- If the check engine light is flashing on your VW or Audi this likely means you have misfire issues. In this video we talk about how to track down misfires using the OBDeleven scan tool for VW and Audi models.
Misfires on VW and Audi models are generally related to the ignition coils or spark plugs on the vehicle. This video will help you answer questions like.
How do tell if you have a bad ignition coil?
Which ignition coil is bad?
Are my Spark Plugs Causing a misfire?
This would help you track down faults like
P0300 - Random/Multiple Cylinder Misfire Detected
P0301 - Cylinder 1 Misfire Detected
P0302 - Cylinder 2 Misfire Detected
P0303 - Cylinder 3 Misfire Detected
P0304 - Cylinder 4 Misfire Detected

Thanx 😁👍
i guess im asking randomly but does any of you know a trick to log back into an instagram account..?
I was stupid forgot my login password. I love any assistance you can offer me!
@Isaiah Ephraim instablaster ;)
@Miguel Kannon thanks so much for your reply. I got to the site thru google and Im waiting for the hacking stuff now.
I see it takes quite some time so I will reply here later with my results.
Can you do more of these videos please, they are massively helpful and generally good to watch to get the most out of the device
Thank you so much! I'm currently having a problem with this exact thing on my 1.2 TSI engine. Cylinder 1 and 2 misfires and the car jumps like a kangaroo. This video will help me track down the issue, hopefully.
Just found your videos, great stuff man I actually subscribed keep the videos coming.
on a regular running car what values should i expect? all 0 or some misfire is it normal to see it?

Thank you for this, I'm fighting a misfire myself. This is probably a good tool to invest in since I plan on keeping the car for quite some time. What ended up causing the misfire on your car? Stock plugs?
thank you.. identified misfire do to 1 bad coil at 60,000 so i changed the plugs and coils.. runs great now. how do i delete the codes to get the check engine light off?
Hi. How are you. A question:
I have to Audi 2004. A4 Quattro 1.8.
Panel light turned on ( check engine. )
Code P0302. The found coolant inside cylinder, so they ll remove head to repair, most likely head gasket.
They did, but 8 days later, from the repair, he turned the light on the panel ( check engine ) the same code. What could it be
thank you for the video very helpfull
Hey. In Brazil it's common for the Up TSi model to have a fuel injector dripping issue, which causes difficulties to turn the car on, weak engine, rough idle and in some rare cases, even hydrolocking, depending on how long was the car parked. My Up TSi just began showing the first symptoms of this (hard to do the first start of the day). I'd like to know if there's any way in OBDEleven to check this particular issue. Would it somehow know an injector is working differently from others? Thanks!
Thanks man I'm going through the same thing, Thanks for the tip I'm having misfires although in different cylinders so ill follow vacuum leak procedures, for a while my 2008 VW Jetta MKV 2.5 has had a rough idle and the engine light come on when i remove the engine cover as it runs rough and seems to want to stall as well as a whine almost whistle when i rev, any tips i should follow that you recommend? would be greatly appreciated.
Very informative . Just purchased obd from you , this video should help greatly
+Ken Mackay thanks for the purchase. So glad we could help.
hey the vw man :D i have tested my vw jetta 2008 1.6 cc by vagcom app and he showed me that cylinder number 2 has 2 or 5 misfire and no engine light , is that number ok ?
Hey I have a 2000 TT an am trying to do a swap, what is the best engine that's a straight fit, vr6 r32?
Does it works for golf gti mk6?
Is it possible to graph live data parameters and recorded as well?
I have a 2.5L VW Jetta 2008, just changed thermostat housing, ran it hot cause it broke off. 2nd day after repair check engine light came on when I started it. Reading misfire in 1,2,3,4 cylinders. If it was running good but initial start up idle is rough for 5 seconds then normal. Runs fine after that, would that be a sensor for air intake or a vacuum leek. If vac leek how do I find out why and where?
Hey I got golf 2000. 1.4 it’s misfire 2, 3,4Gare what is it plz help me out that would be lovely thank you .
Is this available to do with a 2003 Volkswagen jetta 2.8
Hi, I have 2015 mk7 gti. Problem I’m having is all 4 cylinders misfiring only when the oil temperatures goes up over 100 degrees Celsius. The fault code I’m getting is p0172 fuel trim bank 1 system too rich. I have already checked injectors, spark plugs and coil packs. Also every time it misfires it throws a low oil pressure warning which I’m thinking is due to the oil pump not functioning properly during misfires.
I have misfire on cylinder 3 and 4 and also random multiples misfire on my jetta 2.5 2012. There was oil in the cylinder 3 and 4. I changed the sparkplugs, ignition coils and the valve cover gasket. There's no more oil in the cylinders and my car ran great for 2 days then all the same problems came back.. Im clueless to what the problem is, the car still runs great although not as good as when i bought it (lacks a bit of power). Im thinking maybe a bad injector?
Hi! Great video!
I have a Golf R mk7 2016 with 5k miles, and when i run obdeleven for 15 minutes on idle theres no misfiring at all but as soon as I accelerate like 5% quickly and let the gas go it misfires. I did that for like 5 minutes back and forth and got 9 misfires on cylinder 1, 5 on second and 3 & 3 on the others. If i accelerate hard no misfire only when I accelerate a little and quickly let go. I really appreciate any help! Thanks
What was wrong with your car and what did you do to fix it? I am havving the same problem with my car.
Hey can you tell us what was the solution
@@butineverful vw said there was no problem, but I've changed the spark bugs. Vw has a waaay to long service intervals for the spark plugs, and there is no reason to wait for that long. It's easy to change them and they don't cost that mush.. Try and se if it helps
Thanks Paul, good info. I assume that one can do the same read-outs with VCDS.
Yup.
I have random misfires on all 6 cylinders. Would be nice a video on how to find a vacuum leak.
Hi I have a mk 4 golf witch is misfiring the problem I found was number 3 coil pack I changed that changed all the spark plugs and the fuel filter sine done these changes has got better but still misfiring does any one else no what it could be
thank you for the video, however, how did you reset the counters back to 0 before running new live data?
Thanks much. Purchased plugs and coils from ShopDap a while ago (summer) and didn't get around to replacing till now. Wet and cold weather caused misfire codes recently. Replaced plugs and coils, so far so good!
In March of 2018 I purchased a 2015 VW Tiguan 2.0Tsi AWD with about 75000 km. I was buying from a Chrysler Dealership and the vehicle showed regular maintenance at a nearby VW dealership so I brought it to that dealership for a pre-purchase inspection. I let them know that I was bringing it to them because they had been the ones to do all of the work on the vehicle for the previous owner. They gave it a glowing review, I paid for the inspection and that was that.
Four months later (July) I was driving to work in the morning and within 2 minutes of leaving my house, I had acceleration loss, the EPC and Engine lights came on and the vehicle was shaking and clearly struggling. At the time I had just turned a corner and was merging with traffic at around 50km/h. I pulled over, turned off the car and restarted the engine and all seemed fine, no warning lights and decent performance. Later that evening as I was getting ready to go home, I started the car and got the engine light again. I reached out to a friend who works for active Green and Ross and he did a preliminary diagnostic, it was throwing cylinder 1 misfire and a rare cylinder 3 misfire and general low rpm. He ended up swapping the ignition coil on cylinder 1 and all seemed well.
The next day I drove about 150km to a cottage with a couple of friends and had no issue. On the way back, I turned a corner to merge with traffic at about 60km/h and the engine light came back, no acceleration, almost got rear ended. Pulled over and engine off and then again, back to normal with no warning light. I managed to get almost all the way home and then again, while accelerating to pull into the fast lane, lost acceleration and engine light came on. Took it back to my friend and swapped spark plugs out. Misfire started happening more consistently. I decided to take it to a small shop that specializes in VW and Audi. I told them what had been done so far and asked them to change the fuel injector as that is the next piece that I could see that could affect a single cylinder.
When they got into it, they saw that the fuel injector on 1 had already been changed and they suggested that I call a dealership to see if they would cover an intake manifold replacement as they had heard this was something that they may cover. I called the dealership that did the prepurchase inspection and they said that my VIN was not covered for the manifold upgrade. I asked if they could send over the previous owner’s service records and they did. The intake manifold was replaced at 32000km and the fuel injector on 1 was replaced at 62000km. Obviously the previous owner had a similar issue...
I went back to the VW Audi shop and told them to just go ahead and replace injector 1/3 just in case it made a difference (what’s $300?) I also asked them to check the intake valves for carbon buildup. Valve 1 was the most clean and the others weren’t too bad (“we have seen much worse in fully operational vehicles”) so I said that if they didn’t look bad then don’t waste their time and my money. The thinking here was that the trouble cylinder had the cleanest valve of them all.
So they put it back together, did a compression and leak down test (no issues - phew!). They called me to say it seemed to be running well - no misfires. I went to pick it up and started it only to find the same problem. They said it must be electrical and Thu recommended that I take it to a dealership to have them check the computer, connections, electrical system.
I brought it to the nearest dealership (Humberview VW where I had an oil change done shortly after I purchased the vehicle). I explained the situation and work that had been done so far. I left it with them to diagnose and they called me the next morning to say the first cylinder was reading 50psi during a compression test. I called VW Audi, they confirmed cylinder 1 showed about 160psi and they would be very surprised if the same cylinder were to drop by over 100psi overnight (and after driving less than 10km). I went down to the dealership and explained my concern and that the previous compressions AND leakdown both gave good results. The service manager Frank, tried to convince me that these other mechanics were screwing me around and that the issue was Definitely Mechanical and that they would have to charge me $800 to diagnose the issue further (I.e. take the engine apart). I asked if there was anything else to rule out first and he said no, but that I am still covered under a 100000km/5yr powertrain warranty so if they find that is powertrain related then it will be covered - including the $800 labour. I was pretty thrown off by the compression test fiasco so they performed the test in front of me again and they got 160 on cylinder 2 and 120 on cylinder 1 - a far cry from the 50 psi they had told me on the phone. The mechanic did it again on cylinder one and it seemed like he wasn’t cranking it enough for it to reach max psi but I didn’t know enough at the time to explain myself - he hit 90psi this time. I decided to take the car to another mechanic to verify the first mechanics compression results and sure enough the test was clear 160psi across all cylinders.
I called CAA for some advice on the situation and they recommended that I take it to another dealership and see what they say before possibly persuing arbitration through CAMVAP.
I’m at another dealership today and they showed me the carbon buildup in the valves and the sure enough the first valve is almost clear but there is a bit of a buildup near where the head of the valve seats and so I’m sold on the acorn shell cleaning (6hrs -$700) oh and he says I should have come to them first as they would have done the injector replacement under the power train warranty (d’oh!). Cleaning is done and it’s still misfiring. They are working on figuring it out but my question is: what the heck should I do next? I’m almost out of money and I’m already $1000 over my annual repair budget...
What is wrong with this thing?
I traded my avensis for a 2011 1.4 tsi passat 3 months before.Since then I had to go to mechanic 7 times. Most of them for engine coolant leakage (which we barely figure out) and some of them for misfire in the cyl 1 and 4.(1 of the ignition coil changed but no progress)
So I can assure you that modern vw cars are real money pits. They have good ride, high quality interior, good handling but they also have least reliable parts which tend to fail too much.As soon as i solve the problems i will go back to toyota again.I advise you to do the same.
Thanks Düz.
I ended uo at a third dealership and had a bit better experience there. They charged me for a intake valve cleaning - which didn’t end up resolving the problem. So, they continued on to find that the valve spring on cylinder one was broken. This they diagnosed using a boroscope (the previous dealership mentioned the potential for a valve spring issue and I am still baffled as to why they insisted on a minimum $800 of labour to diagnose). While they were replacing the speing they also repaired an oil leak. Total bill for that visit was $666 - labour for cleaning if the intake valves and an oil change, the rest ended up being covered under warranty.
I understand that the pay structure at these dealerships encourages the customer having to invest some money before they will do the warranty work, but if the valve cleaning was their necessary step in diagnosing a powertrain issue that is covered under warranty then shouldn’t that also be covered?
All told, i dropped almost $2000 what was ultimately a broken valve spring, however I now have new fuel injectors, spark plugs, a fixed oul leak and an oil change. Next time i will start my diagnostics with the dealership (if im still under the powertrain warranty). I do still like the vehicle a lot and i’m looking forward to putting winter tires onto it and trudging through the snow.
Maybe I’m a masochist.
Your OBDEleven hasnt the same user interface like mine. Have you change anything? As i can see you have search ...
how is the software reading the data? Do you have a device connected to the port on the car?!
So what happens if you dont fix the misfire? Isnt it overflooding the cylinder head with fuel?
I have random misfire code...check engine light is on but NOT flashing..... Does the engine light need to be flashing?? Fault code 0300
I did this and it says number of misfire, cyl 1:6
Does this mean cyl1 is misfiring?
I have a 2009 VW Jetta I took it to AutoZone they said it was a misfire coil number 3 so my fiance replaced all the spark plugs and bought a new coil for number 3 after installing it it's still doing the same thing what could it be?
Hey, I'm trying to do the same thing on my 2007 gti but when I click the live data it only opens the list of channels, and it doesn't let me look up the misfires
If you only see the channels go to channel 14 and 15
+Deutsche Auto Parts when I do channel 15, it seems to be giving me only 1 misfire on either second or third cylinder, it changes as i turn it on and off
Paul steal others' people money. I watched this video and decided to purchase OBDeleven. I paid whatever Paul asked and he sent me a device. I was surprised to realize that it doesn't function as he describes in this video. When I contacted Paul, he said that this is an "older version of OBDeleven" that he sold me. I asked him to make a return, but he never responded to me. So I flied a claim with my credit card company.
Don't purchase anything with this guy, he'll just try to steal your money!
Hey Paul, are random misfires on each cylinder (im talking one or two at a time) while logging a cause for concern? each cylinder will show 1 or two misfires and not a the same time. it will then clear itself to zero again after driving a bit
Adam Dinglasan mine does same thing did you ever get a answer
My OBDEleven (pro) just lists channels up to 255. Where do I find a list of what the channels are for? MK4 Jetta. Thank you!
+Michael Femia 14-15-16 will show you what you need
Nooo, your car too!
That OBD-11 would have saved me so much time with diagnosing my previous MK7.
You figure out what was causing the misfires?
Hey I am getting constant misfire on cylinder 4 although i changed sparks and coils it is still there. I noticed the fuel injector connector is broken but the contacts still touch. Is it possible that cross talk is causing the misfire?
answer coming on askdap 61
Can this be done while driving to see if there is misfires and or timing pulls throughout the rpm range?
Yes
Got a PO302 Code - I have swapped the coils and spark plugs, nothing. What else could it be? Also the EPC Light has flashed up and car had no throttle response yesterday morning on start up. Please see my videos
Not very happy with it, the live data page does not come up, just a box to input numbers, inputting 14,15 or 16 still does not give the display as on the video!
I have 2010 audi a4 I install R8 coils and NGK spark plugs last yr. Now im getting missfire and rough idle. Wat could be the cause of this?
Steven Rivera Did you ever fix the problem?
So what was the problem? You just swept coil 1 & 2 with 3 & 4 and it's gone?
Exactly, I’m reading all the comments and replies, but he never said what the problem was. One would think, if it was coils or plugs, then 3 & 4 would have misfires. He never indicated that. I’m trouble shooting a 2006 Audi A6 and thought his video would help, but it’s lacking.
p300 code is what I got, smelling gas, replaced plugs plug wires gasket etc any ideas?
If you smell gas it’s probably you’re High pressure fuel pump leaking it’s a preventative maintenance thing
great information but I have a misfire on all four cylinders and I do not have a vacuum leak not sure where to go from there
New RS3 coils NGK plugs not sure what to do next
Does anyone know how to use this tool for checking DGS fluid temp? I own it and love how simple it is for some things but I'm not sure how to check fluid temp. Thanks for any suggestions!
Thanks for the purchase. If you go into the Transmission Module > Live Data > Either Channel 19 or Transmission Temp
Awesome, thanks Paul! I'll give that a shot.
When I click on live data it asks for a channel number and the keyboard only allows me to input numbers. I see no search function where I can input misfires. Please advise.
You will want to go to channel 14, 15 and 16. This will give you what you need
Here's something for you.
I have a EA211 (1.2TSI, same as 1.4TSI except capacity). I have no misfire error codes being thrown. No check engine light lit.
Yet those counters show misfires across all cylinders and they're currently at 20,000 to 30,000 per cylinder.
Watching the live data I see misfires logged at idle and while driving. I can understand the ones at idle, but not at speed and load.
Yet I have no detectable engine vibration and no rough sounding exhaust.
Something is going on and I can't figure it out as occassionally this car is a total dog on the highway and can be a struggle to get beyond 75mph. Sometimes there's no such issue and the little 1.2 can go full tilt.
What do you reckon it could be?
Injectors? Carbon issue?
Or is something else tripping up the misfire detection as I understand this is determine by crankshaft speed before and after firing.
Hey my audi a3 1.6 petrol engine shows p3011 misfire duz this means my car has up to 11 cylinders?
lol no, check what the code means.
how about 99 passat B5.
Great video Paul, got a general OBDeleven question.
A lot of adaptations require you to enter a security access code (which is listed as Access Code 31347 in the steps) however, this is not working for me. Do I need a different code?
Drive a A3 2007
Your A3 2007 has nothing to do with the Mk7 (MQB) platform!! Goodness me... Hence the Mk7 access code will not work.... beside you need to specify which control module you want to modify....
What are you trying to accomplish. I reached out to OBDeleven to check with them but they need more details about specifically what youre trying to do.
+Deutsche Auto Parts Paul, I am trying a few things without success. Changing comfort blink cycle value,
Folding Right Mirror in Rear, needle sweep on start, and window controls with remote. I think folding mirror requires memory seats, maybe you can confirm that
What if you have a single cylinder misfire?
I have a 2010 GTI cobb stage 2. I've got a CAI, and full exhaust. I replaced coilpacks and sparks (gapped correctly) and i get random misfires only under load. Cannot figure out the issue, anyone got any ideas?
Take a look at your (icm) IGNITION CONTROL MODULE
Obd eleven 😂 thank you Mr Prof...
I did all this awhile back changed all coil packs and Sparks plugs ran great but now after changed the battery car is running rough idleing and shaking as I accelerate
Edsel Martinez how did u fix that problem ? What happened when u changed the battery
My '05 Jeep Rubicon had a safety feature that would not allow it to be started with out the key. After 3 attempts, it would disable to vehicle and would have to be reset by the dealership. Does the MK7 R have any safety features similar to this?
#AskDAP
answer coming askdap 61
I have a 2011 GTI with APR stage 2. I am getting constant misfires in cylinder 3 so I completely changed out spark plugs and coil packs on all cylinders because it was time to change anyways. I am still getting a misfire in cylinder 3 even after the swap. it's been about a week and it seems to misfire and cause a CEL once a day but the engine is still powerful and feels completely fine. do you think the only thing it could be is a fuel injectors? I am now at 93,000 miles
Carbon cleaning?
Eh i bought that OBD but Im not happy becouse i don't see on list misfire counter or anything similar. I can't type channels becouse in Engine Control module i have only list and search possibilty. i don't know how to type channels in that module. Help from developer was kinda weird "go to forum nad search" i was trying to do that but i didnt find any solution.
My odb11 is the same. Nothing showing misfires. There is a lot of other data under "Engine" under control units. It's the latest odb11. The tech support in Lithuania is not helpful. It is a great app but very complicated in some regards. Needs interpretation and direction. Lucas, were you able to find the misfires?
BTW, I purchased it from DAP of course ;)
The OBD ELEVEN shows misfire recognition blocked, how do I change this?
start car
@ 2:00 If it were Scotty Kilmer, he'd grunt "uunngh" while pulling off the engine cover...
My misfire issue was resolved, here is how.
So my issue was EPC lights come on when the car oil temp is around 90C, and it starts misfiring and again between 2 to 3k RPM there is that (prrrrrrrr) sound.
Cylinder 3 was misfiring all the time.
Check spark plus, they were clean
Change coils (Issue was still there)
Cleaned injectors (Issue was still there)
Check throttle body, it had an issue so I changed it (misfire was still there)
Found I had an oil leak, through the PCV and got it fixed (issue was still there)
Screw it, opened up the engine.
Issues I found.
Valve springs needed replacement
Camshaft was a little damaged
Piston rings were gone.
And I changed the timing tensioner while at it and fixed the headers.
After these changes, the car is driving fine.
My engine drove the same 150k KM, stage 1 tune REVO.
Tune did not add the issue, I track the car all the time.
I hope my input helps anyone desperate.
obd 11???? or OBD II?
obd eleven is a software application using obd II protocol
does this work with the mk6 jetta se
Yes
Are you still using the stock clutch in your MKVII? I saw you guys go stage 2 with unitronic earlier, but I always thought your car was DSG.
Stock clutch still
That's amazing, basically everyone I've talked to has killed the stock clutch with a stage 1 tune
James Orban Im old....so theres that. ; )
Golf 7 with a mechanical Handbrake?? in Europe it's a button only
no switching around coils
Hi, i can fo this with basic obdleven or I need PRO Version?
You need Pro
thanks
I have 2.0t fsi I am getting misfires on all cylinders and a flashing check engine light when going wide open throttle. It seems to only do it when the car is warmed up and wide open throttle. I have resealed my vacum pump and put in a new cam follower and new ngk double platinum spark plugs.
subliminal1284 did u fix it? Mine does this too...
@@timothyortega1982 If its not a vacuum leak it could be carbon on intake valves due to GDI.
Having same problem with Mk5 GTI Pirelli
Ok thanks I’ll try that but why can’t the car just tell you what’s wrong with it Instead of looking for the issue
Tried this but it only happens on low rpms What the hell could it be
Most foremen will ask to replace all ignition coil..
How do you reset the misfire counter?
I need to know too. This video shows them resetting to 0. Mine seem to show lifetime misfire counts?
@@orkins2025 press and hold each cylinder button then it should come up saying "Erase, Store, Google"
hey paul i dnt have that option on mine it just say channel 1
+Gabriel Anaya what type of car. Do you have a pro version?
+Deutsche Auto Parts 2009 passat and yes i have the pro version i activated it yesterday
+Gabriel Anaya what kind of vehicle
+Deutsche Auto Parts
2009 vw passat 2.0t tsi
My obd eleven don't have that feature. I have a 06 Gli
If you purchased the Pro version (this is the only version we sell) then you would have access to this.
+Deutsche Auto Parts I did purchase the pro. And I activated it
+Deutsche Auto Parts should I delete it and try again
+Deutsche Auto Parts I can't search for miss fire counter
***** are you in the Live data section?
OBD II is obd 2 not 11
it's not hard and it's quick
Misfire on cylinder 2 and 4 new plugs new coils I don't know what to check for next I'm pulling my hair out
Volkswagen..........Turning owners into mechanics since 1959
why not use a labscope
+Chris Canty that's highly impractical for the average person. This method is accessible for people most people.
OBDeleven is an amazing device, but run by a horrible company. Bay 10 credits to reset my oil needs changing notice on my car. What a bummer. Sell me the device, with one car model and make your money that way. After a year of using the device you might as well spend the money on a VCDS program.
Shame their customer service is so bad!
Sorry we let you down. We dont see any orders under Rowan Smith, to look into what happened with your order. Please email us so we can get more detail on this.
Deutsche Auto Parts not your customer service, obdeleven! I would not endorse this company.
There is no such thing as OBD11, IT'S OBD2 OR OBDII
Lol.. its the name of the scan tool.. it still uses obd2 interface, but the name of the device is just called “obd eleven”
You absolute muppet.
