  • This week’s video is all about the exhaust. The exhaust is a normal factory exhaust and to be honest, I’ve neglected it. It was always on my ‘to-do’ list, but I never got round to it, so it corroded through and fired itself straight to the top of the list. Over the years, the centre and rear sections have corroded through and are blowing quite badly. I spoke to Ash at Jelly Snake Motorsport to source a replacement OEM exhaust because it’s going to be a temporary measure - I’ve got a turbo to fit at some point and I’ll need to fabricate an exhaust for it when I do. Until then, it obviously still needs an exhaust.
The replacement exhaust has been wire wheeled and reinforced. I’ve cleaned it up to add a few small beads of welds to reinforce the hangers because they’re known weak points, they snap a lot, so I’ mitigating against it. Also in order to mitigate against future corrosion and to control some of the heat in the system, I’ve decided to paint the exhaust with something called Cerakote. I’ve used it before on the dashboard and it’s a ceramic material held in an ammonia suspension, so its bad for you if you don’t use your PPE. As it’s a ceramic based paint, it will control the heat generated by the engine and will also protect the exhaust from environmental factors such as road salt, rain water etc. Knowing my luck, it’ll now corrode from the inside!
During this process, I did find hat there were a few issues along the way, most notably the union between the centre and rear sections of the pipe. The clamp used in the video was eventually replaced with a one-piece clamp that has a bolt through none side only to tighten it up, used in conjunction with exhaust assembly paste. Other than that, the majority of the process was plain sailing.
