I like the idea that staying disciplined nurtures motivation, instead of needing motivation to stay disciplined. Makes so much more sense this way around!
I'm in my mid 40s, and have spent the last 19 years in a sedentary desk job which has completely wrecked my body. Found PatMac while researching range skills, and he's given me the motivation to get my meat suit back into fighting shape.

Three years ago I was at my lowest low. Life was bad. YT put Jocko’s Extreme Ownership Ted Talk in my feed, and it led me down the responsibility rabbit hole. Next I discovered Jordan Peterson, then Goggins. Then Pat Mac. These 4 men changed my life. Three years ago I was 51, working a $10 an hour job, and living in a hotel. My life had fallen apart 8 years before and I was stuck in the hole I had dug for myself. It was hopeless… I thought. These days I work out in some form 7 days a week, I’m making nearly $30 an hour at a new job, I’m growing, learning, and becoming a better person than I was the day before, every single day. Pat, if you ever read this, thank you. You saved my life. You saved my family. The inspiration you’ve given me and others cannot be underestimated or understated. You’re not just making people stronger, you’re saving people’s lives and creating a better tomorrow for us all by doing so, every single day.
Been following Pat for a number of years now. Dont recall how i found him but it was like 8 years ago or something The best thing about Pat is the way he say things, like showing a sense of humour...like "GetYouSum Bands" and things like that, plus the no BS attitude. The way he is like, "ok, no gym, cool.... get outside and find some logs to lift" the practical side of it. And his basic dude stuff vids are a gospel for men. Dont learn it, KNOW that stuff lads !!!
Had no idea of your PMR condition--totally inspired by your perseverance through the physical and mental challenges of this and convicted by my weak excuses. Thanks PatMac for lighting a blaze!
Yeah, this one was masterful. Maybe it's Pat, because he is so multi faceted and interesting, but Juji did a masterful job directing the flow of the conversation.
Power slam a whole quart of water when you rise up! I did that for 20 years in the US Army. I think Pat is treating everyday like a selection course. Army Strong!
One of my most enjoyable mental activities is wondering what I'm going to do tomorrow for my workout. I do this every night before I fall asleep. It keeps me motivated and creative because I always like to think of different ways to workout...
I used to be a track guy. I had to stop the video & comment just to emphasize how respectable a 56 second 400m is. Anything under a minute is pretty damn damn good. Anything under 50 seconds is approaching the elite of the elite levels. That 55-60 second range takes some serious toughness, especially for a bigger dude. I always liked the 400 because as long as you could work harder for longer, you could be super competitive.
I will try sprinting. Ridiculous, that only sprinting i had to do in my whole life was in 5th grade, and it was 60m. School system has failed to teach anything about sports.
As a vet who also got some wacky, very painful diseases (auto-immune arthritis and erythromelalgia!), I was down for the count for a couple years, thought I wouldn't lift or run ever again. It sucked watching my body, which was very highly fit when I was in the Army, turn soft. I recently got tired of that shit and just said fuck it, and got back to it. Going on 2 months of working out most days and it's going great!
You are looking healthy , I admire you and what you stand for . God bless you and your family thank you for your service .Please keep putting out videos I love them .stay strong !
@@oongieboongie discipline means you do the work even if not motivated. You take the need of any mental state out of the equation and do the work regardless.
Glad to hear him say 44-46 was the fittest he’s ever been. Just turned 30 and after 10 years of training the PRs have slowed and seem to have more injuries (both previous and new). Was starting to think maybe the best was behind me but this gives me hope there is more in the tank
I found Pat in 2020. The first video I watched was about Charlotte. I read SENTINEL. Every time I have to do sth that annoys me "just basic dude stuff" crosses my mind and I get it done. I use a white board for some things and a black board for other things. Meanwhile, "5P" is pretty known among my fellows. Pat is the uncle every boy needs.
44 y/o now and am in better shape than when I was an Active Duty Infantryman through my 20s, no question!! Train smart, train consistant, and get yourself better!
Speaking of sprints: 400m sprint was one event of a physical fitness test I had to do for a job and man, i trained and trained and my best time in training was like 1:07. But test time came around and we went in groups of 4. I happened to have the other biggest guy in the entire candidate pool (I was the largest by far at 6'4" 250 pounds, he was about 210-220) and just having him in my group motivated me to run my best 400m sprint at 50 seconds flat. Everyone was astounded that a 250-pound lineman sized dude could do it. I felt so good, and even my biggest competitor said, "Bro, you got some wheels on you. I tried to catch you, and i couldn't!" He was on my heels the whole time, though. I gotta get back into that sprinting shape. Best I've ever felt!
I also have to know when to end a workout. So many more angles so many different exercises. Hard to stop the next set of 100. I'm almost 50 I needed to hear this this morning.
Great podcast. I have a chronic spinal pain disease and rely on SS and God only. First eating healthy IS expensive on a very small limited income but I do what I can. Also, ringworms is a fungus and can be treated with Monostat (yes the feminine product for yeast infections). Ask me how I know! Thanks for sharing!
Post 30, never been much for workouts. Just hard physical labor and playing with my dog. But I still sprint, especially at work. I’ve been enjoying calendars more, too. Maybe it’s time for a whiteboard and more routine workouts…
40:00 Lots of my male friends and I in our 50s have been suffering the same. We've all done some sort of military service, tired, pain, arthritis and even diabetic thought we don't drink sodas or eat loads of crap. Sometimes I'll wash the dishes and need a 15 minute nap. Before my 50th I was training hard to join up for the Dad's Army but some days it's hard enough to walk let alone do the assault course. 😂 But getting better as I'm getting off all the meds they were pumping into me.
He looks damn good for 60... I'm 41, just started working out, and I constantly fear I'm doing it wrong. Fear that I won't see any results, but I hope I look that physically fit at 60!
In the Interest of staying young in the body into 90's plus years, My Tai Chi instructor said The Chinese Masters would gage the age of a Martial Artist body by 3 measures. 1. Elasticity of the skin, maintained mainly with the Qigong practices. 2. Strength/Flexibility of the spine. 3 For how long can you practice continuous martial arts movements in a low to the ground stance as in thighs parallel to the ground stances, a good goal is 30 minutes to an hour. Also I would also add all the grips hand/forearm/finger/toe/foot/calve strength, good for the central nervous System to train the hands feet and spine.

36:10 .. diet IS hard if you’re short on cash.. but.. you CAN grow a decent amount of veggies in a SMALL area.. I transferred from a house with a yard and garden to a dinky townhouse apartment 🙄 I’ve got roughly 10x10 patio space and using containers I’ve grown enough tomatoes to give away probably an easy 40+lbs to neighbors, plus enough beans to eat, give some away and still have some to put up.. while also growing potatoes, sweet potatoes, cukes, leeks, amaranth, and greens.. Because that’s what I like to eat 😂.. but if you’re genuinely motivated, it’s entirely possible to offset your grocery bills and improve the quality and taste of your food, even with limited space.. ..and without buying stupid gimmicky planters or expensive hydro stuff.. 😬 ATB

Similar style, im a creator. I just wanna work out, go the gym, and start doing, and body tells me what it needs and what it dont need. I try to learn as much bodyweight moves as possible, so i have a wide variation of exercises. Sometimes it is basic moves, "heavy" weights, sometimes more cardio, sometimes not at all. Variying between very basic moves and difficult ones, not forgetting weighted stretches and mobility. Jogging sometimes. I might work out hard 20 h/week for three months, then slow down for months. And start over again. Hardest part really is to not do another set or exercise even when you feel like you're superman at the moment. It sucks. It's like coitus interruptus. But it is necessary. Yes. Motivation says whether or not "you're gonna do it."
Discipline is whether or not you actually DO IT. 🙂
