  • The Gerald R. Ford-class nuclear-powered aircraft carriers are currently under construction for the United States Navy. The Navy plans to acquire a total of ten ships in this class, designed to serve as the next generation of American supercarriers.
These new carriers will gradually replace the older ones on a one-for-one basis. The transition begins with the lead ship, Gerald R. Ford (CVN-78), which will replace the Enterprise (CVN-65). Eventually, the Ford-class will also replace the Nimitz-class carriers, ensuring the Navy's continued dominance at sea.
