The KKK of the 1920s had governors and mayors as open members.

The weapon used by the KKK assassination squad in this clip is the M1917 Browning .30 caliber machine gun. It was manufactured in huge numbers for WW1, and thousands of them were exported to countries all over the world during the interwar period. It continued serving in the U.S. military for over 40 years, seeing heavy use in WW2 and some use in Korea as well. Although there's no record of the KKK ever using such a weapon, it was indeed used by private military forces working for coal mine and steel mill owners.

In the 20's they were a force to be reckoned with. They had something like 3 million members in the US alone. They would have had the major funding and connections to set up a hit like this.

Everybody is talking about how badass this scene makes Chalky seem, but I don't particularly see it. Sure, he gets that one klansman as he's trying to flee, but if Chalky's bootleggers hadn't put themselves into the line of fire when their boss had that shotgun leveled at his head, he would have been absolutely dead. This scene isn't meant to show Chalky as a badass - it's meant to show how this escalation of conflict which Nucky's scheming and Doyle's treachery has dragged him into is having real consequences among the people who look to him as a leader. Even fatally wounding the klansman after he'd participated in a massacre ended up having severe consequences for Chalky, because society at the time was just that racist.
