    Excellent updates all around. I appreciate the new yellow colour. Like you said, it pops but doesn't look out of place in the wild.
    Please consider offering more webbing strap options for people to mix and match. Reflective Silver, Reflective Orange, Shimoda Teal, and the new Yellow straps would all look great with the Black and Army backpacks.

      Hi thank you. We do not have plans for reflective versions but will have our other colors out in a bit. I will look in to the reflective webbing though. I stay away from the reflective items on our bags as they can spoil a moment when keeping a low profile, but having them removable on Explore, would work. Thanks for posting.

    Great job Ian. I have the x30 and x50. I take 30 day trips all over the world and have these bags on all day, covering 7 - 10 miles a day. My typical set up is a 5d MkIV, 16-35/24-70 and 70-200 (all 2.8), flash, tripod, ND filter setup and the regular odds and ends. Total carry weight is about 33lbs. These are, without a doubt, the best most comfortable bags I have ever carried. I particularly like the versatility the roll top gives you, stuff it full of clothes, power cords and filters or empty it out and roll it down. I have used a lot of different bags and nothing, I mean nothing, compares to these bags. And the improvements make a great bag even better.

    I purchased an X50 V2. I use it to carry a Canon 600mm F4 along with various other gear. I would be great to have a cube that supports a 600mm F4 in the X50. The bag is big enough to pull the 600mm from the top and access other gear from the zippered pocket. I know the X70 can support the larger lenses, but its too big a bag.

    Just to give everyone a note: although Action v2 has a lot of great features that everybody loves, the v1 is now discounted off $100 on B&H of the x50 starter kit, making the v1 ($299) and v2 ($429) difference $130. This should be taken into account when choosing between the two. For me, this price difference would take me to v1 since there is no big difference between the two and the upgrade is not worth the $130 difference IMO. And TBH, from my experience with x50 v1, I probably won't benefit from the new features that much. So if you ever see v1 discounted, think about it. v1 is very likely to be discontinued soon. However, if the price is not a concern or you really like the new color/volume/features, just go ahead and grab v2 (I would love the 40L and yellow combination XD ). The best adventure camera backpack just becomes better and it will stay with you for many many years. You won't regret your selection.

    I think I will have to buy one of these packs I am looking at the X40 pack as it seems to do everything I need from a pack and it does it really well. I currently have a few different bags, one of which is a Fstop pack which I don't like that much as storage space is limited and can be a pain to move as there's a lack of grab handles on the bag. It certainly feels like my fstop bag was designed for photographers but who aren't photographers themselves so there's little things that are missed which really makes a big difference when it comes to usability, but this Shimoda bag I feel is much better designed and care has been put into it. I could be looking to buy this bag at the end of the year and off loading my fstop one.

    Marshall san, while I am happy and excited that you have the Action X v2, I'm also annoyed. Firstly, I just bought the x30 over a month ago. Then I just bought add-ons like the rain cover about 2 weeks ago. Fortunately/unfortunately, i don't think the v2 is a major upgrade. A v1.2 rather than v2. You make great stuff though, I like them.

  • @johannesa.7630
    @johannesa.7630 Год назад

    I really love your bags (and just bought my fourth with the new X40). However, there is one thing I cannot understand, and this is the sizing / naming. While the names of the smaller ones approximately meet the volume (i.e. Action X25 v2 = 25 l), the bigger ones are far off. Using the figures from your website, the Action X50 v2 is 30 x 56 x 20, which equals about 34 l. The Action X70 HD with 31 x 59 x 23 equals about 42 l. One might argue to add the additional 7l of the rolltop, but even so there is a siginificant difference.
    As a passionate hiker, I am used to orient myself on the names of backpacks to decide which one to use for which travel, which is hardly possible here.
    In addition, I really miss a bigger / higher backpack, which can be used as backpack for multi-week travels, combined with the great and easy access to a core unit. An Action X70 with an 10 to 20 cm extended rolltop and some stabilizing straps would basically do the trick I think.

    • @ShimodaDesigns
      @ShimodaDesigns  Год назад

      Hi our backpack volume is not measured by dimensions as the bags as they are soft shapes and not hard edge cube shapes - It would not be accurate especially with the shapes of modern packs. We fill the bags and then measure the fill. Also the name scheme is an approximate measurement and rounded off. To really on exact volume for a camera bag, IMO doesn't' serve much purpose beyond a starting point for finding a size. As for the X70... I'm not sure what you mean... but the bag is already like that no? It your saying you want 20cm more/additional roll top... it would create a lot for excess material in the 'roll', add weight and significant bulk to the upper bag for something that is ins't used too much. Personally I can't see a need for a bag much taller that is is still travel friendly - it's a very niche use compared to want most are using it for. - Ian

    Can I suggest something? I snagged an Action X30 v2 because of this video. I am curious if you have any reviews from skiers?
    I was deciding between the X25 and X30. I worry that the x30 would be a little wide for me to move freely on skis but I went with it anyway because I figured I could compress the load.

    • @ShimodaDesigns
      @ShimodaDesigns  21 день назад

      It depends what you mean by skiers. Many backcountry skiers continue to use our packs. So if you mean backcountry skiers then I'd say the results are positive. With that said, a bigger bag will fit more gear and if using a Core Unit, personally I would be using an X40 and up. But it depends on the gear you consider essentials for bc travel, your own ability on skis, and how much fun you want to have with your camera gear on. But if you mean inbounds with no need for avalanche gear... IMO the bags ski great. While I snowboard - all of our mountain bags need to be capable to ride aggressively in the backcountry. It's where they all get tested and the foundation of the how the packs carry, wear and their comfort. I think the lack of reviews from skiers comes from a lack of ski photogs who actually make YT content.

      I think I made the right choice with the x30. I typically carry fast and light gear one most excursions.

The new V2 version, the removable pouches are held together to the side pockets by two webbings - as i usually carry a gitzo systematic 4 in the original action X, will the durability of the removable tripod pouches be compromised as it is not stitched to the side pockets and only held by thin webbings?

      I have the X50 and flew with it between USA and Europe (United/Lufthansa, multiple flights) and also within Europe with low-cost airlines (Ryanair). No issues at all with the X50 size as a carry-on.
      Of course i had it packed minimal:
      - side pouches tucked and zipped away
      - nothing in the roll-top compartment and roll-top down all the way
      - nothing in the front pockets besides some paperwork (itinerary and stuff)
      - medium dslr + small dslr core units full of gear 😊
      - no tripods or anything attached on the outside of the backpack
      So , i kept it as “slim” as possible every time and didn’t have any complaints. Sometimes the gate agents asked me to show it to them on purpose and tag it as a carry-on without a glitch 😊
      On the last trip i had an X50 as a carry-on + an additional small “personal item” case with some stuff, no issues .
      Sometimes X50 seems to be overkill for me and i need a smaller bag, so maybe the X40 is more appropriate (depends on how much gear you want to carry frequently)

      @@brentguiliano I think the main compartment of the explore v2 35L and Action x50 is pretty much the same, Action X50 being a little taller in the extra space above main compartment + the additional rolltop.
      I have basically the same cube setup as the large dslr but splitted in 2 smaller ones : medium dslr v2 + small dslr on top of it . these 2 cubes stacked equal full size of main compartment (DSLR large cube) but with some versatility.
      In my Action X50 i can fit the following:
      * medium dslr cube
      - Nikon Z7 + 24-120 Z F4 attached (or 24-70 2.8 Z )
      - Nikon 14-30 Z F4
      - accesories: filters (kase magnetic filter pouch), batteries, remote trigger, cleaning stuff (microfiber, rocket blower etc), headlamp etc
      - pelican cases for memory cards
      - or … fewer accesories and carry additional 1-2 primes instead
      *small dslr cube on top of the medium one
      - Nikon Z 100-400 F4.5-5.6 (or 70-200 2.8)
      Extra:
      - above the main compartment: clothes or other pouch with stuff (maybe a drone)
      - rolltop: rarely used if at all
      I think the 200-600 in your kit it’s the special guest 😊 you have to accomodate.
      Everything else will fit the X50 but i am not sure about the X40 though.
      I don,t really imagine how you can accomodate 200-600 AND everything else you mentioned in an airtravel compatible way. 🙂
      Moving from the Mindshift 36L to the X40 you will gain minimal space i think and also some additional liters in the rolltop.
      If you want to carry everything at once , including that 200-600 i think you might want to start looking at X70 😐 That 200-600 is the problem 🤔
      … or just decide if on a particular trip you will shoot only wildlife or everything else 😁 (i know it’s hard )

    The Action X V1 produces rubbing noises of the outer fabric at every step while walking.
    This can be incredibly annoying when you want to move silently at night or while stalking wildlife.
    If you use "silent" fabrics on the Action X V2 or future versions, I might strongly consider selling the V1 and upgrading to a later version.

      Hi, in general we try to improve on fabrics when possible. So while Action X v1 is the same as v2 and Explore - the shell has seen improvements during it's lifetime. If the fabric is rubbing against another surface it might make a rubbing noise because it is a resin coating and resin can do that on some users and how the bag sits on them. With that said, if there is rubbing and an audible sound coming from the belt area, and Explore is silent while Action X is not - it is likely because Explore has a different material on the belt and straps. The mesh does not have the resin.

      Thanks for your quick response. Do I understand this correctly: All 3 have the same fabric material but the Action X V1 has a resin coating on top (it actually feels more "rubbery" indeed). Does the Action X V2 have the same resin coating or not? I am using the Plus Shoulder Straps on my V1 and the rubbing noise comes mostly from the strain of the fully loaded backpack weight on the fabric at the attachment and contact points of the shoulder straps with the main backpack body, but also when I just lift and carry it on the top carrying handle by hand. There is no rubbing noise from the contact points / areas with my body. In general the Action V1 also produces noise when simply stroking my hand above its surface while the Explore V2 does not...
      So the same noise due to resin coating of the fabric can be expected from the Action X V2 as well?

      The load lifters? When you pull them tight, they pull up the bag and draw it closer to your body. The also take most of the weight of the bag, so its not all on your shoulders.

    Was the air pump sleeve sacrificed in favor of the extra padded laptop sleeve, or is it still in some versions of the bag. I just picked up an x50 v2 and was highly disappointed to see that a useful feature appears to have been sacrificed for one that is much less useful. I never used the bike pump sleeve for a bike pump, but it was highly useful for certain camping tools, like a stake hammer or tent poles. Stuff you didn't want to lose in the bag or damage other equipment.

    • @ShimodaDesigns
      @ShimodaDesigns  Год назад

      We had a lot of customers request a bigger laptop sleeve and almost no one mentions using the bike pump sleeve. The items you list generally come in similar sleeves as to what we removed. Aside from that, one wasn't removed in favor of another, but the pump sleeve saw little use so I removed it. - Ian

    So i know i want the the action x40 v2, but just have two questions, what is the biggest size water bladder that can fit in the pocket? And is that pocket water proof so all my gear won’t get wet in case the bladder leaks or pops for whatever reason?

    • @ShimodaDesigns
      @ShimodaDesigns  9 месяцев назад

      You can fit a 3L but IMO I would not carry that much water. It will severely skew the balance of the pack. If you need that much - spread it around. Bladder sleeves are not waterproof... I would hope your bladder is though ;)

      Bladder and refill a smaller bottle or 2 is the way to go if you need that much. Distribute the weight and use the shoulder strap pocket for one of those bottles. That weight will be off set by the main packs weight.@@christianavalos7096

    I’m really taking a liking to the new women’s color way. However, I am unsure of how different the chest/sternum straps and belt might fit on my (male) body. Would you think it would make a big difference using the women’s bags? Does anyone have experience with this dilemma with other bags? Thanks in advance for the help and please excuse my ignorance.

    • @ShimodaDesigns
      @ShimodaDesigns  Год назад +1

      The women's straps are fine for men, I personally used a women's pack for most of the winter of 2022, so I could confidently reply this question :) The main design difference is how they curve around the breast area, which is irrelevant for most men. While the fit is not the exact same, it offers a very similar support and weight distribution. There are currently other men buying the women's pack but its still too new to have any feedback from 'non-biased' users.

    Am I blind but it looks like none of the straps have Peak Capture Clip compatibility, which is probably something I see on 80% of serious outdoor landscape/adventure/travel photographers. Looks like you'll have to clip over the entire strap, leaving the hard metal pressing against your skin.

      Actually I was watching your videos with the core unit - small.
      A little on the fence if I want the new 25L or the regular 30L, I'm a 5"7 chubby dad (210lb) where I'm looking a better edc/travel backpack where it's decent for work and good for travel.
      I usually just bring my a74 with just the 24-105, a tech pouch, steam deck, then my 3 year old toddlers utensils, clothes and cleaning stuff.
      I like how your roll top can be opened from bottom or the top, I do own a wandrd prvke lite and the 31L so hoping that I can replace both these bags with the action x v2
