Without getting into the insufferable world of internet 1911 debate, it still has the best trigger and grip angle to have been designed.
Because they are nostalgic and stupid.
99.99% of all pistols in use rely on the Browning tilting barrel design so it's not that surprising tbh.

Guys hearing this are now going to equate their Taurus to the custom 1911's made for Delta Force.
What Mac says about maintaining the M4/AR15 is what I have been doing ever since I got out of the Army. Spending hours scrubbing an unshot firearm ruined me on cleaning them even if they had been shot. I keep the bolt carrier well lubed and 1 pull of a bore snake. They will shoot a couple of thousand rounds between scrubbings just fine. I had one in particular that on numerous occasions was shot enough in a short period of time to have the gas tube glowing and the barrel smoking! Kept the BCG wet and away we went.
Ounces lead to pounds and pounds lead to pain.

I bought a piston gun as a first. I will be buying a DI that will become my primary. Good gouge!
Given that Germany, France, the USMC and the US Army have all adopted piston guns and the popularity of the piston driven MCX I'd say that it wasn't actually a solution without a problem.
The 1911 has been my favorite handgun and constant carry for over 45 years . I have other platforms but none can compare with the ergonomics and trigger on a quality 1911.
You should try a 2011. I love my 1911's but my 9mm 2011 takes the cake, I get all the features of the 1911 but with a lighter pistol that shoots 9mm and get 16 +1 carry capacity.
I couldn't agree more. I have a Kimber 1911 that is my EDC , I turned my brother onto 1911's and now he's hooked. No other pistol feel's as natural in my hand.

@Young Ay Mass x Velocity Squared = Kinetic Energy. It's better to have a Faster bullet than a heavier one.
Also, it's better to have higher capacity in case you miss. You will.. And less recoil for faster follow-up shots.

@@tylertapp131 Yes, a 45-70 is powerful and what I would want for buffalo or griz. It will destroy the target's body. But it won't destroy the target's soul like JMB's own 45 ACP. 45 ACP is God's Cartridge .

Being able to have many things that make you happy and feel fulfilled is a good recipe to an enjoyable life.
The 1911 is a proven platform. Many competition shooters have 1911 platforms that shoot .38 super or 9mm. High school buddy of mine builds custom 1911 platforms for élite shooters- $5,000. He only builds 2-3 a week. He doesn't advertise, sales are by referral only. He has a 18 month waiting list.
I can't explain it- he is in a sweet spot of the 1911's mystique and having his product in the hands of people who perform well when in the spotlight.
First time I handled a 1911, I was about 6, still too young for Cub Scouts. This would have been about 1956. My father showed me how to field strip and reassemble his that he carried while piloting a B-17 over Europe in WWII. He showed me where he kept it in the top of his closet, and said if someone broke into the house to get it and shoot them with it. A year or so later was the first time I had to use it. A teenager from across the street broke in and started twisting my younger friend's arm, making him scream and cry. I did what I was told to do and pointed it at the teenager's head and told him to let my friend go and get out of our house or I would shoot him. He did, so I didn't have to shoot him. His father called my father that night and yelled about it. My father invited him to the street for a fist fight (didn't happen), and said I was following his instructions. No further problems from the teenager or his dad.
Nowadays you'd both be in jail!

Thankfully the 416 takes regular GI mags as well, and functions much better suppressed these days. Those first 416s didn't have a vented gas block and were just overgassed like crazy. I'd be interested to see Pat check out a current 416 and get an update.
They’d still be heavier. Re gas block vs. impingement…gas block remains a superior design. The M4s are also somewhat over-gassed. The “mid-gassed” design ARs were created to fix that, producing a gentler recoil impulse,, though they’re not universally used.
I’ve never heard anyone who has real experience with a 416 say they prefer it to a regular AR platform. You can tune an AR to run just as reliably suppressed and it will always be lighter.

As a contractor overseas we had piston LWRC's for a little while and then we all went back to Daniel Defense. And thats not a dig on LWRC. They're really nice.. but like Pat's saying they're heavier and for PSD's that isnt what you want. The Daniel Defense checked every box without adding "solutions to problems that dont exist."
I'm still a 1911 guy - 1985 USMC was my first time, we carried them as Security Force Marines - What we had were so beat to crap, though...

Custom M4 with 10.5 inch barrel short barrel rifle. Semiautomatic is only thing you need. Keep it simple

At age 19, I became a 1911 aficionado. During the wondernine 90’s, I gravitated away. My Hi-power would run 100% with hydrashoks, and the spooks who stalked our area often traveled in groups > 7. Never had much luck with carry ammo in the colt 70 series. While I am still enamored with the beauty of the 1911, I don’t currently own any. There are better options today, IMHO, for fighting handguns.
Hi Pat, enjoy these Tibbits. Enjoy the 1911 platform since the mid-80's but I do own a few Glocks. Here in my home state of NY, the 1911 makes more sense because of the capacity restrictions of 7+1. On top of I have more time running one, Wilson being my favorite flavor of choice since the late 90's ... Stay Strong and Be Safe !!!
So good to hear his opinion on the m4 - have heard guys at the range go on and on about the piston operated AR’s and how they are so superior etc... I never had any issues with my Wyndham..

I lost my 1911 cherry in JROTC in '77, my battalion was kind of adopted by the 529th MP Co, the USAREUR Honor Guard company at Campbell Barracks in Heidelberg FRG. They set up a fam-fire range day for us at the Rod & Gun Club, that was my first experience with the 1911, M16A1, and M14 (which I absolutely fell in love with). Later used them in the NG until we turned them in for M9s, which just didn't feel right. Nowadays I carry a Star BM, basically a scaled-down 1911 in 9mm, it feels right and is a good bit more concealable than a 1911.

Never been in the service but I picked up a 1911 commander because of its longevity and frankly the Americana factor. Also picked up a G19 gen4 because it is reputed to address all the “issues” found in guns like the 1911. I prefer the 1911. Sold the G19. Then gen5 came out and supposedly they are a big improvement, now I want to try one of those, but even going to the range, especially for t&e is just too pricey. Thanks for sharing your experiences PatMac.
The only pistol that feels better in my hand than the 1911 is the CZ - 75 designs, which took a lot from the Hi Power.
I'm a little older than Pat but he's right. You have to have someone who knows a 1911 teach you how to shoot the gun and once you get it it's smooth sailing. I had to have a Gunners Mate spend extra time with me the first time I tried to qualify with it. I couldn't hit a bull in the ass with it even if I threw it at him. I have a CZ-75 and you are correct. That gun was designed to fit the human hand. Pure butter.
I remember picking up a 1911 at the first gun shop i went too and thinking how nice it felt in my hand, it was amazing. But the cz-75 felt even better so thats what I went with.

@@Joe_Karably The IMI Jericho 941 are some of the highest quality pistols I've ever owned. They're made of some kind of alloy of adamantium and mythril.
100% agree with the CZ75 comment. I picked one up a few years ago after trying other pistols. Smooth is the best description of that gun. Plus I could actually hit a target for the first time! I suck with pistols, but am okay with my CZ.

The iconic 1911…my first handgun, but no longer the case. I switched to striker fired in the early 2000’s thank you Pat. By the way, you look adorable with those glasses.
i got a p10f (striker) in 45acp, holds 14 rounds, and i'll take it over any 1911. something about a high-capacity 45acp pistol....
LEO for 40 years. Have carried Smith .38 and .357 revolvers. Smith and Glock autos on duty. My EDC is a commercial Colt that belonged to my grandfather and passed down by my father with no modifications. Can't tell you how many rounds have been put though it in 3 generations.

My first time shooting a 1911, was an Actual WW2 Issued!! It was definitely smoother than I thought......I've started moving Away from polymer since then.....just got a Beretta 92, love that too. But yeah I totally get why people love the 1911's.....it's a Slick platform.
I really like the T-91 uppers that have been coming in. They're light and handy.
Love my SS Mark IV 1911 but damn it's heavy compared to my Glock 19 (EDC). Have an inexpensive DPMS AR platform but installed a Geissele SSA 2 stage trigger (LOVE IT). Follow Macs advice, keep it oiled and the bore clean and the world will turn.💯
When I "grow up" (I am old enough 😁), I would like to be a "Basic Dude Stuff" like Pat McNamara 💪🏼😎🇺🇲 Tier 1 men like him are truly role models to follow and learn from. Not all, of course, there are some SF guys who brag all day long about how "badass" they are. Not Pat. He is a down-to-earth BDS guy with dozens and dozens of proven skills, sharing with us, unassumingly, a lot of stuff to make us better. I appreciate it, sir!
Finally a operator that understands and said that the AR does not need to be cleaned every time you shot it a few hundred rounds. Bore clean is perfect. Nothing wrong with a little carbon build up on the rifle. Light oil is your friend. Thank you Mac
What happens if you carry a dirty bore? Less accuracy for the fouling shots?
@@PostcardsfromAlaska it’s possible that it could be less accurate. I don’t know the full science on it. But anything that could obstruct the projective I would say could throw off accuracy for long range. Short range we are talking millimeters maybe an inch. Long range could be more. Depends on ammo certain projectiles could leave fragments. As well if it’s a shorter barrel rifle let’s say 10 inches and that round may need 12-14 inches for full powder burn could leave residue for follow up shows for velocity shift.
@@PostcardsfromAlaska again I’m not an expert at all, I have a lot of trigger time but not close to Mac. I am going off my experience with shooting lots of rounds and going long periods of cleaning and not every time I take it out. I’ve never had an issue but always been taught and in the habit of a clean bore is a clear drag strip for the round.
@@PostcardsfromAlaska it’s more of a verification that you don’t have a bore obstruction IMO. If you don’t have a chrome lined barrel, it is possible for fouling to attract moisture and cause rust (even the “non-corrosive” stuff, it’s not “rusts up on the truck ride back from the range” bad but still…)
I love my 1911's. I shoot them well, they are all reliable, and they fit me like a glove.
I'm neither a member of the Internet Defense Force nor a Tier 1 COD operator, and for my personal needs they'll get me to my rifle if I need something more.
I have a safe full of 1911s and I love them. I recently switched to a tricked out xds 45 for summer carry. That's the only one that has never had any feeding or extracting problems it eats everything and spits them out.
My first time handingly the 1911, was doing the El Presidente. Nailed it too, perfect reload.
This is how I will now describe my beer belly: "Forty pounds of lightweight hops".
I love my 1911's and 2011. I ran a piston AR for two years and now I only run the old style direct impingement AR's.

Mac. I need help and maybe your subscribers can help. I have small kids now. I want to conceal carry. Former Army, some training with the 9 mil. Can you do a vid about the very basics of conceal carry? What makes me hesitant is I don’t know what gun is best. Should I carry with a round chambered and on safe? Front carry? What about when I’m driving do I take it out? Best holsters and belt? It’s these simple details that have made me shuffle my feet.
There was once so much hubbub about the "unreliability" of the DI system that I was cleaning mine every couple hundred rounds out of paranoia. Turns out the hype was fake news.
I never understood it. I’ve ran 1000 rounds out of a bare bones dry M4 at -35° without a single stoppage. Most people’s “experience” with poorly reliable AR/M4/M16s would be fixed by replacing their magazines.
Another great video! My buddies who have never been in the military much less combat give me crap all the time about not cleaning my guns. I just tell them "if you don't know what it's capable of in times of peace how will you know what it can do when you really need it." I clean mine about every 2 months.

So true, early GWOT we were exposed to a lot of “Military Fads” within the SOF Community. Dudes would be more focused on the fact something was “new” as opposed to if something was “good” or “made sense”. The 416 was a great example, and the SCAR followed the same progression. They were “solutions to problems that didn’t exist”. 100% my personal opinion, by 2006/7 the SOF Community answered the question as “Shooter’s Preference”. As long as your MED kit was on the left side, we are all good. We had the inventory to be the most effective War-fighting Force on the planet. Now the shooter had to do their Homework. From an Officers perspective the MK48/46, SAR25/SPR only enhanced our capabilities operationally again enhancing the Mission Templates/ Concept Sketches that allowed us to quickly move through the planning process.

I do love my P38's but 1911's feel pretty damned good too!
Armourer friend of mine said the same thing about the weight and can't wrap his head around why the French made that deal. I guess it's catered to the one making the purchase for longevity rather than the ones carrying them and they have mag issue baggage. H&K is making sure they get their deal, quick on the lawyer draw. The Haenel was a great choice, lighter but still making it through all the torture.
Great guns but they have never fit my hand well, I opted for the 92fs which fit perfectly.

Mac nailed this one to a “T”. Particularly, about keeping the m4/AR lubed and only cleaning it (roughly) every 2k rounds.
I have 2 lumbar fractures and a displaced disk. With the right belt and holster, I don't notice the weight of my heavy m-1911. I can shoot it so much better (and without trying) than my issued Glock. If I have a choice it's the Springfield or the Kimber. Too bad I can't use them at work.
Have a 1911 hanging from my shoulder as I type this. My favorite handgun of all time. Old doesn't always mean obsolete.

The first 1911 A1 I picked up and shot was a custom Randall owned by a former Delta Force Operator named Pete. The year was 1993.
Ah yes. Memories of my "first time". With a 1911 that is. I too was in the US Army and in MP school was where I encountered my first fourty-five. It was a Remington Rand from the 1960s i guess. It looked like it had been through a war already. It shot well enough and I qualified, but Remember thinking if I went to war I would want one that was a bit newer and nicer.
No 1911A1s were built after WW2. A lot of them saw post war rebuilds though.
Hmmmm. I did not know that little tidbit. I wonder what that thing had been through? Anyway, shooting that RR gave me the bug to get my own 1911 and make it my own. Which I did. I bought a mkiv series 80 in blue and almost straight away installed a commander-style hammer, videki trigger and BoMar sights. An Ed Brown bbl came later. It was not the tack driver that I thought it would be as I was the weakest link.

Never liked the M16 anything platform,too many probloms (this is pre 2000's) my personal loadout (average) modified Springfield M14A1,H&K MP5 sidearm was the HK MK 23.
Iraq & Afghanistan FN Scar 17 & Springfield M14 Socom (modified).
My Problom with the Scar was it felt to bulky past that never had alot of probloms with it,less then those with M4's at least.
With respect to the M16 platforms they have come a long way,I actually have one myself and have zero issues with it but most of the parts are not the 'standard' stuff,alot of aftermarket.
The only reason I never jumped up on the HK416 platform was basically my M14 worked,it was reliable,I hit what I aimed at it kept me alive..why switch?.. I am a firm believer in if it's not broke don't fix it.
I'm not throwing shade on anybody's choice or the reasons why they carry what they carry or anything for me I had many years using my loadouts and it saved my life and the lives of my teammates and that's all the reason I need to continue using them rather then try this or that.
I carried one HK mag which I did like for my M4 the rest just regular mags ( Army - Iraq ) the HK mag is heavier but good magazine I thought no real problems , I did load it to 29 rounds but it worked better for me, some soldiers liked them some didn't it was just personal preference , some guys 2nd tour or 3rd tour Pmag was popular
had the m27,m38 and now the m110a1 issued and didnt think they were worth the weight

I agree with the capacity issue. Just... not enough to stop loving the 1911 in .45. If the 2011-style guns weren't so damn pricey, though, yeah... I'd go for the higher round count.
@@eljefeamericano4308 Yeah...That price point is a killer. I've found some reasonably priced DS 1911's but most are outrageously expensive. I saw an American Tactical double stack for like 549 or something. Dunno seems too good to be true.
@@94SexyStangunless you have multiple attackers. Dumping half a mag or more into an attacker and still having another to go makes is 100% a reason for more ammo. That's assuming you hit every round. When the bad guy is making an actual effort to not get shot it's quite hard for even a USPSA Grandmaster to hit every time.

If it runs for you, and doesn't have noticeable wear issues, run it. Do Spec Ops guys armorers run NDI on their guns, or just replace internals/barrels at intervals?

I’ve wondered why the ar catches so much shit compared to HK or FN Scar. I think people get caught up in the exotics and that they’re European. I also don’t understand the push for exotic rounds like the 6.8, 6.5 creedmoor and others. You should want what you can get your hands on most immediately. The .223/5.56 is a great round and works from 0-500 yards….. what more do you need? Same for 9mm or 45 acp. Everyone wants 10mm because that’s what companies want you to piss away your money on.
There are dudes that take .223 out to 1,000 yds.
556/223 is the most widely used, but ridiculously underestimated caliber its insane.
@@coltonowens2742 I know people that kill deer with .223 without any problems. I prefer .308, but wouldn't hesitate with a quality bullet.
Ranger Regiment adopted the FN Scar for a year or so, then went back the M4. Army SF rejected it during their trials. And HK is cool, but not worth the money. European gun makers have a political strangle hold on the US military.

Check out the Sig MCX rifle for an improved reliability piston M4. The MCX is fairly new and working out the bugs but is pretty solid. Question: I live in an artic environment so can anyone recommend a high end AK rifle chambered in 5.56 NATO? I am thinking a 5.56 Galil or an old Valmet AK may be my only options.
Zastava and WBP both make easily attainable AK rifles that are 5.56 chambered.

I have a few 1911’s and it is some thing very special in many ways, but i have to say that my CZ Shadow and 97B are, for me, far better shooters

2. Instead of carrying bear spray in the woods, I carry my Government Issue US Army M1911A1 with spare magazines from the Civilian Marksmanship Program or CMP.
3. If your 1911 does not say, Government Issue US Army or Navy or etc M1911 or M1911A1, it is a clone. There is only one M1911 and M1911A1.
Closest I’ve gotten to a 1911 was a sig p938….so in other words, not very close 😂 one of these days when the world isn’t insane maybe I’ll build one.
He makes very good points on the 416 it's fucked up that we have had the AR15 family of weapons for decades and we still haven't come close to perfecting the design
There is no single perfect design. It's mission specific. Toyota Tacoma works great in the mountains of Montana but not so well in Los Angeles street racing a Ferrari. The gun is tuned to what you need for the task. That's the beauty of the AR. You tune it to do what you want. It's flexibility makes it great. You want a fixed design pick up a garand and affix bayonets..
Redundant grip safties should be more widely employed.
