Only Simon would call this a simple video. It was a visual feast! Those drone shots & views up top at the station were incredible, all of it. Sweet Rocko climbing those steps was really something 👏.
The BEST way to minimize condensation is to remove everything from the ceiling and clean it. Then decide how much headroom you can afford to lose. Hopefully a couple of inches and pad it down so you have 3 or 4 inches (or more) total between the sheet metal and your ceiling plywood layer and the rest gets BLOWN IN HIGH R VALUE FOAM. The foam will moisture seal every cubic inch to and including the entire sheet metal, buffering the condensation to where it can't happen. Rather than plywood for the ceiling? Use something like flexible shower wall plastic liner. Rock wool lets the condensation get right to the sheet metal which is working just like an AC evaporator in the winter. Black Mold HEAVEN. That pup deserves better than that! She has no boots in the snow! At least you can do the insulation properly to fix one! Advertise AG powder if you have to pay for it for a few videos!
And if you do use plywood, or any wood, for the ceiling layer, use OIL BASED SPAR POLYURETHANE to seal it. Several coats on all sides and edges. Sand smooth before first coat, 0000 steel wool and tack wipes between coats to make it look like furniture on all the visible surfaces.. Great Winter project in AZ or So Cal. LOL
Reason the inside metal roof of your van is getting wet is not from interior condensation. Look up cold bridging or thermal transfer. I live about 1.5 hours north of Red mountain up by Mt Rainier and I can tell you it happens ~100-150 nights a year here. RV companies have been trying to fight it since forever and I maybe found one that actually has but I'll know in a couple more weeks when I pick it up. All my metal roofs drip soon as it thaws each morning leaving anything under a metal roof almost as wet as if you left it outside. I use tyvek before putting the metal roofs down to help with the drips. The van's I have lived in have done the same as you are describing. I got rid of a shipping container I had here due to that same issue. It became a cold moldy mess. What I'm having build now for my truck is all fiberglass, not a nut, bolt, piece of metal or wood, just glue and foam and fiberglass because of this very issue in these parts...Head south where it's no longer an issue and when you are coming back thru I have a shed with three sets of washers and dryers with a hot tub right outside. I think I can beat Hood River..
Hi Simon. Don't worry or feel pressured about going big on the summits. Most of just like watching your day to day stuff, hiking, cooking, sewing.... and of course Rocko!
Another great video Foresty! I almost fell off my chair when I saw the title. I was the Red Mt. fire lookout in the summer of 1995. I have lots of pictures from my time there but no video, so was great to see that view again. I was a dirt poor volunteer traveling around the country for the first time, and it was one of the best summers of my life. We rehabbed the lookout that year, new stove, bed, fridge, paint, railings, etc. Glad to see it's still standing. Thanks for sharing your adventures.
I know I know that Ninja air is your current favorite...... But, to many of us, you are always the Foresty forest with the crock pot! We all missed your crock pot that started it all.....
I’ll say it again. Someone should work with you to use your drone footage for a movie or planetarium presentation. Your footage is the best I’ve every seen. Thanks from Boston.
Be still my heart! 🏔 I haven’t seen that panorama in forever Forest. Thank you for visiting my state. Sorry we didn’t hVe a warmer welcome for you. Please come back soon. Saving this video. Another great job Forest.
Mount SHASTA!, CA and Colorado has some of the highest peaks in the United States. And tons of them. The California Sierra Nevada Range is amazing also.
Hi Adam, I got one of those ninja foodies. because of this channel. you can take a pork chop frozen hard as a rock put it in on pressure cooker function for 10 minutes then switch to air crisper for about 15 minutes. results a near perfect chop from frozen in 25 minutes or so. I miss the old crock pot but hey it has a slow cook function as well. I thank Simon almost every day for the suggestion. ☮
Welcome back to the USA, Foresty and Rocko! I guess that this is Rocko's first time in the lower 48 states, although she did visit the US on your recent trip to Alaska. The drone footage from the Red Mountain Lookout of Ranier, Hood, St. Helen's, Adams and Jefferson is breathtaking. Those amazing mountains peaking up above the clouds is stunning. Thanks for sharing these beautiful panoramic vistas with us!
5 star laundromat reviews. What more could you ask for. I was equally impressed by using 💳 on the machines. Man on moon but no coins for the machine has finally been defeated.
I think a timelapse of Rocko in the van alone as you're out shopping/showering/etc. would be nice now that she's not so nuts any more to have to go in the cage.
Amazing drone footage!!! It takes six weeks to dry out from caffeine. You gain an inner tranquility not possible on caffeine AKA the stress of life drops considerably.
In French we say, "plus rien à dire." which, loosely translated, means, nothing to add. Or, too beautiful for words. I went once to Washington state. My goal was to get a great view of Rainier. Done! But you got it from up top, with the bonus of the super celebrated surroundings peaks. Bravo!
I been watching for what feels like YEARS, I live in western washington. If you have the opportunity to check out greenwater off of forest road 70 you will not be disappointed. Been camping there all my life. And if I ever see you in my pizza shop, it's on me 😂
My van roof isn't insulated at all and in the morning I can see droplets of water. But at least it can then dry out fully and if there's ever any mould (so far so good) at least you can see it and take action.
FORESTY!! The Texas gulf coast is cool now! No snow! I am in Rockport/ Fulton headed to Gilead and Victoria next. Wintering in my van along the gulf. Come join me! Texas is very van friendly.
Some of the best shots ever from the mountain top! Had a memorable laundromat experience once in Lisbon. There was no soap dispenser in the laundromat - ?? - so I started walking around looking for a store that sold smallish soap packets…anything suitable. Couldn't find anything of course, so I figured I'd just have to wash with water - better than nothing. It turned out the machine injected soap automatically once it had started…what a concept.
Yo Foresty, I had a similar problem with coffee before as well. I used to drink 2-3 cups a day first thing in the morning, and it wacked out my energy throughout the day. I quit it for about 3 years, and recently started drinking it again with no issues. The trick? Chug water right when you wake up in the morning. You're very dehydrated when you first wake up, since you haven't had water for hours. It's why you feel groggy in the morning. If you don't already, try a cup or two of water first thing and see how that affects you. I noticed a difference immediately once I quit coffee (because I supplemented with herbal tea, which is just flavored water anyways!). I thought the lack of caffeine was what made me feel better....turns out I was just dehydrated and then making it worse with coffee, a diuretic. Love the videos, keep up the good work.
I did 1" foam in the ceiling and then a 1"4 inch wood rib frame, then reflectix. Use mainly a buddy to heat deisel heater sometimes.. Have had 0 ceiling condensation issues for 4 .5 years so far in this van 8+ years total. Full time year round colorado high country . Maybe you could get a 12V squirrel cage fan, cut a 2" round hole in your headliner, and pressurize it for a few hours a day to dry it out. Some of them put out a crazy amount of air.
Another great video! I say "Rocco" and my dog sits in front of the TV... she loves to watch Rocco! Dinner looked great! Did I hear you say "kweyso" lol you were just kidding right? In Spanish the Q has a hard K sound - kay-so. LOL just Spanish for cheese... any cheese. It will be interesting to see where your ventures take you this winter! Here in N. Central Idaho we had a week of Fall now in Winter weather 5 weeks before the season actually starts... it was 8 F here last night. It has been many years since we had a really cold winter. If I was able to I would head down to Quartzite for a couple months with the rest of the Snowbirds but the price of fuel and pitiful retirement income prohibits that unfortunately. I lived in an RV here for a decade or more and the wood stove is what dried out the moisture. Dry heat! It will pull moisture from the entire interior. Good luck and safe travels! BTW your videos are always interesting, they don't have to be extravagant. Your fan base just enjoys your adventures as well as your daily life.
Simple video my foot! The views were spectacular! Watching Rocko go up those stairs was absolutely adorable. As far as doing away with my morning coffee, never! It's the only way I can get my morning meds down and not taste them, lol. Having a handful of life saving meds every morning isn't so bad, it's just the taste of them that the coffee covers up. Tried just the 8 ounce glass of water to start my day and yes it gives you much more steady energy than coffee, but I can't stomach the taste of the meds I have to take to stay alive so coffee and water in the morning are my choice. Love your videos.
Nice! Your in my neck of the woods. Family and I camp mt hood and Rainer every chance we get. Lived here in Washington for 25 years and I’ve barely scratched the surface of this beautiful land. Welcome to my home! Enjoy :)
Born and raised in Washington, you did us justice with the view of the mountains. Your recipe looks like a winner, I'll have to give it a try. Great video.
Might have been a quick summit, but that scenery was surreal, with the peaks of the mountains poking up through the fog. I actually took a screen shot during your drone footage, to put in my screensaver folder. Funny you should mention caffeine - I've been pushing back my own consumption, hopefully to give it up fully soon.
I quit caffine after drinking 2-3 cups of coffee every morning for 10 years. Most people experience headaches after a week or so that can last 1-2 months, for me it was a dull headache day and night for a month straight. Has to do with the blood vessels in the brain getting used to normal bloodflow. Hopefully you don't witness this since you didn't drink that much. Definately felt better energy and no peaks and crashes in energy after that month.
If you end up making out to the beautiful southern oregon coast hit us up! Starting watching you back in the bike tour days and now love your hikes! Good shit man!
I actually really enjoyed the "simplicity" of this one... Yeah I love this channel because you climb epic shit, but it's also nice to see you driving, cooking, doing laundry, etc. as it helps me feel immersed in the lifestyle
Your opening scenes of the high up Panorama views rival Stephen Spielberg any day of the week, and I love the music you select. Do you spend a lot of time agonizing over what to select? Love those high tech snow shoes. Can you imagine if the gold miners and anyone who worked up north in the cold had access to those kinds of quality items. I wonder how much further they would have excelled. Does Rocco’s feet seem to come through the hikes ok? In the old Jack London books he described having to make moose moccasins for some of the newer more tender dogs from the south to help them when sled pulling. You could probably whip up a pair if needed. Mount Hood: ‘The Shining’… where they shot the hotel scenes. At least it isn’t as cold as Alberta in Washington and Oregon. I love Oregon, the parks are kept so clean there and the fragrance of the forests makes you giddy for more. Your supper in the air fryer; do you feel like it’s superior to the old faithful slow cooker? Is it faster, healthier, etc? And you sure don’t scrimp on the seasoning! That was quite a wallop of garlic put in. Love the look of the wood stove at night. It must be like having an old friend over. Do you find it extends your battery heat or even the diesel heater? That is a challenging situation with the moisture retention coming through the roof. I wonder if you could stop in one day to a good quality RV manufacturing place and get some tips from them. It sounds a bit dodgy with the possibility of black mound forming. Keep up your TB shots. I used to work in the underground vaults in Edmonton splicing cable. Water was a constantly running in the neck of the manhole. They gave us these round metal rings to put in the neck. The bottom of them had a groove around them that fit a bike inner tube very well. Inflate it a little and the water was blocked off. In your situation you need a method to capture and divert all the water from above and downwards to possibly a hole in a good spot that could be opened and closed easily with silicon around it to keep it water proof. We had these 100 foot rolls of a stretchy tape that you peeled off the paper on the back and then you could stretch the rubber dam side any way you wanted. If you could tuck in a path around the roof in a slightly descending circle around the van down into an exit, it could solve your problem of retaining the water. Those roles were 3 feet wide by 100 feet long and I’m telling you it was miraculous. Are you finding the fuel cheaper in the US compared to Canada? The conversion rate for Canadian vs American dollars is just brutal. We are taking our family to Banff for Christmas and I’m plenty excited to see our granddaughters hurtling down a snowy hill on toboggans. They live in the Deep South of Texas and have never seen snow. We have lots of activities planned. Do you think you will go home to be with your family for Christmas, or will you just end up wherever you are? A true nomad’s life.
You made me home sick there sir l used to live in Carson wa. In the 80’s & 90’s driving up to trout lake to hunt and running up sr14 to hood river. I still miss the Columbia river and its been over 20+ years. Thanks for the trip down memory lane.

A true nomad’s life.
those drone shots are like shots 🥃🍸
