Lover's Concerto ~ the Slammin' Babes

The Slammin' Babes was a band we put together in the '90s that had dedicated players, a cast of characters with a basic core - me and Jean, alternating drummers Leo Adamian and Janelle Burdell, guitarist/singer Lynn Vidal; and Melanie Monsour, Nancy Vogl and Michaelle Goerlitz; also Annette Aguilar when she was in town - which produced a lot of cool stuff. In this case, it was an album that we did with Ferron, backing her on tracks we all loved as teenagers. We loved doing it! As, in this case, "Lovers Concerto" (done originally by the Toys).
Well we had an awful lot of fun, and as usual I had a Dat running to catch cool stuff in the process. As in this case, Jean, Leo and I did the basic: drums, bass, and electric guitar. Then I added a medium-sized shaker, which makes a dramatic difference when it enters just before the second verse. Jean's pumpin' along on bass, everyone's doing their thing. In the arrangement, I figured out a way to represent horn and string parts with our voices, which you'll hear clearly as the lead vocal is absent. It quite magical!
Right after the middle section, the shaker drops out abruptly as I didn't have the whole reference on that take - so I just popped in another one!
Main thing is, we had a blast and you can feel it. Lynn sang the backups with me and Jean, and did the counterpart in the middle section. And I added on the lyrics so you can sing along too! Honestly, we've always been attracted to this tune, partly because it's based on a classical piece. How pop is that? Taking elements from disparate songs and styles, and making them work. That's what I love about music.

p.s. At the top, after the intro I added a "Nashville guitar" sound with a second guitar ~ with lighter strings that make the guitar sound airy and tinkly in a sweet way.. You have to play it just right, but when the magic hits its unbelievable.

Melting Pot is a fine album which I span up a couple of times this morning… I was happy to find this cool outtake. Maybe it could feature as a bonus track if the album is ever re-released.
