guess.
I myself grow tomatoes in pots, I love gardening and I use a combination of salts and "organic" stuff. Perhaps it helps me that I have a Master's degree in Agriculture from the Ontario Agricultural College, University of Guelph, Canada.
Organic is for weekend gardeners, commercial farmers have families and mortgages to pay.
@@redangrybird7564 I entirely disagree with you and your masters degree really doesn't say a whole lot because we know what most courses teach for agriculture and that's usually salt based Fertilizers to feed the plants. But the reality is that while homegardeners may be doing guesswork, the same is not true at all for organic farmers.
First of all, you absolutely don't have to guess anymore when it comes to agriculture with organics. We have so many different ways to measure. We have brix readings, we can test nutrition in the leaves, and the best is we can do a sap analysis, and we can do soil tests. So there isn't guess work anymore.
The best large scale farm operations done properly are organic farms.
Organic farms.produce more food per acre, it tastes way better, and the crops are far more nutritious. And these can all be measured and have been measured before. It's not really guess work anymore for large scale agriculture.
Yeah for me I don't really need a sap analysis for my small tomato plantations of maybe 17 plants. But on a blueberry farm, orchards, tomato farms, they easily have a reason to constantly do sap analysis and apply appropriate organic nutrition and foliar sprays.

Same exact rate always. Just lower PPM for smaller plants. Start at 400PPM and go from there. Ratio is always the same. 1, 1, 0.5 Masterblend, Calcium nitrate, magnesium sulfate.

For optimal results you should alter the N,K, Ca ratio`s in the run up to the bloom stage using a combination of Potassium Nitrate and Calcium nitrate. The single formulation is convenient and will work but it wont be optimal for all stages.
Can I use this for younger plants? Like seedlings ?
yes. Same ratio of 1.0 1.0 0.5 you adjust PPM based on size of plants. Use a PPM meter or an EC meter if you don't care about accuracy as much. I would start at 400PPM for a seedling and go from there.

The N is easy it's the P&K that are hard to find in high numbers ...the root & bloom...
Miller's Sol-U-Gro 12-48-8, and Crop Finisher 4-2-41+2%mg. Great products.
Mono Potassium Phosphate is very easy to find

Instructions on Masterblend package say to blend masterblend and MgS together first, then after fully dissolved mix CaN to complete the solution.
How often do you fertilize your tomatoes
Several have asked Dre this question but he hasn’t answered. The Masterblend website says use 1 quart every 1 or 2 weeks.

Any one think maybe thats a bit too much nitrogen for the toms.
The N is fine for toms, the amount of P in the masterblend is excessive for toms.
Hot water will dissolve the fertilizer better
A good quality fertilizer should fully dissolve in 20C / 68F water. If you need hot water you`ll likely find solids forming when it cools back down.

I hope you realize that you are mixing the components in the wrong order. You might want to read the directions if you mix the Epsom salt and calcium nitrate no wonder your system gets all plugged up. Set the Dosatron at 1:100 and mix your concentrate according to the label. Flush your system every few weeks if you must but you shouldn't need to. By the way anything below 54 degrees F tomatoes will go dormant but will recover much quicker than at 42. Please take care and stay safe..
