I spend some time with Chris, a 52 year old expat, who after a year, is leaving Cebu and moving to Dumaguete. Is he making the right decision?

good choice. I initially went there in 2007... with long term intentions. Then realized. Oh No. I play golf and the golf is extremely limited there.
I went to the Philippines the first time July 2022 and stayed 7 months traveling from Dumaguete to Siquijor Island to Alona Beach Bohol to IT Park Cebu and Business Park Cebu .Spent a month or two in each place met some of you at Ground Zero Coffee shop. I didn't hesitate at all I love the Philippines and visiting each place for a few months. Be back in December one way ticket making it my second home.
Great interview. I landed in Cebu. Been here for two months. Chris is right on point. I live now in Lapu-Lapu in a rental house I chose Cebu for great medical care and I was right about that. Difference is I am old (79), don't drink, and eat out rarely. Just dumped two (yes 2) filipinas. I spoiled one and the other was just too young. Now I am seeking a Registered Nurse and/or a partner. Before too many jump by butt, I amambulatory and can pay for the nursing part and I will. I would love to meet Chris.

Chris appears to be a high character human being. I only disagree with one point, in IT Park a foreigner can live off of $1,300 US to $1,500 US if you cook alot of food in your condo and eat out only 1 to 2 times per week with your Filipina. As Chris said he eats out all of the time so that is why his budget is a lot higher.

That was my thought, too @@CarefreeChris--$2k-$3k seemed high. But a) lifestyle choices matter and it sounds like you make good decisions wrt spending/saving; and b) maybe a bit of inflation (I have been monitoring Cebu/Duma prices for a couple years) and/or if the exchange rate goes the wrong way.
yup,,,,u can find a studio in IT park as low as $280...Most foreigners do not cook, so they spend a lot of money on food and girls. Some also drink a lot,,,,,I am paying in IT park $363 for newer condo, and if u cook healthy food at home u save a lot of money. But most foreigner here are fat and old, and they do not take care of themselves. YOu need money saved for medical emergencies also
The usual hangout location for quick pick up’s is TGIF in Ayala..it’s hilarious watching these old dudes acting as if they were ballers or Hugh Hefner at TGIF..then what’s even funny is when they walk around the mall looking like grandpa and his grand daughter..
I joined Chris’s channel when he first got here and started vlogging. He looked a lot more like Bruce Willis back then than he does now. Lol
He’s a genuine guy you can tell and he got a cutie because he’s a genuine guy. He scored big I wish you guys the best of luck. Hopefully I’ll be joining you there at some point I have to finish my career in the next two years. Get my pension started and I’ll be over there or in Thailand or both shortly after I retire. Before I sat down roots, I’m going to Malaysia, Indonesia, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Thailand, in the Philippines. I’ll start out Hua Hin Thailand and a little bit of Bangkok I don’t think I can stomach the big city too awful much. Definitely have to check out Cebu. Great video guys two of my favorite channels!

if the USA is so bad then why do we have so many people trying to get into the country? To those that think the grass is greener in some other country I say then go there and live BUT they should not be able to draw their SS or pensions IF they reside in another country, plain and simple.

Great interview with Chris! I met Chris in Cebu a couple of months ago and he's a genuine good guy and a great friend now. I agree that Cebu is a great soft landing for the new expat. And it's easy to travel to a lot of other places from here too by air or ferry.

I've been to both Cebu City and Dumaguete City a number of times. He's right - Ayala Mall and IT Park area is pretty good in Cebu City. Dumaguete is much smaller and quite noisy for a small city. I prefer Cebu City.

I am 51 and married to a Filipina for 10 years. We live in the States but I have spent enough time in the Phils to know what's up. I have been talking to the wife about relocating to Duma or Davao. Her family is close but not that close. We have a budget of around $3000 because we both know what we like and want. I know it can be done for way cheaper but I can live the same way I did in America for way cheaper. I am all in. Before people get all mad, lets agree that we can all live the way we want to as our means will allow. For me, I can live within my budget and still save money every month. Great videos Paul.

I don’t know Old Dog but I’ve been living in Siay for about 9 months now and I believe anywhere you decide to be in the Philippines you will love it because of how nice the people are here.I want to think you all because watching you in the States made me want to be here.I’m now married to a beautiful Pilipino who I’ve known for about 4 years and she takes great care of me .Good luck and always have fun my friend .

Good stuff guys! I am watch both of you all the time. My ticket has been purchased for my first trip; doing Manila, then Cebu, then Dumaguete after that. Two weeks trip to get a feel for the Philippines. A good start. Maybe I can see you there. I have seen so many videos now I feel that I know you both already! Honestly, I can’t wait to escape this American way of life. It is not the same place I grew up in, not by far.
Baby Boomers will be at home in the Philippines because of our values and belief system. I personally am aghast at the rampant looting in high-end shops by gangs in San Francisco! What is happening in SF? Besides, in some cities US$ 3k a month goes to rental only. While in the Philippines, $3k a month in the provinces will afford a luxurious lifestyle. Just take care of your health/medical needs.

Finally, a guy that is honest about how much it cost to live comfortably in Philippines. I lived there so it always irritates me when I hear people say "you can live like a king for a $1000 a month". A monthly income of between $2000-$3000 is a good assessment but probably closer to $3000.
After 10 years in the Philippines I have found I live well on just over 1 thousand a month
This applies to you. If you can’t live on 1000 usd your just a spoiled foreigner.
$3k is gooooood. Anything lower than that is ( living locally and still okay, but better to have to budget $3k if you can afford that lifestyle is gooooood. I'm a Filipina, was married to an American guy from Michigan for 42 years lived in America to different States for 16 years and lived 26 years in Philippines till he passed away before COVID hit 2019, we lived happily in the Philippines but didn't live like the locals, maintained an American/expat lives.

It does not cost anywhere near 3k a month to live anywhere in the Philippines, not even the cities. Otherwise, the entire local population would be homeless. I think you just are unwilling to take in the culture and still have too much of a western mindset.

Good info Paul👍. 😂 important indeed to check for an Adam's apple too just like in Bangkok. The polarization I'm beginning to think is by design in the USA 😢. In addition to most speaking English in the Philippines I have been told by many who have immigrated to the USA that they remember that General MacArthur came back to help liberate the region from one of the toughest of Axis powers. Nice they haven't forgotten like most have in Europe.
He seems like a nice guy. But I'm clicking off now that you got to the "hate culture" in the US.. I spend 2 to 4 months a year in the US. The kind of division he is talking about is online mostly. In real life, and I spend most of the my US time in NYC, people are friendly and doing pretty good. So I'm avoiding this argumentative perspective I see mostly in online conversations. People get caught in their online bubbles and are constantly outraged by opposite online bubbles. It is not what I experience in the real world.
They do exaggerate it or mislead. Half of it comes from the fantasy media, as to make it seem everywhere and affecting everyone. Division is normal (natural) in a place where different distinct peoples are forced together. It never really works. That's the way of the world, has been for ages. It's hard to say more on here with all the censorship about these topics.
Yes there is a great divide in the US that is why I watch BILL OREILLY, he is 73 and has most of the same ideals that we all grew up with. It is no secret who is causing all of the presumed chaos in the US, personally I do not listen to all the noise and rarely watch the news.

I watch Oreilly he is an Independent and because he is my age. But I also watch Newsmax and Megyn Kelley periodically. Notice I do not watch NBC< MSNBC< CNN or CBS, I used to watch FOX NEWS until the 2020 election was stolen. Now days I rarely even discuss politics because it is a waste of time.

Another great video Paul. I’ve been to the Philippines twice and I land in Cebu and stay for two days to acclimate to time jump. Cebu reminds me of Boston USA and I’m a New Hampshire country boy. My lady and I always spend most of our vacation in Bohol and Siquijor which I find far more comfortable. So I’m trying to narrow down places to retire. Hopefully I’ll include checking out Dumaguete but we are focusing on getting her to USA first and see how she likes the culture changes for her here. Love your interview videos to get other people’s perspective and experience. Thank you

It is VERY SAD that I , as an AMERICAN , would think to leave a country that IS or WAS possibly, the best in the world....
I would be in the PHILS right now but for various reasons can t and SADLY may never get there.
Since I watch various VLOGS dealing with the PHILS , I see that several guys have returned to the USA for different reasons but are back in the PHILS or will be returning soon.
I mention this because I think that ,depending on where in the USA you used to live , the change both economical , political and prejudice , violence etc etc , is MORE visible.

America may be the best country to make money, but for men without millions of dollars to burn, it's not the best country for "the good life." I've got a multi-millionaire bud with four mistresses, each of whom he pays $600 - $700 a pop. But for those of us who aren't rich, we need to go overseas to enjoy that kind of "Hugh Hefner" lifestyle.

#1 put ur own boots on the ground and look around. do a few exploratory trips. definitely don’t sell it all and just move.

Agree completely guys. Also, I feel that the Philippines value older people more than they do in the US. The respect the Filipinos have for senior citizens is beyond compare. The culture just dictates it I guess. Even when falling in line, they have a dedicated line for senior citizens. In fact for older Filipinos they get a senior citizens discount for travel, lodging and in restaurants. Even in the airport they have a senior citizen line dedicated for gandma (lola) and grandpa (lolo). Respect !

Nice to see Chris on your channel. I was told that all the tall beautiful women were staying in Dumaguete when I first came to the Philippines but that wasn't true. What kind of woman can you find in Cebu? I was in Cebu when I found my pretty wife in Ozamiz online, took me 40 minutes to fly there and convince her that I was the right man for her😊. Chris is 53 I understand and I was 51 when I arrived in Cebu first time in 2006 but I quickly headed for Bantayan Island. Chris says "Could I live here?", yes and no. It is easy to think you will live in the Philippines when you are in your 50s but when you get closer to 70 you start to think. Anyway, I think we would choose to live on Bantayan Island if it wasn't for our children because the schools in the Philippines aren't great.
People here grew up on various islands speaking various languages and traded with each other for centuries. Magellan arrived with an attitude and that was put in check Pronto. That's why the Philippines is so welcoming if you show respect.

I am 31 and definitely qualify as a minimalist. I spent 2 years in oahu hawaii in a bus conversion. Last 2 years in san diago doing the same. Been watching you for a long time. So far i got 250k saved in investments. Going
Going to be making my first trip down around February. America is a great place to earn your financial freedom but I am helping southeast Asia is where I want to spend it.
My math is 360 k after taxes on a modest 5 percentage interest will give me 1500 a month. If I need more I will go back and work but that my game plan
There are risk-free returns in money market funds and HYSA now around 5%, but those rates will fluctuate. The general market outside the top 7 in sp500 has been bad for the past year and a half. I'm down about 12% over that time. It's difficult to know what to buy now, since the market may keep trending down or sideways.
I am 34 in a similar boat although I prefer living in US and making periodic trips overseas for vacation. Definitely helps to invest early and often.

I was in Mactan Newtown for 25 days 10/3 to 10/27, my son acquired me a condo in the place where his is 570$ so that was nice , tho have to come out again sons moving to Bacolod in Dec and I wanted to check out Dumaguete next time . I was a truck driver T.T. and it was an experience to watch people pass on their motorbike into oncoming traffic , either side really ! Yea that would take a bit more patience for me , but very doable , and as you say Paul just take your time . Have a nice day and thanks for the informative video .
Thanks for the interview, Paul. You guys are right, it's hard right now living in America. Am 62 and retired. I only receive social security, so $2000 would be the max I could afford. I'll hang in here a little longer and make a decision by the end of next year. A lot will depend on how all these wars work out. A friend of mine just retired from the police department L.A.P.D. and gets $7000 a month, sounds great but he's worried about his pension plan being cut or going broke so a lot of his life is on hold. The problem is that too many foreigners are moving into the bigger Phil cities, driving up prices of everything. $2000 bucks is not going to get you very far in a place like Cebu City anymore. On top of that, the dating scene has changed dramatically with so many Americans in competition for the same girls. Ladyboys are very common there now, if you are interested in that.

I'm from Cebu and a subscriber of Chris. Dumaguete is a smaller area closer to nature and beaches and a peaceful safe place. I wouldn't wonder why foreigners or expats would love to live there. 😉 Btw, I enjoyed your conversation. Very good advice to check the bones in meeting girls. 😄😂♥️🇵🇭

I don’t know about Cebu but I did like Dumaguete. I intend to return to the Philippines this winter and will spend a month in Dumaguete plus a few weeks in Manila. I enjoyed the people in Dumaguete as I walked with my lady friend meeting people

Great interview. I’m really on the fence about retirement in another country outside the US. I agree with allot of what I heard about how the US is changing and not for the better. But even if that wasn’t the case it’s more about the financial situation. I could afford to stay in the US but I would really have to live minimally. But minimally here in the US is much lower standard than minimal in the Philippines. I live in California and the cost of living is crazy high. I’ve owned homes in California and had my own business. I’ve always made good money. Now in my 60’s I look forward and I don’t see that bright retirement that I envisioned when I was younger. I’ve traveled the world but never the Philippines. These videos are enlightening and give me hope that it is possible to turn the clock back and start fresh in a place that has promise of a less stressful and happier life than what I’m experiencing now. So again thanks Paul and Chris.
I want to go to the PI for sure ...but I hate the thought of leaving my quads , Classic truck, Motorcycles. Firearms , Friends ..... but the adventure of the Philippines is calling
I wish I didn't mind humid weather. I tried out orlando, moving from idaho, and couldn't take it. I can imagine Philippines even more intense than FL.

Chris touched on a couple of reasons Americans like us are leaving the states as we see such division driving people apart away from our core values. Once we get a taste of the Philippines some of us see we can live there and thrive like we did in the states with less encumbrances. Less stress and more just enjoying life on a day to day basis with no rush. I do believe making friends More with Filipinos of all sorts immerses you more into understanding the culture and attitudes verses staying in a cocoon surrounded by expats. But some need that where some of us are more independent and strive to be on our own but still have a select few good ones around us. Like I met Derek of Q adventures as he has been a great person on many levels; so to me it is in being selective.

There are less and less foreigners going to the Philippines!
And the ones who do come have many many issues in there life!
Then they meet a younger girl 25 -30 yrs younger and want to return too good ole USA and try to take there gf or wife back!

@@donaldrump4037 the PI is a beautiful country and a nice place to visit for a month or less, but i could never live there permanently because of the chaos, noise, crime, con artists, etc.
@@donaldrump4037 IMO you are not describing problems with the Philippines, rather expats that don't have their lives in order. Granted the Phils aren't for everybody (I would perhaps even argue it's not for most) however that doesn't mean there aren't expats who can thrive there.
Thanks Paul & Chris, This was a great reaffirmation of my current travel itinerary. I started off in Bangkok last week for complete Health Assessment and am now in Chiang Mai - then headed to Koh Samui for two weeks. Then it is off to Cebu and then Dumaguette in search of the promise land. Your guidance is greatly appreciated. BR, TimE

Cebu City and Dumaguete are like chalk and cheese. Cebu has all the conveniences of a modern city. it's very busy crowded and expensive in comparison to a regional city or province town. Personally I prefer being just outside the city limits Say Liloan to the North or Talisay to the south. Gives you the tranquillity of the provinces but close enough to major medical hospitals should it be needed. This is where Michelle and I differ due to her growing up in Lapu Lapu City she likes everything being close at hand which is not readily available in the province.
Chris's take on the States is not much different to my own in relation to Australia.The economic pressures racial and political divisions just make my home land unattractive to me and the life I wish to lead.

I agree that IT park could be good for a lot of guys. Cebu IT park is really an island so to speak. It is like being in another city in the west that has everything a foreigner should need. Once you leave IT park area, it is like any other city in the Philippines, and you will get more acclimated to Phil life.

IT Park is getting very expensive with so many westerners flooding in. Paying 150 pesos ($3) for a simple cup of coffee was unthinkable just 3 years ago. Rents at IT Park have gone up by 30% since last year and there's no end in sight.

My plan is to live in the Duma area and do weekends in Cebu City/Davao. Date and have fun until I find something serious. The "don't poop where you sleep" plan.
